Windows storage server 2012 share not connecting by share name but connecting thru IP address from windows XP machines

We have a windows storage server 2012 (HP storage server) in our domain. All of sudden We had a issue, connecting the server shares using the share name only from XP machines, but it is connecting through IP address with a delayed response. We are getting
the below error message from all the windows XP SP2 machines in our domain.
"\\<share name> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have a access permissions.
Login Failure: The target account name is incorrect."
But it is connecting while we are trying from windows 7 machines.  Also the other server shares (Windows 2003 server) are connecting without any issues using the share name. In addition to this we gave everyone permission for this share. And it worked
well before but not now. Could you please suggest any solution for this complex issue?
Thanks,
UdayaKumar S

  • IOMeter hangs when running to a NFS share from Windows Storage Server 2012

    Hello,
I am trying to measure performance of NFS share coming from Windows Storage Server 2012 using IOMeter also running on windows Server 2012. I can create the share on WSS2012. Windows 2012 client does see the share. IOmeter does see the share, and I can start
running. But fairly quick IOMeter gets an error, and stops. After that NFS share on the client is not visible to IOMeter anymore. This happen every time.
I have used IOMeter to SMB shares a lot with no problem..

    1) Can you use NFS share with NFS clients normally? I mean is it I/O Meter who has issues with streaming or do other apps have similar problems? Say normal copy to / from NFS share?
    2) What error exactly is popped up? Do you happen to have a screenshot?

  • Windows Storage server 2012 Standard Licenseing

We have purchased 2 licenses of Windows Storage Server 2012 standard Edition for production. These 2 servers will be configured in cluster in production. Now we have to install one more server in failover in case the production servers goes down. My question
is do we need to purchase the license for the 3rd server as the same will be working as an DR for the production.

    Hello,
yes, you need to purchase th ellicense for the third Server while Windows Server storage is licensed per instance(active or passive).
on th emicrosoft MSLT for Windows Server storage 2012 R2 Standard we hav the following info:
License Model: The software is licensed based on:
the number of instances of server software that you run; and
the number of processors in the physical hardware
Assignment of the License to the Server:
The software license is permanently assigned to the server with which you acquired the software. That server is the
licensed server for that particular license. A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate server. You may not assign the same license to more than one server.

  • Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Evaluation?

Can Microsoft please provide evaluation of Storage Server 2012 R2. Currently cannot find any links or info RE this but can 2012 non R2. Obviously partners and potential customers need to test the software before purchasing an appliance running it.

    That's the official link:

If you're MSFT partner you need to talk to your MSFT responsible staff about licensing, evaluation etc.
    That's for non R2.
Sorry can't quote inline, this is by far the worst ever text box I've ever used online. It adds and uses formatting but has no formatting options. Whoever thought that is OK should be fired.
I don't know what imaginary world people other than us live in but yes we are an MS partner, we deal with a distributor for licensing and MS products. Maybe things are different in USA or whatever but here in Aus the buck stops at us. Some imaginary "MSFT
responsible staff" doesn't exist. There is no such thing for us, we are the support, licensing experts, product experts etc etc. I wish so badly people would stop assuming on here.

Its a collection of information that is permanently stored and unalterable. Archives are necessary for all businesses (to varying degrees) to comply with regulations and in the case of litigation. The terms backup and archive are often confused. A backup is intended to restore the system to a state in time when there is data corruption or loss. As such, backups are overwritten with more recent information as time progresses. Archives, on the other hand, preserve data for longer periods of time and are easily searchable. Why do you need archiving?Moving email to archives helps limit the amount of data storage needed for mailboxes. • Storage Server 2012 R2 and backups

We have a network with a domain server and a few virtual servers. I was looking for a setup that would backup the servers and all of our workstations. I was looking for a backup that would make an image backup but that we would still be able to get at
the files. Will Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 work for that? If so how hard would it be to implement without disrupting the current setup? I was looking at the Thecus W4000 or the Thecus W5000 because they come with the server software in a form factor
that I think would be ideal. Also, does the Microsoft Azure backup service work as a good offsite backup in this kind of setup.

    Hi,
Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 can be used to centralize client backup. Azure Backup is a simple and reliable data protection solution that enables customers to back up their on-premises data to the cloud. We can use Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials
to make Azure Backup easy to turn on “offsite backups” to help protect against catastrophes such as a fire, water damage, or theft of the NAS.

  • Windows Server 2012 Essentials (not R2) - all client computers offline

The server is Windows Server 2012 Essentials (not R2). I have had this problem ever since I first installed the Windows Server 2012 Essentials server in the summer of 2013 (before R2 was released). The Windows Server 2012 Essentials server shows offline
for all Devices under Dashboard. (Allow me to add that I just installed another site with Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2, and it was a breeze - all of the computers at the second install site are online.) I have one Windows 8.1 Pro client and the rest
are Windows 7 Pro clients. The problem occurs on ALL client computers.
I have removed computers from Devices in Dashboard on the server, rebooted the server, changed the client computer to a workgroup, rebooted the client computer, and reinstalled the connector software on the client computer. Same result. I
have tried this on a Windows 7 Pro client and a Windows 8.1 Pro client with the same results.
After running the connector on a client computer and waiting for the server to update its Devices status, if I look under Devices on the server Dashboard, the Windows 8.1 client computer will say online but within 24 hours it goes offline again. The
Windows 7 client computers never show online. Both computers stay offline - they NEVER show an online status (referring to the status under Devices in Dashboard).
I should make it clear that the clients can access the server shares with no problem. File synchronization works great. The clients can ping the server and the server can ping the clients. But client backups on the server fail.
One of the most troublesome things about this problem is that it prevents the client computers from being accessed remotely using the website setup by Anywhere Access. I can login to get remote access to the shared files on the server, but
the only computer that says "online" is the server. All of the other computers are "offline".
The server and clients are only using Windows firewall. The clients all use Microsoft Security Essentials for their anti-virus.
I used a troubleshooting tool that tells me that there are problems with port 6602 on the server, but the clients are all fine with port 6602. I know port 6602 is important for using Anywhere Access but I am still trying to find out more details on that.
I have checked all of the firewall settings related to port 6602 on the server, and the firewall settings look like the standard Windows settings for this port. I used netstat to find the PID associated with the port, and I looked up the PID to find the service.
    That all looked standard, too.
I have been working on this problem since the summer of 2013!! Does anyone have ANY suggestions?!!
    HELP!

    Hi,
Just addition, please check if all necessary Windows updates are installed on those
    “Offline” client computer.
When connect client computers to the Windows Server 2012 Essentials server by using the Connector software, there
will be LAUNCHPAD on the client computer. Was this LAUNCHPAD grayed out? Please check if can access Shared Folders via this LAUNCHPAD. Meanwhile, please ping the Windows Server 2012 Essentials via IP address and server name when client computers show as
    Offline. Any find?
Get Connected in Windows Server Essentials
In addition, please follow the path on Server and client computer:
%programdata%\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs. Did you check any relevant Server-side logs and
Client-side Logs if find more clues?
    Windows
Server Essentials 2012/2012 R2 Log Files
If any update, please feel free to let us know.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials connecting with Launchpad on Mac OS 10.9.2

Note: Note to moderators, I accidentally submitted this to Windows Small Business Server Forums. If someone could move this thread to the appropriate directory would be much appreciated.
Hello we have a client which has a Mac OSX 10.9.2 and we are trying to connect the Mac Launchpad to the Mac. We have a VPN set up and it is working correctly so we connect to the server by using servername:65510/connect/ this brings us up with the correct
screen and prompts us to download software for mac, when opening we can get to the mac connector and we go through all the setup however when we reach "User Credentials" and we enter the correct password it comes up saying "Cannot connect to
the server using the name that was entered. Check if the specified value is correct and try again." We have set up macs before using this software the only difference is this is the first Mac which has been on OSX 10.9 Mavericks.
We have spent countless hours diagnosing and looking into all the possible reasons this could be and the only conclusion is that it must either be a software glitch on the Mac or on the server itself. I was doing some research and found a thread by a user
    named
ZconR on Monday, January 14, 2013 6:08 PM
"This is apparently a problem with Update Rollup 4 for the server.  If you remove this update it will allow you to move forward
with the installation of the MAC connector software using Admin credentials.  Hope this helps.  (It seems you can apply the update after the software installs and everything should continue to work.)"
This would fit in perfectly with our problem and I could not find any sources to confirm this information. Can anyone confirm if this is issue is correct and if uninstalling Rollup 4 will make this work?

    Hi James,
Based on your description, I can find a known issue for this
Update Rollup 4. Please check if fit the current situation of your problem. Descript as below:
You cannot install this update by using a Mac client connector that has Update Rollup 4 for Windows Storage
Server 2008 R2 Essentials installed. This issue occurs because of a change requirement for Mac external binaries. To work around this issue, reinstall the Mac client connector before you install Update Rollup 4.
Note: This issue only occurs on a server that has Update Rollup 3 for Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials
    installed.
    By the way, did
you install the Mac client connector by using administrator account?
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows Storage Server Essentials 2012 R2 + SBS 2008 Domain

I recently purchased one of the new Thecus N2000 Windows Storage Server Essentials 2012 R2 boxes and I'd like to integrate it into my SBS 2008 domain.  I've successfully joined it to the domain, but whenever I try to run the "Configure Windows
Server Essentials" wizard I get an error "Configuration encountered some issues" "Please Click Retry.  If the issue still exists please refer to the help link for more troubleshooting steps".  Unfortunately the troubleshooting
link just takes me to these forums, and I have yet to find anything in here to get this to work.
I've tried removing the Essentials role, rebooting, re-adding the Essentials role, and re-running the "Configure Windows Server Essentials" wizard, but no good - I still continue to get the same failure.
I've read that Windows Server Essentials requires that it holds the FSMO roles and it gets angry if it doesn't hold them.  SBS 2008 also requires that *it* holds the FSMO roles though, which is what prevented me from going to Windows Server Essentials.
Windows _Storage_ Server Essentials however was billed as a different product, I'm getting conflicting information from some people saying I should be able to integrate it with my SBS 2008 domain no problem, but given the fact that I'm having so much
trouble with this I'm beginning to question that.
Has anyone out there been able to add a WSSe 2012 R2 box to an SBS domain and get the two to play together nicely?  What did it take?

    Hi Mesan,
    à
I've tried removing the Essentials role, rebooting, re-adding the Essentials role
Did you mean that Windows Server Essentials Experience role had been installed on that server? I only find that
deploy Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard/Datacenter with Windows Server Essentials Experience role
in an existing AD Environment. For more details, please refer to following article and check if can help you.

  • Auditing failed access to files and folders in Windows Storage Server 2008 R2

    Hello,
I've been trying to figure out why I cannot audit the failed access to files and folders on my server.  I'm trying to replace a unix-based NAS with a Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 solution so I can use my current audit tools (the 'nix NAS
has basically none).  I'm looking for a solution for a small remote office with 5-10 users and am looking at Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 (no props yet, but on a Buffalo appliance).  I specifically need to audit the failure of a user to access
folders and files they are not supposed to view, but on this appliance it never shows.  I have:
Enabled audit Object access for File system, File share and Detailed file share
Set the security of the top-level share to everyone full control
Used NTFS file permissions to set who can/cannot see particular folders
On those folders (and letting those permissions flow down) I've set the auditing tab to "Fail - Everyone - Full Control - This folder, subfolders and files"
On the audit log I only see "Audit Success" messages for items like "A network share object was checked to see whether client can be granted desired access (Event 5145) - but never a failure audit (because this user was not allowed access by NTFS permissions).
I've done this successfully with Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 w/SP1 and am wondering if anybody has tried this with the Windows Storage Server version (with success of course).  My customer wants an inexpensive "appliance" and I thought this new
variant of 2008 was the ticket, but I can't if it won't provide this audit.
Any thoughts? Any of you have luck with this?  I am (due to the fact I bought this appliance out of my own pocket) using the WSS "Workgroup" flavor and am wondering if this feature has been stripped from the workgroup edition of WSS.
    TIA,
    --Jeffrey

    Hi Jeffrey,
The steps to setup Audit on a WSS system should be the same as a standard version of Windows Server. So please redo the steps listed below to see if issue still exists:
Enabling file auditing is a 2-step process.
[1] Configure "audit object access" in AD Group Policy or on the server's local GPO. This setting is located under Computer Configuration-->Windows Settings-->Security Settings-->Local Policies-->Audit Policies. Enable success/failure auditing
    for "Audit object access."
[2] Configure an audit entry on the specific folder(s) that you wish to audit. Right-click on the folder-->Properties-->Advanced. From the Auditing tab, click Add, then enter the users/groups whom you wish to audit and what actions you wish to audit
    - auditing Full Control will create an audit entry every time anyone opens/changes/closes/deletes a file, or you can just audit for Delete operations.

  • Windows Storage Server 2008 - unzip with drag & drop from Windows 7 client fails

    Hello.
As i asked this question in German and got no answer so i try it in English now.
    I have the following problem:
We have a Windows SBS 2008, where we store our files. If somebody opens a ZIP-file on a network share from a Windows 7 Client (64 Bit) it is possible to drag & drop the content (multiple files) to a directory. So far everything works as expected.
We now have an additional Windows Storage Server 2008 integrated in our domain (Buffalo Tera Station WS-QV8/R5), where we also store files. If somebody opens the same ZIP-file on a network share of this server from a Windows 7 Client and tries to drag &
drop the content the following happens:
    1. only one file is extracted and to display the file a refresh of the explorer view is needed.
    2. when the drag & drop action is repeated a second file is extracted
Not alle files are extracted and there is no error message or indication why this happens.
The behaviour is reproducible from another Windows 7 Client (32 Bit).
If we try to drag & drop the files from the ZIP-file on the Windows Storage Server network sahre to a directory on the SBS network share all files are extracted correctly.
On the Windows Storage Server itself all files are extracted without problmems. Therefore it must be a problem with the combination of Windows Storage Server und Windows 7 Client accessing the files via network shares.
Are there any ideas where this problem could be located? Has anybody the same phenomenon and maybe a solution for it?
    Thanks in advance
    Michael Pruss

  • Cannot run the big size exe file ( 900MB) on Windows Storage Server 2003 x86 SP2 OS(Hyper-V VM machine)

When I run a big size exe file(>900 MB) on Windows Storage Server  2003 x86 SP2 OS VM mchine(which is managered by Hyper-V server), I got the following error message:
Windows cannot open this program because the license enforcement system has been tampered with or become corrupted.
This setup.exe should be a trusted source because of it run other OS(windows 2003, windows 2008, 2008 R2 etc.).  we use the same way to create the exe whose size < 700MB, it works fine on the same machine(Windows Storage
Server 2003 x86 SP2 OS VM machine).  So I assume that the file size(>900MB) causes the problem, It seems that OS dont' support it.
    My questions:
    1. Is there the limitation of exe size to run on Windows
Storage Server  2003 x86 SP2 OS VM machine?  If yes, what is the size of limitation?
    2. What reason is this error? Is it related with Hyper-V?
    Thanks,
    Recky

Did you install the 2003 VM from scratch or did you create it via a P2V process?  In addition to what Shaon says about not all applications running properly in VMs, performing P2V to create VMs can also cause issues with a variety of things.
First thing to check would be Shaon's suggestion to try it in another VM.  If it works in another VM, and you P2V'ed this VM, try creating your Storage Server VM from scratch and try again.  Better yet, if the application can be run on a later version
of the OS, create a 2012 Storage Server instead of the 2003 Storage Server as your VM and give it a try.

  • DFS on Windows Storage Server 2008R2 Essentials

I have a small NAS-type device running Windows Storage Server 2008R2 in place at a remote site for a client.  This was put in place to replace a failing 2003 domain controller (not my choice for replacement, client did it for cost reasons) that is still
in place as of this writing.  This is my first time working on a WSS machine (and hopefully my last).  DFS replication between the two sites is crucial.  Main site has a 2008R2 Standard DC.
I enabled, via PS commands, DFS on the WSS remote site machine.  I have DFS replication working from the main site
to the WSS box, but it
won't replicate from the WSS box to the main site DC or the still existing 2003 remote site machine.  Any dfsrdiag commands I try to run on the WSS box fail, such as:
    C:\>dfsrdiag backlog /rgname:tcdata /rfname:tcdata /sendingmember:ip-dc2
[ERROR] Cannot find DfsrReplicatedFolderConfig object. Possible reasons:
+ The replicated folder is not configured on the member
+ Access is denied to its configuration information
[ERROR] Replicated folder <tcdata> not found. Err: -2147217406 (0x80041002)
    Operation Failed
I suspect these commands are failing because the WSS box isn't (can't be) a domain controller, but I've no basis for this reasoning.  Is this the case?  I've torn down and recreated the memberships and connections on the WSS box a couple
times to no avail.  Running a "Verify Topology" on the WSS box results in "The topology for replication group TCDATA is fully connected.  Data can replicate throughout the topology."  A propagation report with the WSS box
as the source results in "Arriving Pending".
I'm actually unsure how to troubleshoot this.  Can anyone offer advice other than "don't use WSS"?

    Hi,
It appeared that the configure file was invalid or corrupted. Please try to recreate the replication group to see if it can resolve the issue.
There is a similar thread, please go through it to help troubleshoot this issue:

  • How to install KB2950358 on Windows STORAGE Server 2008 R2?

    Hello
I am experiencing the exact issue described
here on my WD Sentinel DX4000 nas box which runs Windows Storage Server 2008 R2. This is causing regular crashes and reboots and general unreliability when the memory leak causes all ram to be used up and the CPU is constantly running at 100% which both
increases electricity usage and shortens the lifespan of the system.
I have downloaded the hotfix on that KB article but it refuses to install claiming that it is not compatible. When the underlying Windows Server 2008 R2 OS is the same how can it not be compatible? My theory is that the Storage server version is only used
and available on a small handful of OEM devices and there's barely any information of it on the internet so I think Microsoft have forgotten to add it to the compatibility list for this particular hotfix.
After weeks of searching, I cannot find a way to force install the update. It's not a business-critical system and I've got backups of it so I am happy to try manual or risky efforts to get it installed. I have tried extracting the MSU file but that doesn't
give me any useful files to install it manually or skip the compatibility checks.
I've also tried to contact Microsoft directly but they don't even have Storage Server listed as an option on their support contact page so I've given up there, as a last resort I am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. Other online forums
refuse to help saying it's too risky with a server but personally I want it installed and will try anything to do so because I've got a £1000 NAS sitting here that is unusable due to this issue. I'd rather not reinstall the OS as the problem reoccurs - I've
tried it already before I found this KB article.
Bottom line, Microsoft have identified the issue and released a hotfix, the server version IS supported, but was not added to the compatibility restrictions of the update so I cannot get the update installed.
Any advice gladly received. Hopefully someone from MS will see this and be able to update the compatibility of the hotfix if nothing else is possible.

I see SP1 is a prerequisite. Also the manufacturer may have specific patch procedures or recommendations so I'd probably contact them directly.
