  • My iMac screen freezes and a grey colour slowly creeps down my screen

Hi, my iMac screen freezes and a grey colour slowly creeps down the screen and has a large black square in the centre saying "You must restart your computer by pressing the power button and then pressing it again to restart" or words to that effect in English and about 4 or 5 other languages.  I find this happens more frequently when I try to stream movies or tv shows.  It also happened when I was trying to download a couple of tv shows from iTunes.
It also sometimes makes a wierd sound a kind of loud noise like a record stuck in a groove.  This has happend many times since upgrading to Lion.  I hear a lot of people on here talking about their screens going completely black and not responding.  I believe that mine has only gone black a couple of times and I couldn't wake it up from "sleep mode" with the mouse or keyboard.  I don't know if this is also happening to other people, but my bluetooth keyboard keeps disconnecting all the time since the upgrade as well, it's driving me nuts!!  Plus my wifi will show that it is fully operational, however, I can't use the internet when I wake my computer from sleep mode.  I have to click on wifi and turn wifi off then on again before i can use it.
Is Apple going to come out with a fix or are we going to eternally suffer indefinitley.

    Hi Eric,
I don't know why it didn't work before, but here is the most recent errol log.  It crashed again about an hour later.  If there is a solution, i would greatly appreciate knowing what it is because I can't enjoy using my computer anymore because of these constant crasahes.
    Thanks for your time.

  • IMac screen freezes

Hi my iMac late 2009 27 inch has started to have a fault.
Randomly the screen freezes with little pixelated blocks. The mouse cursor still moves around but I can not click onto anything. I have to pull the power lead out to turn off.
Its running osx 10.8.4 and is a intel 2.66ghx i5 model with Radeon HD4850
    Heres image

    any help would be great

But isn't the GPU a part of the logic board? So it'll be a logic board replacement then..? or is 2009 different?

  • 24" iMac Screen Freezes since 10.6.3 update - pls help!

I don't know if this is just coincidence or not, but since updating my iMac to 10.6.3 it keeps on crashing. On 3 separate occasions today, whilst using my Mac the screen has gone completely black with thin white lines down it.....see pic below:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6SYzhCgVYEU5TBKqRfOQ1Q?feat=directlink
The fans and hard disk are still running but it will not respond to any keyboard or mouse presses - I simply have to turn it off by holding the power button in.
It will then restart as usual.
Anyone got any ideas? Do you think that if I was to re-install Mac OS X from my original install disk it could solve the issue?
    Thanks
    Darren

Experiencing the exact same issue - usually when using iTunes or Safari.
Screen becomes garbled with junk video artifacts, network connection drops and then the only thing I can do is move the mouse around. I cannot interact with the screen at all. The only "fix" is to do a hard power-down via the power button on back.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the freeze - it is not reproducible in any timeframe or activity.
I attempted the following to rectify:
    • Reformat
    • Reinstall 10.6.0 from SL DVD
    • Created entirely new user
    • Repaired permissions via Disk Utility on first login
    • Restarted
    • Updated OS to 10.6.3 from Combo update
    • Repaired permissions via Disk Utility again
    • Restarted three times to build up caches
    • System froze as before after roughly 25 minutes of web browsing and browsing iTunes Store
This points to a major graphics update bug - there is not other explanation. I have never had this kind of freeze in the two + years that I have owned this machine.
It has happened 6 times since 10.6.3 was installed.

  • IMAC screen freezes and goes blue....

this just started yesterday - I did not add any programs or update any software recently. I have since added Norton and scanned for viruses.
PROBLEM: my system freezes and the screen goes blue. It does not "wake" back up right away and after it goes blue a few times, it stays blue and I have to hard boot. If I leave the system off for about an hour, I'll get a few hours out of it before this happens.
DIAG: As stated above, I checked for viruses. I also ran all available diagnostics, and am fresh out of new ideas. Since I can't open my iMac without voiding the warrantee, I can't check for any possible burst or bulging capacitors. I disconnected all perperials and still have the same issue.
HYPOTHESIS: I am heavily leaning toward a hardware problem, but before I take the trip to the Apple store, I wanted to reach out to the forum to see if anyone else has had this problem?
This is an early 2006 Intel based 20" iMac that I have been running (24x7) since late August 2006. I never had an issue with my first iMac (pre-Intel).
    HELP!!!
    intel IMAC 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    silentpartner,
Unless your issues match a known problem, (wouldn't appear too likely if no result from the Apple Hardware Test) before Apple will accept your iMac for hardware repairs, you'll have to prove it's not a software issue by reinstalling the OS. FWIW, if it's a hardware issue and in particular if the hard drive needs replacing, you'll want to back up your important data anyway, prior to turning it in for any repair.

  • 2008 24" iMac screen freeze issue?  Is there a recall?

Hello, I have a late 2008 24" imac 2.8ghz ati 2600 running mavericks, sometimes i get solid colors or rainbow paterns or other digital artifacts that freeze and require a hard boot. Is this a recall issue?  there seems to be many with this problem, no kext work, Clean installed downgrading OS, pram flashing or any other solution seems to work, it doesnt seem related to heat and happens seemingly at random whether iunder load or not.  It's done this since I got it but I was stationed overseas and nothing could be done at the time, of course now I'm a full time student on a fixed GI stipend and can't replace my computer.  If so many people have this issue, and it appears to be hardware/manufacture related, why can I find nothing about a recall?

  • My iMac Screen Freezing

For christmas i got this iMac 21 inch and have had no problems but the last two days my screen looks like it has froze and splits the screen as shown in picture (sorry for bad quality). is this a serious problem?
if you have any ideas on how this could be fixed please comment.

Did you try installing the iMac Graphics Firmware Update 3.0? You can download it here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1444
It reportedly addresses "a graphics issue that may cause an iMac to hang under certain conditions."

  • IMac Screen Freezing

Over the last 2 days our Mac has decided to freeze like the rest of Britain!
There is no menu bar at top of screen, though the dashboard is displayed.
Am having to do a hard shutdown and re-boot.
I have upgraded my software online as promted in the last 2 weeks.
I am not a competent Mac user and need help!!

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Hard shutdowns can also cause this. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

I have to restart my computer after it has been in sleep mode 2,3 and sometimes 4 times. It just goes black
and will not respond to anything. I have to reset the computer by pressing the on/off switch.
This is starting to anoing me big time. I have a MacBook Pro (2010) where Lion runs fine.
Is it so that Mac thinks that my iMac 2008 is out of date?

Grafic  NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB

Thanks for all the help on this matter! Really good to know that help is out there!
I just got my Mac back from repair. They found that one of the RAM was defect.

  • IMac  Screen Freeze

From time to time; as I may be reading my email; a window suddenly opens with a written message, "You Must Restart Your Computer" in English, French, and Chinese. But lately; around Feb. 20/06, this nuisance has been happening with increasing frequency. Does anyone else have the same problem? Please reply by email: [email protected]
    Mr. M. Dunsky

Answering quickly, what you're seeing is called a kernel panic. You can read more about what causes these and steps to take here:
    What's a "kernel panic"? (Mac OS X)
    and here:
FJ: Kernel Panics ? Don't panic too !
If you need further assistance, I'd suggest you try asking in the iMac area appropriate for your model - the iMac (Flat Panel) area if you have the G4 iMac, or the iMac (CRT) area if you have an older G3 iMac. This forum is for the new Intel-based iMac and so perhaps not the most likely place for you to get a quick and accurate response.
    Good luck.

  • Help! 24" iMac screen turns solid colors, freezes

    Hello everyone,
I have a 3.06 GHz, 4 GB, iMac running 10.6.1. and I have a weird problem: while I was running Windows 7 under Boot Camp, during a simple task, my screen suddenly turned a solid shade of gray. Having no other option, I held the power button, turned off the computer, and turned it back on.
When I booted back to OS X, it happened again immediately upon opening iTunes. This time the color was solid black. Concerned, I turned off the computer, waited a moment and booted it back up in Safe Mode, where I currently have no problems whatsoever. From Safe Mode I repaired my disk permissions, cleared my caches, and zapped the PRAM while restarting my computer back into normal mode. Unfortunately the problem persists, this time my screen turning a solid shade of dark purple.
I'm going to call Apple Care in the morning, but has anyone heard of an issue like this? I searched the forums for a solution, but wasn't sure what terms to search for. If anyone has any advice or questions, please let me know!
(Archive and installed Snow Leopard a while back, when it was fairly new, haven't had any problems like this before. Computer seems to run perfectly fine in Safe Mode, vs normal when it immediately becomes unusable upon undergoing a task. Windows 7 no longer able to get to the desktop.)

I, too, have a iMac 24" 3.06GHz and am having the same problem.
I did all the standard torubleshooting tasks, zapping PRAM, repair disc, resetting SMC... etc. and I even went as far as reformatting my hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard just so I can eliminate the possibility of it being a software issue.
I then ran all the hardware tests I could think of including TechTool Pro and Apple's own Hardware Test from the discs that came with the iMac and also a tool I found online called Memtest+. Nothing, no errors, none.
Finally, I lugged this heavy beast to the local Apple Store and after convincing the "Genuis" that I am no idiot and I did everything I could on my end, they decided that it may be either the logicboard, or more likely the graphics card, or maybe even both. They took it for a few days to run some hardware tests that are apparently not available to the consumers. At this point I was actually HOPING they would find something wrong with it. Five days later, the Apple Store called me and told me the "good news", which is that the only thing they could find wrong with the iMac was a fan needed to be replaced. I trusted the Apple "Genuises" and thanked them when I picked up my iMac. However, when I went home that night, the iMac started freezing again. I called the Apple Store and told them the problem and this time they might as well have just called me a crazy liar. They took it in anyway and told me they would run more of these "special tests". Three days later they called and told me nothing was wrong with my iMac. Not sure what my point is.
Just as a side note, I left my iMac on all night playing videos, something that would heat up the machine, but it was fine, no freezes. But if I play games on it for more than an hour and it would freeze.

  • How do I get an iMac to automatically restart when screen freezes and computer has to be restarted at plug

Occasionally the screen on the Imac will freeze and the compute has to be restarted at the plug, but when the plug is switched back on the computer only switches back on fully with the screen coming on if you switch a button around the back of the computer, but I remember when using an iMac G4 it would come on automatically when th computer was switched on at the plug. Is there any setting or any software that will automatically restart the computer when the computer is off and I restart it at the plug?

You cannot, what you need to do is find out why your computer is freezing. Perhaps you can shed some light by posting an EtreCheck report and we can see how your system is configured and look for any obvious red flags. You can get EtreCheck by clicking http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

  • My imac screen works fine but it keeps flikering and freezing whats wrong with it

my imac screen works fine but it keeps flikering and freezing whats wrong with it? theres no crack or problem with it it just freeze's ande flikers

It sounds as if your graphics chip (on the logic board) is failing.  The other answer could be that your screen is not well, but I lean more towards the graphics chip.  If you have Apple care or are still under warranty, call Apple.
