24" Intel iMac with Samsung T220 as second monitor

Hello!
Recently got an iMac with a Radeon 4850 video card which I am generally very pleased with, however..
Before I got it I used a Samsung T220 as my main monitor which provided a crisp and colourful display. When I got the iMac I decided to use it as a second monitor so ordered a miniDisplay port to DVI adaptor.
Now the issue is that while it appears to be allowing the T220 to output to it's maximum resolution (1680 x 1050) the picture still appears to be blurry. On top of this the colours appear washed out and the contrast (20,000:1) seems very low compared to when I used the monitor with my PC.
I've spent hours attempting to calibrate the monitor and playing around with colours and settings. I am using the DVI-D cable supplied with the Samsung.
Any thoughts? Do I need to update any drivers or software or is it something more fundamental.

Some display settings are stored in PRAM, so if you have not done so already, try resetting PRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If there is a reset button on the display (often a recessed button), or a reset-to-default command in the display's on-screen menu, try using that as well.
There was one firmware update involving that video card

It may already be installed. You can check your current Boot ROM Version by running System Profiler and selecting Hardware in the sidebar.

  • 20 inch Intel iMac with 512 MB RAM:  is an additional 512 or 1 gB stick bet

I have a stock 20 inch Intel iMac with 512 MB of RAM.
I've read that this computer uses dual channel RAM, so I am wondering whether an additional 512 MB of RAM or an unsymmetrical 1 GB RAM stick would be better?
Also, anyone know who makes the OEM 512 MB stick and where to get compatible memory for my iMac?

"anyone know who makes the OEM 512 MB stick and where to get compatible memory for my iMac?"
Regardless who made your OEM module, it will have a label with their name and the product specs (or at least a product number, which, on a page at their website, can be decoded for its exact specs).
Mine was made by the U.S. company Micron Technology at their Singapore factory, and the label states that the module is lead free. A similar Micron module can be purchased online from Micron's wholly owned subsidiary Crucial Technology, which is their retailing arm. Retail customers can not order directly from Micron, just as they can not order directly from either Samsung or Hynix, the other two large OEM RAM manufacturers.
"I am wondering whether an additional 512 MB of RAM or an unsymmetrical 1 GB RAM stick would be better?"
I agree that more RAM is better, will make it snappier, and prefer to buy my 1GB stick of RAM from Crucial, as I know it will be compatible for my Mac and its OEM stick (regardless of the maker) as long as I use their online Mac selector tool.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • My 2007 intel imac ejects discs within 2 seconds

My 2007 intel imac ejects discs within 2 seconds.  The last time I used my disc hardware was to install software for a new Cannon all in one.  It worked perfectly.  I have tried many discs including one movie made on this same machine.  Pleease help me troubleshoot before I have to transport my computer to the Apple store.   Thank you in advance.

It could be that the laser has dust on it; a laser cleaning disk is available at stores which specialize in audio and video- BestBuy, or OfficeDepot would be a place to start. Run a cleaning session to see how that plays out. It could be the optical drive itself. The best approach is first to try steps that do not involve transporting your iMac as you indicate.

  • Intel iMac with failed LogicBoard - can I use it as display for my MacMini?

I have a Intel iMac with failed logic board (the display comes up while booting sometimes and sometimes, it doesn't). I bought a Mac Mini afterwards. I connected it to a Dell monitor with HDMI and the results aren't great. I experience interminttent video losses (Grains on screen every 1 minute or so).
So, I am now thinking about using my failed intel Imac as a display. Will it work?

No, the failed imac is dead until you replace the logic board.

  • How do I connect an older imac to my new imac to use as a second monitor?

    Hi !
I was wondering if it were possible to  connect an older imac to my new imac to use as a second monitor?
My older imac is from 2006. The new one is a 2012 imac.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

Look this article over, the key is to connect either mini display port or thunderbolt and using CMD+F2, let me know if this helps or if it doesn't work out. I'll find another solution if this doesn't work Joel ^_^

  • Intel iMac with 10.5.8 - Grey Screen of Death but worse please help!

Okay, this has happened three times now in six months, and I'm about to go out of my mind. Everytime it's a little different but basically:
My iMac becomes unresponsive, whether by a system lock up, or I wake up in the morning (like this morning) to a black screen with the white light still on, as if it were asleep. Nothing I do wakes the computer or otherwise makes it respond, so I hold the power button down for a few seconds and it shuts off.
Now, when I boot up, I get a grey screen with the Apple logo with the spinning black/grey pinwheel.
Inserting a CD does nothing. In fact, now my only install CD of Leopard is stuck in the slot-loading drive. I've tried everything I can to eject it: hold down eject on boot, left mouse button on boot, option on boot, commandoption+pr, command+v, etc. etc. etc.
I'm a software developer for OS X and have extensive hardware knowledge, so I kind of know a bit about what I'm doing.
The iMac will not boot off of a CD. It doesn't even recognize the CD. I have an external USB 2.0 hard drive with a current Time Machine backup, but I don't think those are bootable.
Anyway, in the past, to resolve this issue, I've had to take the iMac apart, put the internal hard drive into an external enclosure, and mount the drive onto my MacBook Pro. Interestingly enough, when I do this the drive mounts perfectly fine and shows all files exactly as they should be. So it's something to do with Leopard destroying it's boot record, or some other system configuration.
Even worse, I cannot simply reinstall Mac OS X from the laptop, because the installer says the hard drive needs to be formatted before an install can occur. So either way I'm losing all my data (even though as I said I have a current backup).
Well this time I haven't taken it apart yet. But the install CD is stuck in the drive. Even if I got the hard drive out, and mounted on my MacBook, my other install CD is too damaged to use, so I MUST get this CD out of the iMac.
    My questions are:
What do you do when the grey screen of death occurs, and the computer won't even boot off of the CD?
What do you do to get a CD stuck in an iMac out? Especially when the iMac is in the grey screen of death mode?
What in the world is causing this to happen EVERY 3-6 MONTHS??!
Someone please help... I'm going insane.

Hi I am having the identical problem with my 24" intel iMac 2007..... Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I'm on round 3 now and with a completely blank grey screen and it won't start up from the disk 1.. I also have diskwarrior and techtool pro as well as the osx leopard and snow leopard disk... The HD is new.. Replaced by apple 3 months ago.. Don't know the cause the first time this happened about 9 months ago.. 2nd time, 6 months ago it never rebooted from the office for mac 2008 critical update... Did a clean install after backing up to TC... Took it to apple replaced HD even though it appeared ok, they checked all hardware and I ran techtool pro daily ever since. Last week software update had several updates avail. Office for mac being one of them.. I updated and have never booted since.. . I swear to never ever use another Microsoft product as long as I live if I can just fix this once more... Help me please

  • 20" Intel iMac and Samsung Laser Printer

I ordered my new 20" Intel iMac last Saturday, the 14th. From day one, it said estimated ship was Jan. 24th. Yesterday I checked the status and it still said the 24th, but it also said estimated delivery for Jan. 31st. I was sad because when i ordered it, it said estimated ship 3-5 business days. Jan. 24th would be longer than that. So I checked my e-mail this morning, and lo and behold, I have an e-mail from Apple saying my new computer shipped out this morning, making it 5 business days since I ordered it (4 if they considered Monday a holiday). I just wanted to reassure others that the ship date may not be as late as it's estimated.
My question is this... I have a Samsung laser printer (the ML-1740) hooked up to my fiance's Windows XP machine. My Sony Vaio desktop (which I'm giving to my mom) can see the printer just fine. It prints just as if it was hooked up to it. My Powerbook however, cannot see the Samsung printer over the network. I'm a nursing student and print out tons of text only stuff, so I really need to use the laser printer with my new Mac. I've see a lot of different discussions on Mac drivers for this particular model, but I haven't tried any of them on my Powerbook, and I'm curious as to whether or not any of them would even work with the new Intel Mac. My other question is whether or not there is any way I can get my iMac to see the printer on the Windows. I don't necessarily have to install drivers on the Mac if I don't need to. I just need a solution to make it work. If I have to install something, that's fine. If I can just make it print over the network, that's great too. I don't ever use any of the settings the Samsung software provides, so just basic printing is fine. I just don't want to have to e-mail all my documents to myself and then go to the Windows machine to have to print. I apologize if any of this is confusing. What are some of the things I can try to make this work? Or can someone point me in another direction to get the answers. I was stupid in not realizing that the printer didn't support Mac OS X when I bought it, even though I already have one Mac. Thanks so much! I love these forums!

My shipping was the same way, maybe they had a supply shortage of RAM or just a long queue of computers waiting for upgrades and not enough people to perform them. Mine shipped today with an estimate of for the 25th.
I have looked around on Apples site and couldn't find anything about supported printers. You will have to install some form of driver on the Mac. You will have to make sure the PC has it shared correctly. Read about printer sharing in the windows help files. I don't know any more off hand.

  • Intel Imac with bad logic board.

The logic board on my 20" Intel Imac failed(according to the diagnosis form the tech at the Apple Store) and will require a $900+ dollar repair....a tad bit high considering it's age, the cost of the machine in late 2006 and the going prices of the new Imacs! Anyone know of a lower priced repair option or a way to salvage the machine, or is it now a very large paperweight?
I know that I apparently should've gotten Apple Care, but I've never had such a catastrophic Mac failure in the 12 years I've been dealing with the machines. Judging by the lines/wait for service at the Apple store maybe it's a good idea next time...although with all the problems the new machines seem to be having it seems a bit like extortion and maybe they should just raise the prices and include it.

I have a similar problem that I'll describe hoping that it will contribute to this discussion and I'll ask a couple of questions. In December 2007 I bought an iMac 24 inch maxed out for speed and RAM and with the 750 gig hard drive. I had no problems until about three weeks ago when on startup I got grey hash marks all over the screen. When I selected the entire screen the grey hash disappeared and the computer seemed to run normally. I thought the problem was software related and began the long process of trying to find the culprit. Then two days ago I connected a video camera to the iMac to test the camera for the first time. It's a loaner from my school and is five years old. It seemed to be working fine. I then turned off the camera but left it connected to the computer by the firewire cable and put the computer to sleep. THAT was probably a mistake. When I tried to wake the computer it would not respond. There was a DVD in the machine and when I pushed the power button I could hear the DVD player makes it startup sounds and could hear the CD spin. Also I could hear the fans come on but the startup BONG never sounded. I disconnected all cables, pulled out the power cord for various lengths of time from 30 seconds to ten hours but nothing changed. I called Apple this morning and was told it sounds like a blown logic board which is what I was thinking. They will pick up the iMac day after tomorrow. When I talked to the Apple person this morning it didn't occur to me to ask about my chances of getting this repair done for free since I'm still within the one-year warranty period. I'll call when they open tomorrow morning but what are my chances of getting the repair done free? I've been using Macs since the Mac Plus came out but have never had a failure within one year so have no experience with the warranty. I did not buy Apple Care for this computer and never have but I will the next time. Thanks in advance for any comments.

  • New intel iMac with reduction on Microsoft Office 2004

    Hi.
I am seriously considering buying a new iMac Intel Core Duo. If i order before the end of january along with Microsoft office, i can get upto 50% off office.
I know that the current version of office will run fine on the new iMac Intel Core Duo using 'Rosetta' and that they are developing a new version to be released in march that will run native on the intel imac.
Therefore, if i buy office with my iMac now, I will not have the native version and I will have to buy the new version again?
I am quite confused and really unsure what to do?
Would it be worth me buying office now?
Will i be able to upgrade to the new version for free?
.... I dont understand why apple are selling a version of office with the new iMacs if it is not even the proper software.
Please help me as I am unsure of what to do.
    Thanks a lot in advance...

I'm not positive on this but I think I remember, during the keynote speech, the woman that was from the MSBU saying the updates would be available for download at no charge. Might be worth looking at that part of the keynote to be sure. I don't remember the date she said they would be available though.

I was wrong. I just watched that part of the keynote again and there will be updates available for download for free but not the universal binaries. My bad.

  • Power pc g5 or intel imac with compressor

    This is my present computer:
    iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (2008 model)
4 gigs of 800 mhz ddr2 sdram (this is the max ram for this computer! )
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
Hard drive: 465 gig (I use mainly external drives for editing)
I use this mainly for video editing with final cut studio 2.
    Rendering in compressor takes forever!!!
A friend suggested I pick up a used G5 Power PC.
I found this one, here are the specs:
APPLE POWER MAC G5 PowerPC DUAL CORE (2 x 2 GHZ)
    System Mac OSX 10.5.8
    RAM 12 GB
1 Hard drive of 160 Gb
    Superdrive 16x CD/DVD/DL DVD (32x)
Video card NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (VRAM 256 Mb)
    3 open PCI-Express expansion slots.
    1x FireWire 800
    3x FireWire 400
    4x USB 1 and 2
    2x Ethernet Port
    2x Displays ports
Is this insanity or a smart move to move over to the older G5.
According to my friend, the older G5s are much better at processing video.
Is a dual 2 GHZ processor enough or would I need a 2.3 or 2.5?
OR is there another option that someone might be able to suggest?
Thank you so much for your advice
    Bill

I am fairly sure that the old G5 will not perform anywhere near as well as the Intel iMac.
I don't know what you are doing that "Takes forever" but there are some settings in Compressor, which if selected, will take many times longer without producing much of an improvement.
Can you give specific examples of exactly what you are doing and with which settings/presets etc. together with the time taken, so that we can determine whether it is excessive or not.

  • Anyone using a NEW intell iMac with Logic?

I've got many great responses on both sides to my question regarding my quest to determine which machine to use with Logic -- new Mac Pro (the ultimate) or new iMac (likely cover my bases for a long while and save major cash now). One point raised against iMac was fan noise smack dab in the middle of the listening field with the older iMacs. So a sub question to my original is this:
Are there any NEW intell iMac users out there who are using Logic? Is fan noise a problem? Generally, how do you like the iMac's feasibility as a music workstation with Logic? How many tracks/effects are you running and how is it working for you?

Before those concerns are completely alleviated, go over to the iMac hardware forum and do a search for firewire issues. Like actual physical problems with the jacks on the 20" iMac and having drives just completely "disappear".
the reason you will find issues including firewire ones on the imac forum is because it is a forum for people with issues. it may or may not be the case that there is a subsantial issue with FW on the intel imacs, but obviously people who are having issues are going to pop up there making it seem like everyone is having an issue.
for certain types of music production, an imac would be completely unsuitable. but for others it will be ideal.
there drawback of having 800 and 400 FW bus shared is that if you have a 400 device it will slow down 800 devices to 400. that means it would be ideal for impiro to have either both FW drive and interface as 800's or not go to any further expense of getting an 800 hard drive to use for audio since he would not beneift from the speed.
not a great big deal IMO.
iMac DOES lack expandibility, but it doesn't lack horses. actually i would say (and have said) that impiro would do better with an older tower to allow for expandability because he doesn't need that many horses to do what he needs to do. and i certainly feel that it is unnecessary to spend money on a computer that would be better spent on other things relating to the move to computer based music mixing.
never-the-less, the kind of live musician-audio-based music impiro is going to be making is childs play for modern computers. he will be able to run loads of tracks and plug-ins before a new imac will even break a sweat. even with an interface and a FW drive on 1 bus running at 400. he just won't be able to run loads and loads.
and man....even if he decides to get more heavily into it and start buying third party cards and this that and the next thing he can look at the next computer being a tower. personally, i am changing my computer every 3 years or less - it'll take him at least that long to find the ceiling on a new imac.

  • Connect two Intel iMacs with Ethernet

I wish to transfer files between two Intel iMacs running 10.4.9. I have a suitable ethernet cable I think. I tried to follow an illustrated article online and got as as far as using GO>ConnectServer. The resulting dialogue box 'sees' the other computer and I am then asked to enter my password as a registered user. The login password happens to be the same for both machines but the passwork is not accepted.
I have tried to connect as a guest, but this only gives me a drop box that refuses to open because of insufficient privildges.
Rather confused now. Any suggestions from those more enlightened please??

    Alan
Sounds like your connected with file sharing on, you stated "I have tried to connect as a guest, but this only gives me a drop box that refuses to open because of insufficient privileges." this is typical by default when attempting to "view" another's Drop Box over a network. Have you tried transferring a file by dragging it into the others Drop Box?
In the Get Info did you click on the lock to enable you to change permissions?
If it is a network problem, are the computers in range of each other to create a wireless network? (New 17 and 24 iMacs, Wireless card?)
"All this may be a 10.4.9 problem"
Hard to say. My dealings with 10.4.9 can be read on this thread http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4271334#4271334 Forgive my antics, I was a bit steamed at the time

  • Intel iMac with new usb aluminum keyboard will not recognize boot options

I have a first gen Intel iMac core duo 20". After I replaced the old usb keyboard with the new aluminum usb keyboard, I can no longer boot into single-user mode, select to boot from a different volume (including boot camp), boot from a CD, or boot into target mode. All of the boot key options no longer work. These options do work with an older Apple keyboard. I have all the latest updates including the latest firmware and keyboard drivers. Help Apple, I really need to boot into these different options and with the new keyboard, I can't. I have read several other accounts of this on other sites.

I have an early 2006 intel iMac and am having the same problem with the new keyboard. Called AppleCare, who sent me to the local Apple Store after trying several minutes in vain to cure the problem.
One of the Genius's at the Apple Store pulled up Article 306893, Apple Keyboard (2007): Cannot boot to Startup Manager. This is a document that's apparently not available to the public, as I have the printed copy, but have been unable to pull it up in my searches.
The issue is some intel-based iMacs and Mac mini computers shipped prior to 2007 may not boot to the Startup Manager when holding down the Option key on the aluminum keyboard (2007).
My iMac is listed among the products affected.
The solution they offer is to follow these steps:
    1. While starting the computer, point the Apple remote at the computer and hold down the Menu button. The computer should boot into the Startup manager.
    2. Use the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons to select the desired boot volume.
    3. Once the desired boot volume is selected, press the Play / Pause button to continue booting.
Hope this helps. It works for my system. Still doesn't solve the keyboard issue but offers an acceptable workaround.
