2960-X vs 2960 QOS

I am configuring QOS for some 2960-X's for a new deployment that also has some 2960's. The current 2960's already have auto qos configured. When I configured auto qos voip trust for the 2960-X, I noticed there were not any ingress queues and the all of the numbers for the queues were different. Should this be a concern at all if the switches are trunked together or even if they aren't? I am not that proficient with QOS yet. See below for configs.

IMO, AutoQoS is always a concern (as are device defaults, without it).
If you're doing to "do" QoS, you should have a policy that serves your service needs, and configurations to support it.  AutoQoS might, or might not, be exactly what you need.
If you're not proficient with QoS, on most LANs, you might actually be better off disabling it.

  • Adding 2960-X to 2960-S Stack

    i purchased a new 2960-X switch
    i  would like to add it to an existing 2 switch 2960-s stack
    i understand i need to downgrade the stack speed on the 2960-x with :
    switch stack port-speed 10
    do the IOS version need to be identical on all switches?
    i have:

    2960-x =  15.0(2)EX3
    if they do need to be identical, whats the best way to do this?

    Yes, use this command with a .tar file to upgrade all switches in the stack.
    Here is an example of using the `archive download-sw` command to upgrade a stack of Cisco Catalyst 2960-S switches. Notice that the number of members in the stack is not relevant to this command. By default all members are upgraded unless the network admin uses the options to do otherwise. The TFTP IP address is 192.168.1.1, and the tar file name is c2960s-universalk9-tar.122.53.SE.tar

  • Aironet 1142 as supplicant to 2960 switch (NEAT/CISP/MAB)

    Hello!
    First, my configuration, (then the problem down below):
    I have an Aironet 1142 with mulitple SSIDs [mapped to VLANs] connected to Gi1/0/2 on a 2960 switch in a user-accessible area.  This switch is uplinked to another 2960 switch in a wiring closet, and the Microsoft NPS server is connected to the wiring closet 2960.
    Aironet -- 2960 [user area] --- 2960 [closet] -- NPS RADIUS
    I have the user-area 2960 configured as an authenticator switch for dot1x, and port Gi1/0/2 is authenticating the Aironet via MAB to RADIUS.  RADIUS is sending VSA device-traffic-class=switch to the 2960.  The closet-2960 has no special 802.1x configuration, nor is it an authenticator swtich; it just has a manually-configured trunk port to the user-area 2960 [for now; i'm trying to take this one step at a time!].
    The user-area 2960 correctly converts port Gi1/0/1 to a trunk port when the Aironet is authenticated [via MAB].  The Aironet boots up, the port is opened, I can ping the Aironet on the native VLAN, and all is well [so it seems].  The Aironet's dot11Radio is configured for two SSIDs and mapped to VLANs, which are being spanned via STP thru the user-area 2960 and the closet-2960.  STP is correct and verified on all switches.
    I have DHCP snooping configured on the user-area 2960 but only for VLAN 1 [but NOT the wireless user VLANs], the trunk port to the closet 2960 is a trusted port.  Hosts on the wired ports on the user-area 2960 are able to get DHCP IPs.  On the Aironet, "show dot11 associations" shows hosts on the SSIDs are getting DHCP addresses.  Again, I am *NOT* running dhcp snooping on wireless SSID VLANs [i read elsewhere that can cause problems as users roam between Aironets].
    I do have CISP configured on the user-area 2960.  I do not have CISP configured on the closet-2960 [best I can tell, that's not required at this stage, but I could be wrong].
    Despite the alleged documentation, I could not get the Aironet to use a dot1x credentials profile to authenticate to NPS/RADIUS as an 802.1x supplicant, which is why I resorted to MAB for this exercise.  The Aironet simply would not run dot1x [best I could tell].  The documentation and configuration didn't seem complex, so I was quite confused.
    I have upgraded the Aironet to the latest 12.4(25d)JA2 software, and the 2960 is at 12.2(55)SE7 [i saw 12.2(58) has some issues, but i'm willing to be persuaded otherwise, based on sound advice].
    Ok, now the problem:  
    Users on the guest wireless SSID (Vlan 20) say they cannot connect.  Yep, classic.  VLAN 20 is trunked and spanned to all the sufficient places.  The Aironet shows users in the associations list for that SSID with IP addresses from the DHCP server!  DHCP snooping is not configured on that VLAN. 
    I read another support forum post saying CISP and MAB could cause problems with "disappearing" ARP entries.  I appear to have that problem.  However, the user on the Staff wireless (VLAN 10) has full access.  Am I running into a problem with "multi-host" authentication config?  Via tcpdump on my firewall, I see nothing but broadcast and multicast traffic coming from a host on VLAN 20.  What puzzles me is how I do see *SOME* traffic from a VLAN 20 host on this SSID, but no unicast traffic! Argh!

    Ok, what am I missing??

    The problem lies in the wired Ethernet port on the Aironet.  I did not submit that configuration because I thought it was simple and unrelated.  Here is what I had:

    The correct configuration should have been:

    The line "no bridge-group 20 unicast-flooding" should not be applied to the wired port.  That's stupid.   With that erroneous command, the wired port will forward only broadcast and multicast traffic!  Unicast traffic will be dropped.  Oops.
    However, I do not understand why applying this to the radio interfaces has no effect there.  I have yet to find any conclusive detailed answers, either.  Regardless, my original problem is fixed.

    and what about voice feature diffrences between 2950 and 2960 ?
    should i use 2960 at access layer ?
    what is better to use at access layer ?

    Cisco 2960 is very similar to 2950 offering advanced quality of service (QoS), Security features with few notable differences like Performance,maximum MTU size,no of acl entries,qos policies...
    would suggst to check these data sheets to know more about the same.

    I'm looking for switch to accompany Cisco ASA 5520 in data center, with 20+ GE ports and no need for PoE.
    I would like to understand the difference between Cisco SG300-28, Cisco SGE2000 and Cisco Catalyst 2960, 2960-C and 2960-S Series (except specific number of ports). As far as I can see the Cisco SGE2000 has 4x SFP and is stackable unlike the SG300 with 2x miniGBIC/SFP, but not much else. Cisco Catalyst 2960 series offers some additional features like USB storage, but I can't imagine I will need that.
    Any suggestions?

  • 2960x & 2960s stacking?

    Hey guys recently I tried to introduce a 2960x switch into a 2960s stack.
    I prepped the bpth switches and made sure the prefer sdm was set to default as well as setting the stack port speed on the 2960s stack to 10 so its would be compatible.
    Once i stacked the switches i got a version mismatch error and an auto upgrade message, after waiting roughly 40 minutes with no succcessful upgrade i removed the X switch from the stack

    Mixed Stacks: FlexStack and FlexStack-Plus
    The 2960-S and 2960-X support a mixed stack of 2960 models. All  these 2960 models run the FlexStack protocol, allowing them to be  stacked together into a single stack. The exception is the 2960-XR does  not stack with either the 2960-X or the 2960-S. The 2960-XR has the  IP-Lite feature set, and this is not compatible with the LAN Base  feature set on the 2960-X and 2960-XR. Table 2 shows all the allowed  mixed stack combinations. What is crucial is the Cisco IOS Software  feature set. All 2960 models with the LAN Base Cisco IOS Software  feature set can stack together.

    When the 2960-S and 2960-X members are stacked together, the entire  stack (even the 2960-X members) fall back to FlexStack capabilities.  Mixing 2960 members limits the max stack members to four, and 20Gbps  stack bandwidth per member, and 40Gbps per stack.

  • What is the recommenden access port QoS configuration for 8900/9900 video enabled phones

    we are currently starting to roll out some video enabled 9900 and 8900 phones in our network. In the past we did not use video and configured the access ports on our Catalyst 2960 switches with "auto qos voip ciscp-phone". This however creates a policy which does not include a class-map to correctly handle the AF41 video traffic coming from those phones. I have thougth about extending the autoqos policy with a AF41 class-map but am not sure if this is the right way to do it.

    You have to keep this table on your mind. Your configuration is fine if your configuration for SD video , but if for HD video , it is not ok you have to change video bandwidth at least 5M.

    *Interactive Video "AF41"- Sensitive but can tolerate packet loss of about 1% and latency almost same as voice.

    *HD video conference will require between 5M to 16M , but SD video conference will use 384K to 1 M
    Note:-Video QOS , if you will assume that your video conference will use around 384K , you have to add 20% because video conference include voice so the total bandwidth 460K.

  • Why does mls qos trust dscp dissapear after reboot?

    The command takes but after reboot, Invlaid inputs detected show up and "mls qos tust dscp" is gone from every interface.
    Happens on both 2960-24PC-S / 2960-48PST-S switches.

    If i don't include the global 'mls qos' command then the voice packets keep the dscp 46 value.  If I add the mls qos command this causes the switch to set the dscp values to zero.

    The flow is the next:
    Computer with CIPC --------> Switch 2960 or 3560 or 3750 ------------------> switch core ---------------> CIPC
    I have wireshark in a port mirror on switch 2960, 3560 and 3750. In wireshark I always see the packets marked with default label.

  • MLS QOS on 2960S

    Enabling MLS QOS on 2960S seems to "throttle" bandwidth when using a specific Mitel 5320 phone.  I have a PC behind the Mitel and the performance is way slower.  Validated via a speed test.  Once I remove the MLS QOS globally, the performance is greatly improved, about doubled.  This is causing some issues as users with this particular phone attached with a PC behind the phone are starting to complain.  What could be causing this or what settings to overcome this?

    Enabling QoS on a 2960/3560/3750, using defaults, often results in slow transfer performance.  This because the default buffer settings often increase drop rates in the newly enabled egress queues.  Manual buffer tuning might mitigate.

  • Operations Manager Node to Node test

    Quick question about some Node to Node test.
    I have a 6509 VSS and a 2960S.  They are connected via 2x1GB MultiChassis Etherchannel.
    I have a Ping Echo test configured in Operatons Manager. Source is the 6500 and Destination is the 2960S.
    The IP QoS is set to IP Precedence = 7 (High)
    I had the Threshold configured for 20 msec Round Trip Response Time and 10 or more times per day the threshold was exceeded.   When I bumped the Threshold up to 50 msec I received less of the exceeded errors but still a handul per day.
    Does it seem odd that on a fast P2P link 50 msec is not high enough ?

  • Topology veiw is not showing in CS mars.

    Dear All, I have installed CS mars and discovered My lan switches through it. But it is not showing in topology veiw. Even topology itslef is not visible it is showing some errors.
    Is there any java version to be installed in the client machine to get the topology veiw ...

    I am using CM 4.0.6 and have gone through the devices which will be supported in CM 4.0.13.There i can see the switch model of
    Cisco Catalyst 2960-8TC-S Compact Switch
    1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.10061
    But in this scenario i am using 2960-8TC-L .As you suggested CM 4.0.6 will not support 2960-8TC-L . Can you please confirm both 2960-8TC and 2960-8TC-L are same and still i can use CM 4.0.13 to support  2960-8TC-L switch model.I have referred below link
