Adding 2960-X to 2960-S Stack

i purchased a new 2960-X switch
i  would like to add it to an existing 2 switch 2960-s stack
i understand i need to downgrade the stack speed on the 2960-x with :
switch stack port-speed 10
do the IOS version need to be identical on all switches?
i have:
2960-s = 12.2(55)SE3
2960-x =  15.0(2)EX3
if they do need to be identical, whats the best way to do this?
thanks

Yes, use this command with a .tar file to upgrade all switches in the stack.
Here is an example of using the `archive download-sw` command to upgrade a stack of Cisco Catalyst 2960-S switches. Notice that the number of members in the stack is not relevant to this command. By default all members are upgraded unless the network admin uses the options to do otherwise. The TFTP IP address is 192.168.1.1, and the tar file name is c2960s-universalk9-tar.122.53.SE.tar
Switch# archive download-sw tftp://192.168.1.1/c2960s-universalk9-tar.122.53.SE.tar

What are the steps to upgrade the IOS on a 2960-X stack using LMS 4.2?   Can I use the .bin file or do I need the.tar file?  Also, will this upgrade all the stack members or just the stack master?

By my count, you have ~100 devices in that building. I would expect many of the IP phones will have a PC attached. Why is your port count so high? 192 ports or 240 ports per the quotes seems like too many.
Also, you might want to check the 3650 switches. They are basically replacements for the 3750x with newer technology and the same price point.
It doesn't look like 3750 + 2960 makes sense. Why add another bottleneck and layer of troubleshooting if not necessary? Why not just stack the number of switches you need instead of adding a semi-distribution layer? Stacking provides much more throughput than copper uplinks. If you need more throughput to the cores, use 4 X 10G uplink interfaces.

  • 4500-x vss MEC to 2960-x stack

    (9) closets with 2960-x stacks

I'm having a difficult time trying to find documentation.
I have the (2) 4500-x configured with VSS and am trying to find info on connecting the 2960-x stacks.

    Hi,
    some info.
PAgP is supported in all platforms except the Cisco Catalyst 37xx stack configuration in which cross-stack EtherChannel (LACP) is required to have MEC-connectivity with the VSS. Because cross-stack EtherChannel does not support PAgP, it cannot use enhanced PAgP for dual-active detection. A common approach to resolve this gap in support is to use two EtherChannel links from the same stack member. This solution is a non-optimal design choice because it creates a single point-of-failure. If a stack member containing that EtherChannel fails, the whole connectivity from the stack fails. To resolve this single point-of-failure problem, you can put two dual-link EtherChannel group, each on separate stack member connected to VSS; however, it will create a looped topology. The loop-free topology requires a single EtherChannel bundle to be diversified over multiple members which in turn requires LACP.

  • 2960S StackWise/Stacking

    hi all,
we have a bunch of 2960-S switches on a site that we want to stack.
my question is, is it ok just to connect the stackwise cable accordingly, boot up the master switch first, backup next, and member last?
or would it be 'best' practice to put the switch x priority y command?
also, all switches have IP addresses for remote management already configured.
do we remove the IP address (for member) and retain only for the master/backup switch?

I haven't worked with 2960 stacks, but on the 3750 stacks, preprovisioning allows you to configure ports for switch members not actually active.  When the switch is added to the stack, it will immediately use the preprovisioned configuration.
The stack member to be added, can be completely "clean" or it might be "clean" but configured with a stack member number.  (The former, I recall, will take the first available set of preprovisioned information, the latter will take only the preprovisioned information for the member number set.)

  • Cisco 2960-s stack problem

    hi all,
i try to counfigure 2X 2960-S as stack , one is 48 ports and the other is 24 ports.
i configured the command switch 1 priority 14 and the renumber command.
when the switches is restarted the 48 port sw is the master and this is ok.
when i take the master down, the 24 ports SW is take the master , but when the master (48) is back to live , he is boot as member.
how can i force the 48 take the master again?
    thanks!

    Hello.
After a new stack master is elected and the previous stack master becomes available, the previous stack master does not resume its role as stack master.
    Per documentation:
A stack master retains its role unless one of these events occurs:
    The switch stack is reset.*
The stack master is removed from the switch stack.
The stack master is reset or powered off.
    The stack master fails.
The switch stack membership is increased by adding powered-on standalone switches or switch stacks.*
In the events marked by an asterisk (*), the current stack master might be reelected based on the listed factors.
PS: could you clarify why do you have the requirement?

Hi , i think only four 2960 SF switches can be stacked into a singe logical switch.

  • 2960-X stacking, 5 switches with interwoven 0.5 M cables

I am trying to understand how to connect 5 switches using 0.5 M cables only.  I have read this "best practices" document, but it leaves some unanswered questions.
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-2960-x-series-switches/white_paper_c11-728327.pdf
I would normally just daisy chain the switches and bring a connection from the bottom switch back up to the top to create a "ring" topology.  But the documentation also states that switches can be connected with "interweaved cables".  It makes no statement as to what if any performance considerations should be taken into account when designing stack interconnections, or whether this interwoven topology creates any operational complications.  The only requirements that I have seen is that each switch must have 2 operational FlexStack links in order to be fully redundant and to fully utilize all available bandwidth.  Does anyone have any guidance in this area?
Assuming no negative consequences by using the "interwoven" topology, does this make sense?
    Thanks,
    -Jeff

Well it probably wouldn't be confusing if I could find a clear set of ground rules.  The documentation mentions "FlexStack protocol", but the discussions seem to indicate that this is a control plane protocol. Do the stacking modules operate as ethernet bridges when making forwarding decisions like any other switch port?  If the answer is yes then at least I understand the principal of operation.  But now if you throw multi-chassis etherchannel uplinks into the mix divining general layer 2 paths becomes a little murky.
Although now that I look at it, using this cabling has an advantage over a straight ring topology.  Once a frame hits the stack it is never more than 2 hops away from it's destination.  With daisy-chained switches it could be up to 4 hops.  This is of course assuming standard 802.1d-like forwarding.  This may be an invalid assumption.  I don't see any way to get spanning tree info for the stack ports.
(EDIT:  standard ring topology would also have a maximum of 2 hops to any switch, not 4)

  • Cisco 2960-X stacking question

    Hi all,
We're planning buy 6 set of Cisco 2960-X with stacking with existing two firewall with HA function (please see attached diagram), if firewall 01 down will auto failover to firewall 02, is this network design good ?
Please some expert give us suggestion.
    Thanks

    1. Do 2960-X support 6 member stacking ?
2960X support a stack size of 8, however, you need to be careful.  The stacking speed of the 2960X is 20 Gbps.  So you need to know if stacking up 8 is beneficial or not.
    2. Do 2960-X support Bladeswitch stack cable ?
No.  The stacking cable for the 2960S/X/XR are specific only for this models.
    3. I think need buy stack module, right ?
    Stacking modules and stacking cables.

  • 2960S Cross Stack Etherchannel Issues

We have a stack of 3 2960S's switches connected to a Cisco 3750X via a 4 port copper Etherchannel, intermittently the users are losing connection to the internet and with a host connected to the Master switch running a continuos ping to the 3750X pings are lost, we have replaced the Master switch and both GLC-T's. We also split the stack and had a single 1Gb connection to each switch from the core, we ran continuos pings from hosts on each switch and the only one to drop pings was the one on the Master switch. Versions and configs below, any thoughts ?
    Version 3750X - 15.0(2) SE4
    Version 2960S - 15.0(2) SE5
Port-Channel Config 3750X in attached file called 3750x
Port-Channel Config 2960S in attached file called 2960s
Also auto QoS has been enabled on both 3750X and 2960S.
Nothing appears in the logs on both switches.

    Leo/Umesh,
Again thanks for the replies, I did a continous ping from a PC connected to the switch stack to an address on the Internet, I also had a continous ping going from another client on a different switch stack to the same internet address. The PC connected to the suspect switch stack dropped about 15 pings but the other PC was fine. I've now set up two syslog servers with the stack logging to one and the core to the other, also I've changed the stack master to be the middle switch which has no up links connected to it. Customer will start monitoring on Monday.

  • Catalyst 2960S switch stack support?

I have a customer with a new stack of four Catalyst 2960S switches.
Is this configuration supported by Onplus?
I can't seem to figure out the login access and enable access credentials
so that Onplus can backup the configuration of the stack.
    Jeff Bright
    Bright Systems
    Broken Arrow, OK

I also have a 2960S stack in my office. I checked my handy OnPlus iPhone App and it shows backup, restore, and firmware all equal 1 which I recall correctly means backup is supported. I'll double check when I get into the office to ensure backups are actually working.

  • 4500-X VSS and Dual-Active detection PAgP, using 2960-X access stacks

    Hi.
I think this may have been asked before but its not clear to me.
    I have 2 4500-X configured as a VSS pair, so a VSL link of 2 x 10Gig between them.
I have a number of Access stacks, built from 2600-X's
I have tried to configure dual active detection, which from what I read it is to use ePAgP or Dual-Active Fast hello Packets.
I do not have any additional SFP's to connect the 4500's together using Fast Hello, so ePAgP appears my only option
When I try and configure the access stack with an Etherchannel across 2 switches using PAgP I get the error -
command rejected by the 2960-x stack
%With PAgP enabled, all ports in the Channel should belong to the same switch
Command rejected (Port-channel11, Te1/0/1): Invalid etherchnl mode
From what I have read, PAgP cannot be configured across a stack, and people are recommending LACP as the method to configure the Etherchannnel, but How does that work with Dual-Active detection PAgP?
When I configuring Dual-Active detection PAgP, and made a couple of the MEC's trusted and configure using LACP active, then tried failing the VSL between the 4500's, each stack went into err disable on the trunk connections.
Question is! Does dual active detection PAgP work over an Etherchannel configured as LACP? or what's my options
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
Question is! Does dual active detection PAgP work over an Etherchannel configured as LACP? or what's my options
No, you can't use LACP for ePAGP detection.  One option is to break one of the stacks in your access layer and use the switch you want to use for dual active detection individually (not part of a stack) and uplink it to both 4500X switches. This way, you know that the single switch is used for ePAgP detection.

  • 2GB EtherChannel Cisco 3750x-Cisco 2960S

    Hello,
Im trying to setup an EtherChannel between my 3750 stack and my 2960S stack.
    I have 2 3750x in stack form. (2 switches).
    I have 4 2960s in stack form. (4 switches).

  • 2960-X uplink bugs

I have a site that has 2960-X stacks with a mixture of 15.0(2)EX3 and 15.0(2)EX4 IOS versions.  The stacks are of the 1G uplink variety and are connected to a 4510R+E via WS-X4612-SFP-E modules.  The uplinks are configured as LACP channels.  Since installation a couple of months ago the site has been experiencing random drops on several of the uplinks.  There are no error messages, just line protocol up/down messages.  When the interface drops it invariably comes back up 8 seconds later.
I found this reference under the "Resolved Caveats" in the 15.0(2)EX5 release notes:
    CSCum03574
Uplink ports in an EtherChannel on a Catalyst 2960X stack (running Cisco IOS Release 15.0(2)EX4) may go down randomly without error logs.
Thinking that this must be my issue, I upgraded a single stack to 15.0(2)EX5, but the problem remained.  So I checked the bug search tool hoping to get some more info.  Bug tool says that it is a duplicate of bug CSCul88801 which has this description:
    Symptom:
10G/1G on SW-c2960X does not link up after reload or OIR SFP
10G/1G SFP shows unknown in sh int status.
The cause may be the same, but the symptoms for these 2 bugs seem to be quite different.  In any case EX5 did not seem to fix my dropping uplink issue.  Has anyone else experienced this and if so, have you found a cure?
    Thanks,
    -Jeff

If you take a closer look to the Release Notes of this IOS trail (15.0(2)EX), you'll see that the workarounds for this issue is either "Reboot the Stack" or downgrade to EX3. But, if you downgrade, you'll come up with another issue, now with SSO. So, I'd recommend you to go along with Leo.
I'm also facing this, and on the next maintenance window (next week), I'll upgrade to 15.2(2)E and see how it behaves.
But, if you want to stick with EX trail, you can go to the Download section, on the Support tab of the main page of the Cisco's website. Then, choose your switch model and download the new IOS. For that to work, you have to have a CCO ID and the contract number (SmartNET or PSS) of your devices tied to your CCO ID.

  • Port channel from 2960 to Cisco Core 6513

I have a Cisco 6513 Core Switch, which is in a vtp domain and the core is the Server.  There are a number of other port channels going from the 6513 to other 2960 switch stacks.  The other switch stacks are in vtp client mode and are getting all vlans form the Server 6513 within this vtp domain.
I am trying to connect 2 - 2960S FPD L switches, which are connected together via flex module/flex cable.  I have 2 sfp's in the sfp ports on one of these switches and am creating one port channel of 20G(2 10G ports Te1/0/1 and Te1/0/2) going to two 10Gig ports on the Cisco 6513(Te9/7 and Te9/8) as a port channel created on the 6513 end.
I want to know first of all if it is possible to keep the 2960's in transparent mode and only allow 2 vlans to go to these 2 2960's.  I don't need all vlans on these switches, and the other 2960 stacks going to the 6513 do have all vlans and are in the vtp domain.  This one would only all vlans 4, and 20.
Can someone give me an example of the setup on each end to make this work?  I have tried and get a subnet mask error, so I must be going something wrong.  The vlans:  vlan 4: 10.35.3.0/22 and vlan 20 :  10.35.20.0/24 would be the only ones I would want to tag ports for on these 2 2960 switches in transparent mode.
Wanted to also setup a management interface for vlan 20 so I can remotely connect to 2960 stack.  It would be 10.35.20.30 for the int management IP.
    Thanks in advance
    Dave

Many Cisco switches support two methods of trunking - dot1q and ISL.  ISL is a Cisco-proprietary method of trunking.  The 2960's do not support ISL, so dot1q is on by default.  There's no need for the trunk encapsulation command.
When a frame is transferred over a trunk, dot1q trunking adds a tag to the frame so that the receiving switch knows which vlan the frame belongs to.  Your native vlan is a special vlan which does not have a tag applied.  Among other things, it's used for administrative traffic between the switches such as the messages the switches exchange to negotiate a port channel.  You can use one of your two vlans - vlan 4 or 20 - as your native vlan but it's recommended that you use a different vlan to segregate the traffic.  If you do not specify a native vlan, the switch will use vlan 1 as the native.  It's considered more secure to not use vlan 1 on your network, so it's recommend to have a different vlan explicitly configured as native.  If you're using vlan 1 as native through the rest of the network - if none of your other trunks have a native vlan explicitly configured - it doesn't do much good to change it on this one trunk.  You do not have to explicitly allow the native vlan on the trunk.  If you leave your native vlan as 1 and allow vlans 4 and 20 it will work fine.  You might want to do some research on the security implications and consider changing it through the whole network but that's a separate issue from getting this to work.
Port channel numbers are locally significant.  They don't have to match on opposite ends of the channel, they just have to be the same on each interface of a particular switch.  You can use either mode desirable or mode on.  It changes the way the switches set up the port channel a little bit but it doesn't change the way the channel operates.
