$2k doorstop

purchased this computer specifically for editing
videos.  Specs as follows:
i7-920, 12Gb, 300Gb, 9800gtx+ Optiarc AD-7190S
I have been trying for over a month and have yet to complete a burn with PRE8.  Updating the Nvidia drivers allowed me to begin the render process without a blue screen, but now the blue-screen is occuring when the burn to DVD begins.
(yes i have updated the firmware on the DVD as well. The DVD that i bought for the system did not have any updates, so i switched to a known good writer for testing.  Neither works.)
any suggestions?

Here is the latest in the quest for a burn . . .
I ran memtest again, this time i let it run for 10 passes 20+ hours.  No Errors.
Verified all the drivers are signed
verified CPU temps are remaining at or under 35c.  System temps are at or under 40c
Found that the video driver was giving errors -- removed and reinstalled the latest Nvidia download.
I also switched the sleep mode from S3 to S1 in the BIOS based on a recommendation from a technet article.
from this point on i tried a burn between each process.  Each ended in BSOD
Removed XPmode.
Removed recent MS updates.
Moved DVD to second SATA controller.
Tried a short burn  -- it was successful.
Tried a full DVD burn -- BSOD
I have also change the second SATA from normal to ACHI and back. -- neither worked.
Today i am trying a burn to a folder to eliminate the DVD as a source of problems.
There are some errors in the log inidicating that Win7 thinks that it did not get a clean power-cycle.  Happens nearly every boot.  Am trying to figure out if they have some significance.  I have turned off all sleep functions.
I have also disabled GPU rendering, background rendering and i think i have disabled "threaded processing."
I think my next step is a complete wipe and reinstall.  I would reinstall on a single drive (turn off the ACHI) without raid to see if the driver from Gigabyte is the issue.
Anyone have any alternate ideas?

  • Lenovo 3000 N200 0769. Soon-to-be-doorstop unless...

    Hello.
New forum member.  I joined because I have been passed a Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 by one of my good customers (I look after all their IT).  My notes indicate that this was purchased January 2008.
The problem does not seem unique.  It will not start at all.  Pressing the power button and releasing it results in the power ‘z’ light to illuminate for a few seconds.  That is all.  No hint of the screen illuminating, no fan noise, no other action at all.  No accessories attached.
No BIOS updates have been applied (he would not know how).  The user is not a fiddler.  This PC is a tool for his job and the company relies on my business to look after these (computer) tools, rather than have their executives fiddle about.
I have tried it with battery only, with battery and mains unit, with mains unit only.  Nothing.
I have searched this forum and spent too long reading threads.  The only conclusion I have is that this is not an unusual problem and that (Murphy’s Law) it happens shortly after a twelve month warranty period expires.  The nearest suggestion is motherboard failure. Forlornly I tried to check the warranty, to see if it was longer than 12 months.  On the Lenovo warranty lookup page it returned an error with ‘document not found’ message – hmm…
Happily the data is backed up, which means the user does what he's asked!  Hopefully the HDD is OK, which gives me a tiny fragment of value.
Does anyone have any ideas how to rectify this problem?  Thus far my experience of Lenovo has not impressed.  This could be my last experience of Lenovo.  If there is no meaningful response I just don’t know what my thoughts will be.
    Please will someone help me?
    Thank you

    Hello.
Thanks for the fast reply and the suggestion.
When I press the orange button it has the same result as when pressing power button: brief illumination of green 'z' light and nothing.
I had already seen the suggestion about resetting CMOS and tried that, although it said it was the CLRP1 spot, opposite the modem.  Is there another spot by the RAM?  I can't see anything.
I've also removed the RAM and HDD - still no luck.
Any other suggestions will be very welcome.
    Thank you again.

  • N97 - *Most Expensive Doorstop In My House*

All of a sudden 2 days ago whilst I was using the phone it started to become laggy (well, well...what a supriseLOL)..So naturally I opted to restart it...(BAD IDEA!)...It was then bricked... It would not start up..It was stuck on theNokia flash screen. A hard reset worked (after many attempts). The phone booted up (Sim card / Memory cardremoved) and I decided to reset phone to factory settigs to be on the safe side. After I thought my proble mwasresolved I put my SimCard in it..and Suprise Suprise...the phone was again bricked...
This has happend to me before and I did hard resets..Reinstalled firmware...Formatted Memory..None of this helped.
So I decided to take my phone today to a Nokia care point... He said the engineer would reinstall the firmware..I saidI'd tried many times but he said that they use a "STRONGER FIRMWARE" as opposed to ones that the public obtainusing a data cable.
    Is this true?
I also said if he can replace the lens. He said he does not know if the warranty covers the lens and that Nokia areaware of the issue. (He said he will get back to me).
I also said the GPS sucks (he laughed and nodded in agreement) and said a fix was soon to be released and Nokiais aware...
Other points which the engineer and I agreed upon was:-
    -**bleep** speakers (Compared to N95)
    -**bleep** & buggy software
    -**bleep** access points configs
    -**bleep** photo browser
    -**bleep** gps
    -**bleep** UI
    -**bleep** lagg
    -**bleep** battery life
    -**bleep** lens scratching issue
    -**bleep** transition effects
    -**bleep** speed of auto rotate
-**bleep** browser (it likes to crash often)
I'll update the post with other **bleep** stuff soon.
Look forward to reading your reply's

Hey guys. Thanks for all the replies. I have read all / if not most of the N97 threads on this forum as I browse this forum on a daily basis. Each one covers certain problems and it is frustrating to see so many Nokia users (loyal Nokia users for many years and newcomers) having problems that over the years (with Nokia developing so many phones) you would have thought would have been ironed out to some extent.
If I was launching a new phone I would first of all LISTEN to what customers want: -
    1. Speed. 2. Technological innovation (May be something new / revolutionary) 3. Stability
The above can be developed using technology already available (I.e. Hardware & OS's that competitors are using).
Nokia have not conducted there market research very well / at all. Did they ever pick up an Apple Iphone to see have 'fast' or 'stable' it is? If it is 'fast' & 'stable' is it down to the hardware (Processor / RAM etc) or the OS (Mac OS) ?
Thus why not include a faster processor or one that is on par with rivals which give some speed and power to the user. Simple isn't it?  Ok we all know that battery life comes into play but you can't sacrifice so much processing speed / lack of RAM just for an hour or two of battery power. Power users know that a handset of this calibre is a battery muncher and most people would charge it daily anyway.
Ok enough of my rant. Nokia cannot undo there shabby workmanship on this device but please for the companies sake take onboard user feedback for your next device! kthnxbye
metalfan:- I really hope that the method they use does make a difference and improves my user experience. Fingers crossed. Otherwise I will seriously have to consider breaking the phone and getting a replacement (N97 or other) via insurance.
alexeiw123: - you are right. Communication is key and a vital part when it comes to a new product. Departments need to learn to work together. Hardware dept should say "To make the OS snappy / fast / responsive and generally more stable why can't we add a nice, fast processor and more RAM into the equation?
The software dept should say "To take advantage of the nice new fast hardware that the hardware dept has graced us with how can we make the OS / software take 110% advantage of the neat hardware" etc. Surely a company of Nokia's strength can manage this!
fishfingers: - I feel your anger / frustration. I have spent hours and hours reinstalling apps / reinstalling firmware and reformatting mass memory. What a waste of time. BETA Testing is key! Why do game dev's beta test? To iron out bugs and save them hassle in the long run! The N97 seems to have been developed in the space of a week (if that) and released with no thought gone into the product. As you have mentioned so many people on this forum are knowledgeable (take radical24...at over 4000 posts he has helped many and should be considered to become a tester).
If Nokia listened to people and not just there workers, customers would not have to keep phoning Customer care / Visiting Nokia care points and thus in the long run it will save Nokia money! Simple.
     Just for the record:-
+The above are my views and not that of any other person / organisation.
+I know that Nokia employees sometimes browse this forum but none of the above is directed at them / to them but the members of this community forum.

  • Connection frustration - ready to make AEBS into doorstop

Here's my situation. I've been using an old UFO base station for a years. It's worked well. After upgrading to leopard, none of my leopard machines connected reliably. I thought maybe it was the base station, but I've read a lot about leopard having wireless issues. Yesterday it seemed to die altogether. I bought an AEBSn today. I used the out of the box configuration, I didn't try to tweak anything - and it worked for a few hours. I get home, and none of three leopard machines can connect wirelessly. If I ethernet in (like right now), it's fine, but my MBA doesn't even see the AEBSn and my wife's macbook sees it but endlessly can't connect. This is driving me nuts and really shaking my faith in apple. Anybody have any advice? I've tried setting it to N only, turned WPA on and off. Nothing seems to matter. I somehow doubt the AEBSn is broken, but who knows.

That is odd... It sounds like you have interference going on there. Do you live in a crowded neighborhood where there might be more devices using the same channel? Maybe one of them is overpowering your signal. The first thing that I would do is go in and change the channel of the router to see if that works.

  • Apple bluetooth mouse. From desktop to doorstop in one month.

I was prompted to change the batteries in my bluetooth wireless mouse, which I did. Now the mouse is recognized and paired but it will NOT move the pointer. It will click, but the pointer does not move. I've searched and found that others have had similar problems, but so far no solutions. Can anyone help me?

I am having this problem as well.
In my case I have MacBook Pro (Late 2011) and I am using Apple Keyboard and Apple Trackpad. They are running well for 15 minutes or so and then the trackpad is jumpy and keyboard is lagging. I have to restart the Bluetooth in my MBP so they are running well again. It is so annoying.
I am using the latest version of Yosemite.
    Please fix this.

  • WRT54GS -- doorstop now?

    Hi all,
I have a WRT54GS v1.0 that has served me well for 2.5 years. Just a few days ago after a power outage, I noticed the power LED started blinking (rather than staying solid) and I lost internet connectivity. I now can no longer get a DHCP lease from my cable headend (Comcast). I can connect to the router on the LAN side. Also, eliminating the Linksys and plugging my cable modem directly into my PC allows me to connect fine. Re-flashing the BIOS doesn't help. Has my unit gone to that electronic scrap-heap in the sky?Message Edited by sydbarrett74 on 12-05-200608:02 PM

Actually there is a thread on sveasoft.com about resuscitating a 'bricked' Linksys and it worked for me. Now all is right with the world again.

how do you power down a 4s that wont shut down be holding the button. I tried to "update" and it stoped and said that it could not update. Then, Itunes said that the phone needs to be restored. It now has the apple logo on the screen, it wont power down and will not respond to itune. THIS IS INCREDEBLY FRUSTRATING on monday morning!

  • HP Officejet Pro L7580- here's a new one for HP Mac Architect

So like all the other disgruntled HP users who foolishly installed 10.5 when it was released, I have been without a scanner ever since. Until three days ago, however, I've been able to print, as the driver for the L7580 was included in Leopard. Now, whenever I try to print a document, the print queue opens and the job says "stopped", which, incidentally, is the same thing that happens when I send a print job to my other once-was-a-printer-now-just-a-giant-waste-of-space, the Canon LBP5000. I've racked my brain trying to think if I've done something to trigger this, pestered the HP call in support center, installed, uninstalled and installed the printer again, restarted, replaced the USB cable- anything I can think of. Nothing works. I run a small business and while it's been a huge inconvenience to lose my not so inexpensive scanner, I've made due with an old one waiting for HP to get their act together and release software that actually works with 10.5. Needless to say, I cannot work without a printer. Am I going to have to go back to Tiger now? Spend untold thousands of dollars on a printer that probably won't work with leopard anyway? Can anyone advise? HP Mac Architect?

Try this for a Quick Fix ...........
After reading other forum comments from people having the same problem with the yellow cartridge popping-out, combined with others who have realised that HP have no interest in compensating anyone for this rediculous example of, at best, 'bad design', or at worst 'blatent planned obsolescence', I have created a 'quick fix' that may add another 1, 2 or more years of life to the HP Officejet Pro L7580 Printer.
This is not the elegant technical solution I was hoping for.  However, in hindsight, it may prove to be a more reliable solution than replacing the faulty part that is actually causing the problem.  So, here it is the Quick Fix ........
I found a wooden triangular door stop that I cut to size that fitted exactly in the space between the plastic door and the offending yellow cartridge. To hold it in place, I wrapped the doorstop with 2" cellotape, then I stuck the door stop to the inside of the plastic door with double sided cellotape (double sided stick-on foam would also work well). With the doorstop in the correct place, the plastic door closed perfectly and was snug enough to apply sufficent pressure to the offending yellow cartridge, and hence stopping it from popping out again.  To make sure the plastic door does not 'fly open' with the pressure of the yellow cartridge (when it wants to pop out!), I applied another piece of 2" cellotape around the outside of the door, holding it to the body of the photocopier.
This exercise only took 10-15 mins to do.  I feel this is a much better option than spending another $300+ on a new All-in-One  system, as well as being a good environmental solution.  If this is DELIBERATE 'planned obsolescence', companies like HP need to be more accountable for, at best, 'sloppy design'.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

  • How hard would it be to go back to Tiger?

I just can't live with Leopard anymore. Since I installed it, I have daily and repeated crashes of Safari, random things like Calculator don't work, and now, my battery will not charge, essentially turning my laptop into a desktop. I had none of these issues before I upgraded. The battery one seems to be a result of 10.5.1. (Yes, I have checked the adapter. My adapter will charge the SO's identical, but non-Leopard PowerBook, but his will not charge mine) I'm just tired of the frustration. I've been a Mac fangirl for 16 years, but this is enough to make me want to leave.
So, I'm thinking about trying to go back to Tiger. Has anyone done this? Was it successful in making your Mac useful again for something other than being a doorstop? How big a pain in the rear was it? I'm kind of afraid to see what new features 10.5.2 will unleash on my poor PB.
    Thanks!

Well, you can try starting another discussion with one or more of your specific problems with Leopard and see if someone can help you with them.
Apple recommends doing an erase and install for downgrading to a previous version of OS X. In your case, you'll have to use a Tiger install disk to do an erase and install. Note: This will erase everything from your drive. You'll have to backup any important data first.

  • Mac Mini and 17" Studio Display CRT (ADC)

Is there someone who can tell me if there is a DVI to ADC Adapter to get a Mac Mini to work with the beautiful 17" Studio Display CRT (ADC). Which is an anolog monitor, the adapters i can find work only on LCD (digital) screens.
    Please let me know...
    Ger

Do NOT buy the Apple DVI to ADC adapter, it does not work with CRT displays.
The 'geniuses' at the Apple store recommended that I buy this adapter. It didn't work. I have since found out (after extensively surfing the web) that I am not the only one who has been recommended to buy this adapter by an Apple 'genius'. However, It is simply not designed to work with the CRT's, it is LCD only.
There is no way to make the ADC 17" CRT studio display work with new non ADC Apple hardware. Apple have simply dismissed it, much to the annoyance of all the customers who had purchased this perfectly respectable display.
If you want to use your Mac Mini you will need to use either a non-Apple display or one of their new displays. Your perfectly functioning CRT is now a doorstop.

  • Database startup after reboot of RAC server

    Hello,

IMO : (i am not a great oracle dba, because i have not enough time to spend with, and my collegue need really simple think to do, like startup/shutdown a database, no more investigation)Why startup/shutdown a database? I have databases that work 24x7 and uptimes of over a year. The record so far, has been over 24 months uptime (1st downtime were caused by a powerfailure to the rack cabinet). And for a database instance that runs a number of processes and deals with 100's to 1000's of inserts per second.
it's easier to view that an oracle process take more cpu and so investigate in that database what's appens. Rather than search in my v$sql table to find witch schema doing wrong thinksNot sure what you are trying to say here. Single or multiple database instances do not change how a session looks like, or how SQLs are executed.. and thus not how you troubleshoot problems. Nor does it change resource requirements, or how you address these. But multiple instances do impact resource availability and requires one to split resources amongst instances - the end result of this is less flexibility.
It's easier to affect cpu ressource to a process, rather than configuring it in oraclePlease explain.
It's easier to stop a database rather than "put offline a schema"This is a "silly" statement to make IMO. Why do you want to offline a schema? Availability of applications and data are a critical feature in today's information system landscape. So why argue the complete opposite and say it is now more complex to make something less available?
By the same token, why do you want to offline a database? A down database is even less useful than a downed server - at least you can use the downed server as a doorstop.. ;-)
And if a database crash it only affect one application.Yeah.. and these happens when? Every few minutes? Every hour? Once a day?
This is not a valid argument. Oracle instances very seldom crashes just for the heck of it. Most often it is due to incorrect o/s configuration, problematic hardware, uncertified components, old drivers, etc. Or plain old application abuse of Oracle.
There is the theorical approach and practical one : I'm not alone is that case :
    http://oracledoug.com/serendipity/index.php?/archives/1339-The-Reality-Gap-3-A-Single-Instance-per-Server.html
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/art_dbazine_server_consolidation.htm
I have never done RDBMS as a theoretical thing. The most dynamic table (ito SQLs against it) I have, grows by more than 450 million rows per day. This is as real world as real world gets. And that is what shapes my experience and opinion. And Burleson and I have never seen eye to eye on a number of subjects - so quoting his views on consolidation does little to persuade me to change my opinion.
have you any ideas where can i found an error message that explain why my database doesn't start ? (like not enough ressource ;-) )Troubleshooting a problem starts with a very basic principle - isolation. Isolate the layer or moving part where the problem occurs. As the other instances are running, it means that the CRS software layer is up and running, that the storage layer is up and running and so on. So the problem should be with the instance that for some reason refuses to start? Confirm this by using sqlplus to start a down instance and looking at what its alert log file says. It should have some kind of pointer to what dependency that has not been met.

  • Time machine running slow and slowing network access

I have had and continue to have issues with wifi on my MBP.  Those are pretty well summarized in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5535320?start=30&tstart=0.  I've been able to make mt system usable with some of the less dodgy workarounds in that thread ( like keeping a ping on my router running )
That thread really doesn't mention the issues I've been having with time machine though, so I thought I'd bring this up here.  Whenever time machine starts up, Safari and mail become unresponsive.  It's worst when TM is "preparing" of "cleaningup", though barely usable during the actual backup.  Mostly, I can work around that too, but occationally, TM will find GB of data to be backed up and lock up my mac for a day.  Here's a recent example:

This is on an AC router.  My peak throughput shows 19 Mb/s on menu meters, so, not great, but not this slow.  Mostly, the network activity is nothing with short bursts of higher throughput.
I'm hoping this will be addressed in 10.9.2.  In the mean time, are there any workarounds to get past this issue short of turning off TM?
    Thanks,
    Horst

These instructions were taken from Mac OS X Hints at:

The Unix program dd is a disk copying util that you can use at the command line in order to make a disk image. It makes a bit-by-bit copy of the drive it's copying, caring nothing about filesystem type, files, or anything else. It's a great way to workaround the need for Norton Ghost.
Normally, in order to make a disk image, the disk you're copying from has to be able to spin up and talk -- in other words, it's OK to make a copy if the disk is healthy. But what happens when your disk is becoming a doorstop? As long as it continues to spin, even with physical damage on the drive, dd and Mac OS X will get you out of the fire.
We had a situation recently where a friend sent a disk to us that had hard physical errors on it. It would boot in Windows, but then it would hit one of these scratch marks and just die. We fired up dd, and it started OK, but stopped at the same physical error location -- complaining about a Hard Error.
So the workaround was to designate the dd mode as noerror -- which just slides over the hard stops, and to add the mode sync, which fills the image with nulls at that point. We did it on BSD Unix, but as long as you can get the hard drive attached to your Mac, the command is the same:
    dd bs=512 if=/dev/rXX# of=/some_dir/foo.dmg conv=noerror,sync
The bs=512 designates block size, and the if=/dev/rXX# is the UNIX path to the actual disk device. Make sure that the chosen directory (some_dir) has enough room to take the entire disk image -- which will be equal to the size of the drive. Since dd doesn't care about the contents of the drive, it copies every bit on the thing, so you get an image equal to the disk's capacity. A really big file. One workaround is to put it on a RAID array.
Once you've established the disk image (in this example, foo.dmg), you're almost home. Here's where your Mac OS X box is far and away the best thing to have. In this example, the dd output file is foo.dmg. You have to realize that this is an exact copy of a busted drive, but the "holes" are filled with nulls. As long as the damage isn't to the boot sector, though, when you double-click on it, Mac OS X mounts it without breathing hard ... who cares if it's FAT32, NTFS, whatever.
Due to the size of the image that we were copying, we put it on a RAID array, and had to access the image over the network -- it still mounted fine. In straight UNIX, if you try to mount a disk image, it complains that there is "no block device" and fails. Once your image is mounted, it appears in your Finder, and then it's easy work to retrieve the critical files from the image -- usually things like .doc files and .xls files and the lot.
Finally, since your disk is actually dying, once you have your image, you can drop it to tape or something and you've not only recovered your files, you've made a viable backup as well. Once again, that which destroys a Windows box becomes a play thing to a Mac OS X box.

  • How do I get Apple TV home sharing to work again?

    Hi,
I'm using an iMac, I have Apple TV 2, a Bt home hub 3, between 30-50mb speed over wifi (160mb when my mac is wired). I have followed all the set up instructions, up to date software, firewall etc. On the Apple TV I can watch a movie through it's iTunes no problem, BUT when I try via home sharing it works for a few minutes then tells me to connect to the network, then connects again a few seconds later, then I try again and it does the same thing despite every other wifi device working fine ( humax, ps3, wii). Until about 4/5 months ago it worked perfectly with exactly the same hardware, so surely it can only be the updates? Is there a solution out there or do I have to wait until Apple pull their bloody finger out and fix it properly? The main reason for having Apple TV was the home sharing, so now this is just an expensive doorstop.
    Any help would be great
    Thanks

Have you tried a PRAM reset?

If you look in the audio output port, is there a red light showing.  If so, the internal switch is stuck..  Insert the headphones a few times, jiggle a toothpick inside or shot some compressed air to trip the switch.  If no success, have the Apple store genius bar technician do it.
    Ciao.

  • Screen sharing and file sharing not working on LAN

This is not a Mavericks specific problem since it existed before I upgraded to Mavericks.  I have a LAN that consists of 3 MBPs and 1 MacPro.
Local screen sharing and file sharing works fine on all of these computers except for one MBP.  From this MBP I am able to connect to all of the other computers for screen sharing and file sharing.  But I can't connect to this particular MBP for screen sharing or file sharing from any of the other Macs.
This MBP shows up in the left hand side column under "Shared" on all the other computers.  But I am unable to make a connection from any computer to the problematic MBP.  I get the message, "There was a problem connecting to the server "xxxxxxxx".  The server may not exist or is unavailable at this time".
I have tried toggling off and on screen sharing and file sharing with no effect.  One probably pertinent strange thing that I notice is that under the Screen Sharing set up the green button next to "Screen Sharing:On" is green.  But the message under it states:
"Other users can access your computer's screen
at vnc://johnmacbookproretina/ or by looking for “John MacBook Pro” in the Finder sidebar."
The problem is that my computer name is "John MacBook Pro" and the LocalHostName is "JohnMBPr.local".  I believe that at some point in the past the computer name and/or LocalHostName was "johnmacbookproretina".
Similiarly, under File Sharing I am informed:
"Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at “afp://johnmacbookproretina” or “smb://johnmacbookproretina”."
I would appreciate any help I could get to resolve this perplexing issue.  Thanks.
    John

I've finally been able to solve my own problem.
File sharing and screen sharing on the problematic MBP was being blocked by firewall rules that had been set up several weeks ago when I had installed a trial version of DoorStop X firewall software.  I had previously trashed the app when the 30 day trial ended.  I did not realize that the software had left a set of firewall rules in the Library/StartupItems folder.  Among other things, the rules were set to deny access to the computer on the ports used for file sharing and screen sharing.  Once I trashed the DoorStopStartup folder in the StartUpItems folder all the connection problems resolved with a computer restart.

  • Ibook g3 OSX 10.2.8 was upgraded to 10.4 but screen went black, sound fine.  How do I revert to 10.2.8 with blank screen?

So here's what happened.  The Apple Store Geniuses generously upgraded my ibook g3 with OSX 10.2.8 to OSX 10.4 via USB port since my CD drive no longer works.  But the screen suddenly went black, sound was fine.  Genius was stumped, but when I restarted later I very briefly got an initial screen plus the music that accompanies an initial OS installation before screen went black again.  I really think that OSX 10.4 was more than my ibook g3 could handle.  I don't recall the specifications anymore and can't check them with a black screen, but capacity was fairly limited.  I went back to Apple a few weeks ago to ask them to downgrade my poor ibook g3 to OSX 10.3 which seems more likely to work with my computer's specifications, but was informed that OSX 10.3 is no longer available for them to load via USB.  Today it occured to me that OSX 10.2.8 is still somewhere on my ibook, and if there's some shortcut I can use to restart under 10.2 instead of 10.4, some switch of OS I can make while blind (since the screen is currently dark), I could at least still use the ibook using the old 10.2 OS.  Is there a way to do this switch in OSX while essentially blind?  If not, my ibook is basically a doorstop I originally spent over $600 on 10 years ago.  I really can't afford to just run out an buy new computers as I am disabled and dying a slow painful death from Lyme disease, but can't afford medication to treat my own illness, let alone buy another computer every 5 years.  Please help!

    Hello,
Ok let's see what we can do here.
First thing to try is resetting the PMU. Http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431 it may make no difference but its good practice to do so.
So times it can resolve faults. You say they installed Mac OS X 10.4. Did they setup a user a count and did you see the desktop? Did they simply hand it back to you when the installed failed with a blank screen?
The truth is, in order for you to restore your iBook your going to need the system restore disk. With a broken CD drive this has limitations as you have no real means to install.
The only option would be to use target disk mode on an external drive, but being an early G3 iBook I'm not sure if target disk mode will work. I am going to assume the shop used this method to install via USB.
What would be a good solution is to fit a replacement CD drive. They are often cheap enough to buy and relatively easy to fit on a white duel USB model. Replacement CD drives can be brought from eBay at very little money.
An online guide can help you fit one with the right screwdrivers.
With a replacement drive, you will be open to better options for installing or even using an apple hardware test disk to diagnose any faults with the screen.
Suprised you was left in such a situation by the shop.
