2nd Hard Drive Failure in 5 months

There seems to be several complaints about the mini hard drive failures and I have experienced 2 in my 5 month old mac.
Anyone have any idea what is going on with these drive?

Patrick, while you seemed to dismiss the comments that Doug made previously, I think he's basically right - that there is no indication here (which after all is where sick Mac minis are most discussed) or in other Mac-centric forums that would indicate there is a problem with mini hard drives above and beyond the nature of normal manufacturing failure rates.
It seems to me, particularly in relation to you latest post, that it may well not be a hard drive issue you are suffering here at all, but something of a more systemic nature, where the symptom is a hard drive fault, but the problem lies elsewhere. If that were true, replacing the hard drive would not resolve the problem of course.
In my view, Apple need to examine your system in detail and test it thoroughly - particularly while it's under warranty. While it's possible that you've had two faulty drives and that a third may be fine, it's also possible that you'll end up with a series of drives that all go bad until the mini is not longer covered by warranty and you're left on your own with it.

  • Multiple Hard Drive Failures in 2 months on 2 MacBook Pros

    I have a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro with a 320GB hard drive. In early Feb. the hard drive failed suddenly and would no longer mount. My Apple Store replaced it and I restored from a Time Machine backup. A week later the hard drive failed again. It was again replaced, and they order a completely new machine. On the second restore I did not restore from Time Machine but rather moved the files I wanted, iTunes, iPhoto, documents, as to not bring along bad system files. The new computer came in and I set it up as a new machine and transferred files from the old Time Machine but did not do a full restore. I then erased Time Machine and ran a fresh backup. Two weeks later the hard drive on the new machine failed. It locked up so I powered down and upon restart got the file folder with a question mark and the hard drive was nowhere to be found. The Apple Store kindly replaced my hard drive for the third time, the second hard drive in a two week old computer. The asked me to not move any files from Time Machine for a couple of weeks.
    I now have my fourth hard drive in 2 months and I do not want a fifth. In fact, the first computer may have failed three times. At this point I don't remember. The Geniuses at the Apple Store are stumped so I'd appreciate any input. What the heck is going on here?
    My theories
    1. Simple bad luck
    2. A file in iTunes, iPhoto or an Office, iWork, pdf...... is causing the failures
    3. Restoring Office from Time Machine is killing it.
    4. I'm doing something to cause physical damage. I've never dropped it and I handle it fairly carefully and in the same way I've handled every other Mac laptop I've had in the past 10 years.
    5. Moving the computer immediately after closing the lid to sleep. I've been told that the disk doesn't stop spinning until the sleep light pulses and moving it around too much too soon can cause damage. I've been doing this every laptop I've had and in the past much more aggressively as a grad student hurrying out of class rooms.
    6. My most recent idea, not having the Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible button checked in System Prefs. I unchecked it for better performance but maybe this is causing the hard drive to never lock when sleeping so when I move it around the heads bang on the disks.?
    7. Something environmental. Using it on my lap? Setting it on the couch or ottoman while running? A power surge?

    Dunno about your hard drive issue.
    However, everything you list in number seven are definite no-no's. All of them, except power surge, will cause heat related problems.

  • Hard Drive failure after 5 months what can i do?

    the laptop is 5 months old and the hdd has died on me i was able to recover some of the files on it but everything else including the windows 7 restore image were lost. what can i do about this? do i contact the hdd manufacturer? i tried callin lenovo and was told id be called back by the tech support and 2 weeks later ive still no call so lenovo clearly dont care about it but i still have a laptop without a hdd now. i know i can get a new 1 but i shouldnt really have to because a hdd shouldnt fail after 5 months.
    just for the record im 100% sure its the hard drive thats failed as i used ubuntu from the cd and found the hdd was in a critical state according to the disk check in ubuntu

    ive rang a load of different numbers that ive found on the site for support half of them dont work and when i finally got through to someone they said i had the wrong number they gave me a new number to call which also didnt work. when i say didnt work i get a voice which i thing is from the phone providor that i have telling me this number is not in service. i have also left an online query thing which i got called back about and was told i would be called back later its now 2 weeks later and ive no reply.
    i live in ireland i have a g550. what do i need to do to contact support as my laptop is broken after 5 months

  • Third hard drive failure in 18 months -- argh!

    I just got the clicking noise, spinning beach ball, won't-boot-up crash of doom on my white MacBook for the third time. I bought it in December 2007. It crashed once in July 2007, replaced the hard drive. Crashed again in October of 2007, replaced the hard drive again. It was fine all year until just now.
    I disabled Safe Sleep after the last time this happened and I never put the machine down when the white light is still on. My boyfriend makes fun of me for treating the thing with kid gloves. This time it died while sitting quietly on the counter.
    I have Applecare and Time Machine backups and an appointment at 8:45 tomorrow at the Genius Bar, so that's not the issue. I hate to pull the old "lemon" card, but does three hard drive crashes on the same machine mean lemon? Ugh!

  • Multiple Hard Drive Failures

    I purchased a MacBook Pro just before last Christmas and in late January or early February the hard drive failed and had to be replaced. I was told then that it was a fluke and not to worry about it that the chances of it happening again were very slim. Well, yesterday it happened once again.
    That is now 2 hard drive failures within 4 months of each other, and within 6 months of being purchased new. This is simply unacceptable for a computer that costs nearly $3,000 with an extended warranty.
    Until Macintosh figures out this problem, I would advise everyone to stay away from the MacBook Pro. From what I was told by the "Genius" at the Apple Store yesterday when I was having the hard drive replaced once again, "Apple knows about this problem". Well, they may know about it, but apparently they are not doing anything about it because the problem still exists.
    I guess they assume its cheaper to just keep replacing hard drives every 2 or 3 months than to fix the problem and have a satisfied customer.
    WARNING - Do not buy the MacBook Pro unless you do not mind spending several days reloading your software and files onto a new hard drive every 2 or 3 months.

    Even with a backup, that does not reinstall all of the software onto the new hard drive, only the personal files and data. I have over $15,000 worth of software that I have to painstakingly reinstall each time this happens.
    You are mistaken. If you've backed up by cloning the entire hard drive, everything on it is backed up and can simply be cloned onto a new hard drive. Nothing at all needs to be reinstalled from any other source. If you clone to a portable hard drive, you can take it with you on location. If your primary drive fails there, you'll be able to boot to your portable drive exactly as if it were the internal drive, and keep right on working without missing a beat. A 250GB Seagate FreeAgent To Go portable USB2 drive containing a clone of my MBP's internal drive goes everywhere I go, and is ready to step into the place of my internal drive in moments if ever it should go pear-shaped.
    Believe me, I am not making this up, and there is no Catch-22. This is what cloning software is for, and it works beautifully. You may have good uses for other kinds of backups too, but a bootable clone of your primary internal hard drive would be invaluable to you as an additional protection against lost time and work in the field.

    I've used both, and I prefer SuperDuper. It's simplicity itself to use, and costs under $30. Carbon Copy Cloner is free, offers more selective-copying options, and in the versions I've used, it presented more inscrutable messages that I didn't know how to interpret, leaving me wondering what had and hadn't happened. I'm told those rough edges have been polished off in recent versions, but I haven't tried them. SuperDuper works very, very well for me and never leaves me puzzled.

    From what you describe it's certainly a Hard Drive failure so you'll definetely need to contact HP.  Personally, considering this is the 2nd HDD in under 2 months, I say it's either bad luck ( however unlikely ) or there is another issue at play - it may be worth suggesting this to HP when you contact them.

    can i return my laptop to the store for a replacement.. it is less than 5 months old and i am getting an imminent hard drive failure message. totally unacceptable

    HP will replace the hard drive under warranty. Not too many stores will permit a return after 5 mos. We can also assist with a hard drive replacement.

  • Data Recovery After Hard Drive Failure!

    Ok, basically, I've got a 2 1/2 year old iBook G4 with a bombed hard drive, and unfortunately, the last time I backed up was around 3 months ago. Here's what happened right before the crash: some applications like Widgets and Safari were acting fluky, and it wouldn't let me open Word documents, so I restarted, because I thought it might have something to do with the fact that i had downloaded the new version of itunes not that long ago and hadn't restarted since. well, when i restarted, the gray screen with the wheel and the apple symbol went on for a really long time, and then the blue screen came up with the cursor, but nothing else happened, and the blue screen just stayed there. as far as i know, the hard drive wasn't making any unusual noises, just the usual occasional soft sounds that my hard drive has always made (there are usual sounds, right?) a piece of information that might be useful is that the hard drive was almost full (it only had about 5 GB left, which i understand is how much you should leave) could this have caused the failure maybe? anyway, i tried using the hard drive as a target and tried getting another computer to recognize it and pull the files off, but that didn't work. so, i brought it into the apple store, and they got it to boot up but using some external hard drive, i think. they tried disk utility, but that didn't see my hard drive. then the tried disk warrior, and that saw it and repaired it or something, but then it couldn't get the drive to mount. so, i'm assuming that because disk warrior didn't work and couldn't get it to mount, then other software like data rescue, etc... won't either. like all computer users, i've got some REALLY REALLY important data on there, and all the data recovery places i've gotten quotes from are pretty pricey. if the drive doesn't require physical data recovery, only non-physical, as i hope, the cheapest is still $350. even so, the person on the phone there didn't seem to know nearly as much as the people at the more pricier places. so, are there any other options besides expensive data recovery? i read something about using dd - a unix thing, but i don't know the first thing about it (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382) so i'm not sure i want to risk messing it up even more. and, if worse comes to worst, then i'll use a data recovery place... but can anyone tell me if they've used any of the data recovery companies below, and which ones are good?

    I have read good reports concerning Data Rescue although I have not used it myself.
    Once you get your data back, focus on a regular (even daily) backup routine, because as you know only so well, the question is not if a drive will fail, it's when.

  • Having hard drive failure every year

    Trying to find out why the hard drives on our computer HP TouchSmart 310-1124F keeps failing.  Purchased this computer new in 2011, in February of 2012 the hard drive failed, message was "Hard desk failure is imminent have it replaced" so I did.  Now in 2013 I'm getting another message " we strongly recommend that you back up your computer to avoid potential data loss ... contact your computer manufacturer to determine if the disk with errors needs to be repaired or replaced."  The computer is attached to a good battery backup, it's not used for extended Internet work, No new programs have been downloaded, it is not used to download or upload information and although it's not our main computer it is used daily.  What is going on, is anyone having same issues.  I feel the computer itself is a lemon.  This will be the 3rd hard drive in 2 years on this machine!  By- the- way I did contact the Tech. department telling them the error message but was only told this computer was "not in warranty now" and that ... "you'll need to purchase a new hard drive"  No offer or indication as to a possible repair could be done. Yeah that dosen't make me feel that great about this product.  I just want to find out why the hard drives installed on this machine only last one (1) year! Any advise would be appreciated, thank you.

    Your computer may not / most likely doesn't have anything to do with the hard drive failures you have experienced. Drive manufacturers have been reducing the warranty period on drives for years. Also, as drive density has gone up, it appears that quality control has gone down.
    Was the first drive replaced under warranty by HP or did you do it yourself??? Have you kept the computer free of "dust bunnies"??? What is the average temperature where you live???
    By the way, the "we strongly recommend that you back up your computer to avoid potential data loss ... contact your computer manufacturer to determine if the disk with errors needs to be repaired or replaced" message was primarily just for your information. Because the warranty has expired, HP will no longer repair the machine without you incurring additional costs.
    Your best bet is to;
    1)  Follow the advice of the message above and back-up any and all data you wish to save before the computer encounters a major hard drive issue.
    2)  Run the hard drive diagnostics from the boot menu or DOWNLOAD and run the HP Vision Hardware Diagnostics CD Image.
    3)  Also consider downloading and running the hard drive manufacturuer's diagnostics routine and see if it generates an error code. If the drive is still under warranty and you receive an error code, contact the manufacturer for an RMA.
    4)  When replacing the drive make sure to blow all the dust out of the computer and continue this practice about every three months.

  • Multiple Hard Drive Failures on Macbook Pro 15inch (late 2008)

    So I just lost my THIRD hard drive since July on my refurbished Macbook Pro. I was told when the first one failed it was just bad luck. That hard drives fail once in a while. Then in December when the 2nd one died I was told there was no way there was a connection but they would run test on the macbook Pro. Both times I told the genius workers that my Macbook pro runs very very hot at random times (not all the time and I have not had it happen at an Apple store) and that I have many friends with Macs and I have never had a friend macbook get as hot as mine but both times I was told that my macbook could not be getting too hot it would shut off if it got too hot. The 2nd time I was told all the test came back normal and it was just bad luck the 2nd hard drive failed. SO.....
    Anyways so yesterday my hard drive is failing again!!!! Third time! since July!!!
    So my question anyone else having this problem?
    I am sure that there is a problem with the macbook pro that is leading these failures-- but I cannot get an apple genius to believe me. I personally think it is time for Apple to replace my macbook pro if they cannot fully determine the underlying problem. Anyone have these issues?
    I am headed to an apple store tomorrow but it is a 2.5 hour drive (one way) for me and this gets really really old each time I lose a hard drive!!

    A drive can be so badly corrupted that it doesn't work, but be resurrected through repartitioning and reformatting etc, TravisPaul.
    On some occasions, too, I can imagine an over-pressured service department deciding to simply replace a drive rather than go to the trouble of thoroughly troubleshooting it and "not being able" to recover data from it for much the same reasons! It takes less time, though there is no evidence that this is what has happened here, of course, and I wouldn't expect it to occur in an Apple Retail Store.
    The symptoms you report could just as readily involve corruption as failure. Doesn't sound like lack of free space was an issue. Did you attempt any repair processes yourself before taking them in (repairing the disk with Disk Utility or a Safe Boot, checking SMART status, reformatting the drives and re-installing your OS etc?) If three drives have really failed there is either another , undiagnosed, problem or you have been extremely unlucky, but probability being what it is, given the number of these computers in circulation, I guess it must happen every once in a while. Heck, a person I know lost their house in the Australian bushfires last year and then got caught up in the Peruvian mudslides while on a holiday trying to forget about the house! Even lightning really does strike more than once in the same spot occasionally.

  • Time Capsule hard drive failure

    Hello, all
    I have a 500 GB Time Capsule that is about four years old. I use it to back up my MacBook Air and I also use it for file storage. Recently the HD has become erratic, in that it appears on Finder under Shared sometimes but not always. The wireless router part is still working fine. I can usually get the HD to reappear but it disappears again eventually. I can get it back by unplugging and replugging the TC, but I tried a hard reset and that didn't bring it back. I have backed up all the files I had stored on there as advised by the Apple Store Genius (see next paragraph).
    I took it to the Apple Store and the Genius said that he thinks it is failing. He was not able to see the TC/HD wirelessly but was able to access it by plugging in a cable. He expressed surprise that my TC has lasted four years!!! He said I should replace it.
    I then went to the online Apple Store and read the TC reviews, which contained quite a few reviews that report HD failure (mostly power failure, if I'm not mistaken) after 18 months or so! Some suggested that a good solution would be to get an Airport Extreme plus a USB hard drive of some other brand, not Apple. Many of these report power failure, which is not my problem. I still have power; apparently hard drive failure.
    This sounded like a good idea, so today I went to London Drugs in Vancouver (an Apple retailer) and the salesman there (should be fairly unbiased) thought I should get a new TC rather than the two-piece solution just because it was simpler. He also said that in fact there about three HD manufacturers who produce all hard drives and that any one would have about the same frequency of failure, Apple include because they don't manufacture their own.
    So I'm ready to replace my old TC with the new one I bought, but I'd like to get any suggestions the community might have. I can see the advantage of the TC because it's an all-in-one. I haven't opened it yet, so I'll await your well-informed input.

    I think the TC is a much better buy.. If only for this reason.. the USB hard disk on the AEBS is dog slow.. whereas the TC internal drive is at least same as standard single disk NAS.. overall for what you get the price of a 2TB TC vs the 2TB USB disk plus AEBS is about right.. the 3TB TC is much poorer value.

    It is fairly well done, but not everything is correct.. the stuff about the fan turning on is wrong.. it has the same issue as the old one. That is overheating, no ventilation and the fan does not turn on, has no outside vent anyway.
    But look at the internal vs usb speed of hdd.. that should convince you of the value of the TC.. if you are using anything but wireless.
    BTW the issue with the Gen 1 is still more likely to be the power supply.. The original 500GB hard disk was a Seagate Server ES drive.. the only server standard drive in the whole TC series although it was always promoted as having server standard drives..
    IMHO a repair of the power supply would get it up and running again. Very extermely unlikely that drive will die in such a manner.. even if it was to go bad they  tend to stay bad.. not come on again when you power cycle.. but power supplies sure do.
    I have repaired dozens of them.. haven't ever come across a dead 500GB drive yet.. seen a few 1TB, both WD and noisy hitachi.. but even so not that many..

    At least you can pull open the TC and remove the hard disk and wipe it.
    Interesting the Apple guys are surprised at the 4year life span.. obviously intended for you to buy a new one much sooner than that.

  • Hard drive failure - options for data recovery and AppleCare coverage

    I have been handed a relative's 12 month old MacBook Pro with a factory-installed 500GB hard drive which appears to have failed. When attempting to boot the MacBook I am met with the classic clicking and grating noise which I know is a tell-tale sign of hard drive failure. The drive will not boot and I am shown the question mark folder icon, indicating that the operating system cannot be found. Have booted into internet recovery mode, Disk Utility appears to have found no sign of the hard drive's existence and shows none of its partitions. I have attempted putting the MacBook into FW target-mode and mounting the disk from another laptop, but to no avail; while it will go into target mode the drive simply isn't visible. The SATA connection to the drive is definitely OK - I have tested with another 2.5 inch hard drive which showed up fine in Disk Utility and was bootable. Have run Apple Hardware Test/Diagnostics but this returned no errors. It seems like a pretty clear cut case of drive failure.
    I put this all to the relative whose laptop this is and asked them whether the MacBook had been dropped recently, explaining to them that this is one of the likeliest causes for such sudden failure. Sheepishly they admitted that they had indeed dropped it, although not from too great a distance and onto a carpeted floor. Apparently in the days immediately after the shock the hard drive continued to boot but the system was very slow and beset by spinning beech ball hangups. It is only in the last few days that the hard drive has become completely unbootable, and seemingly unreachable.
    I have two questions that I would be grateful for some help with.
    Firstly, is there any possibility of recovering data from this drive without going to a data recovery specialist? The user did have backups of most important data, but some recently imported photos were not backed up. Is it any use me trying any third-party data recovery software utilities, bearing in mind that I can't even mount the drive in target mode?
    Second, the MacBook is still covered by the extended AppleCare warranty for the next two years. Is it worth my relative's while making a Genius Bar appointment to see whether Apple would replace this drive for free, given that the damage was most likely user-inflicted? Is there any chance that this sudden failure could be unrelated to the drop the MacBook suffered the other day - perhaps just a result of the 'normal' failure rate? I am more than happy to exchange the drive for a new one myself and my relative is happy to pay for the new part (I was amazed at how cheap hard drives are now), but would we be better off trying an Apple Store? My prediction would be that while we might get lucky and have an obliging genius who agrees to swap the drive without asking too many questions, we could also have one who concludes the damage is not covered by the warranty and insists on charging for the new hard drive (at a mark-up I assume) and labour.
    Any thoughts about these two issues or the hard drive failure more generally are very welcome. Thanks.

    1, Data recovery software is your only alternative if there is no backup. It may or may not be able to revoker anything from that hard drive. If it does then the only other choice is to go to a data recovery service. If have to go that route expect to pay for it, like $$$$.
    2, Yes. They will at least tell him what the problem is and the cost if any to fix. There is a good chance they will fix it for nothing and only charge for data recovery if they can do it.

  • Hard Drive Failure on Satellite A660

    I bought a new Toshiba A series 9 months ago.
    Within a week I had to return it because the sound card was not working. The store I bought it from did not have an identical replacement so the replacement model cost me an additional $150.
    Now the hard drive has failed.
    Any attempt to back up anything fails so I will lose everything including an important contract. Toshiba tell me that I should go and pay a computer store to save my files!!!
    I would consider it just a coincidence except that a friend who purchased a Qosmio a month before I purchased my A660 has also had her hard drive fail. It has supposedly been repaired under warranty but is still not working.
    So much for Toshiba stating "Toshiba believes that reliability is the single most important feature a laptop can have and understands that it must be built in and not something that can be bolted-on.
    The result? Our laptops have a class-leading reputation for reliability." The technical support person said that its just bad luck - its electronic anything can fail at anytime - thats nothing to do with reliability.
    So what is Toshiba reliability?

    "When you bring your notebook there, they will check if the warranty data at first. If the warranty is valid every defective hardware component will be exchanged for free.
    Maybe it sounds stupid not but I believe people who work in this store have utilized your situation to make more money and sell you new HDD for $150."
    I think you misunderstood. The first time it was a sound card failure and the computer was less than 2 weeks old. It was TOSHIBA that told me to return it to the store (they gave me a specific number to give to the store when returning it) and exchange it for a new computer!!!! The store did not have the exact model to exchange it with. So I had two choices. Pay the $150 or take it home, spend a day dropping it off to Toshiba and then wait 21 days for them to repair a brand new computer that I had not even been able to use, or pay the additional $150 for a different model. Funnily as a consumer I dont expect to pay large amounts of money for something that has to be repaired before it can be used.
    This second problem has now occurred, 9 months later, which is the hard drive failure.
    I do realise that this is a user to user forum, but I am hoping to warn people that Toshiba is no longer a reliable brand. The Toshiba technician told me that the very first thing he expects to fail is the hard drive and I am simply lucky that in 16 years of owning my own home computers that I have never had a hard drive failure. Funny thing is none of my friends have ever had a hard drive failure before either....... My girlfriend and I must be the unluckiest people in the world to both buy brand new Toshiba computers at the same time and to have the hard drive fails at the same time........... Not a strong believer of coincidence I strongly suspect that Toshiba have a problem with a component(s) that they are using, its not just our "bad luck". This is the first time I have even had to use the warranty on a computer that I have purchased.
    On the plus side Toshiba offered to send a courier to collect the computer, of course no replacement or loan computer. I did arrange for them to collect the computer Monday as I was not going to be home yesterday and need to find the correct box and packing materials to return it (they gave me VERY specific instructions on how it must be packed). But then I had a dozen phone calls yesterday from the courier trying to contact me to arrange to pick it up either yesterday or now today. I just hope that they are equally keen to return it as quickly!!!!
    Sorry I am VERY annoyed. I am in a position where I NEED a computer. My son is disabled uses various bits and pieces of medical equipment to survive, (eg ventilators, monitors etc) and I use the computer to communicate with the hospital. If I cant get access to a computer he gets to spend the time I wait for its repair in hospital. I realise that my personal situation is not Toshiba's concern however I paid more and bought the Toshiba because of its reputation for reliability as that was VERY important to me. It has proven to be the most unreliable computer I have ever owned. I will now have to dust off a cheap Dell that is 6 years old, still works just fine, and use that while my expensive Toshiba gets fixed. And thats what is annoying, even my first 2 gig and now 16 year old computer still works, no hard drive failure..........

    I have HPG62 laptop since 10/1/10.  I have had 3 hard drive failures since August.  I also replaced the LCD monitor in October 2011.  With last hard drive failure in November 2011, I also have "wireless module not working".  I ran the diagnostics from laptop: Smart Check test, Run-in test, Hard Disk test, & Memory Module 1 ALL failed.  Smart Check test provided ID: RK2A7S-53H5RS-XD002J-60FT03.  Memory Module 1 provided ID: RK2A7S-53H5RP-XD002J-409F03.  My question is what is causing the hard drive to fail so many times and why are there so many things going wrong with 14 month old laptop?

    Welcome to the HP Support Forum and thank you for your post.
    Now lets see what we can do about your red pixel issue.
    First thing first.  You are noticing the red pixels on black backgrounds this would most commonly be a stuck pixel.  There are a few things that can be done to fix this and they will work in most cases.

  • My 13" black macbook keeps having hard drive failures -- I'm on my third hard drive

    The first one lasted 2 years. It failed within the special warranty period that Apple offered because so many computers like mine were also having hard drive failures. I didn't know about the special warranty they were offering, even after contacting Apple and telling them about my problem and describing the exact symptoms of the problem they were fixing for free. Thank you for that. So I went to a local store and paid ~$130 to have it fixed. This time I was paranoid about not moving my computer, and if I did have to move it, make sure it was off. Then without warning, it happens again less than 2 years later. I would expect a computer hard drive, especially one that is taken care of as well as mine, to last more ~20 months (less than 2 years) TWICE. It seems that this is a problem not with the hard drive but with the computer. I'm pretty upset that hard drives are now basically disposable -- I'm afraid to use it now unless absolutely necessary, otherwise I'll feel like I'm making its clock tick closer and closer to the next time it fries the hard drive. For as much as I paid for this computer, I expect a bit more than that. Unless there is some magical fix to this, I can safely say my next computer will be a super cheap net book.
    Does anyone have any more info on this, any ways to avoid frying more hard drives, or has any one had any luck resolving this issue with Apple? I greatly appreciate any help. Thank you!

    Mechanical hard drives have moveable parts and they are going to fail eventually. Every drive has an MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) rating in the thousands of hours, but that is an average (half will fail sooner, half will fail later) not an absolute longevity guarantee.
    I've used an original (Apple-OEM Fujitsu 120Gb 5400rpm), a Hitachi 320Gb 7200rpm, and currently a Seagate 500Gb 7200rpm drive in my mid-2007 MacBook. I replaced the 120Gb because I was running out of room. I still use it as an external backup for certain files. The 320Gb Hitachi failed after less than two years, but had a three-year-warranty, so it was replaced at no charge. I'm using the Hitachi replacement externally to clone my current drive in order to test OS X and software updates before installing them 'for keeps' on my working system.
    A solid-state (SSD) drive might be less prone to mechanical failure, but that is still no absolute guarantee that it won't EVER fail, and SSD's are still about double or more the cost of mechanical drives. 
    The best thing is to simply be prepared for the eventual failure with a strategy for frequent and reliable backups.
