32-bit 10g2 database with 40+GB datafiles

Hi,
I have a COTS product which uses 32-bit Oracle database. Currently, there 40+GB of datafiles. While monitoring the database server, I realised the number of processes hit>80 which leads to browsing my COTS product's performance deteroriated. People have recommend to increase the PGA and SGA, it seems better.
Just wondering, how much datafiles can a 32-bit database handle? Cause the max memory that i can assign to a 32-bit server is only 4GB

becks wrote:
Understand datafiles size is limited the disk space, was thinking if a 32-bit database can process that amount of datafiles w/o increasing the RAM. I asking this because when the database is first setup, we do not experience any performanace issue. Now we are experiencing the deteroriate and the situation is better after increasing the SGA and PGA. What is the actual root cause?
The advice to increase SGA means increasing Oracle's shared memory. The SGA comprises of multiple buffer areas. None is specific to the number of database files.
Ito file I/O, the Buffer Cache can be increased in order to have a larger cache for data in memory. But this is not directly related to the number of database files - it relates to what data is read from disk (database files). A small buffer cache can be a problem with a small number of data files - and not a problem with a large number of data files. The issue is the nature of the I/O being done - and not the number of data files.
As for PGA - that relates to how the PL/SQL engine is used (PL/SQL code design). Not to the number of data files.
I believe increasing SGA and PGA is related to the RAM of the database server. Correct.
So was thinking that we have to keep increasing SGA and PGA when the size of datafiles increased again. As already mentioned - there is no direct relationship between the number of data files and the SGA. PGA relates to the PL/SQL engine (private process memory) - and this too has nothing to do with the number of data files.
So thinking that 4GB is limited by 32-bit server, there will be a MAX memory that i can increas the SGA and PGA.Perhaps you should tell the forum what the actual performance problem is - instead of discussion a solution (increasing the SGA/PGA) that has no direct bearing on the number of data files used by the database.

    please help me

    Hi
If block level recovery is fin thru RMAN then open the database in mount state then do recover database and then open the database.
The above procedure is not work then you need to recreate the controlfile with existing datafile except that corrupt file. After recreating do full imp. It will solve the issue.

  • Problems connecting to 32 bit msaccess database from 64 bit 11G

    Here is the issue:
I have a 9i (32 bit windows) database with an hsodbc connection to an an older access database so once schema can see & copy data from said access database, all works fine.
I'm getting ready to move the database to 64 bit 11.2.0.3 on windows 2008 64 bit server, database is migrated and tested ok.
The problem is with the dg4odbc connection, I have created connections for AS400 databases and they're ok, but I set up an ODBC to the access database, using the 32 bit ODBC interface as MS recommends, but I still keep getting this error:
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] The specified DSN contains an architecture
    mismatch between the Driver and Application {IM014}
ORA-02063: preceding 2 lines from RADERDB
According to MS technet this is from not using the c:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe to set up the ODBC connection, but I did use that executable, when I use the regular 64 bit ODBC admin I can't even see msaccess drivers to begin with.
The funny thing is, when I point the tnsnames.ora entry to the old 9i server, it uses that ODBC connection and then the 11G dblink then works fine. However this is a band-aid solution and I want to get everything working from the new production database server.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks in advance..

The message means that you're using a 32bit ODBC driver with a 64bit program. That does not work. If you want to connect with the 64bit DG4ODBC you need to use a 64bit ODBC driver. There's a package available from the Microsoft Technet sites (AccessDatabaseEngine_x64 - http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=13255 ) that ships 64bit ODBC drivers for their Excel/Access programs.
Please be aware that installing 32bit gateway products on 64bit Windows is NOT supported.

  • To recover a database with old and new datafiles.

    Hi;
Please Give a Solution for the following problem.
    First I shutdown the databae.
Copy all the redolog, control file and Datafile except one.
One datafile i miss at the time of copy.
Then I start the database and do some transactions.
At that time my system tablespace has been corrupted.
So i copy the old backup and overwrite with the actul file.
So one file backup is not there, that i forgot to take.
At the time of opening the database it shows that datafile version is higher than the controlfile.
Now what i did is came to mount stage and type the following command.
    ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE <FILENAME> OFFLINE DROP;
After that i open the database.
Now the problem is that missing file contain very important data.
Is it possible to recover the data?
Please give me an immediate solution.

Is the database running in archive log mode? Do you have any export dump files for the data in question?

  • Any issue with application server on 32 bit and database server on 62 bit

    Hi Experts,
Please confirm that application server on 32 bit and database server on 62 bit will not cause any communication related performance issues between the servers ?
    Thanks
    Raman

    Hi Anurag,
the .Net server for BPC 7.5 NW and the app/web server for BPC 7.5 MS can both run on either 32- or 64-bit server OS. However my understanding is that they are still 32-bit processes and as such have the same limitations on 64-bit windows as they do on 32-bit (in particular the addressable RAM limitation at 4 GB)
Note, and this is important, that this is for version 7.5 only. The BPC 7.0 MS web/app server HAS to be on 32-bit OS.

  • Oracle 10g - Cross-Platform Transportable Database (with or without RMAN?)

    Hello guys,
i am currently on a project for migrating oracle databases from one platform to another platform (both platforms are on the same endianess):
    -> From Linux 64-Bit to Windows 64-Bit
    -> From HP-UX 64-Bit to AIX 64-Bit
All databases are on Oracle 10g (10.2.0.4) and i have tested two different ways:
    1) The "official" way with RMAN CONVERT DATABASE
    http://youngcow.net/doc/oracle10g/backup.102/b14191/dbxptrn002.htm#CHDEEEAG
    2) "Copy & Paste"
    - Copy & Paste of the database files
    - Recreate controlfile manually on target platform (with help of "backup controlfile to trace" on source platform)
Both ways are working well and the migrated test databases are running fine.
Now i am wondering why there is a "RMAN CONVERT DATABASE" command, if it possible to copy and paste the data files and perform two steps manually afterwards.
The "RMAN CONVERT DATABASE" is time consuming and you still need to copy the RMAN output files to the target platform.
Is there any special reason, why you need the "RMAN CONVERT DATABASE"? Does the "RMAN CONVERT DATABASE" change some things in the database files internally?
    Thanks and Regards

    Hello,
    Anurag Tibrewal wrote:
If the source platform and the target platform are of different endianness, then an additional step must be done on either the source or target platform to convert the tablespace being transported to the target format. Of course .. in this case you can not use the "Cross-Platform Transportable Database" - you have to use the "Cross-Platform Tranportable Tablespace" (with RMAN CONVERT DATAFILE or TABLESPACE).
    Anurag Tibrewal wrote:
If they are of the same endianness, then no conversion is necessary and tablespaces can be transported as if they were on the same platform.Yes, but oracle provides this with RMAN and the command "RMAN CONVERT DATABASE" .. as i already wrote i have already performed the two ways "RMAN CONVERT DATABASE" and "just copy & paste" and both are working fine.
So my question is if there is any special case in which you should use the RMAN way with "RMAN CONVERT DATABASE" instead of just "copy & paste" if you stay on the same endianness?

  • How can I clean all data in a database but keep all datafile still same nam

    hi,
How can I get a easy way to clean all data in a database but keep all datafiles still same name and location just like a new created database?
dbca has two choice: create templet without datafile or with all datafiles but not empty datafiles.
    thanks

What version is your database? DBCA in 10gR2 allows you to create a template from an existing database using only the structure. From DBCA
From an existing database (structure only)
The template will contain structural information about the source database including database options, tablespaces, datafiles, and initialization parameters specified in the source database. User defined schemas and thier data will not be part of the created template.

I think I understand now, you are modifing the custom login modules configuration within the system-jazn-data.xml file. This is a bit dangerous! Didn't you register the login module in your orion-application.xml? For example, this is the way I do it:

(Windows 7 OS 32 bit and everything 32 bit has connected for years too)
So when I configure an ODBC User DSN and leave all the default settings and press the TEST Connection button, it says it works.
But when I open the existng Access 2010 database (which does connect to Oracle in a Windows 7 32 bit PC environment),
    1. I go to Access External Data ribbon tab / Link to the Data Source by creating a linked table / press OK
    2. I select the Machine Data source = to the USER DSN name / press OK
    3. The Oracle ODBC Driver Connect Window opens with Service Name = USER DSN and User Name and it wants a Password
    4. I enter the correct password and I get the following error message:
    ODBC call failed
[Oracle][ODBC]{Ora]ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    (#12154) [Microsoft][ODBC Driver manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed IM006 0
             [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed (#0)
I have tried a quite a number of fixes:
I have gone into the PC registry and cleaned out most or all off the Oracle client keys and
reinstalled the Oracle 32 bit 10g client. It didn't fix the error.
I read about the Oracle instantclient-basic-win32-10.2.0.4.zip with ODBC modules but I have Windows 7 64 bit.
Anyone experienced a problem like this and have a fix?

    Thank you for your reply.
I did not get to try it because after I entered my question, I did a lot more internet Googling.
    I found this small comment:
“There's a known issue where you get a 12154 error message running 32 bit software on a 64 bit OS using client 10201, and
It should be resolved by patching the client to 10204, which you do by applying the 10204 database patch to it.”
I searched around for the 10.2.0.4 patch for 10.2.0.1 Oracle 32 bit client.
When I contacted my Oracle DBA to ask if he had that patch, he said that I should try the 11g 32 bit client on the Win 7 64 bit PC.
We have a 10.2.0.4 Oracle database but he said the 11g client should work fine.
I tried it and it solved the problem!
With so many settings, configurations and permissions involved in ODBC, I am inclined to think that I missed a setting but
it was a bug in the 32 bit client 10.2.0.1.
    Solved.

  • SQL exception during creation of a physical standby database with EM

Version: EM Oracle 10.2.5 (agents running, repository running, primary db running, all targets visible and reachable with EM)
I try to create a physical standby database with the enterprise manager and each time the process is aborted with a SQL exception during the preparation of the job by the EM. I have added a part of the OMs log containing the error at the end of the excerpt.

I have set the agent perl script tracing to DEBUG, but can't find any reason, why the job preparation failed.
Has anyone an idea why the job cannot be prepared? Thanks in advance for investigation :-)

  • Logical Standby Database with 10g+ASM on both sides??

    Hi out there,
is there a known way to establish a logical standby database on 10g, if both
sides are running with an ASM setup?
I've tried to create one out of a physical standby database (which is set up
and running w/o any problems), like a book suggested me to do.
    The procedure was:
    1. switch on supplemental logging
    2. prepare initiation parameters (for archive logging etc.) on both sides for
    logical stb.
    3. shut down the phyiscal standby
    4. alter database create logical standby controlfile as '<path>'; on the
primary, transfer the controlfile to the standby db. Here I had to use RMAN
to copy the controlfile into the ASM System, and modify the initfile/spfile
in order to use the controlfile. No problem so far.
    5. mount the standby database, alter database recover managed standby database
disconnect; -> At this point, the alert log complained about non-available
    datafiles.
    6. alter database activate standby database; --> fails ("needs recovery") due
    to last point.
The trouble is, the controlfile created at point 4 cointains wrong paths to
the datafiles. Since I can not have the same disk group name on the standby
system, and since ASM renames the stored datafiles by its own, the complaints
of point 5 are comprehensible, but nevertheless annoying.
I tried to backup a controlfile to trace and change the paths, but at after
mounting the standby with this controlfile and proceeding at point 5, the
system says "<path> is not a standby controlfile"
Is there a different way of creating a "Logical Standby Database with 10g+ASM
on both sides"? Metalink said nothing about LogStby and ASM.
Best regards and thanks in advance,
    Martin

I'm not sure if this will work but try:
    1. create trace control file (you did it)
    2. change paths (you did it)
    3. recrate control file (you did it)
... there was error occured during mount before
so mount database (not as standby)
    4. create standby control file (from recreated control file)
    5. shutdown instance, replace control file with new standby control file or replace the control filename in parameter file.
    6. mount as standby
    What happend?
Update: Tested on my side and it has worked fine... How about you?

    Aftershotz,
You're going to have to give a bit more information.
What do you mean by "opening a file in library?"  There is no function of Aperture to open files -- you can open (switch) libraries.
You'll have to be more specific about error messages, too.  Perhaps some screenshots would be useful to diagnose your problem.  "Can't open database with library name" is not enough detail about what Aperture is really telling you.
