3com 3c905C No crash, bad MAC address

Hello,
Thankfully, the 3c905C is now in the machine and doesn't crash it. It boots up great, with no errors.
The next question, is how do I get the NIC to return the correct MAC address for the card?
netstat -p shows:
elxl0 hostname 255.255.255.255 SP 00:00:00:00:00:00
Something tells me this is not the right MAC address, and that this may explain why attempts to bring up an IP on the NIC 'seems' to work, but to the outside world it is unreacheable.
Someone else posted about nvram, not sure if this could be the issue....
Mike

As root you can either do 'ifconfig elxl0' or 'arp `hostname`'. Either should show you the MAC for your card. If you can't get that up, have a look at this thread:
http://forum.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=11&thread=5065
It may be an issue with the driver not loading properly.

  • Xserve Bad MAC address - Unable to reach DNS

I have just set up our new Xserver, and have had many difficulties diagnosing network problems. I am able to log into the system via ssh using it's fixed ip number and domain name, but I am unable to use the server admin tools to connect to the system (The Xserve is rack-mounted at a remote location, we have no monitor or graphics card installed. According to /var/log/system.log, when the system boots, it is unable to locate DNS, and is unable to properly set its hostname. While I can log in, I am unable to reach (ping) any outside host. I am certain the DNS IP numbers are correct in the network settings (both resolve.conf and networksetup properly report it).
However, after reviewing the /var/log/system.log and using networksetup command-line inquires, I have determined the MAC addresses for the two en0 and en1 ports are incorrect in the system log. networksetup reports the correct DNS IP numbers and hostname... but the MAC addresses do not match the ones in the system.log
Is my only alternative to re-install the OS? or is there an easier way to correct the problem via a command-line?
When I set up the system the MAC addresses, I read them and the serial number from the tab on the back of the Xserve. It was so poorly printed I was unable to properly distinguish between an "E" and a "3" or and "8" or an "F"... it was nearly impossible to read the numbers in the pull-out tab in the back of the machine because too much ink was used in the printing... I even used a magnifying glass!

Well, it took over a week for Apple to get the replacement install DVD to me, and I finally did successfully re-install the OS. I followed a previous posters advice and only used one ethernet port for both my regular and LOM ethernet setup, and that seems to have been the ticket.
This whole process would have been a lot easier if we had added the graphics card for the Xserve. I would have used it only once, but it would have saved me a days instead of trying to do a headless boot nad setting up over a network. My other tibbit of advice is to do the install plugged into the network you plan on using. In my case, the location we co-locate our servers was initially hesitant to let me in the main computer room to do the setup, and I tried doing it in their office location on a different LAN. I should have insisted at the beginning I needed to be in the computer room. Highly inconvienent though, freezing, hundreds of fans in the room going, setting up my client system on a chair, etc. This is my third server install, and all three were very difficult to perform. Once these servers are running though, they still take a tiny fraction of the time mantaining compared to our old Solaris/Windows systems!

  • 3com 3c905C Causes system crash

    Hello,
I've been trying to set up my Solaris 8 (04/01) servers with the 3c905CX-TNM Network cards from 3com.
I use devfsadm -v to find the device
I then use ifconfig elxl0 to plumb the device, which works fine.
Then I use ifconfig elxl0 192.168.50.4 up and the system panics, crashes, and reboots before I can see what the problem is.
Anyway, I have read through this and other boards that this card should work with this system. I've been using Solaris on Sun hardware for the last few years, and have come to like the OS, but for Intel, it's not seeming very cooperative. Any other ideas? Perhaps I should just move my development into Linux.
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • TC Crashing When Adding a MAC Address

so, every time I try to add my Logitech revue's MAC address to my time capsule it crashes, i have to manually go pull the plug and plug it back in and then all is back to normal.........
    totally lost....
afaik, my time capsule has the current firmware.......

wow, can't believe it was a whole year later that i remembered this problem, but, it was some kind of firmware issue with my timecapsule.....
i do appreciate the offer for help though.

  • Why does my AE gen 2 crash when I put my iPhone MAC address in?

AE gen 2 with Time Capsule.
I use MAC address for security (I think that is OK). I have a number of items that need WIFI and their specific MAC addresses are put into the box. All OK so far! Recently my wife and I have purchased iPhone which I also want to have access to WIFI from AE. In goes WIFI address for both phones and it will not restart after 'UPDATE' command given.
Push the reset button while it is plugged in and it comes back minus the MAC addresses specific to the iPhone!!!!!
Any ideas? Could it need replacing?
I tried going to WPA2 Personal but my wifes laptop kept coming back with "Connection Timed Out".
Have done HARD reset (Reset button with power cord out then insert while keeping reset button pushed) and no difference.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thx
    David

Both our laptops are MacBook Pros.
Then they both really shouldn't have any issues connecting to a wireless network configured to use WPA2 Personal which uses the AES/CCMP encryption protocol. Currently the strongest security type available for consumer wireless networking.
I was under the impression MAC addresses were pretty secure.
Although MAC addresses are unique, as I have mentioned they can be spoofed. So a wireless client, using a spoofed MAC address, can easily bypass any security method that relies on these addresses. The other security failacy is closing or disabling the broadcast of the wireless network name. This may thwart the most casual network leech, but like MAC addresses, the network name (or SSID) can still be found using utilities easily obtained from the Internet.

  • How to make mac address gmail contacts overwrite the ones on my HTC Android phone - I don't want to sync - that makes the phone scramble and overwrite my computer.  I want to remove or correctly overwrite the phone information as I have done with iPad.

Please help - I am beginning to hate google, my android and gmail.  I have just wasted about 5 hours in a futile attempt to try and get my current Mac contacts list on my computer updated to my phone. I'm not that computer literate but I have looked up about google phone accounts, vCards, backing up contact lists, what SD on phones are, and God know what else.  I have searched the internet and tried all sorts of things and I still have a mac with a now correct contact list (after the iPad contacts scrambled it and I spent ages manually correcting them all) and a phone with an outdated contact list.  If you try and sync them the phone wants to overwrite the computer one just like the iPad did (would it be so **** hard to give you a choice on the phone as to which overwrites which!).  After all the  advice on the internet failed, I got the bright idea to completely delete all the ones on the phone and if it was empty of contacts the computer one could be exported to it.  Not as simple as it sounds.  First I backed up (I think) my computer contacts list. Numerous futile attempts to go through the phone options to globally delete all contacts did not work - they gave a warning message and you got to choose whether to continue or not, I did, and it looked like it might be working as it changed to zero data on the phone, but then they all popped back up again from God knows where from, but without their little added bits like pictures of the people.  So, I tried un- syncing the darn phone from  google and then deleting them globally.  That didn't work either.  I tried deleting them  all again and again and google would crash and not let me do it. It is absolutely ridiculous that this is so damned difficult to do (especially if you are not computer savvy) and that you cannot choose which device overwrites which when syncing. I gave up and ticked sync with Google again (not that it appears to do anything to the phone contact list at all).  So after 5 hours I am back to where I started from, with a phone showing all the same  incorrect contacts (but the pictures are back), which wants to overwrite the computer if I try any sort of sync, and no way to fix them except go into each one manually and try and do it - and how long would that take (and I've already wasted hours and hours fixing scrambled contact lists!).  I think I will do a print out of the computer contact list and just carry it around with me like an address book - so much bloody simpler.  So now I have a headache, am fighting an overwhelming urge to hurl the phone at the wall,  hoping for a heat wave to evaporate icloud things and am wishing I had bought an iPhone instead of the stupid HTC Android.  Can any one offer me any suggestions on how to get rid of the contacts on my phone and replace them with the ones in my mac address list - hopefully after that  they can sync to their hearts content and not stuff everything up again (which was why I unsynced google a while back - because the phone's list kept making stuff ups and scrambling and duplicating my computer contacts list).  Am I the only one on the planet having this problem or is there someone else out there who has had it and solved it.

Without "pretending" to be yourself on the other phone (change settings) there's nothing else you can do.
iOS devices are meant to be single user and can't view iCloud.com the same way a Mac or PC can do.
You need to find a desktop or laptop machine (Mac or PC) to log in at iCloud.

  • Do I need to add Base Station MAC address to list?

Hi, If I choose to use MAC address filtering on my Airport Extreme Time Capsule, do I need to add the wireless MAC address of the Base Station to the list of allowed MAC addresses???  I'd feel real bad if I set up a list, didn't include the base station's MAC address and then could never get in to the network again because I, in effect, locked myself out???  I doubt that address needs to be included but I would like some feedback on that.
Second, does the one MAC address filter list apply to the Guest Network as well if I should choose to turn it on???  If that was the case, I would just turn off MAC address filtering why guests were present.
    thanks..  bob

If I choose to use MAC address filtering on my Airport Extreme Time Capsule, do I need to add the wireless MAC address of the Base Station to the list of allowed MAC addresses???
No. Timed Access would be for wireless devices....computers, mobile devices, printer, etc., that are connecting to the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule does not connect to itself in this regard.
I'd feel real bad if I set up a list, didn't include the base station's MAC address and then could never get in to the network again because I, in effect, locked myself out???
Sometimes, users lock themselves out by mistake by entering incorrect times for devices to connect, and they often forget that they can connect to the base station using an Ethernet connection and get back in that way.....since Timed Access only applies to devices that connect using wireless.
does the one MAC address filter list apply to the Guest Network as well if I should choose to turn it on???
    Yes

  • Should I use a MAC address to validate users for my program?

I'm writing a graphical console program and I was planning on using a few methods for security. One being to block a user from logging in again if they don't type the correct username and password within three tries until the root user authenticates it again. I was planning on blocking the IP address but someone suggested blocking the MAC address since no 2 have the same ID and it's burned in, not to mention alot of people have dynamic addresses. However, I was reading that MAC addresses are mainly used in ethernet cards. I thought any device that has network capabilities has to have a MAC address? Is it good to use a MAC address for blocking someone from logging in again or what?

Its very easy to change your MAC address. If you have a wireless router (which you can buy for like 20 dollars) then you can tell it what MAC address to use. So I agree, don't use a MAC address to block users from your program. Also are you sending the username/password over the network in clear text? If so, these can be intercepted. So doing that may be a bad idea; it depends on how much security you want for your application.

  • Can I get the Mac address in Audit logs of Active directory server for the user's machine which connect to the network/Domain

    Hello All,
I am trying to get the information of all the user's who connect to our Domain network by signing in using the domain account. For this I am using the Windows audit group policies ( I am not sure of there is any other way). I can see when the user tries
to login to the network there is a audit event created on the AD/DC server. I can see the Kerberos authentication and logon/logoff events in the audit events under event viewer.
However the info which is being populated in these events include :- Hostname, IP address, Username and so on... But I can't see the MAC address of the user machine/system. Is there any way I can
get the Mac address of the endpoint system as its one of the important criteria for our project.
Any inputs on this would be appreciated, incase if there is any other way other than group policies please suggest.
    Thanks,

If you use DHCP, you can query the DHCP server. There's no builtin
method to get the MAC address directly.

  • WRT54GL MAC ADDRESS FILTER

Hi I have a wireless access point WRT54GL and i configure it with mac address filter but it allow me to put only 40 mac and i need more? Is there any way to add more? Thanx

Install 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt or hyperwrt+thibor. That should give you more. However, remember a bad flash may brick the router and is not covered by warranty.
Also remember, that the wireless mac address filter does not provide you with any reasonable security. MAC addresses are quickly captured and quickly cloned. It only takes a few minutes to gather some mac addresses which are allowed into your wireless network and that's it.
Set up wireless security with WPA2 or WPA and a strong passphrase. That's all you can do to really protect your wireless.
If you want more detailed access control, consider installing a RADIUS server and using user/password authentication based on WPA2 or WPA (using the RADIUS or Enterprise variants).
But the wireless mac address filter is widely overrated as security mean and only requires a lot of work and time to maintain the lists.

  • How can I import iPhone contacts into Mac Address book

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and am in the process of trying to dump my Windows PC.
All of my important contacts are on my iPhone. How can I get those contacts into my Mac Address Book?
The same question goes for the music (ripped from CD) and my video files that are on my iPhone? The media is not that big of a deal because I can easily transfer it from my PC to my Mac but I assume I am not the only one in the world trying to do this and that Apple would make it very easy for MSFT Windows users to easily migrate to Macs.
I must be an idiot but I don't see any option in iTunes to transfer the data from my iPhone into iTunes and/or the Address Book.
    Thanks

The iPhone's primary function is NOT a word processor or a spread sheet analyzer.
I didn't say, nor was I trying to imply ANYTHING of the sort. You should read what I provided again a little slower and in it's entirety, not taking this out of context, which you made into Apples and Oranges.
It IS an iPod, a device designed to store and play music (in addition to being a browser and a phone).
It is a phone, an iPod, and an internet device, which supports transferring iTunes content from iTunes on a single computer ONLY.
Making it difficult to transfer my legal music from my iPhone to my Mac does not make me want to go out and buy more Apple products or Apple software.
Good, then don't - no skin off my back. I couldn't care less if you want to remain a Windows sufferer. All this doesn't come from Apple. Much of it comes from those who OWN the distribution rights for content sold thru the iTunes Store.
All of Apple's commercials imply how easy the user experience is over Windows. Well, in this case, they missed the boat BIG TIME!
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but let me get this straight. You will likely need to transfer much more than just music from your Windows PC to your Mac and if so, how do you plan on accomplishing this? If you are transferring Word and Excel files, photos, and any other data, you won't be using an iPhone for this, so I don't see the big deal with transferring your iTunes library along with all other data being transferred.
I understand that the iPhone was not designed to be used as a backup. However, you allow the contacts to be merged in but not the music that I legally installed (but didn't purchase from the iTunes store).
I don't allow anything - this is a user to user help forum only.
As I provided in my first post in this thread - the sync process for contact information, calendar events, and bookmarks with an iPhone is bidirectional with the supported application on your computer. This is a sync process by definition of syncing - which is not the same for other data such as iTunes content and photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296
Apple wants to make it difficult unless I purchased the music from iTunes.
No, Apple or really those who own the distribution rights or the copyright holders for content sold thru the iTunes Store wants to make this difficult. Content sold thru the iTunes Store is set up by Apple to be a break even - which is included with the Apple stockholder's report. Apple makes their profit via sales of the iPod and iPhone. The bulk of the iTunes Store revenue goes to those who own the distribution rights or the copyright holders for the content.
In addition, if my hard disk suffered a crash and I lost all my music it just seems stupid not to be able to pull it off my iPhone (yes, I know data should be backed up on a different drive, and mine is, but I am sure a lot of people do not back up their data).
Maintaining a backup of your data is important for this very reason, and for other reasons which is not Apple's responsibility. I believe iTunes includes an occasional warning message to backup your iTunes library (which can be turned off), and iTunes includes an option to transfer content purchased from the iTunes Store from an iPod or iPhone - since the overwhelming majority of this content includes DRM protection required by those who own the distribution rights or the copyright holders.
The iPhone was not designed as an external storage device or as a backup device - end of story. If someone chooses not to maintain a backup, they are playing Russian roulette with their data. Maintaining a backup is important regardless the platform, but even more so when running Windows with constant virus, adware, and spyware concerns.

That's good, but I can't find that option. Where is it?

  • Mac-Address Different format for Authorization on Cisco ISE

    Dear All,
I have problem with my Cisco ISE,
    This is the design :
ISE ---- Core Switch ---- 3Com Switch --- PC User
    My Case:
Authorization is based on Mac-address and Active Directory,
But user with PC that connect to 3Com swtich is Deny by ISE because the Format Mac-address is different with Cisco,
    Mac-address Cisco format :  XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
    Mac-address 3Com format :  XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
    3Com Switch type is TRICOM 4210 26-PORT.
Anyone have experience with this? and how change the mac-address format in 3Com so user can authorized by Cisco ISE.
    note:
authorization based on Active Directory is not problem with 3Com Switch.
Based on my experience, Different product is different format mac-address, so this case not only for 3Com Switch.
    Thanks,
    Arika Wahyono

I do not think Cisco will add these vendors to the supported switch matrix because then it would be a support issue that cisco would have to deal with, much like most of the AD issues I experienced when I worked in TAC. Your best bet would be to run the evaluation license instance in a lab and have a 3com switch point against that.
Other than that I do not recommend upgrading to 1.2 without validating that the new "multi-vendor" MAB support will work on your switch.
PS- Keep in mind that my comments is just my opinion so you may need to open a TAC case for an official answer.

It's been bad (ever since my free trial was over and I actually bought the thing ) but now it's just crashing every 10 minutes or so, sometime ever 3. Anything I try to do besides just read (search, highlight, copy, really anything) will set it off. When I open it again the documents it offers me as "recent" are things I read 2 or 3 weeks ago--not sure what that means.  Please someone help, I'm going crazy and I'm on a deadline! I know I'm not posting this to the right place, but the right place is oh so helpfully read only...so....Thanks!

    Hi Alexis
Is it happening with all the PDF ' or any specific one ?
You face this challenge while trying to launch a PDF or while editing it as well?
What exact version of Acrobat version are you using? If it is not Acrobat 11.0.10 ,you can try updating it to the same and see if that helps.
Launch Acrobat>Navigate to Help>Check for Updates.
You can try downloading this patch as well and see if this fixes the issue.

I need the MAC accress from the printer so I can enter it into the security of my router.  Does the printer have a MAC address and where do I find it?

As a side note -- MAC-filtering does not improve the security of your wireless-network in any meaningful way.  The best way to secure your home wireless network is to use WPA-PSK (or WPA2-PSK) encryption.
MAC-filtering is easily spoofed.  It's trivial to listen in on a wireless network, note the MAC addresses being used and to reprogram one of those MAC addresses into your notebook's wireless radio.
BTW -- hiding your SSID is also a bad idea from a security point of view since it doesn't hide your network at all.
There's a good discussion here on this subject.
