403, extra user, files locked....

Have been happy for years -  have just set up a dozen web sites in Sites/ by moving them from another folder (where they were fine - just thought I'd use the Sites folder...) and suddenly these problems.
I have read and tried things - repaired permissions, Apache hosts etc all fine (and always were) and signposted correctly to new folder.
So...saving a web site (I use Rapidweaver) says it cant save because the file is locked.
In "Info". It isn't.
Someone suggested that I may not be the owner suddenly - where is this shown (not in "Info")?
In "info" quite a few files have a new extra user.
Me, rw, staff, r, everyone, r and now...
everyone again but with Custom access. And it cannot be removed.
So to the web sites. set up in Sites/ as, say, /hereford.
This site works fine.
as /wizard - the index page is fine but subsequent pages such as parties have css and images in a subfolder which are not being accessed/served.
Other sites just get a 403 yet I cannot work out what is different!
html. php - some work some don't.
None of the folders or files are locked (in "Info").
Any ideas, please?

Hi Dave,
Most of the time, nothing is actually locking the file itself. When a user is modifying the file, Office will create a hidden temp file. It's the temp file that gets accessed by any programs.
This KB Article has a description of the way that Excel saves files:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814068/en-us
There are multiple causes for the problem, here is a public blog from the Microsoft Excel Support Team, which has a thorough discussion of the file locking issues. You might want to have a look:

  • Why is The iTunes Library Extras.itdb file locked?

After my walk this morning I tried to connect up to iTunes to chargemy ipod and update my tunes and got an error message:
"The iTunes Library.itdb file is locked, on a locked disc, or you do not have write permission for this file."
    WHY WHY WHY ???

I had the same problem after a "force quit".
    1. Quit iTunes
    2. Locate your iTunes folder in finder and open it
    3. Locate the "iTunes Library Extras.itdb" file, right click it and select Copy "iTunes Library Extras.itdb"
    5. Rename your original "iTunes Library Extras.itdb" to "iTunes Library ExtrasOld".itdb
    6. Move the your copied "iTunes Library Extras.itdb file back into the same folder as i came from
Repeate 3>6 for the "iTunes Library Genius.itdb" file
Re-open iTunes, the error messages should now be gone.
    This worked for me, anyway

I can't open iTunes on a lenovo with a Windows 8.1 operating system. I get the following message...
The iTunes Library Extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.
    PLEASE HELP!!

Thanks! I have been having to open iTunes as an administrator for a year - never could find the answer. Now I am trying to link the account to Disney Movie Rewards and I needed it to open under menot administrator. I deleted the Extras file and then also needed to delete the Genius file. Once that was done it opened immediately.

  • Office 2010 & 2007 - Excel and Access File Locking Out On the Network With Multiple Users

This is also posted in the Office 2010 - IT Pro General Discussions, but was suggested to repost here, since a definitive answer was not found.
    Hi,
An issue that's happening is that Excel and Access files are locking on the network. We're currently using Office 2007 and 2010.
Here are some different scenarios that are happening:
When opening the file it is locked out by “User X” which is the person that has the file locked out and no one else can open the file.
When opening the file it is locked out by “User Y” which is NOT the actual person, but is locked out by “User X” and no one else can access the file.
When opening the file  it is locked out by “…another user” which is generic and no one else can access the file.
The two more common events are incident 1 and 2 with 3 happening the less common.
This message will continue until the sessions are closed through computer management on the file server.
The file server is running Windows Server 2003.
This does happen on both Windows XP and Windows 7 clients.
This does happen for users using Office 2007 and Office 2010.
There are two sets of Office 2010 Users when it comes to patches. Everyone has the most current patches with Office 2010 SP2 while anyone that has Microsoft Project 2010 is using all the current update before Office 2010 SP2.
All users that are using Office 2007 have all the current patches and service packs.
Another variable is that we have users that will leave a file open on the network for 3+ days and after a while it will lock the file out.
Also we have Shadow Copy that runs daily on the system which I'm not for sure if that impacts anything if a file is opening during that time.
Any ideas on how to mitigate the lock out issues would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Binary Process
Edit November 12, 2013: This issue can occur if and if not another person actually has the file open. If the person doesn't have the file open then there is a hung connection which needs to be disconnected by going to the Computer Management of the File
    server.

    Hi Binary,
I know that the description of the hotfix does not relate to the issue. The purpose is to install it for upgrading SMB related file.
A similar issue I encountered before:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/b7fcc59b-52d9-4a02-863a-1a529bcb8cb1/temp-doc-etc-files-dont-close-after-a-file-closes-this-causes-locked-files?forum=winserverfiles
It is resolved by upgrading SMB files so maybe it will help on your case.
    Another hotfix which may related:

  • I had a new hard drive fitted to my imac and restored it from my time machine back when I try to open itunes I get this message "the itunes library extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"

I had a new hard drive fitted to my imac and restored it from my time machine back up on an external hard drive when I try to open itunes I get this message "the itunes library extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

I actually was having problems with syncing of my iphone. It was suggested I get rid of this file. I took it from my itunes folder (unsure where it was. I just searched the folder) and put it on my desktop. When I plugged in tmy iPhone, it reappeared and my sync went fine. I am guessing you can do the same

  • Migration Assistant. extra User, double the files - only 10 GB left on HD

I restored my system after a login "freeze", following an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  Apple help advised to use Migration Assistant to back up everything from Time Machine.  Now I have an extra user ID (as they said I would) but the file structure doubled!  This leaves me only 10GB on a 500GB drive - which I read is not good.  Do I wipe the drive and start over but instead restore files one by one, or do I delete all the files in the new user ID, or is there some other idea I should consider?  It appears there are dups of all the files from user to user, but I fear they are linked and deleting one will delete the other.  Help.

Apple told me to go back to the originally supplied OS X (Leopard 10.5.x), then use the Snow L upgrade disc - is this really required ?
Yes, because your machine came with 10.5, there is a free iLife suit on the 10.5 disks that is not on the 10.6.3 retail disks.
BTW the 10.6.3 disks have the full 10.6 on it too, just no iLife. So you could have installed 10.6.3, Software Updated and installed another iLife if you needed it.  A option to keep in mind for the future if the 10.5 disk no longer boots.
Last question ( for now;), what about apps I've downloaded (no disks)?
You need to download new copies from original sources. Your basically rebuilding your machine from the ground up to be reliable. If you have licenses, just email the developer and tell them your TM drive got screwed up, you had to rebuild your machine from scratch and need a new license code.
Programs need to be installed in most cases with the developers installer as they can place files in certain locations on your computer, including copy protection methods etc.
Once you have your brand new pristine system, then clone that to a couple of new blank external drives, date them, leave one as original, the other you set to update by tweaking CCC's settings to clone/backup according to your preferences.
    Good Luck.

  • VIEW USER AND LOCKED FILE

    Dear Sir ..
I'm writing you because I would like to know if there's an utility, a software or something I can install or use on the application server in order to see which are the .fmx files locked on the application server and which user connected to the application server is locking the file.
can you help me with this problem?
    Thanks.

    Luca,
I don't know how that Tool would look like. All fmx'es are locked by the Operating user starting the server, mostly the oracle user.
However, you can use Enterprise Manager Control to see which users is logged on using your Forms. You have to activate it in the formsweb.cfg (em_control=1 or similar).

  • File locked by "another user"

    Hi,
I am supporting a small office with 8x Windows 7 Pro 64x machines running Office 2007. They have a 2008 R2 DC which is also file server.
Recently we started getting the message that files are locked by "another user". This does not happen all the time and the files are not in use by anyone when it occurs. If a file is used by someone else it gives the user name in the error message.
They can try opening the file one moment and it fails, try again and it works fine. Sometimes it takes repeated tries or they have to open the file from within Excel (they usually just double click the file to open). I'm not sure if it happens with Word as
well, as they are a quite Excel heavy office.
I did some investigation online and a lot of the threats I found were related to Windows Defender - which my client was using. So I got rid of that and installed McAfee, which I liked much better anyway. Unfortunately that did not help and my client reports
that the incidences of locked files are getting more and more, to the point where they are quite annoyed.
In all honesty, I don't know where to start to get on top of this thing and would appreciate some guidance ;)
    Thanks!
    Maike
Here a screenshot I got, a little small - sorry!

    Hi Maike,
Check if the following information would help:
There is a public blog on file locking issues (http://blogs.technet.com/b/the_microsoft_excel_support_team_blog/archive/2012/05/14/the-definitive-locked-file-post.aspx).
    I would suggest the following:
If you are seeing problems where the file is locked when double clicking from Windows Explorer, but the files open up correctly when opened in Excel or Word, do the following:
Turn off the Preview Pane, Details Pane and pop ups that show information about file and desktop items
This is a problem that has been reported to affect Windows 7 clients only, not Windows XP. The problem here may have something to do with the Windows Explorer in Windows 7. We are currently investigating this further and will post more information as it is
    available.
In a Windows Explorer window, do the following:
    1. Right click on the Start Button.
    2. Click 'Open Windows Explorer'.
    3. At the top left click Organize > Layout
    4. Uncheck Details Pane and Preview Pane.
    5. On a Windows menu, click on Tools > Folder Options. In the box that opens up, click on the View tab. Scroll down the list to“Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items” and clear the checkbox and then click OK.
If you are seeing issues where the wrong user name is showing up, there is a known bug on that and a fix:
In cases where the wrong user name is displayed in the file lock dialog
Sometimes where it says 'another user' it has the name of someone that didn't open the file or it has no name at all. Just a big ' ' where a name ought to be. Fear not, there is a fix for this problem. The flavor depends on
whether you have Excel 2010 or Excel 2007. The below KB Articles contain hotfixes that address several issues, not just the file locked issue. But in the dialog of the article you will see this as one of the problem descriptions:
Assume that you have an .xls file that is protected by Information Rights Management (IRM) on a network share. When you open the file in Excel 2007, a File In Use dialog box appears. However, the dialog box does not display the
correct name of the user who locked the file. Therefore, you cannot edit the file.
Understand that these fixes don't make the File in Use dialog go away, they just correct the problem of showing bogus user name information on the dialog itself.

  • The Windows SMB feature has file locking if multiple users are accessing the same file.  Does Snow Leopard Server File Sharing (AFP) provide similar features?

The Windows SMB feature has file locking if multiple users are accessing the same file.  Does File Sharing (AFP) on Snow Leopard Server provide similar services?

Were you ever able to solve this problem. I'm having similar issues since upgrading to snow leopard. Four macs connect to a Windows Server 2003 for shared files. Each user has full permissions & when we "get info" it shows read & write permissions. Two of the computers were running 10.4, two were running 10.5. Everything worked properly until upgrading to snow leopard. Some files let me copy, move, delete. Others either just hang up or we get a "no permission" error. Also getting a "pdf is in use" error, even when the file/folder doesn't contain a pdf. We had our IT rep check the server who said everything is in working order. They don't represent macs any longer but feel that it's a mac problem. I would have to agree since this problem only started after the upgrade, and the one machine that was not upgraded (still running 10.5.8) is not dealing with these problems.
Lastly, I would install 10.5 back on all of the computers if I could, but the leopard disk that came with one of the computers wouldn't work with the 2 machines running 10.4 and I didn't see it available at the apple store. I'll buy it if it's still available, but why wouldn't the disks that I have work?
    Thanks for any help
