4503 VTP Domain Name

I have a lab that consists of 2 - 4503 with SUPII running cat4000-i9s-mz.122-25.EWA14.bin as the core devices.  I have been practicing for the BCMSN test and was working with the different VTP confiuration options.  Here are the two issues that I am having.  One of which from reading other posts, I may have answered, but want to verify.
1- 4503 (Core_1) was configured as Server, but no VTP summary advertisements where being propegated to the other clients.  I verified the configuration multiple times to ensure accuracy.  All VTP Domain names where empty (factory default).  Not until I changed the VTP Domain name to Test, did I get propegation of vtp advertisements.  I have in the past been able to set up vtp on 3550, 3560 switches with no VTP Domain name and VTP worked as expected.  From reading, it appears the non propegation of vtp summary advertisements is the norm for 4503.  Can someone verity this.
2- How do you remove the VTP Domain name from the 4503?  I was able to remove the name from the other devices, 3550, 3560 by doing the following:
     del flash:vlan.dat
      wr er
      reload
On the 4503 I did the following:
      Switch#del /r /f cat4000_flash:vlan.dat
      reload
After reload, everything was back.  I also assumed when the 4503 was booting, it may have recieved the VTP information from the other 4503.  So I isolated both by disconnecting the uplinks to all other devices.  Still no go.  I have copied the start-up config to a tftp server, modified the config by removing all vtp information then copied back to running-config and this worked.  But it seems like there should be a better (easier) way of getting the vtp domain name removed on a 4503

Hi,
Deleting the vlan.dat from cisco switches will delete the complete vlan and vtp information from database and if you are not able to delete the domain name in these type of situation try configuring the some bogus name with mode as transperent mode so that other should not get impacted.

  • VTP domain name change

we have a number of campus LANs that for historical reasons, all have the same VTP domain name (even though they are seperate domains).
we'd like to change the domain names so that they are unique throughout the network. is the correct method of acheiving this:-
1 change VTP server to Transparent Mode
2 change VTP domain on 'server' to new domain
3 change all Client switches on campus to Transparent mode and change domain name to new one. change mode back to Client and then restart.
    any advice appreciated
    thanks
    andy

    Hi Andy,
I believe you have 2 VTP servers in your network with different VTP domain names and both VTP servers are playing role seperately for their VTP domains? Correct me if I am wrong?
If I am right you can go ahead with your plan and change your one VTP server which you waan sync with your other VTP server to transparent mode and then chage the VTP domain name then change it back to server mode so that you can also have 2 VTP servers in same VTP domain for any emmergency.
Talking about clients you can follow the same procedure as changing from client to transparent, then change the domain name and then back to client and you need not reload your switches.
Also remember while doing all these when you move your one VTP server and clients to different VTP domain name the VLAN information will get override by VLAN information persisting on your other VTP server and if this is what you want just go ahead.
Devang I did not undersood your BPDU stuff in this context can you please throw more light on the same.

  • VTP Domain Name and Transparent Mode

Can two switches connect via a trunk, one as a server and one as transparent and be in two different VTP domains respectively?

    Hi Guys,
    For the error messgae below:
Error Message DTP-5-DOMAINMISMATCH: Unable to perform trunk negotiation on port
[chars] because of VTP domain mismatch.
This you will got only when you have an automatic trunk negotiation using the DTP (dynamic trunking protocol) between the switches. The switches with different VTP domain name will not negotiate a trunk and a trunk will not form. But if you configure a trunk manually (not using DTP) then the trunk will work.

  • Impact of changing vtp server name

    Dear Sir,
Please let me know as below:-
    1.) How's vtp works?
2.) what's the impact chaging vtp server name?
    thanks.

Hostname doesn't have anything to do with the VTP domain name.
VTP runs in 3 modes - Server, Client and Transparent.
In server mode you could add VLANs and it gets propogated to all other servers and clients if the domain name is the same. In client mode the switch only gets VTP updates and uses it but you can't add vlans. In transparent mode the switch that gets the update from the server forwards the VTP update but it doesn't use itself.
When you say VTP server name I assume you must be taking about VTP domain name. If you change the domain of the VTP server and if that's the master server then you could isolate that device from the other switches and it may result in a network outage.

  • Vtp domains

we have two vtp domains in our hosp. I have a switch I would like to share between the two. Have some ports vlaned to a network defined on one vtp domain and others to the others to a network on the other vtp domain. This should work right? with the management ip only on one vtp domain network.

That should work OK provided none of the VLANs overlap. Make sure the switch is in VTP transparent and define the VLANs locally on it. Make sure the trunks only allow the VLANs that are relevant to the domain they are talking to. I would also change the VTP domain name so that it matches neither existing name, just for safety.

  • VTP domain disconnect

    Hi All.
I have Cisco LMS 3.2.1 at a Customer site, he was checking discrepancies and received an "VTP disconnect message".
The network has a VTP server which is 6509 switch connected via Trunk to all switches.
Can anyone throw me a direction in which we can look here?

VTP doesn't know propagate advertisements outside the vtp domain. It, rather maintains information consistency between the switches in the same vtp domain through the trunk links.
Configuring different vtp domain is the same as isolating each switch in a domain.
    PS:
"You can use VTP to manage VLANs 1 to 1005 in your network. (Note that VTP does not support
    VLANs 1025 to 4094.)
When you make a change to the VLAN configuration on a VTP server, the change is propagated to all
switches in the VTP domain. VTP advertisements are transmitted out all trunk connections, including
Inter-Switch Link (ISL), IEEE 802.1Q, IEEE 802.10, and ATM LAN Emulation (LANE).
VTP servers advertise their VLAN configuration to other switches in the same VTP domain and
synchronize their VLAN configuration with other switches based on advertisements received over
trunk links. VTP server is the default mode.
Each switch in the VTP domain sends periodic advertisements out each trunk port to a reserved multicast
address. VTP advertisements are received by neighboring switches (in the same domain), which update their VTP and VLAN
    configurations as necessary.
The following global configuration information is distributed in VTP advertisements:
    • VLAN IDs (ISL and 802.1Q)
    • Emulated LAN names (for ATM LANE)
    • 802.10 SAID values (FDDI)
    • VTP domain name
    • VTP configuration revision number
    • VLAN configuration, including the maximum transmission unit (MTU) size for each VLAN

  • Vtp domain info in startup????

Cisco sent my client a replacement switch. Event though my client sent the startup config to the new switch it still defaults to Server and has no domain info. Is this because Client mode VTP info is volatile? The startup config of the Server will retain VTP info???????
But the startup of the Client mode will not???????? We are now concerned for our VTP info in the event of hardware failures of disasters. I instructed my client to send a running config to the new switch and see what shakes.

More than likely, you are using a switch like the 2950, 3550, etc. that holds its VTP information in a vlan.dat file. This file is separate from the startup-config file. Just modify the VTP domain name and add the VTP password (you do have one right?). The switch should get vlan information across its trunk ports (assuming the trunks are up and hard-coded on). The VTP mode can be changed before or after this happens.
BTW, since the VTP information is stored in the vlan.dat file, when you erase the startup config and reload the switch, the VTP domain and mode will still be there (until you delete the vlan.dat file and reload).

  • VTP domain change

    Hi,
Our network runs in one VTP domain. All switches are Cat6500 (ISO) sup2 or sup720. All is working in Layer 2.
We are using vlans above 1000 which cannot be propagated by VTP and needs to be configured by hand on every switch. We changed the VTP domain so every 6500 switch was its own VTP domain and then trouble started ... something strange occured. The MAC addresses were not propagated to other switches in vlan (layer 2 only vlan). Putting static entries did not solve the problem. The MAC addresses in the same VLAN were only propagated from access1(VTP access1) to core1(VTP core1),but not to the access2 (VTP access2). Same thing the other way.
On switches that we didnt change vtp, everything worked fine. After couple of hours trying to solve the problem, I changed back to same VTP domain for all switches and MACs starts propagate.
What was cousing this problem ?
    Thanks and regards:
    Michal

What is the way to set a null domain name ?

    Hi Friend,
The easiest way is to give it some other domain name which does not exist in your network if you do not want your switch to participate in any VTP domain which exist in your network.
Switch default is in no-management-domain state.
After the switch leaves the no-management-domain state, it can not be configured to re-enter it until you clear the NVRAM and reload the software.
So if you completely want to get rid of it clear NVRAM and reload the software.

  • VTP transparent mode and using VTP domain

                       Hi all,
Need to ask question when  using VTP transparent mode is it good idea to use VTP domain name and password?
I know for switches in transparent mode they act as independent of each other.
So need to know why we should use vtp domain  and password with transparent mode?
    thanks
    mahesh

    Mahesh,
I know this 2 years later, but it will help others who will come across this. If you have a Transparent switch mixed with Server and Clients switches. This is your concern....... If you do not put the Transparent switch in the same domain, then it will not forward VLAN changes to other swithces.
    So Sw1(Server-CCIE Domain) <-------> Sw2(Transparent-CCIE Domain)  <-------> Sw3(Client-CCIE Domain)
The above will work because the Transparent switch is in the same domain. This means that SW3 will get any Vlan changes that are done on SW1.
Now lets look at it the other way.........
    Sw1(Server-CCIE Domain) <-------> Sw2(Transparent-Null Domain)  <-------> Sw3(Client-CCIE Domain)
Two things are going to happen here
    1) The transparent switch is not on same domain, so SW3 will never get any updates when changes to Vlans are done on SW1. So if I add one vlan to SW1, and that make the Configuration Revision increase to the value of 10, that means SW3's Revision will still be 9, and will remain that way until the issue is corrected.
    2) If you are dynamically negotiating trunks, this will never happen due to the mismatch domains. Meaning that your trunks will never come up because you did not put your Transparent switch in the same domain.

  • Mls rp vtp domain

    Hi Experts
i need to know about the redundancy of the vtp domain:mls rp vtp domain name.if i have 2 distribution do i need to do this command on the 2 dis?
    10xs for ur reply

    Hello,
as I understand it, if your switches both participate in a VTP domain, the command is indeed required on both MLS RP enabled interfaces. The MLS interfaces are part of the VTP domain, just as any other VTP client or server switches.

  • Will 2 routers running in server mode with no vtp domain defined conflict with each other when connecting over layer 2 sonet?

Our remote site has a 3845 router running MPLS to connect back to our other 3845 locally. The ISP has provided us a layer 2 sonet connection with no other configurations necessary with the exception of configuring the layer 2 portion on our side. Both of these 3845 routers are in "server mode" with "no vtp domain" specified. Will this cause an issue/conflict when the remote router bypasses the MPLS for the faster 100MB layer 2 connection?

    Jon,
Excellent answer. Our two 3845 routers are about 400 miles away and we're trying to bring up a layer 2 100MB sonet connection over fiber connected to the GIG0/1 port on each router. I was worried that essentially having these 2 routers back to back over layer 2 may cause issues since our remote site has a higher revision number than our local site. It appears since we're configuring an ip address on each router and then adding the network to ospf this shouldn't conflict with our 2 routers. Below is how each router VTP is configured with the exception our remote site has 1 extra VLAN and a higher revision number.
    VTP Version                     : 2
    Configuration Revision          : 0

  • Vtp version 2 and vtp domain

    switchA ---- B ---- C
    3 switches connected one-by-one
    A version2 server domain:cisco
    B version2 transparent domain:test
    C version2 client domain:cisco
according to the documentation,we can conclude that C will learn vlan information from A. but the test is fail.
    why ?
"Version-Dependent Transparent Mode-In VTP version 1, a VTP transparent switch inspects VTP
messages for the domain name and version and forwards a message only if the version and domain
name match. Because VTP version 2 supports only one domain, it forwards VTP messages in
transparent mode without inspecting the version and domain name."

The enhancements in VTP Version 2 are:
    Password
    Pruning
    & support for token rings.
Config revision is same for v1, v2 & v3. though in version 3 its called database revision number.
If devices on same domain share vtp messages, how is it decided which message is the more recent & whether to update the database or not. So config revision plays a major role in synchronisation of database.
In your case, transparent switch is in a separate domain. So if it receives a message with different domain name in its header, switch B should reject because domain names doesnt match.
As far as config revision, here is how it works:
Each VTP instance is associated with a database revision number. The database revision number is incremented when the value of the database that is covered by the advertised checksum is modified.
When a device receives a VTP advertisement from the same primary server for an instance in the same domain, the following occurs:
•If the database revision number in the advertisement is less than that of the receiving device, the advertisement is ignored and a summary advertisement with the current revision number is transmitted on the trunk on which the original advertisement was received.
•If the database revision number in the advertisement is the same as that of the receiving device, the following occurs:
-If the checksum of the advertisement is exactly the same as the checksum of the current configuration known to the device, then no action is taken.
-If the checksum of the advertisement is not exactly the same as the checksum of the current configuration known to the device, the device's configuration is unaffected, but the device indicates to the database manager that a configuration error condition has occurred.
•If the database revision number in the advertisement is greater than that of the receiving device, and the advertisement's checksum and configuration information match, the receiving switch requests the exact subset of databases for which it is not up to date.
    Happy Diwali.

  • Is it possible to restrict the ability to e-mail a pdf outside a specific domain name?

    Hello,
I am trying to find a solution to a friends problem.  She has a quarterly publication that she sends out to big banks and financial institutions.  Recently she has had some problems with press leaks.  I am trying to find some security options for her however the task is difficult. Because these institutions have firewalls I am not sure encrypting or tracking is the right answer because the publication might not make it through. She wants users to be able to print the publication because many of the readers are older and prefer to read during their commute and at home.  Essentially I am looking for any ways to make readers think twice about sharing the information. I thought if I could restrict e-mail to a specific domain name that would help this way users can only e-mail within their specific company.  If any one has any suggestions please feel free to share.

Thank you Todd, I was able to get it to work but I do have a few more questions...
    1) When I tested this, at the top of the message, before any of the text I created, this showed up: This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------040406040801080102080500 Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
