5.0.4 upgrade toasts m2v file associations

I have a problem with m2v files that when I try to look at them in Finder the window closes and DVD Studio is unable to use them. This happened after upgrading to 5.04. I was able to change ONE m2v file to Quicktime but even checking "Apply to All" and rebooting didn't work. When I right click the file the default for m2v is now "Droplet" which I can't get rid of. Deleting Finder prefs didn't help. I have a back-up drive which still has FCP5.02 and Compressor 2.0. I tried encoding with it-no problem. No file association problem either so it appears THE 5.04 AND 2.01 "UPGRADE" have a problem. Now how to solve it on my original drive??? ALL HELP APPRECIATED.

Had this very same issue when I updated my G4 tower to 5.0.3 - all my m2v file associations in the Finder were hosed and Compressor would not launch (it would bounce once in the dock and then... nothing).
I went to the Final Cut Pro Updates page and, after going thru the Apple ID and Serial Number stuff, downloaded only the Compressor 2.0.1 package.
After installing from the package, Compressor worked, though I had to restore my file associations manually.
All that did take me about 15-20 minutes though.

  • Reader Upgrade hosed my file association

Adobe Professional 8 was on system with Reader 7, upgraded to reader 8.1.2 now I can't go back and associate my PDF files to Professional.
I get to choose from Distiller or Reader for file association. How do I get Professional to be my default app without re installing it?
Note: The standard re associate file doesn't work, when I point to the exe either the box is blank to check that I always want to open with this file or after clicking on the Acrobat.exe it does not populate in the programs list for the check box to save it to Acrobat.. instead it just re saves it to open with reader

Thanks so much for the speedy response!
Apologies, I left out key details.
pdf files on my machine now do not show as pdf icons (red adobe), but rather white bordered rectangles with mini icons inside (sorry, no idea what these are called) - see attached screen shot.
So when I click on them I get the message that windows doesnt recognise the file format and asks me to browse to an application to open with.
    Does this help clarify issue?
BTW - to clarify; if i was to remove and redownload as you suggest, you are suggesting to download from the link below - correct?

Yes - you can do so with the new association feature in Java Web Start 1.5
Basically you specific the file ext and/or mime-type that you want to associate with in the jnlp file; and when javawebstart launch the application, it will prompt you to see if you want to create the association.
Refer to the JNLP spec changes in Java Web Start 1.5 for more details:
    http://jcp.org/aboutJava/communityprocess/maintenance/jsr056/jnlp_spec.html#4756982
You can download J2SE 1.5-beta (which includes javawebstart) now and give it a try!

At the very least, try repairing permissions with the Disk Utility and perhaps running DiskWarrior.

  • ITunes upgrade - now forces mp3 file association to itunes

Older versions of iTunes would allow me to keep .mp3 file association pointing to winamp, but the latest version of itunes "steals" the mp3 file association back everytime it starts up. Winamp has a "reset file association at startup" checkbox in it's preferences, but I can't find anything like that in itunes. Am I missing something, or is there some other way to get iTunes to not steal this file association whenever it starts. Or is there a way to uninstall this latest upgrade?

Find one of your MP3 files in Windows Explorer and right click on it and select Open with>>Choose Program.
On this dialogue, tick "Always use selected brogram to open this kind of file", then select Winamp and click OK.

  • Missing Icons, unable to set file association properly after upgrade to CS6

I am working with a client that had CS3 on Windows XP and upgraded to CS 5.5, and now has upgraded that to CS6. Her file associations were all set back to CS3, even though it shows that CS3 is uninstalled. I manually changed them and it will open the INDesign files but I cannot get icons to show for anything. I can see the icons in the shell folder and I can pick one but it will not show in Windows. Is there a way to clean up her system easily and make CS6 the default Adobe - and make sure none of the others have lingering file associations or references? I dont think they uninstalled all the way.

There is no easy way. you will have to clean out all file associations and reinstate them manually. You are simply exceeding the context handlers, a limitation in the operating system itself and usualyl a sign of too many programs trying to link their actions to a file association liek right-click menu entries for compression tools, virus scanners, viewers etc.

  • Since the upgrade to lightroom CC I have lost my file associations and cannot restore it

Can anyone advise how to restore my LR file associations. I had to uninstall lightroom 5 as it always opened instaed of the new version. Now I cannot associate JPG or NEF files with lightroom, it will not link to it despite selecting the executable.

I don't have LR associated with any type of file extension. Not one file type extension has Lightroom associated with it and I have both LR 5 and 6 installed.
All image type files are associated with Photoshop or the Windows image viewer (whatever MS calls it), not LR.
Actually LR is not for Opening image file unless you have already imported them into the catalog. I guess if you wanted to you could associate those file types to LR so when they are double clicked the Import dialog window open so you can import them into LR. But AFAIK that isn't the norm. YMMV

    1. when i start mc it sorts files in a confusing (for me) way tuxcmd shows me first the "dot" directories, next the "not dot" directories , next the "dot" files and finally the files, all in alphabetic order. how to achieve that sorting in mc?
    2. in tuxcmd i have the options to sort (maintaining the number 1 item sort fashion) by date (newest files first) by name, by extension. how to do this in mc?
    3. in tuxcmd i add to it a lot of file associations to my common use files, like when i right click a media file, i have my programs like open with mplayer, xine, vlc, ffmpeg -i (shows me info about the file), etc. what file or what i need to do to have file associations like that in mc? so i can just double click the file and it opens with his associated program?

  • File Associations in Bridge

I've installed and activated Photoshop CS6 (64-bit, Windows 7).  The file associations in Bridge are all blown, defaulting either to "none" or IE Explorer.  When I try to open a file from Bridge, it opens in Windows Live Photo Gallery, and right-clicking does not return Photoshop as one of the choices.  This occurs with Raw files as well as jpegs and tiffs.  This has never happened to me with CS4 or CS5, nor with the CS6 Beta that I had been using (and uninstalled before installing CS6).  Do I have to manually re-set all of the file associations?  How does Bridge not recognize the program of which it is a sub-program?

Thanks for the response.  I did uninstall CS5 after installing CS6, but it still seems illogical that Bridge wouldn't default to Photoshop for any file types.  I also tried resetting to "default" settings, and that just changed the few I had fixed back to "none".  I tried your suggestion for the three resets, and that did not improve the situation.  Should I re-install the whole program? (This was an upgrade package:  Does CS5 need to be installed for me to do that?).
    Thanks again.

  • Adobe CS6 file associations are all messed up

    Many of CS6 file association extensions wont open;
After installing CS6 many of the previous extensions .psd .prproj .ai, I found broken and Windows 7 (64bit) would ask what program to open it with.
It would not give me the option to chose the obvious. So, I selected Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations and select Photoshop cs6 .exe and it would not assign it.
    Same with several other files.
Even files I made fresh from CS6 photoshop(64) it wont select or give option to open with the program it was made with. I have to open the program first and select the file from inside the program.
Now Adobe Bridge CS6 shows all the files with a visual preview but when I select the file it says "windows cannot find 'C:\program file\adobe\adobe cs5 (64 bit)\photoshop.exe' make sure you typed the name correctly, then try again.
Somehow I have to unlink the old extensions because cs5 is gone but I can't seem to change the associations until whatever residual cs5 registry ghost still lives in my machine.
I have googled the problem and a lot of people are having this problem but no real fixes seem apparent or they are insanely drastic like wiping the whole drive and re-installing windows.
I see that this has happened before with other upgrades on the forums i.e. cs4 to cs5 years back.
This is my 6th upgrade and I gave adobe thousands and thousands of dollars and why is this problem not getting addressed when other been complaining about years ago and still not a viable solution is given.

I used the CS Cleaner (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html) and followed the steps its really easy.. but ur gonna have to re install you Creative Suite   all u do for the cleaner is open it up then select english (e) ->enter->Agree (Y)->enter->All (1) (which is the first option for a full clean i guess)->enter->Product Number its just basically asking you to input your choice number again (1)->enter and should tell u its all done then after u install CS again go to start-> default programs->associate file type->.psd for example->double click it and select Photoshop even though its probably already selected >.< but just do it again cuz it will refresh all the files on the coputer and whala you should c the correct file dysplay Heres pictures of my files before and after as proof idk if u managed to fix it but i recently got CS6 and drove me nuts tht there wasnt enough info on the web about this simple issue lol so i will post to help ppl in need !!

  • How to restore file associations in Bridge CS5?

    Hi
Some time ago I somehow lost file associations in Adobe Bridge CS5. Now when I doubleclick a RAW file (Canon .CR2 file) I get Firefox, when I doubleclick a JPG I get FastStone and when I doubleclick a PSD file nothing happens at all. Also Photoshop is not in the options I get by right-clicking photos and choosing "Open with...".
I have tried [ Edit -> Preferences... -> File Type Associations -> Reset to Default Associations ] , but that didn't help.
Also when I look in the File Type Association dialog, my file types are set to "Explorer Settings", and Photoshop is not among the other options. I don't know how this uses to be (if associations are defined in Bridge or it uses Explorer/Windows settings?), but how do I easily recreate original setup from when I installed Photoshop?

    Hi Neil
Thanks for the answer. I'm aware I can manually setup associations one-by-one for all file types I need, but just hoped there was some easier way. I mean there's a lot of file types associated in either windows/explorer or directly in Bridge. Some that I might not know I need tomorrow.  Two things I have found out since I asked the question:
    1) The problem is probably caused by uninstalling my old CS4 after I had installed CS5. It looks like somebody experienced a similar problem by uninstalling CS3 after the installation of CS4: http://forums.adobe.com/message/1899159#1899159. So apparently a bug Adobe hasn't fixed even though it was in previous version too!? :-( I think it is only natural to keep your old version installed for some time when installing an upgrade. Just to make sure the new version works well before you uninstall the previous (And I have previous had the problem that a new version of Photoshop had a habit of freezing on my PC - or some other error I don't remember -  until Adobe released an update. So there's a reason for my behavior).
    2) I have installed a second copy of CS5 now on my secondary portable PC, and are using this to make a similar setup regarding file associations in windows/explorer and Bridge. All associations for Photoshop was lost on my primary PC, and God... there's a lot of file associations to setup again... May I recommend Adobe (if reading this) to fix this bug and/or make a script to automatically recover all associations in case of loss!
    /Stig

  • DVD Movie is "lighter" than the M2v File - ?????

    Hello Board,
    I need help . . . . again!
I used the NTSC monitor to color and export the my short film and it looked FINE. Many of the scenes were dimmed (darkened Intentionally) intentionally to create and omnious effect.
I had to take the monitor back but everything seemed fine. I exported the project via Compressor - Best - 90 minute setting.
I watched the M2V on the computer and it looked great, so I imported the M2V into DVD pro and created a very basic DVD.
I burned the DVD pro project to DVD using Toast Titanium 6.
Now here's the twist. When I watched the DVD on TV, the images were significally ligter than in the M2V file and the DVD SP viewer.
I said ok, let me put the DVD into the computer and see if it looks different on the computer LCD and it did not, it was still lighter.
I then did a side by side comparison - with the M2V screen up on the left and the Mac DVD player screen up on the right. I went to the same frame in both and behold, the DVD version is noticable ligher. Things that are concealed by Shadow in the M2V can be seen in the DVD version.
Is it possible that something in the burn process did this. Or could it be that I saved the file a certain way in DVD SP and that did it?
I don't think it's an issue with Compressor, because why didn;t the M2V file look light on the computer.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lin

It's probably not a problem with Toast or DVD SP. It's the same old display and TV calibration issue that many complain about. Try this with Apple's DVD Player -- switch to an NTSC display profile and see what the DVD looks like then. However, the latter is not a "fix," just an example of how display gamma and calibration can affect results.
I'd suggest that Lin review the following tutorials on color and brightness adjustments:
    http://www.signvideo.com/dv-black-levels-dvd-authoring-mpeg-2-part-1.htm
