5.0 software requires phone to be on wireless??? What does that MEAN?

Hi - I jsut downloaded the software update for Desktop Manager and it's telling me that my phone now has to be on a wireless network in order to make calls etc, but doesn't tell me what that means or how it might impact performance, etc. Anyone know where I can find more info? Thanks!

Looking at my phone's screen, there is now an icon at top right that was not there before - it looks like a rifle sight with three waves emanating from it, which I am assuming tells me I am now connected to a wireless network.
Nope, that icon is indicating that you have GPS enabled on the device.

1. I travel all over the country for my job, often to pretty remote areas. Can I expect better or worse service with the wireless? Or does it exist more as a back-up to the mobile network?
2. Is this somehow going to cost me more (e.g. by using "data" minutes instead of "talk" minutes)?
1. Wireless Network = Mobile Network. Same thing, different terminology.
You'll have the very same network connections as before.
2. Data is Data, Talk is Talk. They are not the same. When you place a call, that is Talk minutes.
When you use SMS texting, that is SMS.
When you use the internet browser, BBMessenger, mapping, etc., that is data.
