600EX RT dual masters?

I was using 4 600EXs last night for the first time. My normal setup is two camera each with a speedlight set as master and two slave flashes on stands. In the past I've used Radiopoppers and have had no problem with each camera's flash being a master. I immediately notieced with the 600EX though that which ever one was turned on first as master it gets the green link light and the second one gets the yellow problem link light.
Does anyone know if there can only ever be one master with the 600EX?
I'm using 5Dmk2's and not mk3's. I know the group function might be different but that doesn't work on the mk2. So I'm using the standard ol' master/slave functionality. Would you be able to set up dual masters in the group function using a mk3?
Any help apprciated. This is a deal breaker for me. I run it this way so I can one long camera one wide and with both masters set the same can get nearly any shot at any moment in the room. Will be difficult/impossible to change my working style because of this. Too bad too because I really like the light/power or the 600EX.

Group mode is so fun to use, it's become my default solution. I did a shoot at the weekend, and used a pair of 600EX-RTs in the background of the picture aimed at the camera, with a main light in E-TTL up front in a softbox. I can increase or raise the power of the back lights or switch them on/off all from the ST-E3. While you can do the manual and E-TTL trick with the old pulsed light system, you need to set manual and power level on each manual flash, this means more walking round making changes and less flow in the shoot.
I find that manual is the way to go when aiming flashes back at the camera.
I've used a 5d2, but never been a fan of the 5d1/5d2. I tended to use 7d/1d cameras instead, but when 5d3 came out I bought one of the first I could get. To me it's a way better all-round capable camera than the old 5d2. Image quality is a little better but the AF is way better. I have shot kickboxing from the ringside with a 50mm f/1.2L and no flash at ISO 6400 and it works great. I've also shot world rally cars in the dust of Finland in the summer, no problems.
So if you're close to thinking the 5D3 is for you then group mode is a real nice feature to get (also works on EOS 650D/T4i, 1D X and EOS M) and the rest of the camera performance, AF, drive speed, sealing is a step forward too. I've found that with the 5d3 I do less focus and recompose and instead use the rear joystick to move AF points around the frame and shoot that way - the AF is so much more capable. Just set it to only allow you to use the cross-type points.

I agree! I attended Syl's Speedliter's Intensive in November 2012 in Houston, Texas, and repeated in Austin, Texas in May 2013. Syl is a wonderful teacher, and I would like to attend one of his longer workshops in the future.
Syl's book on Speedliting pre-dates the 600EX-RT, but the principles of lighting remain the same, and his blog and on-line tutorials are an excellent way to stay up-to-date on the newest technology.

If you're planning to use linux occasionally (Ubuntu for example) and you don't want to risk losing the One Key Recovery functionality, try to install Ubuntu via Wubi as this doesn't repartition your HDD but creates a virtual disk on your current OS.

From EncoreCS3 DVD-9 VIDEO_TS folder to replication house via DDP (mastering steps in GEAR etc.)

Ok, the "solution" or steps I'm trying to provide here is not complete, just the way I see it now. We will do it this way as we want to deliver the DVD-9 dual layer DDP master to the replication house. The intention is that this should be corrected or fullfilled in order so that in the end we have a proper guide for everyone here, so people, read this, and share you info and if there is anything to be corrected or tips for making things work better.
Here we go:
Let's assume we have created successfully a VIDEO_TS folder from Encore CS3, meaning we have not set a layer break yet, but otherwise we have a working product.
STEP 1. SET THE LAYER BREAK IN GEAR Mastering Edition, guide http://www.gearsoftware.com/howtoguides/dvdvideobreakpoint.cfm
Possible problems: non-seamless cells don't exist in the layer break window
Possible solution: Use PGCEdit to change the cell type from seamless to non-seamless. This happens by opening the VIDEO_TS folder with PGCEdit and then double clicking on the VTS which holds the layer break point "window" (the VTS you chose in GEAR). Then you deselect the seamless joint checkbox in the cell (making it non-seamsless) you want to use as the layer break. Then you press OK and save the DVD. After that you create a new project in GEAR, do the layerbreak calculations based on the newly changed VIDEO_TS (with the non-seamless cell) and re-open the selected VTS_xx_0.IFO now in IFOEdit where you can now find the a proper non-seamless cell address for the layer break. Now you should be able to finish setting the non-seamless layer break in GEAR.
Question: Do we have to and do we need to have the When saving, leave at least 32K of space between IFO and BUP" from the Options to be on when we do this in seamless joint change and save the dvd in PGCedit?
STEP 2. CREATE DDP IMAGE FROM THE PROJECT, guide: http://www.gearsoftware.com/howtoguides/dvdvideotoddp.cfm
STEP 3. TEST THE DDP IMAGE BY BURNING IT ON DVD-R DVD-9
First you need to restore the DDP Image you just created, guide http://www.gearsoftware.com/howtoguides/restoreddpimage.cfm
Burn the restored VIDEO_TS folder to DVD-9 with GEAR, guide

-If the product looks good and the layer break makes you satisfied, deliver the DDP image to replication factory for replication.

The aim would be in the end having a guide which says all the required things in order to achieve a successfull DVD-9 project.

In Multiple Angles (unsupported in Encore anyway) Seamless means there is no pause in playback when switching between angles. That is all.
So, I really thought the seamless/non-seamless would have affect on the actually layer switching when playing the DVD, so that it might affect the slight layer switch pause time. It's just that the gear guide says that you need to find a non-seamless break in the IFOedit, and that's it, so I guess it is a bit missleading there in that GEAR guide. But, I'm glad you cleared this out that this only has to do something with the multiangle views.

Ok, so unless you use PGCEdit, this should be already ok in your project, right? But if you use PGCEdit for something like changing the seamless joint for multiple angles to your VIDEO_TS folder, this selection should be always on in PGCEdit.

Yeah, luckily this seems to be fixed now in the GEAR guide calculator.
Another way I've found that is useful what comes to the selecting the layer break from the layer break "window" for your project is this:
In order to know exactly where the cell starts in your video, you can use IMGBurn to preview the cells, so that you can choose the most suitable cell from the "layer break window". This means following the SET THE LAYER BREAK IN GEAR Mastering Edition guide to the point where you have found out the "layer break window". Then when going to the IFOedit you can see the cells that fall in to this window. Mark them down in your notepad and open the VIDEO_TS in IMGBurn, set the BUILD mode, choose to burn the VIDEO_TS folder and proceed the workflow ahead until you get to the set the layer break window. In this window you can preview the cells of the project, being able to see the videos of the cells. Go through the cells you marked in the IFOedit and find the cell that starts in the least disturbing place where the possible pause might occur during the moment when your dvd player changes the layer. When you've chose your cell, cancel the process and continue what you were doing in the GEAR layer break guide.
If there are any other methods for this test purpose, or if there is something I'm missing, please share?
Question about choosing the layer break cell: Is it the fact that no matter how you have bitcalculated your project size when building it in Encore, the layer break window that the GEAR spreadsheet provides you, doesn't take this into account at all? Meaning, if you choose the biggest cell number from the layer break window to be the layer break cell, it will go over the 4% overhead at the outer layer edge? If this is the case, you shouldn't use the last cells from the layer break window at all? And should we always try to choose the cell with the smallest number no matter what (in order to make the layer break as far from the layer's outer edge)?

Dual layer DVD discs

I have a few backup discs burned dual layer in OSX with archive material - they read just fine in OSX.
When I boot into XP via Bootcamp, the discs are not read and are ejected.
Anyone come across this or got a suggested set of drivers for the DVD drive that will allow the drive to be fully functional in XP ?

Is it possible the discs were mastered in an HFS only format? In Toast, the default is Mac & PC, but it can be set to Mac Only, in which case the PC wouldn't read them without something like MacDrive for the PC. I had all kinds of problems with MacDrive 7, so I reverted to MacDrive 6.08 in XP.
If they were burned as UDF, ISO 9660, or from the Mac Finder... they should be readable. I don't think there is anything in the driver that would prevent them from being read other than the format of the disc.

Backup to Vault Fails Before Switching From Copying Masters to Next Step

My backup to a Vault in Aperture 3 has failed.
I have successfully upgraded to Aperture 3 from Aperture 2. Everything works well, except backing up to a Vault. I have attempted to save the entire library to two different drives - one internal and one external, both empty and tested as OK in the Disk Utility. The backups - multiple times - simply stopped at the same place. The usual sequence is copying masters and then versions, but the full backups never went beyond copying masters. I’ve set up additional libraries of individual projects, and those libraries backed up to vaults with no problem. I had no problems with saving to a Vault with the Aperture 2 library.
I’m using a Mac Pro with Snow Leopard (10.6.2), 2x2.66 Dual-Core Intel Xeons, and 10gb of memory. There are four internal drives, and two external drives connected by a firewire connection. The computer and drives are unchanged through the transition to Aperture 3.
Any suggestions?

I Have exact the same problem.
Originally updated a 150 GB Library from 2.1.4 to Ap 3; Backing up to a NAS based Vault stops after doing the masters.
I ended in reinstalling Ap 3, and Creating a new library from scratch. Reimporting the upgraded library worked fine, but Vault freezes like before.
Creating gain a new library and Importing original masters and versions step by step. After every import Vault backup works until now (60% done).
I m curious wether it will work when I m finished.
All my keywording etc. will be gone then !

Copying Presets and Dual Screens

Hi there,
I am running a small home studio and have just hooked up another monitor to my imac.
First question, how do I put the mixer in a separate window on the second screen. I want it so I can have the arrange page on the main screen and then the mixer on the other as they're the main ones I use.
Secondly, I am recording a 6 track EP for my band, I have set up all the tracks ready for the first song but when I come to mix and master them at the end how can I apply all the same EQ settings, effects, levels and such to every song if they are seperate logic files?

Start here. Go ahead and mix then bounce your songs (to 24 bit aif). Load a Logic Mastering Template. Drag your tracks in serially (in a row) or parallel (side by side, after setting up enough tracks - 6 in your case).
I often do the parallel method so I can quickly mute/unmute for fast comparisons of overall level and energy.
Bounce to 16 bit with dithering to burn disks with the files. (I use Bias Peak for assembling the disk image.)
There are many ways to skin this cat. Many.
Can't help you with dual monitors.

DVD Mastering to DLT in CS6?

I ran into a very interesting problem today with the Adobe Production Premium CS6 upgrade from CS5.5 I installed last week!!
Each month we do a DVD video magazine and I usually author to DVD using Encore and then write a DPP image to DLT tape for the replicator. However this time Encore did not give me a "DVD Master" option in the drop down list. Selecting "System Info" from the "Help" menu showed that it detected the Compaq DLT4000 drive that is connected to my system, but there was no option to write a DVD master to the tape drive. This all worked correctly under CS5.5 previous to this (yes, I run Encore with admin privileges so that it can see the tape drive).
So I called Adobe and they told me that even though I had just upgraded to CS6 from CS5.5 that I would have to pay for tech support (it was done as ESD thru one of my regular video vendors).
So what's the deal? Doesn't Encore CS6 support writing DVD Masters to DLT tape? And don't I get at least the normal 90 days of support from Adobe as a end-user, though the only way to upgrade to CS6 was via ESD?

Hi! Thanks for the reply and the show of solidarity on this issue. For me, the DLT tape issue affects my deliverables. The companies I work for archive master tape copies of all the DVDs I author, so uploading or even a flash drive will not work (not archivable)!
In the past we've tried DVD-R media for masters but they did not work out, there are too many read errors and it just gets worse as the discs get older. I have no other option with these customers, DLT tapes are what they require me to deliver.
I've recently switched over to using DLT IV tapes. Most replication facilities use DLT4000 or better DLT drives and are happy to use DLT IV tapes written in 20/40 mode. DLT tapes are rated for over 500,000 passes (which translates to ~1000 full tape read/write cycles), so I use recertified tapes if that's the only thing I can get my hands on. Even a moderately used DLT retains it's archival properties over the specified life of the tape, and recertification ensures that any weak parts of the tape are mapped out of use (which, BTW, can be a problem on new tapes, parts of the magnetic media can fail after being written for the first time, stressing the error correction system of DLT sometimes to the point of failure, so you want to certify new tapes anyways to prevent this).
As I've mentioned before, you can write an ISO file and then use an older version of Encore to master it to DLT. Problem is this only works on single layer DVDs and not for dual-layer projects (or so my testing has revealed). I really need for Adobe to re-enable the "DVD Master" option since Encore is already able to see the DLT drive when it's been turned on and DLT support is already there in the software.

Moving Masters from Album to Album does not actually change reference.

Im not sure if this problem has been addressed, or if I'm the only one experiencing it. I have moved masters from one project (ex. Pictures Project) to another project (Trips Project). The moved masters, in the metadata view, still show its master location in the Pictures project. I have seperated these photos into their own albums for each city visited, so when I click on the album, the images show up. But if I click on the Trips project, it does not think there are any images in the project and nothing shows up. Is anyone else having this problem?

I wish aperture would realize that the images have been relocated and add them into the project it is now associated with.
This is actually a feature because Albums can contain images from more than one Project. This is really a very useful way to group images, and I wouldn't want to see it changed. There's a great article about the Library structure here:

Please allow D-L mastering to DVD

It would be great if we could master a dual layer DVD for replication directly to 2 DVD's in addition to DLT. The cost of DLT is ridiculous for those of us that don't develop dvd's full time (occasionally needed).
The DVD replicators we use allow submission by DVD.

You need either GEAR Pro Mastering Edition, or else DVD After Edit.
GPME is for Windows machines, DVDAE is for Macintosh.
DLT costs are actually not that high - DLT Type III or Type III XT is the cheapest type , and will be acceptable to all replication companies.
(AKA DLT2000) you can pick up the drives for around £200 - £300, and tapes are around £30 each. All far cheaper in the USA right now though.
DLT is still the safest way to get data to replication because of the serious error correction used.
DDP-DVD or CMF-DVD is the next best (but as with all written media based on dyes, it is stupidly easy to get a bad burn)
Playable discs are the worst possible way to go.
This would be a great enhancement for Encore - and as Blu Ray right now cannot be replicated due to the lack of a DDP module, I suspect it is on the way. It will increase the cost noticeably though - the licenses required are far from cheap.

Dual Layer issue

I have created a DVD and ran all tests and passed. I transcoded for the 8.5 Dual layer disc and it burned and worked great. I ran out of DL and went and pruchased more. I wasn't able to reburn the project for a few days...had to modify and work and well I was busy. Anyway...now all of a sudden Encore2.0 doesn't recognize my DL discs...when I build project...the option to actual start writing the disc is not one that I can select. Suggestions?

This is my opinion, arrived at after talking extensively with my preferred replication company.
Others may be different.
When you write a DVD-Video disc, you're making a very specialised piece of software where every error is critical & may result in an unplayable master, or worse still a master with errors.
Written media is also much less reflective compared to pressed media. This means that the players error correction has to work even harder.
Dual Layer discs have much reduced reflectivity from the inner layer. Obviously because it has to focus

the upper layer to read the data.
The first thing the factory are going to do when they recieve your master on DVD-R as a DVD-Video movie is turn it into a DDP image anyway, so that they can make the Glass Master and stampers. So why not take that step yourself, and send them a DDP image - it's what you write when you make a DLT tape. Best of all, it has it's own internal error correction (I think - but may be mistaken - that it uses CRC error correction) so the integrity of your data is guaranteed. You can even write this data back to HDD (even off a DLT tape) and makea playable disc from it, to confirm that your master is good (if you can be bothered or don't trust the method) before you send it.
Most serious replication companies would prefer (Warners US certainly do, (and recently, I had to deliver to Warners and they refused anything

the CMF-DVD!) as do most record labels/movie companies) you to send them one of the following
i along with a reference playable disc:
1 - DLT tapes, One per layer. Type III or III XT usually preferred, although most can read the larger type IV tapes. The type III and III XT are universally readable).
2 - CMF-DVD, One per layer.
3 - DDP-DVD, One per layer. (This is getting rarer these days, as most go for the CMF-DVD as it's a newer version of the Spec).
Now it's the cynical bit.
IMHO, DVD-R as a DVD Movie is usually accepted because sadly there are a lot of authoring houses out there who have absolutely no idea how to deliver a properly formatted master. It's a desperation thing, as you would not have found a single one 5 years ago who would accept anything other than a DLT. They have had to go this route as I suspect they were getting fed up with being made to look like the Bad Guy all the time rejecting substandard masters. So they will - usually reluctantly, but if you ask them outright "Will you take a DVD-R?" they will automatically assume you have no idea, take a DVD-R. This will get turned into DDP by them, as they will (often correctly) assume it is quicker for them to PreMaster your disc from a reference copy. You'll pay extra for this as well. They will of course deny it, but your bottom line will go up.

Dual Layer DVD Stock

Has anyone had any good / bad experiences with any brand of dual layer DVD stock? I'm getting ready to start a project and I have an external LaCie dual layer burner that I want to burn to. Thanks in advance!

I have also had miserable luck with Memorex DVD-R DL blanks. The only ones that verify at all are those that I burn at, 1x and two out of three of those are coasters. At $3 each that's really annoying.
I think I'd have gotten more enjoyment out of lighting cigars with the $60 I paid for the 20 discs rather than giving it to Staples for expensive coasters.
Taiyo Yuden, Fuji, and newer Verbatim seem to be the best mfg of DVD-R DL blanks. But their stuff is still pricey. Mitsui also makes great blanks, but I don't know if they are making DVD-R DLs yet.

I did find a vendor who would sell me Taiyo Yuden DVD-R DL blanks for $1 ea., but I needed to buy a minimum of 300.
Beware that if you are burning a DVD-Video disc via DVDSP to one of these beauties, DVDSP does not verify the burn afterward like Toast or the built-in OS X disc burner.
So you may not be aware of errors in your disc. Watch out for this if you are burning a disc to send off for mastering.

Errors burning dual-layer DVD+R's

OK.... this is truly odd.
We are running DVD Studio Pro 4.0.3 as well as Toast 7.1
Whenever we burn a dual layer DVD+R disc from either DVDSP or Toast 7.1 we get an Error -5001 (AFP Authorization continue) failure during the lead-out. The disc mounts and appears to play just fine, but we are very leery about using these as masters.
We have been able to replicate this on every G5 in the studio regardless of burner.
Anyone know what is causing this error?
We are trying to get this disc to duplication ASAP but don't trust these burns.

As to using the DVD+Rs as masters, usually not a great idea ( you mean for replication I take it?) DLTs are usually more reliable, though I have got issues once in awhile with DLTs. Well once actually and it is driving me nuts right now

Separating a dual layer into single layers?

I mastered a DVD on a dual layer DVD9, and the replicator I sent it to said the copyright protection I put on it doesn't work, that I need to separate each layer and burn to individual discs. Kind of like mastering to DLT, but using dvd's. I tried exporting to the hard drive instead of the burner using DDP 2.10 and .img, and they create 1 TS file that is 7 gig. I'm looking to get 2 separate TS files that are roughly 3.5 gig each. Anyone know how to achieve this?

I disagree with the fact that you can make .img files and have CSS without using a DLT. I wish I could do. My DLT 8000 won't do a format and write in DSP4 version 4.1 running on a MAC PRO and I need to send stuf to a replicator and can't fiqure out how to do so. If you can provide a work around, and I will try the one you suggested. But so far .img files don't have CSS without using a DLT.

Mastering house says DDP disks failed... again.

I'm having some serious and mysterious problems with a DVD9 I'm getting mastered for replication. I don't have access to a DLT drive, so I'm sending the DDP files on two DVD-R's, which the mastering house says should be no problem. However, everytime I send the disks, they get fatal errors. Here are the errors they get when they run it through Eclipse:
1) Opposite track path not valid for single layer
2) Control data and DDP layer count disagree (CTRL=1, DDP=2)
3) Control data and DDP main data length disagree
4) Invalid control data disc size
5) Invalid control data layer type
I've sent them five different sets of disks, trying everything I could think of: I've tried scrapping the old build files and starting from scratch, I've tried moving the manual layer break to a different place, and I've tried exporting as DDP 2.0., DDP 2.1, and CMF. And I've double-checked everything I can think of to make sure I've specified the disk properties correctly: DL, OTP, manual break, etc., etc.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm feeling a bit desperate and lost.

PS: Here is all the relevant technical info I can think of:
It was authored using DVDSP4.1 on a 20" Intel Imac, exported as a disk image (DDP, CMF, etc) and burned using Toast Titanium 7.1. (I used UDF, not video.) The project is about 6.9 gigs. I don't get any serious errors during the build or format. (Just the regular errors that everyone here seems to agree are normal.) There is no CSS, Macrovision, or any of that stuff to complicate things. It's all region. The only less-than-straightforward thing about the whole project is that it is dual-layer. I've burned several playable DL versions on my DL SuperDrive and they work fine.
And two possibly related threads:
Apple tech support suggested it might have something to do with general media vs authoring media. The connection is unclear to me, so I'm posting on that issue separately as "General Media vs. Authoring Media."
There's also a possible issue around the seamless/non-seamless nature of the layer breaks, which I am posting separately as "Seamless vs Non-Seamless--Receiving Contradictory Advice"

Can you build this to a disc image onto a hard drive and send them that - either on the drive or via FTP?
Did they ask you to use UDF in Toast? Have you tried sending each folder as a data disc?
How about simply dropping the entire image (build to disc image) into toast, use a DL disc and burn it as data... the house should be able to get the image off (which wil conatin all necessary information) and work with that.
You don't need to get into authoring media for this work - you can send each layer on a different DVD-R if the replicators have agreed to this... you just need them to specify exactly how they want to receive it. Most will say DDP2, DDP2.1 or CMF (or any) and then describe what format the discs should be for them to work with them.
