This must be the weirdest error I've ever seen on Arch. Unless my system has 'upgraded' itself to a 64 bit one overnight.

omgwtf i'm having the same problem

  • Some 32-bit packages in Arch64 repo

Can you include wine32 and flash into Arch64 repo? I understand that you must rebuild them with other deps (some 32-bit libs), but it will be cool and many Arch64 users says "tnx" for it

Check in [community] and AUR for packages. Arch64 doesn't support a mixed 32/64-bit environment officially.

  • [SOLVED] Pacman trying to install 64-bit packages on 32-bit system

I was upgrading my Arch Linux i686 install, and I got the following error:
error: The mirror 'http://mirror.rit.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch' contains the $arch variable, but no Architecture is defined.
I added Architecture = i686 to /etc/pacman.conf under [options], and when I run pacman -Syu, I get these errors:

  • Only a temp KDE 4.5 beta 1 i686 repo

OK, After I heard that KDE 4.5 beta 1 is out, and kde-unstable is hold it, I remove kdemod as soon as possible to change to the offical kde and finally found that there is no i686 available!
I know a few days later they may set i686 repo up. But I can't wait ..
So I set up an kde-unstable repo for any one who want it.
If you want to use this one, it's your own risk.
It contains all kde package, support libs, and only some of the newer l10n package (many l10n packages don't compile..) and recompiled 4.4.3 kdepim (because new kdepim will not out with kde 4.5).
    Backup your ~/.kde4 before updating
I don't promise to keep this repo sync with the offical repo, so if offical kde 4.5 beta is available in kde-unstable, you should switch to it.
If you have any problems like depend is missing, you should try to enable testing or tell me.
It will be fully available in few minutes, I'm uploading the final kdeedu packages.
    i686 only!

Yes. If packages with the same names exist in several repos, the order of repos is decisive.

Ok so I downloaded the most current installer CS5.1, My previous installer was version 5.0. It did install fine fully updated to my license version. I just wanted to update in case anyone in the future has a similiar experience. Too bad this advice was not offered by the "experts" here.

  • Core dump using OCI HP 32 bit package

Does any one successfully run OCI application on HP using 32 bit libraries?
I got core dump at the end of running application, around desctruction part. Following are the statement I got from GDB:
    #0 0xc005db14 in pthread_mutex_destroy+0x18 () from /usr/lib/libpthread.1
    #1 0xc021efd8 in __thread_mutex_free+0x40 () from /usr/lib/libc.2

    #5 0x65a8 in main () at /vobs/Guru2/Oracle/HP-UX/sdk/demo/oci_wrapper_insert.cpp:73
If I build my application in 64 bit using OCI 64 bit package, no problem at all. But I have to make my application work in 32 bit so that I can not simply switch to 64 bit.
Please give me some help. Thanks.

I got the problem solved myself. The core dump happens when use OCI 32 bit libraries with STL string. It cores at destroying the STL string.
Add the option "-mt" to the compile command, the problem will go away.

  • Making 32-bit packages in Arch64

    Hi Arch community,
I have successfully installed a 32-bit chroot in my Arch64 system.
When I download 32-bit PKGBUILDs from AUR, and run makepkg, it warns me that making packages as root can seriously damage my system.
Is there a good, safe way to build 32-bit packages on a 64-bit Arch system?
    Thanks

Also, if you've set up the chroot according to the wiki you can just do "su [username]" inside the chroot to become a regular user inside the chroot.

  • Get your Gnome 2.16 PKGBUILDs here-- x86_64 & i686 repos

Hi all!  I put together some very rough PKGBUILDs for the much anticipated Gnome 2.16 by updating software revisions in the official PKGBUILDs.  Hopefully it will tide you over until the devs get back.  Please post any issues you encounter during compile/install and how to fix them to this thread so that everyone can update the PKGBUILDs on their system accordingly and continue the build.
    Enjoy
Update 09/12/2006: Added a repo (thx shadowhand) so it's easy to install:
    64-bit:
    [karsten]
    http://arch.os-zen.net/pkg/karsten/x86_64
    32-bit:
    [karsten]
    http://arch.os-zen.net/pkg/karsten/i686
make sure to put "IgnorePkg = libwnck" in your pacman.conf after you've updated so it won't go bezerk.
    PKGBUILDs to make/install yourself:
    updated version: (0.22) (09/12/06 23:27 CST):
    gnome-2.16build0.22.tar.bz2
    changelog (0.22):
    updates-issues
    suggested install order:
    suggested-install-order
    screenshot:

put this in every PKGBUILD which is causing scrollkeeper trouble:
    find . -name Makefile.in -exec sed -i -e 's/-scrollkeeper-update.*//' {} ;
    if [ -f omf.make ]; then
    sed -i -e 's/-scrollkeeper-update.*//' omf.make
    fi
    ./configure --prefix=/opt/gnome --disable-scrollkeeper
the sed takes care of the not installing scrollstuff on compile/package making time.
    and put
    scrollkeeper-update -q -p var/lib/scrollkeeper
in the .install file this will update the scrollkeeper stuff on install, this shoul d get the scrollkeeper trouble out..
p.s. knarsten: if you do not have a clue to fix it contact me on msn/jabber

  • Making packages for i686 and x86_64

I have a number of packages which I use which are either not mainstream, or if they are, I compile a bit differently.
I distribute them amoung machines which are both i686 and x86_64 so the question is can I make them for both types of CPU at the same time or indeed on the same machine?
If not why not? And, can we change makepkg so that it can?

I believe it is, but it is a lot more difficult.  On your i686 host system, you would need an x86_64 kernel (and toolchain?).  I have never actually tried....

  • Install Package Not In Repo

I would like to know how you can install a package not in the repos. The reason is my favorite video game is coming back Unreal Tournament. They have a linux version for the game which is nice. Can someone instruct me on how to get pacman to install the game?

    Trilby wrote:
Which wiki, ours or theirs?  Our wiki can't help you with this - the provided zip file has none of the bits needed to be used on a system other than the one it was built on.  Their wiki does not give any information about the system it was built on, nor the requirements for running it on another system.
It also uses relative links to the libraries they provide in a non-standard directory structure - so this could never be "installed", it could only be run from wherever you unpacked it (unless perhaps you could relink it).  You can unpack the zip file in your home directory, then just run the binary.  But you'll likely just end up with the same segfault it gives me.
I'm going to defer to you. Can you give me a description about what is needed? I will bring it to their attention. I have a feeling these guys are primarly windows developers. Can you recommend some good reading to learn more about linux functionality. I have learned alot but, progress is slow. I know there is alot to learn but, I'm a pretty quick study.
The wiki I was talking about was what they provided in the zip file to what arch wiki described. I couln't put it together. It makes sense I couldn't
EDIT: I just posted a link to this post for their review. Don't worry about the description. However, I would like the reading.

  • Jgraphx-1_5_1_11-1-any.pkg.tar.xz in community (i686) repo.

Inside community repo there is a packet named jgraphx-1_5_1_11-1-any.pkg.tar.xz.
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/community/os/i6 … pkg.tar.xz
This packet can't be downloaded (550 Failed to change directory). It causes some rsync errors.
symlink has no referent: "/community/os/i686/jgraphx-1_5_1_11-1-any.pkg.tar.xz" (in archlinux)
IO error encountered -- skipping file deletion
There is also a packet named jgraphx 1_4_1_0-1 and is what pacman tries to install.

Maybe your sync database is out of date. Upgrade the system and try downloading the package again.
    pacman -Syu python2-pytz
If that doesn't work, there may be something wrong with your mirror. Change it in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and run the above command again.

  • Question about xmonad package in the repos.

    When I
    sudo pacman -S xmonad
it installs xmonad and ghc goodness. But one thing that has always bothered me is that I had to hunt down a default .xmonad/xmonad.hs config file for xmonad. Can anyone explain why the package doesn't come with a default configuration file?

xmonad's "default config" is no config.  i believe the file you want is buried somewhere in /usr under a different name.  if you poke around xmonad.org you can find the path/name to that file but also a copy/pastable (albeit older) version of it.
i think it's done this way b/c the tweaking method is different with xmonad.  it's not like editing /etc/xmonad.hs and putting it in ~, you actually /load/ the defaults into ~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs and then /override/ them with your changes.  this is done with a simple main function like this:
    main = do
    xmonad $ defaultConfig
and whatever's between { } (explicit commands or calling of functions) is passed through the defaultConfig, picking up any settings not yet set, then fed to xmonad.
so unlike other WMs where you copy a default config and edit it from there.  in xmonad, you load the default config into yours with $ defaultConfig and put your tweaks (and only your tweaks) in xmonad.hs.  bit of a change in thinking.
/edit: yes Xyne, i second Ashren.  it's a wonderful WM and haskell's awesome.  my xmonad.hs is available in my sig if you want it, i'm fairly proud of it.

  • Can i install a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit package ? and they work together ?

Customer environment is Linux x86-64 having package pam-0.99.6.2-6.el5_4.1.x86_64 installed as per x86-64 server and application requirement.
    i.e # rpm -qi pam-0.99.6.2-6.el5_4.1
Name : pam Relocations: (not relocatable)
Version : 0.99.6.2 Vendor: Oracle America
    Release : 6.el5_4.1 Build Date: Thu 11 Mar 2010 02:58:52 AM MST
Install Date: Tue 27 Apr 2010 02:12:43 AM MST Build Host: ca-build9.us.oracle.com
    Group : System Environment/Base Source RPM: pam-0.99.6.2-6.el5_4.1.src.rpm

    URL : http://www.us.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs/pam/index.html
Summary : A security tool which provides authentication for applications
    Description :
PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) is a system security tool that
allows system administrators to set authentication policy without
having to recompile programs that handle authentication.
Now customer is installing other oracle monitoring application which is looking/requesting for 32 bit version of pam-0.99.6.2.6.el5_4.1 (i386), i.e this library
    Question:
So, is there any way we can install the 32 bit version of this ?  While 64 bit is still there ?
Concern with installing the 32 bit library, is that something picks it up mistakenly when it expects the 64 bit version.
Edited by: sgaraga on Jun 8, 2012 4:39 PM

You can run 32-bit software under a x86-64 OS provided you install the necessary x86 (32-bit) libraries.
The x86_64 CPU is fully backwards compatible with Intel x86 16-bit and 32-bit code. Because the full x86 16-bit and 32-bit instruction sets remains implemented in hardware without any intervening emulation, existing x86 executables run with no compatibility or performance penalties (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64)
An application that is 32-bit or 64-bit will have to be linked or share the appropriate library. 32-bit and 64-bit libraries won't be confused because they use different names.

  • Blender package in the repo is out of date

Blender 2.49 has bean out for some time, yet the package in the repository is still at version 2.48a. On other distros(Ubuntu) I normally compile Blender from SVN, but Arch has previously kept up with the fast release cycle, though not with 2.49 apparently.

This builds the latest version for me. It may not be perfect, but it might be a start. It's based of an old script I had. Also, I have scripts for the Sim Physics branch (which has volumetrics) and the upcoming 2.5 branch (which ain't quite ready for prime time testing but has much of the new UI stuff)
Note: IT BUILDS FROM SVN, so it builds the LATEST release from SVN -- it's "bleeding edge" on the stable trunk!
