6509 MLS erros on Supenginer

Hi,
I'm facing below error on sup engine and due to that it gets reload after some time.
Aug 24 09:31:28.059 JST: %PM_SCP-SP-2-LCP_FW_ERR_INFORM: Module 1 is experiencing the following error: Pinnacle #0, Above Set Threshold: Re

According to cisco, it can be any of linecard on 6500 which might be creating problem ?
Is there any command could be test command on Sup enginer which i can execute to get cause of above error ?
Can any body help on this ?

theres no command you can type to get the cause of the error.
your internal switch hardware is sending bad data to the switch logic. (crc errors indicate the data is not at the receiver)
this could be caused by the sender or receiver hardware in the switch.
you can begin trboubleshooting by removing all blades, except a single supervisor, powering on the chassis and thoroughly watching POST, checking tests after post and any logs for errors.
if this goes well, insert one of the removed blades. watch the POST and initialization of the blade and check the test and logs after it's operational. at this point, attempt to pass data, as much as possible, to try and attempt to get the symptom.
if no symptom, do the same with the next blade, etc, etc. until all blades have been tested and you either find your culprit or in worst case must keep looking.
(seems like hardware failure that needs to be replaced)
can TAC replace the supervisor?

  • Checksum errors on MLS 6509 Sup1A

    Hi All,
I see many checksum errors(Show logging) on MLS 6509 and Sup1A.
Some times required logs are missing due to these checksum error logs.
Can I find from which Ethernet port I am receiving these error frames?
Is there any command to disable these error display in show logging?
    Regards,
    Madan.

Unfortunately, the only way to find the origin of this packet with bad checksum is to sniff the packets, but which vlan to sniff? If you are running hybrid start sniffing the vlan that the sc0 belongs to. If you are running Native it will be a bit trickier but start with vlan 1 if it exists. These packet are easy to spot, the sniffer trace will show you any packet with bad checksum.

  • What is the best way to trust DSCP values on 6509 interfaces?

I have 6509's with 2 Ten-gig interfaces configured into a Port Channel (routed with IP addressing) - the IOS is 12.2(18)SXE3. I want to trust the DSCP values of packets traveling through the interfaces and have applied 'mls qos trust dscp' on both the physical Ten-gig interfaces as well as the L3 Port Channel interface.
1.Is it necessary to have the statement on all the interfaces, or is just having it on the Port channel enough?
Here is the config right now:
    interface Port-channel4
    description to 6509-Core-A P4 (T1/3, T2/3)
    ip address 164.xxx.xx.xx 255.255.255.252
    ip pim sparse-mode
    ip route-cache flow
    mls qos trust dscp
    interface TenGigabitEthernet1/1
    description to 6509-Core-A T1/3 (P4)
    no ip address
    ip route-cache flow
    mls qos trust dscp
    channel-group 4 mode desirable
    interface TenGigabitEthernet1/2
    description to 6509-Core-A T2/3 (P4)
    no ip address
    ip route-cache flow
    mls qos trust dscp
    channel-group 4 mode desirable
Also, what command can I use to see the dscp counters? In the 3560/3750 catalyst line you can enter: 'sh mls qos int f0/1 statistics' and get a display of all the dscp/cos input/output packet counts, but I can't find a comparable command in the 6509.
    2. Is there one?

I think you do this on the individual port interfaces, not the port-channel interface, becasue the queueing mechanisims associated with DSCP values are port based.
By doing this, if you have policy maps you want to use, you attach them to the ports not the port-channel.
For the command on 6509, you can use:
sh mls qos ip gigabitEthernet 1/1
Hope this helps and let me know how that works out.

When the cache engine goes down, the switch should be forwarding w/o using the cache. There is a keepalive mechanism to keep track of this. The switch and the cache exchange keepalives regularly. Check if there is a problem with the keepalives.

  • Netflow on 6509 in Native Mode from Vlan Interface

I'm trying to get a 6509-E, running Cisco IOS Software, s72033_rp Software (s72033_rp-IPSERVICES_WAN-M), Version 12.
2(33)SXI9, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2), to send netflow traffic from a vlan interface to a Solarwinds server.
The server is not seeing all the vlan traffic, but does see all the traffic on the layer 2 ports (not netflow).
I've seen that a command, ip flow ingress layer2-switched vlan, needs to be enabled, but the OS I have does not support that command.
Or could it be that MLS is not configured except for a couple commands:
    mls netflow interface
    mls cef error action reset
    netflow setup:
Flow export v5 is enabled for main cache
Export source and destination details :
      VRF ID : Default
        Source(1)       10.31.101.1 (Vlan52)
        Destination(1)  10.30.2.196 (2055)
      Version 5 flow records
14927339 flows exported in 615072 udp datagrams
0 flows failed due to lack of export packet
0 export packets were sent up to process level
0 export packets were dropped due to no fib
0 export packets were dropped due to adjacency issues
0 export packets were dropped due to fragmentation failures
0 export packets were dropped due to encapsulation fixup failures
0 export packets were dropped enqueuing for the RP
0 export packets were dropped due to IPC rate limiting
0 export packets were dropped due to Card not being able to export
    interface:
    interface Vlan52
     description AN.VDI.stu
     ip address 10.31.101.1 255.255.255.0

     no ip redirects
     ip flow ingress
     ip flow egress
     ip pim neighbor-filter 98
     ip pim sparse-dense-mode

    Enabling MLS was the fix.
    mls netflow interface
    mls flow ip interface-full
    mls nde sender version 5
    mls cef error action reset

  • QOS 6509 v12.2(17d)SXB10

6509 has WS-X6724-SFP, WS-X6748-GE-TX (RcvQ-1Q8T, xmtQ-1P3Q8T) and Sup720. I have questions about the command: mls qos rewrite ip dscp
Q.1. When is the received TOS rewritten ?
Q.2 Why would I want to use: no mls qos rewrite ip dscp ' to preserve TOS byte ?? At 6509, I am 'trusting dscp' at trunk ports, Can TOS byte still be overwritten ?

    Hi,
    1. The TOS is rewritten on egress
    2. You seem to be right. When you set a port to trust DSCP, you are getting the switch to not reset the DSCP to 0 for incoming packets. The switch will use whatever DSCP the packet came with. On egress, the switch will use the DSCP to CoS map to select the egress queue. Finally, when sending the frame out, the switch will set the CoS value to whatever CoS value the DSCP was mapped to. However, the DSCP value will not be overwritten, since that is supposed to be trusted. Therefore, the 'no mls qos rewrite ip dscp' appears to be redundant in this case. However, the difference is that this command is a global command and will result in ToS-preservation for packets received on all interfaces and not just those set to trust DSCP
Hope that helps - pls rate the post if it does.
    Regards,
    Paresh.

  • Local Director Acceleration on 6509

Has anyone here configured LDA on a Cat 6500? I have a 6509 w/ MSFC and I would like to use the Cat backplane to accelerate load balancing.
    Any suggestions?
    -->jason

    Jason,
remember that ASLB (aka LDA) is only available on "supervisor 1".
As for the configuration remember to do the following:
    - create a loopback address ifconfig eth0:1 -arp
The -arp option prevents the server from answering ARP requests
sent by the MSFC (or upstream router) to the VIP, only the LD should
answer ARP requests for the VIP
    - Make sure to configure "lda" with the correct MAC addresses.
If you see that the 6500 doesn't create shortcuts (lda mls entries),
most likely you didn't configure the correct MAC addresses.
Configuring the LD MAC on the 6500 is trivial. As for the router
MAC you need to configure both the BIA and the HSRP MAC
    addresses.
    - Make sure that in the list of ports that you give in "set lda router"
and "set lda server" there are the router side port and server side
port of the LD respectively. Also make sure that you include the trunk
port that connects the distribution switches. This trunk port should
be present in both the "set lda server" and "set lda router" command.
    - To verify that your configuration works use traffic like telnet
that keeps the connection open so that you can show the
MLS entries and verify that the 6500 creates a shortcut.
If you use HTTP traffic it is harder to see if shortcuts are created
    because connections are closed faster.

  • Mls qos trust dscp??? is setting my DSCP values to zero!?

    Hi,
I was just doing some testing to ensure that the command 'mls qos trust dscp' is working on my 6509 switches before rolling out QoS.
Before adding any configuration I could see using wireshark that traffic from my Avaya 9608 handset was coming through with a DSCP value of 46 (as it is supposed to).
I then added the command 'mls qos' (at global level)
on examining the wireshark output this time, the DSCP value had been set to zero (i.e. it defaulted it to best effort)
I then expected by adding the commmand 'mls qos trust dscp' on the interface the phone is connected to that the DSCP value would would again be left alone?
does anybody know why this is happening?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Andy

    Hi,
    thanks for your reply.
    mls qos
    interface GigabitEthernet3/34
    description *** DATA VLAN 35 - VOICE VLAN 34 ***
    switchport
    switchport trunk native vlan 36
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 34,36
    switchport mode trunk
    mls qos trust dscp
    no cdp enable
    spanning-tree portfast trunk
If i don't include the global 'mls qos' command then the voice packets keep the dscp 46 value.  If I add the mls qos command this causes the switch to set the dscp values to zero.
    Thanks again
ps.  there are some other mls commands on the switch... i don't know if these could interfere but they were already on there so i'm reluctant to remove them..

  • Netflow not reporting Egress traffic on 6509 Vlan

    Hi...
We have a pair of 6509 working in a VSS configuration (IOS 12.2(33)SX5). The 6509s connect to a pair of ASAs (7.2 code) running in an Active/Standby setup. These ASAs in turn connect to routers going to remote sites. I have configured Netflow on the following VLANS,
    VLAN 10 - Servers Vlan
VLAN 9 - Transit/ASA VLAN (connects ASAs to 6509s). All traffic originating from any VLAN on the 6509 crosses this VLAN in order to reach remote                 sites and vice versa
I configured the netflow source VLAN 11 although I am not collecing any netflow from it.
Although I have been getting lots of Netflow info, I noticed that netflow for traffic originating from any user VLAN on the 6509s going to any remote site via TRANSIT/ASA VLAN(9) does not get reported, I even tested with 4 GB traffic but no result. Only reverse traffic (i.e. from remote site to user VLAN) is reported as it traverses the Transit VLAN (9).
I read somewhere that egress netflow is not supported in 6500, but isnt traffic originating from a user vlan to a remote site via the transit VLAN (9) considered ingress with respect to the transit VLAN (9)?
I would like to know whether bidirectional Netflow is supported on 6500 VLANS. I have mimimum control on routers beyond the ASAs, and since these ASAs run 7.2 code netflow is not supported, and Monitoring this Transit Vlan gives me extremely useful info.
I do get netflow biderectional traffic from the Server Vlan 10, but I think it is correlated by the netflow collector from vlans 9 and 10
Below is a show run | inc flow
    ip flow-cache timeout active 1
ip flow ingress layer2-switched vlan 9,10
    mls netflow interface
    mls flow ip interface-full
    interface vlan 9
    ip flow ingress
    ip flow egress
    interface vla 10
    ip flow ingress
    ip flow egress
    ip flow-export source vlan11
    ip flow-export version 9
    ip flow-export destination 10.10.10.10 2055
    All help is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
So if I want to capture traffic out only one specific interface is there any option to do that in catalyst 6500.
If I made only that specific interface in another vlan and if under the interface vlan , I give "ip flow ingress" will this capture the outgoing traffic through the interface while it is doing intervlan routing. Also is it must to give ip address in that vlan interface ? Please clarify.

  • 6509 Sup swap failover time

    Hi,
    I'm having MLS 6509 with Sup2/MSFC2 and running either 12.1(23)E1 and 12.1(26)E1.
IF i do sup swap using "reducancy force switchover" all line card interface goes down and even ospf also goes down and then come back and that create outage for me.
Can any body tell me is it expected behaviour ? and if yes, what is taken over time inlclduing making interface and all routing process up.
    Rgds
    Chintan

    Hi Chintan
I think the best way to avoid this is configuring NSF with SSO Supervisor Engine Redundancy:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a008027e4cd.html
Cisco NSF works with SSO to minimize the amount of time a network is unavailable to its users following a switchover while continuing to forward IP packets. The main purpose of NSF is to continue forwarding IP packets following a supervisor engine switchover.
Cisco NSF is supported by the BGP, OSPF, and IS-IS protocols for routing and is supported by Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) for forwarding. The routing protocols have been enhanced with NSF-capability and awareness, which means that routers running these protocols can detect a switchover and take the necessary actions to continue forwarding network traffic and to recover route information from the peer devices.
But you will need a 12.2 IOS release to run this feature.
    Hope this helps

  • CEF vs MLS

    Hi.
I try to understand the L3 switching issues on the Catalyst range
    switches.
As I already know MLS was the mechanism of the L3 switching on the older sort of Catalysts (5000/6500MSFC1). But the MLS has evolved to the CEF switching.
Do CEF mean L3 switching ? And what's difference between CEF on router and on L3 switch ?
What about to MLS and CEF working the same time on e.g. 6500? Are they mutually exclusive or they work together in some manner? In what manner? Why can I issue "sh mls cef ... " on 6509/sup720 ?
When I issue "sh platform forward ... " on 3750, does it mean HARDWARE CEF((I call it)? How about "sh ip cef " .
It is very confusing. I don't know whether CEF equal to L3 switching or there is HARDWARE CEF and SOFTWARE CEF ?
    Could someone explain the issue?
    thanks!

    Hi henry,
As you now MLS was a traditional type of route caching mechanism that was used on older hardware/software. It was also called as route once switch many forwarding.
CEF cisco epress forwarding is mutually exclusinve of MLS as it has a different way to work. With the advent of CEf, the routing table ( l3 FIB table forwarding information base) and adjaceny table(l2) gets download on the hardware and does the L3 switching. Its is done in hardware so no performance issue.
CEF on router and L3 switch is the same.

  • Configuring IDSM-2 Promiscuous Mode with MLS IP IDS

I am having a problem configuring promiscuous mode with an IDSM-2 running 5.0(3)S181.0 in a 6509 with Sup 720 running IOS 12.2(18)SXD4. I am running router interfaces without VLANs so I have created an extended access list with a 'permit ip any any' and configured this on my interfaces with 'mls ip ids access-list-name'. I configured 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 1 capture' and 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 2 capture', and because of the caution note on page 14-12 of 78-16127-01 I also configured 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 1 capture allowed-vlan 1-4094' and 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 2 capture allowed-vlan 1-4094'. After that I can see the output counters rising in 'show 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 1 traffic' and 'show 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 2 traffic'. I can configure the IDSM-2 using the VMS management center, and I added my sensor to security monitor and set the level down to informational, but I don't even see any events or even the start-up informational message. Anyone have any idea what I missed?

Here is a document on Configuring the Catalyst Series 6500 Switch for IDSM-2 in Promiscuous Mode.
