6d wrong choice for portrait work?

Ok guys,
I was debating for quite some time whether to by the 6d or the 70d. Then I debated the 6d vs 5dIII. I went with the 6d based on many reviews, opinins and some great help on this forum. I haven't really had the chance to put it through it's paces yet. I really hate reading manuals, so I bought this short Creative Live class the John Greengo held on the 6d. He was saying that hardly anyone would use this camera in the studio since you have to run it at 1/100 to get a decent sync speed. This makes me nauseous. This was the main reason I bought this camera was for studio portraits. Does anyone have any encouraging words to make me feel like I made the wrong choice? I definitgely want a full frame, so if this isn't the one, I would have to spend twice as much on the 5dIII.

I should add... once upon a time nearly every camera that I worked with for studio photography... had a flash sync speed of 1/60th, there was no such thing as "high speed sync", and this really was no problem at all.  It's not like we felt we needed to overcome a weakness in the camera to do studio shooting.
As Skirball points out, I do not think you'll have any trouble at all at 1/160th.

  • Wrong choice for a monitor?

    Hi... just bought a samsung lcd tv monitor to hook up to my macbook pro, but I can't get good resolution for graphic design. selected highest res possible in s system preferences, but still sucky. Is it not a good choice for a  graphics monitor?

    TV monitors are usually never good for graphic design because they are designed to be viewed from across the room where the pixels merge when being viewed for a distance. So they tend to have bigger pixels and spaced more apart than computer monitors.
    Up close requires a higher pixel count per sq inch. So a 17" MacBook Pro has a like 1080i screen up close within a couple of feet as a 50" HD TV has the same at 20 feet.
    Since TV content is max at 1080i for 1980 x 1000 pixel count,  there is no need to make it bigger for up close and computer use.
    Graphic monitors of that larger caliper have something like 3000 x 2000 pixel resolution at 30 and 40" sizes to get the fine detail and less blurry type and images.
    If your looking for a larger screen for graphic design, I don't recommend Apple's glossy screens at all, look for a professional anti-glare high res models online.
    Apple has been slowly exiting certain markets that depended upon it's hardware in favor of serving only the consumer markets for gizmos.
    I fully expect the MacPro to go the way of the XServer in the coming years as demand slacks off for their "Pro" products.
    Apple is already introducing only integrated graphics in their "Pro" line of laptops and ineffective for serious professional use glossy displays.

  • Thinkpad T410s - Is the 32-bit a wrong choice for me?

    Hi everyone,
    I have ordered T410s (2901CTO) with 4GB (2DIMM) and 32-bit Win7. My current concern is about running SAS (Statistical Analysis System) - a statistical and data management software application - that I use to process huge data sets (at least 5GB each). Is the choice of 32-bit a bad choice, because I will not be able to take full advantage of memory upgrades if I want later on.
    Say if I buy 8GB for the memory upgrades, then it's only a waster of $$$ as the 32-bit system can only see it but cannot access it. Is that really the case? What is the solution for me now besides returning it and placing a new order for the 64-bit?
    Another question is, How can I determine the year/month of release for this model T410s 2901CTO? I've been trying to find it out on the net and I still haven't been able to find any information.
    Thanks so much for helping!

    Hi pantera,
    You can order 64-bit version from lenovo without returning your system:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-74752
    T410s was introduced in the beginning of 2010, if you're looking for the manufacturing date of your system then you can find it on the back sticker, it reads in this format Year/Month (e.g. 09/12).
    Hope this helps.
    Maliha (I don't work for lenovo)
    ThinkPads:- T400[Win 7], T60[Win 7], IBM 240[Win XP]
    IdeaPad: U350
    Apple:- Macbook Air [Snow Leopard]

    but why is it bad to record internally today
    I didn't say it was "bad" as such, I said I'd only do it when necessary (and I do) but I'd generally still record to external drives where possible.
    imagine you're having a 500 GB internally you can still back up on a other drive after.
    is there any consequence about that kind of configuration?
    The thing is, the internal drive is the system drive, so it has all kinds of drive activity going on in addition to audio - swap file reading and writing, loading apps, utilities, logging functions and many more.
    i heard about the lifetime too but more from some experience from 2009 but i don't know what
    happen with the new model if they upgrade their ssd in anyway?
    Time will tell I guess, these technologies are new and unproven over enough time yet.

  • URGENT: Monitor choice for New G5s (Nov 2005)

    Sorry bout the "Urgent" but I need to decide on following before purchasing new G5 (Quad or Dual-Core 2.3) and Apple Monitors only have 3 year warranty if purchased with the computer.
    SITUATION:
    I plan to go with either the default NVidia Geforce 6600 or the NVidia 7800GT(+$350) * Both cards (PCI Express models) - only have DVI ports (1 single link, 1 dual).
    --I am truly baffled at how this (DVI vs VGA) affects both features and screen image)
    MY CONCERNS: (please consider these in your answers)
    * Text:I stare at text for the better part of the day so Sharp Text is VITAL.
    * Color: Good color (proper balance consistency & controls) but most important: Monitor to printer translation so a good color profile counts, (most of my final output via ID to local Phaser6250.)
    * Compatibility: ie will I be able to take advantage of advertised features via DVI
    *Lastly: I don't give a hoot about gaming, DVD playback not a big concern. I want a monitor functions well for running computer applications. Stuff like USB ports and media readers nice but not deal breakers...
    SUMMARY OF ISSUES
    In most ways, the HP & Dell models sound preferable (feature wise). BUT:
    * Will I have the same controls & adjustments (brightness, contrast etc) available for these, (specifically since I'll be connecting via a DVI port) THIS IS VITAL. (but..don't care about Portrait mode)
    * Will image/text look as good on a Mac as a PC?
    * I assume there will never be Mac drivers for either of these, spooked that this will limit functions and/or could cause compatibility issues in the future.
    How would I get color profiles for these?
    MONITORS BEING CONSIDERED
    As i can find no good advice on CRTs I've pretty much narrowed my choice to following 23" LCD's (all priced similarly $1200-1300):
    Following info from misc sources (of varying in reliability) the Web, sources but specs correct.
    1) Apple HD Cinema 23":(often compared poorly to Dell, but users seem to love) 25.6 dot pitch
    Pros: Can count on compatibility: Firewire ports, aluminum bevel
    Cons: Color issues: I hear there's a pinkish tint around edges, and generrally uneven color across the screen., greenish tint in greys. If my printouts match the screen I can live with this. **DVI ONLY
    2) Dell 2405FPW: (a lotta buzz on the net, good reviews) 27 dotpitch
    Pros: Better outputs: (DVI, VGA, Composite, S-Video, component video), better contrast),
    Tilt, turn, Raise. (not a deal breaker)
    Cons: Compatibility?. I heard this screen runs too bright even with adjustment (at least on a Mac), large dot pitch, questionable support
    3) HP L2335: (editors choice MacWorld Jan 2006) .258 dot pitch
    Pros: Better outputs: (DVI, VGA, Composite, S-Video, component video), better contrast)
    Programmable user modes (have this on my current monitor - really nice), Tilt, swivel, Raise.
    Cons: Compatibility?. questionable support, (supposed to be pretty ugly, but don't about this.
    FINAL QUESTIONS:
    Has anyone worked with 1 or more of these monitors ON a Mac via DVI? --comments?
    Since there's no way to view PC Monitors under these circumstances...
    * Can anyone comment on what questions I'd need answered to determine compatibility/feature function ability (via Mac DVI)?
    * Am I being paranoid about my using PC Monitor concerns. (my greatest being, that if things poor out of box will get little to no help from manufacturers).
    Sorry so long, trying to be clear, THANKS IN ADVANCE- Xandra
    PMac Quicksilver, PBook G4 Titanium, iMacDV SE   Mac OS X (10.3.8)
    PMac Quicksilver, PBook G4 Titanium, iMacDV SE   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    I recently purchased the 2405FPW in Canada for $900 CAD (in fact its still on sale) with free shipping. I can highly recommend it. It is certainly not too bright. I have zero dead pixels and am actually surprisingly impressed. Video playback was better than expected and reading Text is very easy at its optimal resolution of 1900x1200.
    That being said, is 1900x1200 TOO sharp/small? The monitors performance does vary based on its resolution. The colour is also quite good. Not too oversaturated as with many LCD's (or washed out for that matter).
    I suggest you familarize yourself with Colour Calibration Tool (go to Display Properties, Color Calibrate...)
    The other big factor for me is the Component Video In that I am using to hook up a High Def signal (yes this is a capable HD TV). Don't kid yourself this is an excellent feature.
    In regards to your concerns you can do ALOT of alteration of the LCD via the OSD (the on screen display). But you should make sure to setup ANY LCD via color calibration tool.
    Images and text look better on a Mac than a PC in my opinion due to the nature of Quartz Extreme and Quartz font smoothing (your video cards will be excellent at utilizing these features).
    In regards to drivers, NIETHER need it. You plug it in (I've used both) and the OS will automatically switch to the default resolution and the default color profile is installed (I tweaked the color profile a little via the color calibration tool...). Yes its true plug and play.
    I've never used the HP but I own the Dell. I've tried the Apple. Personally, the Apple looks better physically (but you say you don't care) and it does have a smaller dot pitch (I couldn't notice a big diff and I saw them side be side). The Dell is brighter (you can turn it up or down to your preference) and has better contrast. I LOVE the component in on the dell and have a HD game system hooked up and it looks marvelous.
    I also found the Dell more adjustable. Both the dell and the apple are excellent monitors and you can't go wrong. For me the addition of Component in for HD as well as a significant price difference (almost $800 CAD when taxes are added up, heck I could almost buy 2 dell for the price of 1 apple) made me buy the dell and so far I am very happy with it (although I now have to turn my head to game :D)

  • Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite: New Choices for Customers

    Adobe has announced the new Cloud-based model for software distribution, along with new terms for boxed product upgrade eligibility. Beginning with the CS6 releases, when they happen, upgrade pricing on boxed products will only be availble one generation back. There is a limited window to upgrade now to the current versions at a discount.
    See http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2011/11/adobe-creative-cloud-and-adobe-creative-suite -new-choices-for-customers.html

    Eugene:
      Based on the current information we have (from the blog post), which may not be correct and which you should not rely upon:
    There is some confusion about the word "discount." As used in the blog post, in general there are no "discounts" for upgrades, there is the upgrade price and there is full price. But, also in the blog post, there is a special "discount upgrade" if you choose to upgrade to CS5.5 today (prior to Dec. 31, 2011), which is 20% off the regular upgrade. However, Peter used the word "discount" to distinguish between upgrade pricing and full price. It's probably a good idea to avoid using that word there because of the potential for confusion.
    I have CS5 InDesign in work. So I will be able to upgrade that to CS6 when it comes out at the discount price?
    You will be able to upgrade to CS6 at upgrade pricing. Not the 20% discount, but it is "discounted" from the full price of CS6.
    I'm still using CS2 Illustrator and Photoshop, for the little work I do in those programs, they're fine. But if I want to upgrade them to CS6 I have to pay the full amount of an upgrade, with no discount... or will I have to pay for CS6 in full for both of these programs?
    You will have to pay the full price (not the "full amount of an upgrade," whatever that means).
    If you elect to upgrade to CS5.5 prior to Dec. 31 of this year, however, then then you can pay the discounted upgrade price to upgrade to CS5.5 (well, CS5 since Photoshop CS5.5 doesn't exist), and then you can pay the CS6 upgrade price in March/April. So you can pay for no upgrades (full price) or two upgrades (one of which is 20% off).
    At the moment I can upgrade CS2, photoshop and Illustrator for €240 each, to CS5. So wouldn't I just be able to do that now and then buy the CS6 upgrade at a much later date perhaps just before CS7 comes out?
    Yes, you can do that.
    If CS6 has the tools to basically go "File>Export>Epub" and I get a fully working epub file without having to trash about in code afterwards or make complex tagging in InDesign, then I'll be buying it.
    It looks like EPUB is evolving pretty fast, so even if ID CS6 fully supports what you want out of EPUB on Day 1, I bet you'll need to be prepared to postprocess it on Day 2. Or at least long before Day 200.

  • Choices for free goods determination

    Hi all,
    I want to have choices for free goods determination, like for Material A I want an option to select either of Material A or B.
    Is this possible.
    regards,
    Vandana Arora

    hello, friend.
    it is possible to do this manually, and not through the free goods determination.
    let us say you want to give 1 unit of either material A or B for every 10 units of C ordered by the customer.  what you do is create a sales order for 10 units of C as the first line item.  let us further say the first line item is item 10.
    enter either A or B as the second line item, which is item 20.  go to the column HL Itm and enter 10.  also change the item category of this line item to TANN.  just be sure to maintain this set up in item category assignment in IMG.
    there are drawbacks to this procedure, in that your choices for free goods will not be limited to material A or B.  but this could work for you.
    you may also wish to create a BOM, wherein free good A can be replaced by B.
    regards.

  • Question - is JavaMail the choice for me? Mass email delivery.

    Hello. I'm thinking about using JavaMail API, and I would like your feedback if JavaMail is the right choice for me.
    I'm working on a J2EE app (running on Glassfish) that will send email out to multiple recipients. The critical parts are
    1) It must scale so that it can send up to 10,000 email multiple times a day.
    2) The servlet that sends out the email must have a descent performance (can't hang while sending out 10,000 email forcing the user to wait, but for the servlet to send out 10,000 emails....I expect a little delay)
    So I'm using postfix for delivery with support for 10,000 recipients. I am thinking of using JavaMail inside a servlet which retrieves the 10,000 email addresses and creates 100 separate emails with 100 email recipients under BCC for each email.
    I am sending out the email in bulks of 100 separate email each with 100 recipients under BCC to address performance.
    Does my solution sound logical? Anything else I should be aware of?

    I'm not speaking from personal experience since I haven't tried to build something
    of the scale you're talking about, but...
    I wouldn't expect the overhead of the JavaMail API to be a significant issue here.
    Of course, you have to use the JavaMail API in a reasonable manner to get good
    performance and scalability.
    A lot depends on the performance of your server as well.
    I would expect the most difficult part to be handling the inevitable failures (network, server, etc.)
    that will occur when working at this scale.
    100 connections to your mail server several times a day shouldn't be an issue, but your
    mail server will be busy sending out all those messages.

  • Work around for request scope for Listitems-working

    Hi finally I got some work around solution for Listitems working with request scope, if any suggesion welcome, below is the small code of jsp and bean.
    <h:selectOneMenu id="ownerListMenu" value="#{pc_trackingSearchPage.trackingSearchPageBean.selectedOwner}">
                                            <f:selectItems value="#{pc_trackingSearchPage.trackingSearchPageBean.ownerList}" />
                                       </h:selectOneMenu>
    I used onPageLoadBegin() and onPagePost(),
    first on PageLoad - I am loading the List from DB, its displaying perfect.,
    than on pagePost -> I am setting the value ->ownerList.add(new SelectItem(getOwnerListMenu().getSubmittedValue().toString(),getOwnerListMenu().getSubmittedValue().toString()));
    ------->here is the getOwnerListMenu method.
         public HtmlSelectOneMenu getOwnerListMenu() {
              if (ownerListMenu == null) {
                   ownerListMenu =
                        (HtmlSelectOneMenu) findComponentInRoot("ownerListMenu");
              return ownerListMenu;
    so this way the List will not be empty what ever the user selectes it will be their, as i am setting key and values as same, so in submit method,
    i am getting the selected keys and going back to backend getting results displaying on other page,
    --->this will work only if they don't need the list , if they want to display the list again, they have to load freshelly.
    I hope it will give some solution for request scope, if the data is huge and not to save on the session for navigation purpose.
    suggestions welcome.
    Thanks

    Apperently iTunes 11 is not affected (Apple stil makes iTunes11 for the 14 yr old Microsoft XP OS, but not for anything PPCs can run. Go figure)
    "Next door" to Steve was metaphoric, he lived in Los Altos, about 15 miles away, but he cast a big shadow!
    On 9.2.1/10.4.11 differences, some time in the past someone selected 'save file' and checked the box 'don't ask again' on your computers dialog box. That's why you're not given a choice wih the file downloads. I would think that selection should be able to be reversed.
    iTunes 9.2.1/OS10.4.11 puts those downloaded URLs into the Music Libary of iTunes, no matter if it's opened directly, or you click on the file on your desktop. You can create a new playlist, highlight the selection in the Music Libary, and drag it to your new playlist to keep alll the steaming URLs together. NOTE, this only creates an alias, the URL copied by iTunes must remain in the Music Libary. You can then delete the the files on the desktop, if you want. I did multiple stations this way in 9.2.1, they all show in either the new playlist created, or in the Music Libary, and remain after the desktop files are deleted and trash emptied.
    You can switch sations by double clicking them. Another note, all the URLs were all from vtune.
    I hope this helps.
    PS, I forgot how clunky Tiger is compared to Leopard...

  • What is the best Mac choice for creating pro-level art/graphics/animation?

    I'm an artist who does a lot of work with Adobe Creative Suite CS5, as well as some video editing and lots of animation. I've been using a 2007 model 15-inch Macbook Pro for the last 4 years, and it seems like it's time to upgrade...it runs burning hot all the time, and the battery dies pretty quick when the cord falls out. It seems like the whole thing is running a little slow, which is probably because I have a TON of graphics/animation/video software on there, but I need each and every program.
    My question is, what is the best new Mac to purchase to replace this one? I want to make sure it lasts as long as possible, and will be able to handle the programs I use now. My first thought is to get another Macbook Pro, because of the portability, and just add on all the higher RAM, etc to customize it. But my husband suggested looking into the Mac Mini, because it's a lot cheaper, and we're a little strapped for cash at the moment. Would that serve the purpose? Or is a Macbook Pro really the best choice for what I need it to do?
    I'd love to hear suggestions from other artists or graphics people. What do you recommend?

    For a "cash strapped" person, unless you already
    have a monitor, one of the new iMacs may be
    a better choice.  If you do have a monitor, I would
    suggest the dual core i7 equipt MacMini.  Since you state
    you are using CS5 stuff, most Adobe apps,
    Photoshop for example, do not make effective
    use of multiple cores.  Also, using any of the
    Adobe products, regardless of which computer
    you decide on, get as much RAM as you can afford.

  • I use classical Hebrew for my work, and Pages will only display English characters even with a Hebrew font selected. If I cut and paste Hebrew characters from another document, as long as the font is supported, it will appear in Pages.  If I type it won't

    I use classical Hebrew for my work, and Pages will only display English characters even with a Hebrew font selected. If I cut and paste Hebrew characters from another document, as long as the font is supported, it will appear in Pages.  If I type it won't continue in Hebrew.  I have tried downloading several fonts, including those from professional societies, but the only way to get Hebrew in my document is to cut and paste.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  I use an older MacBook running OS 10.9.1.  I used to do my Hebrew work in Word, but it is no longer supported by Mac OS.

    Just clarifying:
    Pages '09 has bad support for Hebrew, Arabic etc but will accept pasted text.
    Pages 5 has much better support but with bugs.
    If you have columns they are in the wrong order ie Text starts in the left column and ends in the right column.
    If you type English into Hebrew text it tends to fall in the wrong position eg instead of to the left of Hebrew punctuation it goes to the right.
    As Tom recommends the only real solution on the Mac is Mellel.
    Peter
    btw Tell Apple, they are amazingly slow to fix this running sore which has been broken since RtoL was supposedly introduced in OSX 10.2.3 over a decade ago.

  • How to create a single action for adding a border and signature for portrait AND landscape images???

    i would love to be able to create a single photoshop action for adding a border, plus a signature in the bottom right corner, that works for both portrait and landscape images.
    need i say more?!
    i already have an action that adds a signature in the centre of the border at the bottom of the image e.g. the image below. what i want though is for that signature to be on the RHS and for the same action to work for portrait images as well.
    supplementary info: reason for this is that I want to be able to export 300 wedding images (mix of landscape and portrait images) from lightroom in my pre-selected order (meaning the files are labelled from 001 to 300, ordered according to how the wedding day unfolded) and then use PS to add the border and the signature, in the same place, and for it to work for both orientations.
    i need this to work for full sized exported jpeg images, i.e. i want the files that i give on CD to my clients to include my signature in this manner. so I don't want to copy the initial layer and then reduce the second layer size to leave a border around the second layer.
    i hope i've been clear and that someone can help me here. I think that this sort of presentation makes such a difference to final printed image, and I DONT want to have to go to all 300 images picking out the landscape from portrait ones (although this may be what I have to do and wouldn't really take that long but surely there's a better way!!!!).
    Thanks in advance photoshoppers ...

    It is actually quite easy to do if you have a good understanding of how Photoshop works.  To be able to handle any size Landscape and Portrait you need to scale the document to a known width or height.  Once the document is resized to the width or height it easy.  When yot resize the document you use Image size with resample NOT checked.  Not a single image pixels is changed all the happens is the documents DPI is set to the proper DPI resolution to print that size.  This lets you add a border sized for and document.  You can use Canvas Size check relative and  leatve the anchor point centered and set width and height to 2" this will add 1"on all sides. Use Canvas size a second time move the anchor point to the top center check relative and set height 1" the will add an additional 1" border on the bottom.  You then record a text layer with your Name title or what ever to the top left of the image. Select all ant the align the text layer to the selection to move it to the bottom right.
    Adding a couple of scripts to the action you can make sure there is a background layer so the added canvas will be filled with pixels.  You can restore the document to its original DPI resolution to retain the images print size. Down load my crafting actions package it contains a dozen scripts to be used within actions. There are text file with tips and guidelines additionaly there is one on dealing with document size and includes a sample action set with a watermarking action the can watermark and size image. The Action set is also saved as a text file with additional comments I added my downloads can be found here http://mouseprints.net/Photoshop.html

    Hi,
    I had the same issue, that taxes on invoice tab of PO was not printed correctly on PO form by calling CALCULATE_TAX_ITEM.
    If you want to have the same tax value as komp-mwsbp, that use following form routine call before FB CALCULATE_TAX_ITEM.
    perform j_1b_save_tax_fields(saplmepo) using ekko ekpo lfa1.
    This is used in transaction me23n also.
    Kind regards,
    Tülay
