7.1.6 update broke enhanced podcast in safari

hi.
i'm seeing some issues about the 7.1.6 update in the boards, but none that are quite what i'm experiencing. after applying the update i can view flash movies, and files from youtube, etc.; it is only the enhanced podcasts (in this case on an rss feed) that i'm having trouble with.
i have done the usual fixes, including reinstalling via download, repair permissions, delete plist files (move first - THEN delete!), tried other browsers. i have not tried an "archive and install", as i'm hoping to find a less drastic solution.
the offending site displays fine with 7.1.5 on a very similarly configured imac g4. am i alone? any other suggestions?

It appears to be a "bug" in 7.1.6 and the browser plug-in.
The .m4a files (MPEG-4 audio) that also include a video track seem to start to load via the plug-in (a quick display of the image then a change to the QT ? icon).
I suggested changing the extension to .m4v in another post as a "temporary" fix until Apple identifies the error and sends us a fix.
I think the error is part of new security features in QuickTime. The .m4a should be an audio file (this is what the plug-in expects) and when it finds the "video" it turns off the plug-in. The same file will play just fine in QuickTime Player.

  • Enhanced podcasts, images do not update in separate window?

Hi all, when I watch an enhanced podcast, the images update in the itunes artwork window as they should,
but if I click on the window to display the images in a separate window the images do not update in the new window,
if I do this with a video podcast then it works just fine, the video plays in the separate window without any problems,
is this a bug, or is itunes not able to do this yet?
    cheers, Rob

    Hi Rob,
Did you ever figure this out? I posted two similar questions (with no replies) before seeing yours. If this feature does not exist, I am thinking that this is something that Apple needs to address in the next iTunes update. Since Apple is promoting enhanced podcasts, it is only reasonable that iTunes make them easy to watch.

  • I can't get garageband to export!  It keeps getting stuck at 'creating chapters' when I try to export my enhanced podcast.  Please help!

I am trying to export my enhanced podcast through garageband.  I have all the current updates.  I am on my MacBookPro 10.6.8 2.3GHz with 8GB ram.  My enhanced podcast (podcast with pictures) is about 80 mins long and I have tried exporting with everything from the lowest settings to the highest always with the same result.  I have tried deleting GB preferences.  I have tried repairing permissions to no avail.
I hit export to disk or send to itunes.
I select some AAC format I want (optimized for spoken podcast).
It slowly builds the mix, normalizes, and creates chapters (yeah, it goes through the creating chapters bar to completion)
Then it goes all candystripe on the creating chapters bar once it fills up and will hang forever (hung for 8 hours....pretty much sounds like 'forever' in my book).
Please help...I have my podcast sitting there waiting to be used....I have tried exporting smaller chunks (by moving the end of file bar) but that doesn't work either.  Is there a way to just send the pictures and the picture start times over to imovie and work with it there?  I'd much rather work with the tools that imovie has but man that program is just a PITA to use when you want to run through 100+ pictures for variable durations (whereas it's easy to just drag and drop with garageband as you do playback).
The file only has one stereo audio track!

Hi notmatthew, I have exactly the same problem as you. I am trying to export a podcast about iPod X Anniversary so I need to publish it next sunday.
It's midnight in Spain but tomorrow I will tray something I read in other post:

    Problem solved.
I deleted the chapters one by one, exporting it each time, until it worked. i then replaced the image (which was a .jpg and i converted to .png) with that chapter and now it works.
    Could you try it?

  • Enhanced Podcasts Don't Display Pictures or Links.

Before the iOS 5 update, enhanced podcasts would periodically change pictures to match the topic or conversation amd links would appear in the upper center of the picture. Now, with the exact same podcast and episode just shows the podcast logo throughout the playback. Listening to the same podcast and episode on iTunes, the links amd pictures are fine and siplay properly. The podcast I am listening to is the Rooster Teeth Podcast (formerly known as the Drunk Tank).

hehe if somebody knows something this is def you Roger about first thing with seeing pic in itunes i think that i read all possible posts on web in last 7 days and nights and this is not working on my pc with control-click (Windows) but i don't care ! i wait for apple do magic bug fixing on new itunes version. And now about main problem. iOS devices are capable displaying chapter images because this is working right now with some podcast on my phone, i give you pic example iphone 4 iOS 6.1.2
in first pic you can see streaming podcast and chapters (little white dots on bar),second picture is first song with cover of single playing, and if you look close right from the clock zzz simbol is chapter logo, if you press it you will be see pic no.3 so this def working but working when you mad your podcast on mac with garage band ! that's why i write about format ids, tags etc

i test your podcast episode 36 then episode 33 and 31 ! bad news my friend no chapters and no pictures only one main pic. but when i test your podcast in downcast app in my iphone wooo i see text i see your pic i see chapters i see everything. so that mean it's working everywhere like mine except iphone and ipad app and now we come to theory of garage band things tags in m4a files. you write that you have done all this in podcast maker not garage band. This is now real mistery to me !
i analyze your file here and you have in last section menu1 and menu 2 so maybe problem is somwhere around this, not in format id because you have ok format id like one that working ok

  • Enhanced podcast in separate window?

I have made a enhanced audio podcast, and the chapter/images show up fine in the iTunes main window. However, if I click the small image to pull up a larger image, the larger image does not update as the podcast continues to play.
In other words, for VideoCasts you can play the video in a separate window fine, but you cannot do something similar for enhanced podcasts.
I have seen similar posts on this forum, but I have not seen any answers yet.
Any news on this issue? Is this the only behavior for iTunes, or can I change iTunes to update the larger window? Is my enhance podcast screwed up somehow and that is causing the problem?

    S.M.--
You're right about the current behavior of the player when it comes to viewing enhanced podcast artwork. If you want to make sure that an expanded player window can handle multiple images, stick to video (for now).

  • How to view enhanced podcast slides on iPad mini

How can I view slides for enhanced podcasts on an iPad Mini?
It seems it used to be possible but a recent iPad update has disabled the functionality.

Thank you for the attempt to help.
    I've also downloaded Downcast.
It does show the album cover but it doesn't actually show the slides as they transition throughout the podcast.

  • Enhanced podcasts not working in iOS 5; new music app keeps crashing

I just updated to iOS5 and regularly view enhanced podcasts.  after the update, I can no longer figure out how to view the enhanced version anymore.  I get the sound, but the image does not change.  Can anybody please help?
on top of this the new music app in iOS5 keeps crashing and I have to restart the iPad all the time.

Having the same issue except for the crashes. Everything seems to be working, just not the way it used to. The enhanced podcasts were great, the ones that I subscribed to changed the backgrounds often and linked to other sites and gave some great info. Now... Nothing!
I have been reading that everyone is having issues with podcasts and the button to get new episodes, or whatever it was called, and this may just be another glitch. I sure wish they could fix it. I listen to podcasts more that I ever listened to music.

  • Enhanced podcasts: Blank white fullscreen image

    Hi all,
I see that in firmware v1.0.2, enhanced podcasts are no supported. However, I am having trouble with a particular enhanced podcast, "History of Photography Podcasts" by Jeff Curto. When I push the center button to get the full screen cover art mode, the iPod only shows a blank white screen. My guess is the images are too large for the iPod Classic to process. However, the images are shown and do change when in the normal art/info initial play screen.
Any ideas? Does my theory sound right?
BTW, one can subscribe to the podcast via the iTunes Store.
    Thanks,
    Steven

I updated to firmware 1.0.3 and now the embedded artwork/images show up in cover art full screen mode.
    Thanks Apple,

  • Can I change the size of my enhanced Podcast or correct the aspect ratio

I would like to be able to embed pictures in a Podcast that are 480x360. As a worst case, I would like them to be 320x240. Is this possible?
When I open my .m4a or .m4b in QuickTime I see that I can adjust the aspect ratio or size. However, as far as I can determine, QuickTime will not let me save the change unless I save into a format other than m4a or m4b.
Saving as a mov eliminates the chapter control which I want to keep.
Does anyone know of a way to fix this limitation?
I'd accept 480x480 if that were possible too!
    Thanks!

    Follow up information:
The aspect ratio appears correct in a video iPod or via the iTunes interface. However, if the same file is played via QuickTime then the aspect ratio is forced to a square.
The overall intent is to view the enhanced PodCast full screen which can be done via QuickTime. The "Now Playing" window in iTunes is too small (Clicking on it to bring up the current slide does not work as the slide is not updated concurrently with the "Now Playing" window.

  • How do I view an enhanced podcast?

I listen to Amateur Traveller and it is an enhanced podcast where I used to see picture content when I played it on my iPhone. How do I view enhanced podcasts with the new app?

I don't think you can anymore. Or at least, not easily. I just published my 11th episode of an enhanced podcast. Simultaneously, I updated the OS on my woefully outdated Iphone. This gave me the latest Podcast app update. As a result, I only see the Episode art and the first chapter art. After that, there are no other images shown even though my chapters are listed in the "Chapter" menu in the app. At first I thought I exported my episode incorrectly, but then I tried an older episode and had the same results. After some research, it appears that Apple has basically pulled its support for enhanced podcasts. This is evident by the fact that their latest updates of Garage Band have omitted podcast tools altogether. If you download the podcast episode into Itunes (on your laptop/desktop), you can still access the enhanced version. This is also true if you download the episode in Safari. But that doesn't make for convenient listening/watching on the go.
Sadly, the days of enhanced podcasts seem to be numbered. I'd love to hear what other enhanced podcast creators/listeners are experiencing with the lack of support for "enhanced" podcasting.

  • Problem burning my enhanced Podcast (.m4a files)

    Hello together,
Since i have updated to the new iTunes 8.2 i've got some real problems, with burning my Podcast Sessions. (itpc://www.marcomendez.ch/?feed=podcast)
For all my subscribers out there with an iPhone or an iPod touch i create all my podcast episodes as enhanced Podcast. So that they can browse it easily. (Track for Track)
Before i installed the new iTunes, burning my mixes and all other m4a mixes and podcasts of other artists have been splitted track to track on the CD. So i could easily switch between the different tracks in my car, when listening. Unfortunately, with the new iTunes version, the whole mix is burnt as one track. So that i get 1 track with 60 minutes music...this is pretty sad... :((
    This anyone have a solution?!

I downloaded the 64-Bit version of iTunes 8.2 for my pc running Vita - found the same problem with enhanced podcasts. Real bummer! Am considering reinstalling 8.11.

  • Enhanced Podcast Playback, with chapters and useable images?

I'm having trouble streaming enhanced podcasts from my iTunes PC to my Apple TV (software v.2.0). The audio plays, but there are no chapter markers show and no images.
If I sync the enhanced podcast I get the images (without any obvious chapter markers). The problem with this is that the images are displaced in the "angled" box next to the playtime line on the AppleTV. This is OK for some images, but useless for some that are presentation slides, e.g. in the excellent Jeff Curto photography history podcasts. http://photohistory.jeffcurto.com/
has anyone any suggestions on how I can view the slides "face on" and preferably full screen?
    Thanks
    Martin

I have been having a similar problem too. I have noticed that the enhanced podcast works on ipods, laptops, etc but I have yet to see it work correctly on Apple TV. The more I look into the problem... the more I begin to believe it is a bug with Apple TV.
I am hoping an answer comes up very soon or even an update.

  • Enhanced Podcasts - opitmal photo sizes

The Nano, 4G and 5G iPods have a different screen sizes, so what's the best size for the pictures in an Enhanced Podcast?
Also, what format is best to avoid re-compression? -- Jpeg?
    Thanks!

I started this post thinking the 4G and nano's ratios were the same, but now I've learned different! The 5G and nano resolutions have the same ratio, ie. a 320x240 picture scaled for the nano will still fill the screen. AND, I believe I ran tests earlier that showed that a picture at a 4:3 ratio will still fill an iPod color 4G screen with no black edges (I believe the left and right edges are chopped off.)
Anyway, the "perfect" solution would be to have three different sets of media (like this guy http://www.ipodsubwaymaps.com/) to prevent re-compression, but outside of that, if this is photos (not map info which has to be pixel perfect) create one 4:3 picture that will match either the nano's or 5G's native resolution. I'm not even certain if you should consider the 4G since, when I last checked, you couldn't get the artwork of an enhanced podcast to stay on the screen, so no one on those pods would see it anyway (unless Apple updates the firmware to handle this one day).
To answer your other question, I believe any image you offer is going to be recompressed by iTunes to show on the iPod, so start with a nice lossless format so the algorithm has a good source to sample from, like PNG.

  • "Enhanced Podcast" error

I have a podcast up on my son's website, http://web.mac.com/bauerkemper
It was created using Garage Band and shared with iWeb via the usual method. Now it is giving an error... a large 'question mark quicktime logo' and says that "This enhanced podcast requires QuickTime 7.0.2 or later. Click Here to download."
The problem is I am using QuickTime 7.1.6. What gives?

    http://web.mac.com/bauerkemper/iWeb/Site/listening%20place/598B3C95-3014-4F06-B1 49-435DE2D41D37_files/dads%20announcement.m4a
    One of your .m4a files.
Seems like the new "security" update in QuickTime doesn't like "enhanced" (.m4a) files.
It's a known "bug" and only Apple can fix it.
The .m4a file is really MPEG-4 audio and shouldn't contain any "video". Manually changing the file extension using the Finder from .m4a to .m4v and editing the iWeb pages by uploading these new files will fix the trouble.
They will now go into iWeb as .m4v format and work as intended but you'll need to make the change using Finder until Apple provides a "fix".

  • Enhanced podcasts production on Windows

Does anyone know how to produce chapters/enhanced podcasts for the Windows platform? I can't find any tools that streamline the production and frankly am a little lost. Any info appreciated!
To be able to advance one song at a time in one .m4a file would be outstanding! I have been waiting to transfer all of my mix CD's/MiniDiscs to my iPod since I bought the blasted thing.

I created an enhanced podcast using Podcast Maker on a Mac notebook. Everything works fine; i.e., it plays on in iTunes on both a Mac and with Windows XP. However, when I download the .m4a file to my Dell, the file is automatically converted to an mp4 file (!?) and then won't open with QuickTime (even the latest version that download last week with the updated iTunes on the Dell). Any solution to this?
