720/30P vs 720/24P

Is shooting in 720/30P a far greater thing than shooting in 720/24P. Most of the stuff we are going to start filming is going to be podcasts, internet commercials, training videos, things like that. Am I fine with just going at 24P or should I stay with 30P?

Watch my P2 Workflow Tutorial first.
And the other difference is the "film look" you get with 24P. 30P will look more video-ish, but not as much as 30i...up to you. Test both and see what you prefer.

  • DVCProHD 720 30p Problems in PPro CS6

I have some DVCProHD 720 30p footage in a QT container that I am unable to use in Premiere CS6. When I import the footage, I get just a white frame throughout the entire footage. This does not occur on any other footage that I have and I do not have this problem in CS5.5.
    Any ideas?

That's true for a few media types.
The solution for those others has been to go back to 5.5 until a patch comes along.
Or, get your hands on the originals.

  • 720/30p footage -- how does iMovie handle progressive scan?

Does iMovie work well with progressive scan or does it like everything to be 60i? I have a 720/30p or 1080/60i camcorder, a 720p native projector and looking at AppleTV which is 540p @ 30fp. For best quality with iMovie and AppleTV, which is best to shoot at 720/30p or 1080/60i?

    hey there cmd,
    iMovie will handle Hi-def video @ standard frame rates: 1920 x 1080 60i, 1280 x 720 30p in the USA.
Apple TV supports the following: TV compatibility
    Compatible with enhanced-definition or high-definition widescreen TVs capable of 1080p/1080i 60/50Hz, 720p 60/50Hz, 576p 50Hz (PAL format), or 480p 60Hz.
some people prefer 720p for sports & 1080i for other type of viewing--movies,TV shows, etc...
    good luck.

  • 30p fps to 24p fps when no interlace is involved

Hello: I've shot my clip in 720p60, then uncompressed it, edited it in FCP in a 29.97fps timeline sequence, export (using QuickTime Conversion) as H.264 at 29.97fps and the result is very smooth. When I export as H.264 at 24fps the result has a slightly jerky motion (possibly because every 5th frame has been deleted ???). What is the best method to convert from 30p fps to 24p fps (no interlace is involved) ? Thank-You, MLR

Broadcast stations won't EVER want to air things in 24 fps. Here in America, when they get 24fps material they do a process called telecine and ADD (or Combine) frames to get it to 30 anyway.
    Leave it at 30.
Now, if you edited in 24 with native 24 material that would be a different story. You could add the telecine cadence onto your video and make it just right with a 'film-look'.
Here's what I suggest you do...
Call up MTV and ask them to send you their BROADCAST SPECS (often called a red book... or white book). They'll be happy to point you in the direction of it.
Also do it for PBS and maybe Discovery Channel.
Read EVERY word. Will be an education you couldn't EVER pay for. Might also open your eyes to how far over your head you might be.
    Good luck...

  • Difference between RSP-720 and SUP-720 on 7600

    Hi all,
I wonder what's the big difference between RSP-720 and SUP-720. both have almost the same feature set, performance and also same price. Anyone can explain in detail?
This can also be applied to difference between 6500 and 7600 and narrow difference between routers and switches these days.

There are tons of differences between the RSP and the SUP 720.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps368/product_data_sheet0900aecd8057f3b6.html
Look @ the " Hardware Enhancements over Supervisor Engine 720" section
The 6500 and 7600 are diverging in terms of software release support on 12.2(33)SX* for 6500 and 12.2(33)SR* for 7600 which means the feature sets will be diametrically opposite.
E.g. VSS on Cat6k's is not available on 7600's

  • 720 24pn to 1080 24p upconvert,  and DNxHD or QT uncompressed

I've finished my P2, 720 24pn documentary in Avid and want to deliver a 1080 24p master on hard drive to put to HDCam tape for a Da Vinci color correction.
I've exported a quicktime reference to After Effects and nested the 720 project in a 1920 x 1080 composition (to include all the 4k photos and titles).
Is this the best way to upconvert 720 to 1080? It looks great...
And is using the DNxHD 175 10 bit codec for the quicktime export as good as an uncompressed 10 bit quicktime? The resulting file size on a 100 minute file is 150 GB's vs 1.5 TB's.....
I have searched and searched the forum, but it's not easy to find the Truth!!

FYI for anyone wondering in the future, this is what my Da Vinci artist said:
"At my day job, doing HD spots for Sony Pictures (who are very particular about picture quality), the editors are also using Avid's DNX compression. The settings they are using (at 1080 lines) are: 175X for 23.98 and 220X for 59.94. We've run tons of resolution tests and the clients find this acceptable quality for big media buys (Superbowl, American Idol, etc.)."
Another said that if my original content was film he would go uncompressed QT, but since it was P2, DNxHD 175 is the way to go.
And this article (now a year old) evaluated DNxHD vs ProRes422 and Uncompressed.....
    http://www.studiodaily.com/blog/?p=97
    excerpt:
As a control, I used Apples Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 codec. I rendered the animation to the ProRes 422 (HQ), ProRes 422, Avid DNxHD 175, Avid DNxHD 115, and Avid DNxHD 36 codecs. (Note: The DNxHD flavors are specific to 1080/24p format video. The 30i versions would be DNxHD 220 and 145.)
After re-importing the results in After Effects, I placed each file in a composition along with the Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 version and used the Difference transfer mode to illustrate where the compressed image varied from the uncompressed. The results were quite surprising.
The DNxHD 175 files difference from the uncompressed was barely visible to the naked eye, but the ProRes 422 (HQ) codec showed significant differences. In fact, in my test, the DNxHD 115 codec also outperformed the ProRes (HQ).

  • File type when recording HVX200 at 720/30p

When I've captured a file using OnLocation and I'm ready to import it into PP CS3 would I use the P2 preset? The footage isn't in the P2 MXF format but would that matter? What exactly is OnLocation recording? Is it the full DVCPROHD 4.2.2. format just in an AVI or MOV wrapper? Or is it some kind on intermediate codec? And if I don't use the P2 preset what should I use? Thanks

I can't tell you which preset to use, but yes, OnLocation is giving you the full DVCProHD format, without using an intermediate codec.

  • Strange playback - dvcpro hd 720/30p

    shot with hvx-200
    captured onto 16gb p2
i have both shot, captured, and log and transferred footage with this camera before today - never had this issue
footage plays fine in log and transfer window - when ingested, video plays back as seemingly slo-mo in viewer/canvas windows, with audio being correct sounding but truncated.
i've read where there is a firmware issue, but nothing has changed since the last time i did the very same process with no errors.
    any help appreciated!

yes - it all matches - no rendering needed or the popup question
and the reference to scene 5 was bc the default scene 6 setting is 24pa i believe...
it's ok - we used another video i made instead. thanks for the questions though...

  • Converting 30p/60p to 24p

    hello
i am trying to convert my 60p footage from my Canon 7D to 24p to get that "film look". If i simply drag a 60p clip into a 24p timeline, will it automatically convert it to 24p?
This seems to make sense, but Philip Bloom on his web site has this long process of conforming it to 24p in Cinema Tools, then speeding that back up in Compressor to match the original timing. Does it have to be done this way or can i just drag it in?
    thanks
heres the link for philip blooms workflow:
    http://philipbloom.co.uk/tutorials/canon-5dmkii-tutorials/how-to-convert-canon-5 dmk2-footage-from-30p-to-24p/

be aware, the "film look" has much less to do with the frame rate and more to do with cinematographic elements like depth of field, lighting, and grain. Even if you convert 30 to 24, you still had a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second, so the individual frames have less motion involved than if you had a shutter speed of 1/48th of a second.

  • Shooting in 30p vs. 24P vs 24P advanced?   / sequence settings

I'm using a Panasonic DVX 100 camera. (i'm new to it) Sorry if these are naïve questions, but I need help.
Not sure what the difference is if I should shoot in 30p/24p/24p advanced?
If I shot in any of the three, do I use different settings when I import?
Also, how do I set the sequence settings for the best results?
    I appreciate your guidance...

Whether you shoot in 30p or 24p depends on what your style of filming. Hands down 24p is going to look the most like modern day cinema, but you need to make sure there is plenty of light, and also watch a bunch of movement. Basically you are looking at the difference between packing 24 frames in a second, or 30 frames in a second. Most of the time, so long as you aren't doing massive pans you will be fine with 24p. For me, I do a bunch of shoulder mounted filming, so I use 30p to make sure I don't get any "slideshow" effects if I decide to slow it down or maybe pan across the horizon. If you film in 24p, you want to capture in 24p. You can do an easy setup for HDV 1080p 24 or 720p 24 depending on what reso you are filming at.
Usually the question comes between 24p and 60i. If you are ever going to have a bunch of movement, or intend on doing slow motion at all, 60i is a much better result. You can always color the film later to get a cinematic effect. Hope this is helpful. (and true..)

  • Highest Quality

    Hi guys,
I have a Sony camera HDR-SR11 and I am shooting on 1920x1080i 60fps at 16Mbps (highest possible quality on that camera).
How can I keep the highest quality through the whole process of importing/editing/re-compressing?
I see my videos are already being imported at 1080p 30fps... Is this good? Can I import at 1080i 60fps? Is this better?
To re-compress, should I use the iMovie hidef export or export via QT? Which one is better? Should choose 16Mbps when exporting? Any benefit going higher?
    Thanx

Your camera shoots MPEG-4 AVC/H.264. Open up one of those files in QT and see what the frame rate says (command-i)
iMovie will convert to what it wants/needs on import
I would shoot video in every format you camera shoots export that footage how you think you are going to be using then, use the one you want that looks best to you. Depending on what you are outputting to as you final destination each type format has an advantages.
Even though my camera will shoot 1080/60i, 1080/30p, 1080/24p, 720/60p, 720/30p, and 720/24p I shoot 720p30 because the files are smaller easier to work with, exports well to the web, and meets my needs. Also while you can certainly tell the difference between 1080 and 720 I had an old DV 480i camera that shot better footage than one of my cheap 720p cameras and certainly better than ANY 720p phone My point is size and rate is not everything. There are also people out there that will not shoot at ANY rate but 24. Why? Because they like that "film" look. Something iMovie now supports BTW.
Not sure what you are talking about on "Final Compression" in iMovie you can share out; small medium, large, 720 or 1080 unless you run a custom export.

  • AVC Playback problem in Premiere CS4

    Hi Everyone,
I recently graduated from college and am trying my hand at being a freelance videographer.  Before now I've just used my small camcorder for all of my projects, but I wanted to move up to working in HD.  So I just bought a brand new HD camera and was really excited to start using it.
I got a few shots, downloaded them onto my computer from the camera chip, and tried to import them in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.  The files imported fine, but when they playback on the source monitor and the program monitor (after I drag it into the timeline) the pixels are jittery, in the wrong position, and sometimes playing backwards.  It makes the footage look fuzzy and chunky, and it's really distracting when I go to edit.  How do I fix this?
The footage is fine when I play it with Windows Media player.
I thought maybe I choose the wrong preset when I opened a new sequence, but I've tried changing that to multiple different settings and nothing changed.  Most of the settings I tried were AVC-Intra & AVCHD.
It looked like a few people were having similar problems, but with different circumstances as mine.  And I couldn't tell if they were able to fix the problem yet.  I really want to be able to use this new camera for my upcoming projects and I was hoping someone could help.

  • Premiere Pro project setup and exporting 16x9 to 4:3 letterbox

I need to export a 16x9, 720/30p CS3 project, for final viewing on a 4:3 projector in letterbox. *This project is about to kick off with a VERY short deadling and the shooters keep changing their mind about whether they're going to shoot in 720/30p or 720/60p. I need to plan for both to be safe. How will this effect things in my original 16x9 project setup if they give me both 720/30p and 720/60p video? And what about exporting for letterbox viewing in 4:3 if this occurs? I mean, if I start a project in 720/30p with CS3 and they bring me 720/60p video as well as 720/30p video, will I have to start a new project and start editing everything all over again, and vice versa? Also, how will this effect my final letterboxed 16x9 product? **I also have to provide this to the customer in 16x9 DVD format.

  • HVX200- 720/60P in 23.97 timeline... ramp problems.

I am having difficulty trying to modify the speed of my timelapse shots (1F per 1sec) that were taken in the 720/60P mode in a 23.97 timeline. The clips play fine (after rendering) when I do not modify the speed.
Basically most of the project is being shot in the 720/24PN mode but I did a few timelapses with the 720/60P mode that I wanted to ramp up, but when I put it in the timeline, modified the speed and rendered it the clip goes well then stops about 3/4 of the way through.
Is there a specific modify speed % for this situation? Would I be better off trying to do the timelapse at 720/30P for this specific timeline?
Understanding that I can not use the intervalometer function (1 frame per 1 second) in 24PN or 24P.
    anybody? thanks.
    g5 quad   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

To avoid glitches with different modes in the same project, I edit the section with the odd mode (your 720/60P) and then export it as a separate clip into the mode you want to use in your timeline (your 720/24P). It cuts down on your editing options later, but it also cuts down on hassles especially when exporting the final file.

  • Capturing HDV 720/60p?

Can Final Cut even capture HDV 720/60p nativly? I've been trying to capture some footage recorded on a JVC GY-HD250U with a JVC BR-HD50U deck. The footage was intended for a 720/30p project, but I couldn't capture it that way. The only workaround I found was to capture it into the project in the Apple Intermediate Codec HDV 720p30. What other workflows / solutions are there for this, if any?

I read a little about this JVC camera and I wasn't sure you can get 60p onto the tape, it seemed like you could get 60p out in analogue.
Quality is something you should decide. I think the best conversion quality comes when you convert using a completely digital hardware solution.
I am not the person to comment on Multicam editing as I have not had enough experience and I haven't really got it to stay in sync when I tried it. BTW The Ripple downloadable Multicam tutorials are great. I will say DVC Pro renders very quickly with my setup, I don't have enough experience with PR yet to comment.
