Converting 30p/60p to 24p

hello
i am trying to convert my 60p footage from my Canon 7D to 24p to get that "film look". If i simply drag a 60p clip into a 24p timeline, will it automatically convert it to 24p?
This seems to make sense, but Philip Bloom on his web site has this long process of conforming it to 24p in Cinema Tools, then speeding that back up in Compressor to match the original timing. Does it have to be done this way or can i just drag it in?
thanks
heres the link for philip blooms workflow:
http://philipbloom.co.uk/tutorials/canon-5dmkii-tutorials/how-to-convert-canon-5 dmk2-footage-from-30p-to-24p/

be aware, the "film look" has much less to do with the frame rate and more to do with cinematographic elements like depth of field, lighting, and grain. Even if you convert 30 to 24, you still had a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second, so the individual frames have less motion involved than if you had a shutter speed of 1/48th of a second.

Im using a Panasonic HMC150 and shot some footage in 720/60p so I can try out the slow motion effect. How do I convert the clips shot in 720/60p to 24p using Final Cut Pro? I don't know how to set the timeline up to be 24p. Is it just a matter of getting the footage in the timeline and changing the speed?

YOu use Cinema Tools. Tutorial found here:

  • Black frames at the end of an exported file when converting from 60p to 24p

I have another export issue that I can't figure out.
I import footage I shot at 23.98fps (on a JVC HD100) using a Kona LH card at 59.94fps DVCPro HD, in which it has a 2:3 cadence. I need to make files that are actually 23.98p DVCProHD. Unfortunately, when I export in Final Cut from the 59.94 original, the new 23.98 file has all of the image, exported correctly, followed by a number of black frames such that the total number of frames in the exported file equals the number of frames in the original file. That is:
    If the original 59.94 file was 3s long, that is 60 * 3 = 180 frames. The exported 23.98 file also has 180 frames, but only 3s of image = 3 * 24 = 72 frames, followed by 180 - 72 = 108 frames = 4s 12frames of black.
How can I prevent this from happening, and end up with an exported file that is (e.g.) just the 3s of image, and not 7.5s of which 4.5s are black?
It's true that I can manually clip this black off, but I need to do many clips as a batch, and would really not have to change one clip at a time. It is also true that I can do a batch in compressor, and that this process does not suffer this problem -- that is, there is no extra black -- however, there is another problem: the original 59.94 DVCProHD files are actually 1280x720 with square pixels; the files exported from FCP via the KONA DVCProHD codec maintain this true HD proportion, but the ones exprted through compressor (which does not appear to support the KONA LH implementation of DVCProHD as an option) have the size 960x720 with anamorphic pixels, and I would rather keep the original size. Thus, I would rather export from fcp. If anyone has any insight into how I might resolve this....
    Thanks,
    Robert Schaller

Thanks. If I understand you correctly, it does seem to export correctly if I paste the 59.94 clip into a 23.98 sequence (you can't nest sequences that have different time bases) and export from there, and it doesn't even have to specify square pixels, etc.: the AJA codec implementation seems to take care of that. There is no longer any extra black, so, per file, that gives the right result.
That, however, is only one part of the problem, though a significant part. Next is, I really would like to do this as a batch process, as I tend to have many clips to do at one time. As soon as I try any kind of batch export, I end up with one of two problems:
    1) if I try to batch export from fcp, I'm back to having extra black frames, or
    2) if I try to batch export with compressor, I get 960x720 files.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to get the right files in a batch, that would be the next step. Is fcp scriptable? And, if so, can you write a script that takes a clip, pastes it into a blank 23.98 DVCPro timeline, sets the correct in and out points (i.e, in at the beginning and out 1 before the end), exports it with a specified codec and time base, with a name based on the source clip, and then repeats that as needed?
    Thanks for any input --

  • 30p fps to 24p fps when no interlace is involved

Hello: I've shot my clip in 720p60, then uncompressed it, edited it in FCP in a 29.97fps timeline sequence, export (using QuickTime Conversion) as H.264 at 29.97fps and the result is very smooth. When I export as H.264 at 24fps the result has a slightly jerky motion (possibly because every 5th frame has been deleted ???). What is the best method to convert from 30p fps to 24p fps (no interlace is involved) ? Thank-You, MLR

Broadcast stations won't EVER want to air things in 24 fps. Here in America, when they get 24fps material they do a process called telecine and ADD (or Combine) frames to get it to 30 anyway.
    Leave it at 30.
Now, if you edited in 24 with native 24 material that would be a different story. You could add the telecine cadence onto your video and make it just right with a 'film-look'.
Here's what I suggest you do...
Call up MTV and ask them to send you their BROADCAST SPECS (often called a red book... or white book). They'll be happy to point you in the direction of it.
Also do it for PBS and maybe Discovery Channel.
Read EVERY word. Will be an education you couldn't EVER pay for. Might also open your eyes to how far over your head you might be.
    Good luck...

  • From 60p to 24p...

Hi guys, with new FCX how do you now conform 60p into 24p? Thanks a bunch !

    @RedHavoc
Yes. I downloaded Final Cut Pro X this morning and created a project with a frame rate of 24p. I imported footage shot on my Canon 7D @60fps. I dropped a clip in the timeline, selected it, went to Modify>Retime>Conform Speed and it retimed the footage to 40% of it's original speed.

  • Panasonic TM900 Owners Who Successfully Converted 1080 60p Video for FCPX

I am looking for Panasonic TM900 owners only please!!
(Please don't respond unless you have converted 1080 60p video from a TM900 camcorder)
Thanks to Tom Wolsky, it appears there is a resolution for how to get 1080 60p video into FCPX that is like quality with no degradation via ClipWrap.
What I am looking for is other TM900 owners who have successfully done this and are pleased with the results, i.e. no degradation in video quality, no weird video artifacts added or random blank green frames added every second or so.
What did you use, i.e. ClipWrap, Aunsoft Final Mate, etc?
Was the process simple or were there a lot of "tuning" steps required?
I am at a loss here because I love my TM900 especially with 1080 60p video and was hoping the AVCCAM Importer would be the saviour we all thought it would but unfortunately it is only for Qucktime 7 and Final Cut Pro, not FCPX.
I am trying to figure out what to do, purchase FCXP assuming you guys have had great success converting or wrapping the .mts files, buy the add on product or purchase another program which has this support built in, i.e. Adobe Premier Pro or worse yet, go back to my PC.
I just want to be able to make simple edits with transitions, create a nice DVD menu and output to Blue-ray.
    Appreciate some feedback!!

I used final mate to help make MTS videos compatible by mac as I do not want the immediate rendering when importing videos to FCP. If you want to burn MTS files to blu ray disc. Why not try Toast? Refer to this post:

  • How to convert 60p to 24p?

We are shooting with the HDX-900. Mostly 720p. Our deck is the
Panasonic AJ-1400. I'm looking at wanting to convert footage shot at
    60p to 50% slomo.
    Anyone have any ideas?

In the Browser, does it say 59.94 for the frame rate? If so, then it is some hiccup. I hit this every now and then. In this case I would then use Cinema Tools to OPEN the clip and then CONFORM it to 23.98fps. COPY IT FIRST...it modifies the clip destructively...meaning it will be slow motion now forever...no going back.

  • Converting 29.97 to 24p after transfer/transcoding

    Hey guys,
I recently log and transferred a ton of HD footage I shot with my Canon Vixia HF S100. The video was shot in 24p, but I just recently realized all of the clips were apparantely transferred in 29.97(Apple Prores 422).
Is sticking them all in compressor and reencoding them into Apple Prores 422 in 23.976(with reverse telecine) the best way to go about the 24p conversion? I won't lose any image quality as opposed to directly log and transferring straight to 24p, right?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for you guys' input. I did a little research and found that the camera does not flag the footage.
    (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?173326-Canon-HF-S10-24p-Cinema-Mode-Doe s-it-have-pulldown-flags-Is-it-3-2-or-2-3-3-2)
So I captured all of my video as 29.97 and need to do as mentioned both above and in the article: convert my footage in Compressor into 24p but with matching compression settings. OR Jes Deinterlacer which I'll be looking into in a moment.
I have another question regarding frame rates. If I remember correctly, I started shooting in 30p and after a few minutes realized I wanted to be in '24p cinema mode,' so I switched. Is there a way to find and tell the 5% of footage shot in 30p from the rest, once all footage is imported in 29.97?

  • Reverse 3:2 Pulldown to convert AVCHD PF24 to 24P proper?

    Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know if Final Cut Pro X has the ability to natively convert video shot in PF24 and convert it to a true 24 frames per second? Proper de-interlacing is a must.
I have a Canon HF20 and I love it except for the fact that it doesn't have a native 24P mode. My old Adobe Premiere CS5 flow I set up has a few 3rd party scripts that can chew on the video overnight and spit out beautiful 24P footage after doing a proper 3:2 reverse pulldown, but the process takes forever and the output AVIs are massive... too big to be practical to be used on my Macbook Pro.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Mike

I doubt FCP X can do it but I don't know and I'm sure someone who does will correct me if I'm wrong. That being said, there's a way to do it that requires converting the video with Compressor first. So you'd need to spend the extra US$49 for Compressor if you don't have it.
There is an Apple Support Article on how to do this same thing for the Canon HV20 which shoots HDV PF24. The article is a few years old and focuses on FCP 6 and the version of Compressor that shipped with it. So you might need to change a few things if you're using a newer version of Compressor. I haven't tried it with Compressor 4 but it should still work.

  • Is it Possible to Convert 60i Footage to 24p?

I was wondering if it's possible to convert footage shot in 60i to 24p and if it'll look good.
Like, if I took 60i footage and put it out at 24 FPS in progressive scan through compressor, would it take out the correct frames? Or would it look all weird?
Just curious if it looks good and if there's a good way to do it.

Probably your best bet would be http://www.nattress.com and his standards converter. Moves 60i to 24.
    Good luck,

  • Can Cinema tools 4.0 convert 29.97 to 24p?

Is cinema tools 4.0 a good method for converting 29.97 footage to 24p and are there side effect that need attention due to the shutter speed difference?
The HVX200 footage for my short film was accidentally shot at 1080i60 / 29.97 fps when I wanted it to be 24 progressive native... the setting may have gone to default after we turned off the camera.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!!!
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Final Cut Studio 2

    Have you found a solution?
I shot everything in my feature in 24pA and one of my scene was shot 29.97. Must have changed after changing a tape and possible re-powering camera.
I have tried converting the material in cinema tools but the footage was slowed down. I sped the footage up 125% and now the image isn't normal.

  • Shooting in 30p vs. 24P vs 24P advanced?   / sequence settings

I'm using a Panasonic DVX 100 camera. (i'm new to it) Sorry if these are naïve questions, but I need help.
Not sure what the difference is if I should shoot in 30p/24p/24p advanced?
If I shot in any of the three, do I use different settings when I import?
Also, how do I set the sequence settings for the best results?
    I appreciate your guidance...

Whether you shoot in 30p or 24p depends on what your style of filming. Hands down 24p is going to look the most like modern day cinema, but you need to make sure there is plenty of light, and also watch a bunch of movement. Basically you are looking at the difference between packing 24 frames in a second, or 30 frames in a second. Most of the time, so long as you aren't doing massive pans you will be fine with 24p. For me, I do a bunch of shoulder mounted filming, so I use 30p to make sure I don't get any "slideshow" effects if I decide to slow it down or maybe pan across the horizon. If you film in 24p, you want to capture in 24p. You can do an easy setup for HDV 1080p 24 or 720p 24 depending on what reso you are filming at.
Usually the question comes between 24p and 60i. If you are ever going to have a bunch of movement, or intend on doing slow motion at all, 60i is a much better result. You can always color the film later to get a cinematic effect. Hope this is helpful. (and true..)

  • 720/30P vs 720/24P

Is shooting in 720/30P a far greater thing than shooting in 720/24P. Most of the stuff we are going to start filming is going to be podcasts, internet commercials, training videos, things like that. Am I fine with just going at 24P or should I stay with 30P?

Watch my P2 Workflow Tutorial first.
And the other difference is the "film look" you get with 24P. 30P will look more video-ish, but not as much as 30i...up to you. Test both and see what you prefer.
    And Jerry is a hoot!

  • 60p to 24p Pulldown Conversion - Best Settings?

Our studio recently purchased a new camera for some run-and-gun shooting. Unfortunately, it does not support 24p natively, only 60p & 60i. It does, however, support shutter speeds from 1/2 all the way to 1/4000. What advice can you give regarding pulldown conversion into a 24p project, both for camera settings and FCPX?
Please note that I'm looking for 1:1 speed, NOT slow-mo.

Shane, I understand the difference in motion. And as I said, it was not my intention to capture at the frame rate that I did. With regards to the slight stutteryness, I'm comparing one of these problem clips to an actual 24pN clip from an earlier part of the shoot. I put both in the 23.97 timeline, but the one captured at 60p feels like it should still run slightly smoother or with a little bit more motion blur maybe. I think I'm simply looking for the best way to cheat that "look" back into the footage.
Your post below is right. Cinema Tools is not a good option for that as this doesn't really have much to do with 2:3 3:2 pulldown type operations and it won't let me conform the footage anyway.

  • Conform Speed- 60p to 24p

Hi guys, one feature that nobody seems to be talking about is the "conform speed" from the speed-popup-thingy, I love I can conform to 24p for true slow mo when I shoot 60p (avoiding to go to Cinema tools, not to mention the native ingest of my DSL footage while transcoding in the bg)
But I'm not sure if one should use the "rate conform" of this conformed clip (in the inspector) at the default  'floor' or at 'nearest neighbor'.
What would act like a simple frame by frame conforming without introducing any artifacts? In my tests it seems that "nearest neighbor" is more appropriate but I could be wrong...
    Any ideas?
