720p23.976 DVCPro HD to an SD DVD

720p23.976 DVCPro HD movie to an SD DVD?
I need to deliver a SD DVD in NTSC and PAL.
Any suggestions?

The results usually work well, but you may need to run some tests.
Also do not use Pan & Scan, only use Letterbox (and not Pan & Scan/Letterbox) unless you have set the footage properly for Pan & Scan, Pan & Scan should not be used.

  • DVCPro 50 24p @ 29.97 - Pulldown?

    Hello,
I'm working on a project that was shot with the Panasonic SDX-900 at 24p.
I captured the footage with the DV50 Easy Set-up at 29.97 and I'll be outputting to DVCPro tape as well as DVD.
I've read through the forum on how it should be captured and edited, but I'm still unclear on Pulldown. Do I need to actually do anything with that in order to finish, or is the footage I captured fine in the 29.97 timeline without adding or removing pulldown? I apologize, but I just don't get it.
I read something about "flicker frames" and cutting on the 5th frame and that's a little unclear as well. I did notice when I exported a full-res Quicktime of the project that occasionally there would be a flash frame of the previous shot if I had used a clip from it's very first frame, so I went back and adjusted the in-points of those clips.
I'm giving the project to another post facility to online, and I want to make sure it's prepped as well as possible, so if anyone can tell me if there's any processing of the footage that I need to do before that I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks a lot,
    Shona

  • Why Does Premiere CS6 Output 29.97fps when Encoding to 23.976 fps?

My project is XDCam EX, 23.976 fps. I exported to DVD MPEG and both VLC and Windows Explorer details report 29.97fps file format.
I downloaded the latest updates two days ago. Just wondering why the encoder refuses to leave 23.976fps footage and project alone and convert it to 29.97? Render settings are clearly 23.976fps. Bug?

i didn't read the forum i linked, so yes, i was wrong in the way adobe converts it to 29.97, pulldown vs added frame.  the output file will be reported as 29.97, but mediainfo can see the flags and reports it as 23.976 with 2:3 pulldown.  when i look at the .m2v file from premiere, frame by frame i can see the two interlaced frames from pulldown. so are those true interlaced frames or does the media player program generate those interlaced frames as a result of the flag telling it to?
Telecine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Wiki:
Reverse telecine (a.k.a. inverse telecine (IVTC), reverse pulldown)
Some DVD players, line doublers, and personal video recorders are designed to detect and remove 2:3 pulldown from telecined video sources, thereby reconstructing the original 24 frame/s film frames. This technique is known as “reverse” or “inverse” telecine. Benefits of reverse telecine include high-quality non-interlaced display on compatible display devices and the elimination of redundant data for compression purposes.
my understanding is the interlaced frames are real. it is 29.97fps, with 2 of 5 as interlaced. the reverse pulldown reconstructs a single frame from the two interlaced, dropping the fps to the original 24p. is this not the case with adobe's pulldown?

  • DVCPRO HD vs Uncompressed HD for best RT edit experience?

Assume best available MAC and raid.
Considering Pana HVX200 P2 DVCPRO-HD source and HD DVD finish, what is the better workflow in terms of ease of edit, best realtime performance, and finish to HD DVD?
    1. Edit [native] DVCPRO-HD, then ?? to prep for HD DVD; or
    2. Upconvert DVCPRO-HD to uncompressed HD, then ?? to prep for HD DVD.
    BACKGROUND:
I've been editing SD on PC (Premiere and Edius) for many years and am considering a move to [can't believe I'm saying this] MAC/FCP for the HD realm. Target is high quality HD DVD delivery of event video (weddings, etc.) for customer view on their HDTVs.
Currently use Sony VX2000 for DV; Looking seriously at the new Pana HVX200 for HD.
    Dell P670   Windows XP Pro

Thanks David. I'm aware of all this. For future extensibility, the MAC and storage I will purchase will accomodate anything up to Uncompressed 2K HD. However, for the near-term I will be sourcing only DVCPRO-HD (from the HVX200 via the options you cited).
Let me rephrase my specific questions:
    1. EDIT: Given MAC/storage/monitor that will well accomodate uncompressed, is the *FCP edit experience* better with native DVCPRO-HD or uncompressed (though it may be counter-intuitive, the FCP manual seems to suggest uncompressed provides a better RT edit experience). Has anyone out there experienced both ways?
    2. AUTHOR to HD DVD (whether Blu Ray or 'HDDVD'): Is it easier/faster to go from DVCPRO-HD timeline or 10-bit Uncompressed 4:2:2 timeline to Hd DVD? Again, has anyone out there had both experiences?
    Thanks!

  • Inaccurate Previews with Matrox MXO2 mini

It took me a while to get the settings right, but I was finally able to watch After Effects previews on my output monitor through my new Matrox MXO2 Mini. Unfortunately, however, they don't look the same as the preview on my computer monitor in the composition window. Yeah, I know, that's the point to look different, but it actually looks worse on the Matrox. Not just a little bad, but really bad. The colors are off, there's bad pixel aliasing, and if I use something like a 'blur' effect, the pixels all the way to the edge of the blur are full-brightness, then drop off to nothing.
If I turn on 'Alpha Only' it looks better (actually has gradients of grey now), but loses all color information.
    Here are my system specs:
    Mac Pro 2x2.27GHz
    8GB RAM
    OSX 10.6.6
    Matrox MXO2 mini (desktop)
    fw 11.1
    sw 2.1.1.0050
    AE 10.0.1.19
I'm working in a DVCPRO-HD 720p23.976 comp in After Effects, and using the Matrox's WYSISYG settings as follows:
    Video format: 720 p 23.98 8-bit
    Scale to fit: yes
    Alpha only: no
my monitor is connected over the HDMI output and is 1920x1200.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Ok, it's definately outputting straight RGB rather than premultiplied.
Where is this kind of thing set? Has anyone have any experience with other video output cards?
    Cheers

  • Windows 8 - Slow Quicktime Prores Performance - Timeline delay

    Hello all,
I am a long time Adobe user. For a long llong time I used it solely on mac but recently have been slowly making the move to Windows for everything (previously just for fun).
Anyway I am having some issues getting quicktime to work well on Windows, even on the very same computer that the same project works fine in OS X. I know quicktime is "native" to apple and osx, but in talking to other windows users my experience isn't normal.
First, I am on Premiere Pro CS6 up to date, Windows 8 Pro (and os x 10.8.4), up to date, on a 2008 Mac Pro 8x 2.8ghx 16GB ram, with a gtx 680 (4gb). GPU drivers are also up to date. I use eSet Smart Security for my antivirus. I have made sure that my project/media drive as well as the ssd I use for the media cache are ignored by the eset realtime scanning. Quicktime (pro) and the ProRes codecs are installed. Not a superstar rig but still a capable machine.
The project in question is a short compilation of stock footage. There is a total of 25 clips, the longest of which is 4 minutes, the shortest a few seconds. All are quicktimes, most are prores, some are photo-jpeg and there are a few other codes in there as well. All 720p or 1080p. They are edited down to about 1 minute in the timeline, using a 720p23.976 preset.
On my mac, everything is as expected. I can smoothly play back my timeline, and quickly open clips in the viewer panel. This is instant. Occasionally on the first open of a clip I will get a brief "media pending" screen but never more than a few seconds and only when the clip is first accessed.
In windows, however, there is a very long delay when choosing many but not all clips -- both to open in the viewer OR even just to select or scrub in the timeline. If I have my playhead parked on 1 clip, then move it to another, there will be a delay of anywhere from 5-10 seconds before I get an image. I can see my media cache showing some activity, and sometimes I get the 'media pending' screen during this. Audio uslly works during this time, but no image. If I leave the clip and come right back to it, it will be instant, but if I go to a few clips, when I come back there will be another delay.
It seems like something is going on with my media cache, but only in Windows. I have formatted and reset it to no avail. It seems odd that on mac it would "remember" that it has loaded clips from the cache but on windows it has trouble with the same clips and has to re-cache frequently.
I can try to get a screen grab of the behavior if it will help. I can say that I don't think it is isolated to ProRes because I have had this problem in the past with a project that only used animation clips. I haven't had time to try with a whole project, but I don't seem to have the same problem with avi's, but I need to stay cross platform for now and most people I work with use ProRes.

I have an ATI/AMD FirePro  v4800 1GB GDDR5 with the latest drivers for this card (8.982.8.3)
Is my video card not compatible?
this slow redraw of the timeline happened way before
and everytime a new driver version came up I had installed it but that didn't change anything.
Only with aero disabled I would enjoy a fast timeline scrolling in windows 7. (now, not possible in windows 8 pro)
Bill how can you explain this? Same video card and everytime with the SAME NEW drivers, aero on=slow timeline, aero off=fast timeline!
Is there some kind of a fix that we can always wait from our graphics card companies to include to new drivers??? (for how long???)
or maybe is it all up to Adobe and its own programme?
Are we all supposed to have old video display drivers?
Can someone make some kind of a poll for people who have this problem to vote to see where this problem apears, in which configurations, in which graphics cards? (assuming they have latest drivers)
so we all finally know what/where is the problem.
I love the premiere elements series and thats why I want this to be solved.

  • Preset DVCPRO HD 720P to DVD SD

I just want to know the preset to burn sd dvd pal wtih dvcpro hd 720 FinalCut Source.
did you think that i need to use filters.
    thanks

export your self contained movie at your current, DVCProHD settings.
Take that clip to your friend's. Import it into his FCP.
Create a 10-bit Uncompressed sequence, using the easy setup. Put your HD clip on the timeline. Render. Print.

  • DVCPRO HD edit to DVD SD

Does anyone know the best settings to produce an SD DVD from a DVCRO HD 16:9 sequence in FCP using Compressor? This is a 45 min. program and I'm trying to get the highest quality conversion possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"SDI and HD SDI are cable connections types, like RCA and BNC. So this really doesn't mean anything...unless you are connecting to a DVD Recorder that has those connection types."
What I would ultimately do with the project is take the files to a friend who has a Mac Pro and a box that outputs SDI to dub to broadcast DigiBeta, and it outputs HD-SDI to dub to an HD machine. It'll never go back to a DVCPRO HD tape.
The reason I had asked the question is that I read somewhere that it's much more processor intensive to edit in a format such as DVCPRO or HDV, and it's much faster to convert everything to ProRes 422, for example. And that you also have more flexibility with its "uncompressed HD quality".
    That's not true, I guess?
Also, I am considering buying an iMac for this. Can the firewire bus handle capturing DVCPRO HD from that camera and writing to a firewire drive? Or is it better to capture to the internal drive and then copy the files over to the firewire drive later?
    Thanks for your help.

  • DVCPRO HD/Apple Pro Res 422 HQ slow to transcode to DVD on 8 core Mac Pro's

I've been conducting some tests and narrowed down the slow transcode times I'm having specifically to DVCPRO HD or Apple Pro Res 422 HQ clips when transcoding to 90-150 MPEG-2 DVD Presets. These formats take forever to render on a Mac Pro 8 core when compared to a G5 or a quad 2.66GHz Mac Pro. DV and DVCPRO 50 are transcoding at very fast speeds on a Mac Pro 8 core. I would like other Mac Pro 8 core users out there to confirm this... that way Compressor developers can do soemthing about these slow MPEG-2 transcode times. A 6 minute DVCPRO HD clip is taking 52 minutes to transcode to a MPEG-2 90 minute DVD Best Preset in Compressor. This is in comparison to 20 minutes on a G5 and 10 minutes on a Mac Pro 2.66GHz for the same transcode. This problem does not happen while transcoding to MPEG-1 or HD DVD MPEGs.
    I've tried everything:
    1. Wiped the system
    2. Switched memory
    3. Tried virtual clusters.. still slow even at 750% cpu utilization.
    4. Tried with updates and without updates.
    5. Tried with multiple other clips.
    6. Looked at my file permissions for each clip
    7. Made sure that each file is self contained.
    8. Tried custom presets.
    9. Googled to see if other people are having the same problem... found this: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/155/866630
    10. Compared times to DVD Studio Pro's encoder... DVD Studio Pro is way faster.
    11. I've written to Ken Stone and Mike from HDforindies.com... just to confirm the problem... waiting for their response.
    12. I've also written a suggestion/problem report to Compressor developers.

I've had the same chooppy/ipxelated results that you are having with DVD Studio Pro's encoder at different settings. If DVD Studio Pro had worked well... I would have dropped this issue somewhat. I'm so irritated that a Mac Pro 8 core... top of the line machine is getting floored by G5's and Quad Mac Pro's. Even though it's just with the DVD 90-150 minute presets... its still a major issue because i need to make DVD's on a regular basis. I woud feel so much better if I knew someone was looking at the problem. Including you I've found 3 others with the same issue. I'm hoping to get them on this thread.

  • Making DVDs from DVCPRO HD footage

I DVCPro HD media (Panasonic HVX200 camera) in FCP timelines. I need to quickly create DVD's for translation of foreign language interviews - so quality can be so so. At this point, I've been advised to use Compressor, selecting Best Quality 16:9 90 min., and then to use DVD Studio Pro to make DVD's. Is there a faster way - or could it be done with iDVD? Thanks!

There are two conversions happening in this workflow, the framesize frm HD to NTSC, and the mpeg compression for DVD.
If you send the sequence directly to Compressor from FCP, it will re-process all of the original frames, and ignore any pre-rendered material. So if you nest the HD sequence into a SD sequence, don't nother rendering.
Now I have had good results going directly to SD mpeg directly from my HD sequence. However, encode times have been roughly 2 or 3:1 on my 2.66 Intel Mac Pro. That's using 2-pass VBR encoding (best).
Nesting the sequence might increase the amount of time required to encode with Compressor. You might find it beneficial to export a SD Quicktime Movie of your sequence to the finder from your HD sequence. The total amount of time required should be about the same, but you can then drop the SD QT file into Compressor without tying up FCP during encoding.
    Hope this helps -

  • Can't get a decent SD DVD from DVCPRO HD material

We made the jump to HD and started shooting in DVCPRO HD (1080i60). We still deliver all of our final shows on standard DVD. I've been trying all week to come up with a workflow that will make a decent DVD from DVCPRO HD timelines, but I just can't get a decent image. First i tried just using the 2 pass best 90 minutes setting, and the dvd looked awful. Lots of heavy artifacting everywhere. Surfed the forums a bit, and someone recommended that I first convert the DVCPRO HD movie to SD 8 bit, then make the mpegs from the 8 bit movie. That helped a little, but still had artifacting in shoulders, hair, etc... So then I turned frame controls on and used the best setting for the resize filter when going from HD to SD 8 bit. This made further progress, but is still a lot worse than other SD dvd's I make with DVCPRO 50 footage or even mini dv footage. Anyone have a workflow out there that will give me a decent looking DVD? I can't seem to crack the HD to SD code.
    I'm using Compressor 3 on a G5 quad.

I still haven't found a way to make this work in compressor, but I have found a workaround for those of you with a Downconverting capture card and a tape deck. I use the component out of my aja card which automatically does a hardware downconvert of my 1080i material to SD anamorphic. I print to tape using my DVCPRO 50 deck, digitize the tape as DVCRPO 50 anamorphic once the tape has finished recording, then use SD DVD presets in compressor as normal. MUCH MUCH better looking DVD's. It's a pain, but the hardware downconversion in the KONA card seems to be light years ahead of anything compressor can produce using software.

  • DVCPRO HD to DVD

Posted this yesterday...hoping for a few more responses.
How do you achieve the highest possible quality output for a DVCPRO HD 720p24 project going to DVD?
Right now, I am using compressor>DVD Best Quality 90 min>Mpeg2 automatic settings. I didn't customize anything. And then I burn it in Toast also with the Automatic settings.
    Is this the best option?

  • Workflow Questions HDV to DVCPro HD to SD DVD?

As the subject says, I have several plays I shot in with 720p and 1080i for the second camera. So I was thinking of converting the HDV to DVCPro HD in their respective size formats to get the i-frame benefits for transitions, color correction, etc. Then ultimately the final delivery will be SD DVD disk. So my question is, to go from HDV to DVCPro HD, compressor has some presets to convert HDV to DVCPro HD and it then makes it non square so the footage viewed in QT looks scrunched but is fine in Final Cut as it compensates. So the deal is since the final delivery is SD DVD is it fine to let compressor move it to non-square or should I try to keep the conversion square? Will it make a difference? I just did a test taking the 720p HDV to 720p DVCPro HD, non-square, then dragged that clip to compressor and output as 16:9 SD mpeg2 and it looks great...just lower resolution. So any input is appreciated on my suggested workflow? Thanks!

The way it looks in your sequence is the way it will come out in the SD DVD... so if it's OK there, it's good to go all the way to a SD MPEG file and burn to a DVD.

  • DVCPRO HD to SD DVD issues
