7970 lightning BE Flickering and fan problem

Hallo
I got 2 problems with my card.
I have reinstalled drivers multiple times and didn't help, i have also tried the new beta drivers.
1.
My screen flickers sometimes when playing games watching youtube videos and livestreams, but when I'm just on my desktop background then i have no problem with it,
I'm using the HDMI to dvi converter that followed with the card.
2.
I have a problem with the fans staying at one speed even if it's 30% or 100% speed (see image bellow)
My card is just 4 days old and got the problems from the first time i plugged the card in my computer...
My PC:
Motherboard: Asus SABERTOOTH Z77
CPU: Intel i7-3770k
RAM: 16GB ddr3 1600MHz
PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1200W
GPU: MSI R7970 Lightning BE
OS: Windows 7 Home pre 64 bit (Up to date)
Screen: Samsung SyncMaster S27B350 1920x1080

Is the monitor at it's native resolution?

If you disable auto control and set a % Fan Speed manuall ydoes that change RPM.

  • X61 Speedstep and Fan problems

I have just got my X61 for a few days, some problems immediately concern me.
The first thing I noticed after running it for a few hours was that, the fan never stopped spinning! My machine comes with a Core 2 Duo T7500 2.20Ghz CPU. I have already set "Optimize fan control" to "Balance all parameters" and the fan never stops, even when the machine is in idle with the lowest CPU speed.
I did a search on forum.thinkpads.com and I found that many people have the same problem with their X61 and X61s too. The general solution is to turn to a program called tpfancontrol written by one of the forum members there. The program allows us to override BIOS fan control and set thredshold for when the fan kicks in. It works, but the problem is that even at the lowest fan setting allowed by the program, namely "1" ("0" is off), the fan is spinning at 3207 rpm and that is quite noisy.
I am a graduate student and I spend most of my time in my office (shared with other people) and in the library. The level of fan noise this machine generates will certainly disturb me and my colleages.
The second problem is about speedstep. Since I want to prevent the fan from spinning all the time, the first thing I did was to try to reduce the heat output when I am just serfing around and checking email. I installed the latest version of CPU-Z to monitor my CPU clock. I noticed that setting the CPU speed to "low" and "lowest" have no difference. Both setting clock my CPU speed to around 1596.5 MHz, with a multiplier of 8.0 and Bus speed 199.6 MHz. However, if I set CPU speed to "adaptive", my CPU can be clocked as low as 1197.5MHz, with a multiplier of 6.0 and Bus speed 199.6 MHz when it is in idle. Why can't I lower the multiplier to 6.0 and achieve a clock speed of 1197.5 MHz when I set the speed mode to "low" or "lowest" (and why are the two modes the same?)
I have already downloaded the latest drivers and all the thinkvantage updates. My questions and suggestions are:
    (1) What is happening in speedstep? Why "low" and "lowest" are the same? And why "adaptive" can achieve a clock speed and multiplier lower than "lowest"?
    (2) Fan problem, as noted above. It is a pity that we have to turn to a 3rd party program to solve the fan noise problem. Lenovo should add more flexible fan control functions to Power Manager.
    (3) How can I set my fan to run at a speed between off and 3207 rpm? I am using tpfancontrol to set my fan level to "1" when the CPU temperature reaches 55C, and off below that. What happens is that: 0 rpm -> heat builds up -> 55C, 3207 rpm -> after 10 seconds, cooled down -> 0 rpm -> heat builds up -> 55C, 3207 rpm ...and so on. The 3207 rpm is certainly no a pleasant sound in a quiet room.

If you have read my post on TPF you should know that I have already tried NHC and no it doesn't work. It can't even recognize the correct clock speed due to the fact that it cannot recognize the change in Bus Speed.
No there is no any Intel utility to control the speedstep. Power manager is a Lenovo Thinkvantage program and as I reported above, the "low" and "lowest" seem to be exactly the same, neither of them can reduce the multiplier to 6.
The reason why I am posting here, after getting no reply at TPF, is that apparently I have tried all the popular 3rd party softwares and none of them can solve my problems. It seems to me that the speedstep and fan problems require a BIOS update or an update to the power manager (or even a fan upgrade?), which I believe is something beyong the reach of a normal thinkpad user. Since this is the official forum of Lenovo, I am hoping that someone from Lenovo can answer my question and provide official solution, rather than asking me to try yet another 3rd party software that doesn't solve my problem.
At least I would expect a person from Lenovo can explain to me why the "low" setting seems exactly the same as the "lowest" setting, if it is not bugged.

  • What programs would be best to run to test the flickering and temp problem?

My new i7 has not shown any effects yet, but then, I have not put it through any stress tests. I do not want to particularly download too much new stuff. I am trying to work with the new mac as it comes from the factory for about 1 or 2 weeks before I start downloading or transferring files and data.
Are there any programs that are factory installed already, that I can use to really test the iMac both from the standpoint of flickering and temperature?
    Thanks

    Herschel Hochman wrote:
How can I stress the new machine to see if it will initiate flickering at the same time checking the temperature characteristics?
I had loaded and running about 25 programs, many of which were doing graphics or video. Certainly this was not a controlled and precise benchmark; I just wanted to make it as busy as I could for a while. No problem detected under the maximum I could manually stress the machine. Certainly things got hot and the fans were running faster but nothing serious.
Just monitor the temperature with iStat as the programs are running and run Activity Monitor to watch the workload/memory use. After that test, I was impressed with the ability of this thing to multi-task and the HDD / CPU / GPU / screen were flawless.

  • MSI 7970 Lightning GHz Edition, black screen problem

    Hi all,
I am very dissapointed on the MSI product now. I bought MSI 7970 Lightning BE GHz Edition, when I don't overclock the graphics card and play games I will get black screen or sometime I will get message that "AMD graphics card stopped responding". So I bought a 950W PSU but still problem is there. If I underclocked the card at 600MHz both GPU and memory clock I don't get the problem. But what's the point of having this card paid $500 for nothing. I am so fed up with this card. Please someone help....
    My System Spc :
    Asus P8Z77-V LX motherboard
    16GB RAM
    Core i7 3770
PC Power and cooling MKII 950W PSU
    Thanks.

watch the attitude! you have got a faulty card it happens occasionally as all manufacturers have a 1-3% defective rate not just MSI so do not start with your bashing as its against the rules here!
there are hundreds of individual parts on a board and any one can go bad causing a problem so if you are going to bash anyone bash AMD's GPU's as that is the most likely problem here on the card and MSI do not make those so keep your "I learned a lesson about MSI... it's a piece of junk" to yourself  !

  • 7970 Lightning BE Flickering problem

    Hi Guys,
I am one of the many - i think - who has this annoying flickering issue while surfing for example. There are a few threads out there about this issue and it seems that the problem has to do with the 2D clocks and their change. There are some possible fixes but nothing permanent.
Is there anyone who knows something more about this issue or does someone knows if msi is aware about this? I just bought this expensive card and I'm a bit disappointed with this problem.

Power down! Change switch position and restart. Switch must be left or right and mustn't be anywhere in the middle and not being snapped in either of the two position. Switching with power on or not properly powering in can destroy the bios or the entire card.
Ive done exactly as you said but nothing, no image  I just tried also with the 2 dvi ports (after i paid 20 dollars to buy one dp to dvi adaptor  ) with no better result, no image
With the switch at the initial position every port works fine!

  • Power mac G5 dual, startup and fan problem

    Dear macpeople,
I have a Power mac G5 dual, 1.8 ghz, ramm 4.5GB. I guess from 2004. Only added more Ram three years ago. Never had any serious problem till a week ago. I have read a lot of similar questions and responses on my problem in this forum but till so far i have not been able to solve it.
Since a couple of weeks my mac sometimes did,nt recover from sleep. Starting up gave me some trouble because the fans were racing like **** and i had to restart several times to be able to boot normally. In the beginning just the upper fan next to de CD player ran fast and loud but now all of them get crazy at start up. Very rare times G5 is able to recover this (fans slowing down) and boot up, but this only in the safe mode.
    I have cleaned the mac
    i have resetted PRAM
i have used utility disk, all ok
i have unplugged for 40 min, reset in the machine, safe start up.
    Checked memory
The only way to boot is in the safe mode. The fans start blowing fast but after 4 min. they slow down then the blue screen appears and mac builds up normally. But when i leave it for more than 1 hour in the sleep mode it will not recover, although i hear the normal sound of awaking/ accelerating disc. The screen keeps black and after a few minutes fans start blowing at full speed. Pushing 4 sec. the on/off button pulls it off.
I hope that someone can help me to solve this problem (me not being a tecnician at all) or that someone can give me a kind of diagnostic so that i can check  the costs of profesional reparation. And start saving money for a new machine.
Any one any clue? Help would be very apreciated

  • Pavilion dv7 - heating and fan problems, hinge broken - DO NOT PURCHASE THIS JUNK!!!

This message is targetted towards people looking to purchase an HP Pavilion dv7 series of notebooks. Hopefully they are scanning these boards prior to purchase, something I (very) regretfully did not do.
    My system: Intel i7 Q720 @ 1.60GHz, 8GB, ATI mobility radeon HD5650 1GB, Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.
Almost immediately, there were severe overheating problems. Even under normal use (1- 4% CPU, Word, Excel etc.) it became too hot on the left side to keep on my lap. My kids actually burned their hands on that part. I once used it on a table with a vinyl tablecloth. It actually melted the vinyl!
Running any CPU/GPU intensive software causes a shutdown due to overheating, a real nuiscance with playing games or watching video in HD. Just as a test, I ran one computationally intensive program overnight while I kept the machine in my freezer. Even then, it overheated and shutdown! (I have not overclocked; just running my software on the hardware as purchased).
Even in normal use, the fan runs very high, and is very noisy. It is so noisy that I cannot leave it on in my bedroom.
Finally, because of the positioning of the vent, I am certain that the intense heat weakens the left hinge. I am very careful with how I open lids, always with both hands on the lid. Within two months, the left hinge cracked. I argued extensively with HP, but they insisted that it was my fault, and I was charged for the fix.
I'm wondering whether the designers ever turned on (let alone stress tested) these units prior to selling this piece of !@#$.
Added bonus: within 4 months, the hard drive failed, though I can't pin that on HP. While the drive was getting replaced, I went out and bought an Acer. It had better specs than the HP, was cheaper, lighter, and even with the CPU at close to 100 percent, the heat is hardly noticable, and the fan is barely audible.
I bought HP because most of the scientific instruments in our labs is manufactured by HP, and it is truly high quality , high precision equipement, some of it running for over 25 years problem free. From that, I really trusted the HP name, I trusted that their PC division would have equal quality and standards. !#$% was I wrong! I'm glad they're getting out of the PC business.
The only reason I'm keeping this junk is because I took the extended warranty at the store, and under it, after three major repairs, they will get me a new notebook of equal or greater value. I can't wait for that inevitable third breakdown!

The dv 7 eg 4012  is the biggest disapointment:
the hinge brakes, it has an overheating problem!!!
Be prepared to replace it after 12 months or pay the bill for the repairs, hundreds of dollars.
I purchased the laptop directly from the hp online store about a year and a half ago.
First of all I had to install the latest drivers because hp is not making sure it comes with up to date drivers.
To find out what the problem was I had to contact the costumer service about 6 times.
After about 12 months the laptop startet splitting at the left hinge.  The HP Costumer Service looked at the photos and told me this, Quote:  "We have received the attachment of broken hinges and find it is an user damage hence, the service of the Notebook would be done on chargeable basis."
Before you want to buy a hp laptop, please type into google:  broken hinge hp laptop
And you will see hundreds of posts of disappointed costumers.
Even class action lawsuit have been taken out against them.
For me, this was the last time that I invested about a 1000 Euros( bought it in Europe) in a product which needs to be replaced after a year and a half.
Please stay away from this product,
except you have plenty of time and money to keep this machine alive.

  • Noisy iTunes and fan problem on MacBook Pro Retina Early 2013

Hi guys, FYI bought today my new Retina 15-inch, Early 2013, 2,7 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 and have the issue of sudden changes of the speed of the fans without apparent cause.
iTunes also is unusable, all songs are noisy (like a radio transmission). Played with VLC they are fine.
    Marco

I had almost the same problem, so I tried to turn off "Automatic graphics switching" and everything is working well again. Intel integrated card is just enough if you want 8 hours of battery.

  • I have a new heat and fan problem....

    Greetings!
My 2011 MBP began getting hot about a week ago, the fan keeps running.  For obvious reasons the battery only lasts about 2 hours then.  I have AppleCare, however don't live close to an Apple Store.  Anything I can do? or am I bound to shipping it off?  After looking around in the forum, I thought I would add that I am only looking at webpages and doing simple word documents.
Thank you in advance for any advise

I have a MBP about 8 months old that started doing the same today. I looked at Activity monitor and found Outlook 2011 was using 100 per cent CPU. I stopped the activity and low and behold the fans stopped and calm is restored ? I cannot think why this should have happened ?
So have a look at Activity monitor and see if there is a particular piece of software that might be sticking in a active mode.

  • No Dust Removal Technology working on new 7970 Lightning BE?!

    Hello.
I just got my new baby, the 7970 Lightning Boost Edition and noticed that the dust removal technology is not working.. A friend of mine has the 7970 Lightning and at system startup the dust removal technology seems to be working because for 30 seconds the card runs very fast and loud. My card does not do that, the computer starts and I hear nearly nothing..
is this normal for a BE version or is the dust removal function doa?
    thanks!
    best regards

my BE just runs a 1000rpm, and never increases.

  • Problems with second 7970 Lightning Card?

    Hello
I purchased the MSI 7970 Lightning in May of last year as part of a new build.  The other components of the build that affect the running of the machine are:
    Asus P8Z77 WS Motherboard
    Intel i7 3770K CPU
    16GB Mushkin Ram (991991)
    Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Cooler
    Samsung 830 SSD x2
    Samsung Spinpoint F2 1TB HD
    Corsair AX850 PSU
    Windows 7 Home Premium
USB 3.0 PCIe card with 2 internal and 2 external sockets
    Sony CD Drive
With buying such high end products I thought I would have an easy hassle free build as I have built computers before with only one problem build that resulted from a faulty stick of memory.  I didn't intend to overclock at all initially and intended but wanted the option to if I needed to in the future.
How wrong was I?  The first Lightning card was faulty and would crash before it finished the Kombuster benchmark.  The system also suffered from continual 'AMD Driver has stopped responding and has recovered' stutters and occasional crashes even on the desktop.  I contacted the merchant I purchased it from and arranged a return.  It took a few weeks but I did eventually receive a replacement card through MSI.
Excuse the pun, but Lightning couldn't strike twice I thought, and the next card would work.  However, I still got the 'AMD Driver has stopped responding and has recovered' reports and the occasional crashes.  This card did at least complete the benchmark so I kept it and put it down to driver issues.
In my quest to resolve the issue I have tried the following:
I trawled the internet looking for probable causes and have tweaked the motherboard bios according to what was recommended on Asus forums to no avail.
I have downloaded the latest bios for the motherboard
I have used the most stable settings recommended in bios so as to cause least stress on a non-overclocked CPU
I have set up my SSD's in non-raid as I read Lucid Virtu MVP doesn't like that
I have done a fresh install of Windows 7 each time I downloaded new drivers for the graphics card so that there could be no old files affecting the driver's operation
I have used graphics drivers from the MSI site for the 7970 and also from AMD without success
I have run Memtest which came up with no errors.
I have also tried using just 8GB of the RAM in various configurations on the off-chance it was a faulty stick despite the Memtest result.
I don't have limitless hours to spend trying to rectify problems with my computer.  I tend to work on it when I take a holiday but, again, I can't continually take up all of my holiday time trying to sort this out.  Unfortunately many moons later I have still not got a stable computer that is usable (it is intended for my work primarily so i do need it to be stable.  I can't afford a crash in the middle of doing my work).
I'd like to get this rig working before the build becomes obsolete.  I have built several computers before but would not consider myself an expert so please don't get too technical with the jargon.
I would welcome any suggestions even if it is to arrange another RMA for the 7970.
    Thanks in advance
    Trevellion.

Ok, I did a fresh install.  At first I thought it had been the Lucid MVP software which was causing conflicts because the system appeared stable.  The computer would even recover from sleep mode (the stage where the fans stop) without mishap which had never been able to before.  Unfortunately, shortly afterwards I got the dreaded hang and the message 'AMD driver stopped responding and has recovered'.  It now seems to do this every time I switch the computer on now.  I just don't feel I can use this computer in it's current state for work as it's too unreliable.  Once the problems start they become much more frequent.
When I enter the Action Center, click 'Maintenance' and check under 'Review your computer's reliability and problem history', I can see multiple reports of 'Video Hardware Error'
Clicking on the report gives this message:

  • 7970 Lightning BE Problem

So i may have celebrated a little to early hmm ..
I just received my 7970 Lightning BE .. PC turns on fine, can play video, ran a few bench marks ( sometimes ) .. but with a bench like fur mark, pc just shuts itself off .. I started with one power cable thats splits into two 8pins .. thought maybe there is 2 much for the one port on the psu to handle .. then tried 2 separate cables each coming from their own port .. pc still shuts down with to much stress .. i have also tried both bio's on the gpu .. I am either guessing its a problem with the card, or with the psu, though the psu did work perfectly with a 6870 .. Hoping someone can help ..
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gs291rq9d8ncefx/bios%27s%20BE.rom .. Thats the current bio's if that helps .. maybe it needs an update ?
     I have also uninstalled/reinstalled all software like catalyst/afterburner .
Any insight/thought as to whats causing the PC to shutdown would be delightful .. i checked to see if the motherboard posts an error code unfortunately it doesnt.
This here is the PSU i have http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Huntkey-X7-900-W-Power-Supply-Review/1446
Rest of the specs are in sig ( besides the 6870 havnt changed yet )
    Many thanks

  • 7970 lightning - displayport problem

I am attempting to hook the 7970 Lightning up to three NEC ex231w displays, with two mini DP to DP cables and one DP to DP cable with a mini DP adapter.  When I use just Displayport cables, I get no picture on any of the displays.  I am assuming Windows is booting (though I'm not sure), but I get something like "displayport not detected" on all three displays and then no picture.
However, when I use a DVI cable as one of the connections (along with two DP connections), I am able to get into Windows as usual, including setting up Eyefinity.
Is there something I need to enable in order to be able to use just Displayport connections?
