Airport Express, WPS, 802.11n and 7.5.2 firmware - can this work?!

Can't believe this hasn't happened to anyone else, but I can't find a relevant thread.
I have a Time Capsule and an Airport Express base station. The Time Capsule was configured as a WDS base station, and the Express as a WDS Relay. The Express is less than a year old, ie 802.11n.
Everything worked beautifully until firmware upgrade 7.5.2 which self-installed on the Time Capsule just as you would expect - except the relay stopped working.
I've tried everything I can imagine, but I can't get the two devices to communicate with each other any more (even with the new firmware on the Express). I have read somewhere on the Apple site that WDS "doesn't work" with 802.11n, but this doesn't fully explain how it did work with 802.11n up until the time of the firmware upgrade to put it mildly. And releasing a firmware "upgrade" that stops existing configurations working, without warning, is not really an Apple thing to do.
One thing I haven't tried is to revert to older firmware; do I really have to do that? Or is there something wrong here please, Apple? Or did I just imagine, for those 9 months, that the relay was working sweetly?!
Don't know if this is related, but Airport Utility almost consistently fails to see both devices if they are both switched on, but can only see one or the other. Is it possible that the Express has developed a fault?
Please help; I have an old house and I can't penetrate most of it without my WDS!!

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.

Airport Express Upgrade (802.11n - wireless n)?

Does anyone know if Apple plans to upgrade airport express from 802.11g to 802.11n? If so, when. I am not sure if I want to purchase the current version if I know a wireless "n" version is on the way.

Airport Express in 802.11n mode with an Xbox 360

I have an Airport Express (with software 7.5.2) and am having problems connecting my Xbox 360 in 802.11n mode. I have an Xbox 360 (one year old, not the new 360 S Console) and an Xbox Wireless N Networking Adapter (Model 1398).
I believe my Airport Express is working fine as I've been able to connect my MacBook and iPad 2 when I've run the Airport Express in any combination of modes -- 802.11g 2.4 or 5.0 GHz, 802.11b compatibility, etc.
I've also found that the Xbox will connect when I run the Airport Express in 802.11g mode, but it fails to connect in any n mode. I've tried several combinations including varying the security -- WPA2 or no security at all. Since the same Xbox and Apple hardware can connect when running in 802.11g mode, and I've got Apple devices talking to the AE in 802.11n mode, I'm suspecting the Xbox hardware.
I've looked through a few forum posts here, and most of them seemed to be older and referenced a bug in an older version of the AE software. At least one mentioned that the person had a defective Xbox wireless adapter, which I'm beginning to suspect.
I've even turned on syslog logging on the Airport Express and used my MacBook as the syslog server. Even though I've turned the Syslog level up to 7 (Debug) on the AE, I don't get any messages about Xbox connection attempts -- just successful connections from my iPad and MacBook.
Any advice is appreciated!

Hi. Thanks for the reply. It turns out that the router was not going into n mode because of the security I set on it. I finally figured this out and the AE did connect in n mode after all.
Well at least it's working now but I feel a little bad for posting when it was my fault!!

Airport Express - forcing 802.11n 5Ghz setup

I've just bought a Linksys WRT160NL 802.11n wireless router and and attempting to force the Airport Express to use 802.11n rather than g. When I configure the AE, I join the existing network. There seems to be no way that I can configure it to use n/5Ghz.
Any suggestions?

From your post, it sounds like you might have an older "g" AirPort Express. Might that be the case? If so, it would not be able to join an "n" wireless network.
To confirm, open AirPort Utility and click on Manual Setup for the Express. Then click on the Wireless tab to display the settings page. Hold down the option key while you click on the Radio Mode selection box. If you do not see any "n" options, you have a "g" Airport Express.
Are you trying to "extend" the wireless network created by the Linksys? I'm afraid this won't work even if you do have an "n" Express because it will only "extend" a wireless network created by other compatible Apple base stations.

Cant load the airport express with 802.11n

today i just got my new airport express with draft n. but my router can't load the config anymore after i uploading my setting ( change to N with 5 GB ). i've tried all of methods that the manual included. I think i need to exchange the new one. i just bought it yesterday.

Coyotelou, I believe I can help you. First, assemble your new Airport Extreme the way it shows you in the manual, and then plug it into an electrical outlet near your modem. Also plug the modem's cable into the port on the back of AE (it's the port with the little sunburst symbol.)
Second, in the Apple Menu (the Apple symbol on the left side of your menu bar) open Software Update. You need to be online for this part. If it suggests an update for Airport Utility, get it now.
Third, go to your computer and open Applications > Utilities > Airport Utility. This will be the newest version if you've just downloaded it. Your computer will "pick up" the signal from your new router that you just plugged in, and it will start asking you questions. It will be pretty straigh-forward. Just answer the questions and away you go!

Exchange and Mail.app 3.1 Can this work?

I am desperately trying to not have to run a VM Windows machine and am trying to get my email from my exchange server. Is there a tutorial on how to do this somewhere?
I see the Exchange option when setting up the account but that is where I seem to have problems.

When I look at the Mail setup I see OWA settings? What is that? (Outlook Web Access?)

We also use Intermedia.net and I've yet to get mail.app and Exchange to work together. The KB and support offer very little more than what you see posted here already. The "Mail for Mac OSX" are not even close to being accurate for our dedicated hosting plan (we don't have mail.domain.com type names).
Mail.app doesn't give you much to go on either... I plug in the information and it just never connects or never goes online. If I open up the Activity window I see it try and connect but then just drops the connection. No failed password or other error message.
Anyone else have any experience with Intermedia or success with Exchange?

Airport Express (802.11n) and 360

Has anyone else experienced problems connecting an Xbox 360 to an Airport Express (new 802.11n model) wireless network?
For testing, I have a simple setup: my cable modem plugs directly into the Airport Express, and I have it set to create a B/G network, with no security enabled (temporarily).
A PS3, Wii, two MacBooks and two DSs can all connect to the Airport Express, but the 360 is unable to. While it can find the Express access point's name it cannot get an IP from it, and fails to connect during the attempt.
The 360 (and all other devices) work fine with an 802.11n Airport Extreme and an older Netgear router. Is there something specific I need to do to get the Airport Express to work with it, or is it just completely incompatible?
Both Airports are using the most recent firmware.

I've been having the same issue. I used to have the old Express (b,g) and recently upgraded to n. My xbox seems it and "connects" to it but when I run the xbox live test, it just stops at network connection (I think that is what it reads) and says "not connected". I use my Express as a bridge. I also have Extreme but I wanted to keep Extreme to be 5GHz (n) and Express 2.4GHz (b,g) for iPhone use and old computers. For now, I have Extreme set as 2.4GHZ (n,b,g) but would like to go back to my old settings. This might be a firmware issue. Extreme had the same issue when it came out. Please share your thoughts or work arounds that you may have encountered. Thanks.

802.11n and Airport Express iTunes Base station Help me ?

I'll try to keep this simple :
In my Office I have a 24" iMac Intel and the
802.11n resides also in my Office
About 40ft away is my Den which resides:
My MacBook Pro 17" Intel and a Airport Express iTunes
Base Station
Going Back to the 802.11n I have a 2.0 USB AC Powered
Hub connected to the USB port on the back of the 802.11n
of which  said is OK to do
Connected to the USB on the back of the 802.11n:
is a Epson R200 USB InkJet Printer and also on that
Hub is a Lacie Porche 500gb External USB Hard Drive
Again  says is Ok to do
The problem I'm having is that the Cable Modem is
in my Office and is connected via Ethernet to the 802.11n
and I can get a strong connection to the internet
on my iMac 24" Intel in my Office but the MBP 17"
in my Den is having issues getting onto the Internet
now about a week ago I spent 8hrs on the phone W/Apple
about such issues so we erased all the information in
the Disk Utility and started over with the information
in the 802.11n and the iTunes Base Station Express
this has helped until the recent FirmWare Update that
Apple Released a few days ago,
I've tried to actual bring my MBP 17" into the Office
and it gets a better Internet signal than in the Den,
but this wasn't the way it was before the FirmWare Update
Any Suggestions on what I can do to fix this situation
As all worked well with the Express iTunes in the Den
and the 802.11n in the Office and the Cable Modem has
always been in the Office ?
P.S> One problem I forgot to mention is I keep dropping

AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Airport Express

I wonder...
I do relase reading other posts that connecting my Airport Express as a client, joining my 802.11n (and 54g compatible network) will slow the whole network down.
But I can't do without the airport express, and I don't want to slow down my WAN 100 MBit internet connection either.
Is there a way to split the networks WITHOUT having to switch to the Airport Express-network when I want to play to the Express in iTunes? Has anyone tried some working configs of how to combine these two in a good way?

Saw a recent post just now...I guess the only solution would be to connect the Express by wire to the Extreme!

Does someone can tell me what "speed" will I get with two Airport 802.11N with WDS setup ?
I alreday know that a WDS with an Airport 802.11N and an Airport Express or Extreme won't get better than the slowless one : 802.11g.

You'll get 54mbit between the two airport extremes...
Technically yes but the bandwidth available to any client is really only 27 Mbps since all data must make 2 hops and no other data can be transmitted during either hop. Other data can not be transmitted because both base stations are using the same channel.
So if the client requested 54 Mb, it would take one second to go from AEBS_1 to AEBS_2 and then another second to go from AEBS_2 to client. Therefore the total bandwidth is:
(54 Mb)/(2 sec) = 27 Mbps
Don't know where you got 104 Mbps but if the clients were able to use that speed to connect to AEBS_2, the data would take .519 seconds on the second hop. The overall bandwidth would then be:
(54 Mb)/(1.519 sec) = 35.5 Mbps
Regardless of how you slice it, WDS makes a drastic cut on your available bandwidth.

Airport extreme (802.11n) and airport exress

Hi, I was hoping someone may be able to provide some advice. I am considering upgrading to the AE (802.11n). However, I am fairly certain that I will need to have a second point somewhere in my home to boost the signal. I have an airport express for airtunes purposes and have read that connecting 802.11g to an 802.11n slows down the network, but does anyone have any specifics? Also any idea of distance capabilities for the new AE? I have three floors I need to provide signal to in my home, currently I have it set up with D-link router and a repeater in a dead area.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Adding "g" devices to a "n" network will reduce the performance slightly, but not all the way down to "g."
Also any idea of distance capabilities for the new AE?
The new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) has an advertised range of "up to twice the range of networks created with the earlier 802.11g standard." However "actual performance will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions." In comparison, the earlier 802.11g version had a range of 50' for 802.11g & 150' for 802.11b.

Plenty of suggestions.. only you can find out which one is correct.
What model AE? What firmware?
Since Panasonic TV is not apple it will use SMB windows type networking.. everything but Apple does.
Are the names in the AE all SMB compatible.. ie short.. max about 20 characters.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Is the security set to WPA2 Personal with a pure alphanumeric password of 10-20 characters.. more is fine if you suffer paranoia but isn't needed.
Fix the wireless channels.. so it doesn't flip flop like a dying fish.
There are only 3 channels for 2.4ghz that do not overlap, 11, 6, 1 although someone suggested 8 works well if you have heaps of interference. If you live in flat/apartment building you have heaps of interference.
Lastly is it stable if the distance is 3M direct line of sight?
If not then get a high power wireless AP and use that instead.
