80GB Classic makes explorer.exe and iTunes hang until it's removed

My iPod is no longer recognised by iTunes at all, and in My Computer shows as a 'removable disk'.
When plugged in, explorer and iTunes both become unresponsive until I unplug the iPod.
I've heard a solution to this is to completely wipe the iPod then reformat it. However since iTunes is unresponsive and doesn't detect it, I can't use the reformat option on there.
I have also tried formatting using windows, i.e. format e: FS/fat32 but this tells me that the disk is too big for fat32 (which is weird since fat32 supports something like 2TB right?)
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could reformat the iPod?
Thanks!

I did find that if I saved all of my photos as bitmaps, resized them to 640x480, and got rid of the dashes in the filenames, that they would work.

When I try to download applications such as Internet Explorer, Yugma, and iTunes in Firefox, I just get a window that says "save" or "cancel", but never one that says "run" so I don't think it's actually installing anything. It shows up in a "download" window, then the icon shows up on my desktop. When I click on it to launch it, it says "open with" and I get the same "save/cancel" window. It's a continuous circle. What am I doing wrong??

What application are you choosing to open the files with?
Because of how integrated it is with windows IE should work. If it's not working, something more widespread could be wrong with your computer that would also prevent other browsers from working properly. Of course we'd love you to stick with Firefox, but you should get help with IE, too.

  • 80Gb classic cant be seen by itunes

When ever i connect my 80 gb classic ipod to my computer i get a message that pops up that is titled:
devicemsglistenerwnd: iPod Service.exe – Application error
and in the message box it says:
the instruction at “0x00427259” referenced memory at “0x00000044”. The memory could not be “read”
My ipod is seen in windows explorer but not in itunes. What should i do?

I am having similar problems. After seven months of working perfectly, itunes doesnt want to recognise my ipod. I have been through all the steps on the document suggested and tried various network drive letters for the ipod. I have reinstalled itunes 5 times now. The ipod is clearly there when i go into explorer, the computer recognises it as my ipod but when Iopen itunes, the option to sunc ipod is greyed out and there is no sign of the ipod. have tried resetting the ipod whilst it is connected to the comuter and itunes and when its not. Nothing seems to be working.
Does anyone have any other suggestions before I pull all my hair out. Cheers

  • ITunes will not shutdown I have to Contrl-Alt-Delete and end itunes.exe and itunes help to get it to shut down and stay closed. I did a system restore and went back to 10.5.1 version and updated to 10.5.3 no dice Windows 7 64 bit

Itunes will not stay close ever since I updated to 10.5.3 version. I try to close program and it pops right back up! The only way to close is open tack manager and stop the itunes.exe and the itunes.help then it will stay close. I did a system restore back to the earlier version of itunes but problem presisted. I finally did the task manager again and downloaded the update to 10.5.3 and this seemed to resolve the problem for awhile but now it is back! Is anybody else experiencing this problem? and where you able to correct it? I'm running Windows 7 64 bit have never had a problem with anything till now. I ran scans of my machine no viruses.

    Hi,
i have exactely the same problem.
After the update to v10.5.3 iTunes isn't shutting down anymore. I have this error on various Windows versions (XP SP3, Win7 x86, Win7 x64.
On my private Notebook v10.5.2.11 still works! I won't update iTunes there - not even for a test .

  • 80GB (Classic) Crash to do with iTunes...

I've had my 80GB iPod Classic for 2 days. I connect it to my computer this morning and when I open iTunes it detects it as the wrong iPod (looking on the internet, I think iTunes detected it as the first or second generation iPod). It says I need to download iPod software 1.5, I press okay and then it screws up on me (closes). I open it up again and just close the message, the iPod tries to sync but says some songs cant be played. I then eject the iPod and look at it to see it has just deleted everything on my iPod. I connect it up AGAIN and it detects it as the right iPod, but says it cant read it or something so I have to restore it to factory settings. I press the restore button and then iTunes screws up again and closes. What can I do???

  • Can't access iPod classic 160GB in Windows and iTunes

    Hello,
after connecting my iPod classic 160GB to computer with Windows Vista I can see it in My Computer but can't access it. In iTunes 10 it not appear and every access via My Computer takes many time. After disconecting iPod is restarting by itself...
But iPod itself is working - a little laggy, but working. One thing changes: about 80GB free space disappear and iPod tells me that only 153KB is free...
I suppose disk failure - how can I access it and repair?

Everything that was on your classic should also have been in your library, and that backed up to another drive. If you manually managed the device, and it was the only location holding your media, and it has become corrupted, there really isn't much hope. See Corrupt iPod classic. There may be a slim chance to recover media stored on it via disc mode if is isn't stored elsewhere, but if it won't mount, or has been reformatted, then the moment has probably passed.

  • 80GB Classic with music, photo, and video problems

I have had a number of problems since getting my 80gb iPod classic.
    1. Music: I keep finding songs that play perfectly in iTunes, but then stop a few seconds into the song when I play them back on the iPod. The first time this happened, I had to delete the song from iTunes and then rip it back into iTunes from the CD to get it to work. The other songs I haven’t tried to fix yet, but, so far, they are all from CD’s and not downloaded MP3’s. I also noticed that they were all ripped from the CD using an older version of iTunes.
    2. Photos: Very few of the photos I tried to download to the iPod were transferred. I got a message saying they would not work on iPod, but no reason why. They are just simple .jpg files from my camera (Canon Powershot S3 IS). Most of the photos that did get transferred were corrupt. The pictures were all broken up and colors were switched around. I tried changing them to .bmp files and also changing the size to 640x480, and that helped some of them, but not all. The only pictures that worked flawlessly were not photos, they were cartoons.
    3. Video: I have a number of QuickTime videos that work fine in iTunes until I convert them to iPod files. Most of the converted videos showed a blank white screen in thumbnail form in iTunes. When I play them, iTunes only displays a couple of frames, and the sound stutters. They all transferred to the iPod, but every time I tried to play one, the video would crash and the iPod would reset itself.
I’m thinking about exchanging my iPod for a new one, but I’m afraid that all of the problems are iTunes or Windows Vista related, and I might end up trading a good iPod for a defective one with the same software problems.

I did find that if I saved all of my photos as bitmaps, resized them to 640x480, and got rid of the dashes in the filenames, that they would work.

  • 80GB classic not linking up with iTunes

My classic froze and after trying to re-set, it just keeps "clicking" but doesn't show anything on the screen. I tried to connect it to my pc - it recognizes the iPod and even shows that 30Gb are used but I can't get iTunes to link up with it. Any suggestions out there??

  • New iPod Classic 2.0.2 and iTunes 8.2.1 (6)

Just bought a new iPod Classic 160 GB with the 2.0.2 firmware (or software?).
I'm using iTunes 8.2.1 (6) after reverting back from iTunes 9 because I couldn't sync my mp3 player with iTunes 9 - they were incompatible.
When I attach my new iPod to my G5, I get this message:
+"The iPod cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 9.0 or later. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."+
But I don't want to use iTunes 9 because I won't be able to use my other mp3 player.
    Question:
Is there any possible way to use my new iPod with iTunes 8? Is there a work-around?
    Thanks for your help!

Yeah. I found that out experimenting a bit. Thanks.
How about this: Can I format the new iPod and install an old software version that's compatible with iTunes 8?
I read somewhere that I could format the iPod using Disk Utility, then restore it. The tutorial stated to upgrade iTunes first, but what if I didn't? What if I restored the formatted iPod with iTunes 8?
    Would that work?

  • Iphone + Mobilebackup.exe (And itunes)

Every time i try to update my iphone 3GS to 4.0 or try to synchronize with itunes, i get the crash-error from windows that Mobilebackup.exe has crashed. After the crash i get a message from Itunes that it can't update the iphone because it needs a back-up to do that.
Now i tried to re-install itunes, without any success. I called apple, they told me i had to contact my provider because it's an iphone question, i called my provider, they said i had to contact apple because it's an itunes problem. You get my situation.
Maybe somebody here can help me? Because i really want the 4.0 update, and a normal working iphone + itunes...
(Itunes is installed on Windows Vista)
    Thanks in advance.

Bump, still the same problem. Please help me!

  • 80gb classic...transferring to itune

I am new to the whole ipod thing and I love having one! I have an 80gb ipod and have set up itunes on my computer with windows xp. Recently we had to do a complete reboot on our computer because of a virus...which wiped out my itunes and my library. I do however have all my songs from itunes library on my ipod. How do I get the songs from my ipod back onto itunes? As far as I know if I try to synch my ipod now, it will just wipe out everything on my ipod because there is nothing in my itunes. Please help.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Sync between iphone and itunes hangs

lately when i sync my iphone with itunes - itunes will hang
it will show sync in progress on the phone and the progress bar at the top of itunes will stop about 3/4's of the way thru
any ideas on what may be the cause or how to fix?

    Hi folks,
I work at ESPN and just wanted to chime in. We noticed this bug and have already submitted a fix to Apple. We're working with them to get it out asap.
The way scorecenter works has triggered a bug in iTunes itself that Apple is working on separately. Our workaround fix should be available in a few days, tops.
    Sorry about the trouble.
    Sujal
PS. You can follow @scorecenter on Twitter, and the iTunes App Store page for ScoreCenter has contact information for our support staff and customer care. Definitely ping one of those if you have any other trouble with ScoreCenter or any other ESPN app.
