8i datafile migration to 9i

Hello,
Is it possible to take a cold backup of 8i DB and then attach these datafiles to 9i DB ?
I have a scenario where in I have 8i DB and i cannot do Export Import because of filesize limit on 8i server. So export is not possible.
Any suggestions how do i bring the datafiles from 8i to 9i DB ?
Thanks in Advance
Vaibhav

Hi,
That is not going to work.
If you don't change any file location, you could copy the complete database over, and run the database upgrade and migration assistant on it.
This will bring the database to 9i.
If you need to relocate files, you would need to install 8i on the target server,
'clone' the database (alter database backup controlfile to trace on the source, copy this file over, edit it as required, etc), which will provide you with a 8i database you can upgrade using dbua.

  • Datafile migration

    I have two databases in unix environment on different systems.
    Is it possible to migrate one datafile (say user data file) from one database to another database and can view the objects residing in it?
    I alreday took one datafile from one database and added(alter tablespace add....) to the other database in the second machine. It successfully added, but I cannot view any entries on it. How I can update the dictionary or is it possile to do that?
    Thanks in advance

    I haven't used them myself, you would be better off searching for proper documentation on "transportable tablespaces".

  • Migrate datafiles from Veritas Filesystem (SFRAC) to ASM

    Hello,
    I'm gathering details how to migrate datafiles from Veritas Filesystem(SFRAC) to ASM. Please feed in your suggestions. The show stopper is DB SIZE which is 56 TB and addition of 1 TB each month.
    ENV Details
    OS : Solsris 10
    RDBMS : 9.2.0.8 (to be upgraded to 11.2.0)
    STORAGE : Propsed to use ASM, but need datafiles migration strategy.
    DB SIZE = 56 TB
    Kind Regards,
    Kam

    Hi,
    First of all you need to upgrade the database to 11.2
    After ...
    It is often used the strategy RMAN Online Backup with Image Copies to migrate to ASM
    Check this out... This a litte example
    You can move pieces (i.e Tablespaces, Controlfile, etc..) database as you want.

  • Migrating single instance SAP and Oracle 11.2.0.1 database to Oracle RAC

    We have a single instance SAP Netweaver environment on Oracle 11.2.0.1 database and want to migrate to Oracle 11.2.0.1 RAC and ASM. The documents are for 11.2.0.2 and later but we want a way to:
    1. Migrate single instance SAP and Oracle 11.2.0.1 instance to ASM
    2. Configure the environment as four node Oracle 11.2.0.1 cluster
    Thus far, I have:
    1. Installed clusterware 11.2.0.1
    2. Installed four ASM instances
    My questions:
    1. We want to migrate the single instance database to same server and extend to four node cluster and ASM
    However, current SID for SAP and Oracle must remain the same. The problem I have is that the target database name needs to be same as source on same physical host.
    2. How would I use RMAN to migrate the single instance database to ASM for 11.2.0.1?
    3. How would I use rconfig after this step?

    3- We have installed four node Oracle 11.2.0.1 clusterware on the above nodesAnd what is the shared storage? For RAC, all shared storage devices for the cluster need to be available and usable by all ASM instances in that cluster.
    Issue- we have RAC 11.2 clusterware listener using SCAN and listeners for all four clusterware nodes.
    When we try to run the following RMAN command to migrate the single instance Oracle 11.2.0.1 datafiles it fails:The failure says: "+RMAN-10038: database session for channel ORA_DISK_1 terminated unexpectedly+". And this in itself does not tell you what the actual problem encountered is.
    4- How to register the single instance with all four ASM instances and network services to resolve the above issue?Register what instance? ASM does not need databases or instances to be registered. It is a storage management layer. The cluster (grid infrastructure) layer is the one that deals with the registration (and management) of the various services and resources on that grid (e.g. ASM instances, database instances, SCAN and VIP, Listener services, etc).
    5- Do we need to first run rconfig utility against single Oracle 11.2.0.1 instance to register with clusterware services BEFORE using RMAN to perform the datafile migration to ASM?Never used rconfig. See Support Note +RCONFIG : Frequently Asked Questions [ID 387046.1]+ for details.

    have a content database with RBS enabled on SQL Server 2012 Filestream. Migrated the data from Filestream to SQL with the script

    $rbs.Migrate()

  • How to migrate users/datafile from windwos to HP-UX

    Hi All...
    Currently all users and datafiles on Windows oracle 9i. I want to transfer/migrate
    all users and datafiles (tablespaces) to HP-UX oracle 10G. without imp/exp utility
    It is possible? pl help
    Sudhir.

    Transfer/migrate 45 users with exp/imp utility , it's time consuming.I don't get you. What about a export/import in full mode ?
    Well, what about a migration onto your Windows server, then transport tablespace to your HPUX machine ? But not sure it's time safer.

  • Reuse existing MaxDB datafiles during migration

    Hello all,
    We did test heterogeneous migration of the SAP system with MaxDB 7.7 using SAPInst together with Migration Monitor. Now we are planning to proceed with productive migration.
    Creating of datafiles during test run took 4 hours, so I am interested if there is some how to reuse existing datafiles and logfiles of MaxDB. Because when I configure SAPInst and I define number of log volumes which I need, SAPInst is asking if I want to reuse the logfiles (I respond "OK"). But when I configure number of datafiles which I need, I just receive input error regarding not enough of free space.
    Is there any way how to reuse these MaxDB datafiles and not deleting and recreating it ?
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Best Regards,
    Emil

    > Is there any way how to reuse these MaxDB datafiles and not deleting and recreating it ?
    No, there's no way to reuse data volumes.
    One of the reasons for that is, that the data volumes are chained over pointers in the respective volume headers and have to fit into the chain of data volumes. Also the the data volumes have to fit to what is configured in the database parameters.
    You can however tell MaxDB not to format the data volumes, by setting the parameter FormatDataVolume (FORMAT_DATAVOLUME) to NO.
    This setting however means that the volumes are not completely formatted and only the space is allocated at the file system.
    Anyhow - are you positively sure that you need to perform a heterogeneous system copy?
    Be aware that this is really only necessary when you want to switch the platforms byte-order.
    regards,
    Lars

  • Datafile location migration

    Due to lack of space that may happen in next few months I have to move oradata(datafiles) to different disc subsystem(partition). Is there manual on how to do it properly?
    Thanks to all replies!!
    Edited by: gracic on Nov 10, 2008 3:30 PM

    For UNDO tablespace you can create a new undo tablespace with datafiles on new location and drop the old one but since you have to restart database to change system datafile location, you can do it with system tablespace,
    basic steps are:
    Connect as SYS DBA with CONNECT / AS SYSDBA.
    Shutdown the database instance SHUTDOWN immiediate.
    Rename or/and move the datafiles at OS level.
    Start Oracle database with STARTUP MOUNT.
    ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE ‘<original datafile name>’ TO ‘<new datafile name>’;
    Open Oracle database instance ALTER DATABASE OPEN.

  • Migrating with RMAN from 10g to 11g

    Hi gurus,
    I am following the following procedure to migrate database from 10g to 11g using rman
    Source side:
    RMAN>connect target
    RMAN>backup database;
    RMAN>backup archivelog all;
    RMAN>backup current controlfile;
    SQL> create pfile from spfile;
    Copied datafile, archivelog backup files and pfile and password files to target side. i.e. on 11g server side
    Target side:
    Set proper parameters for 11g
    SQL>startup nomount;
    RMAN>connect target
    RMAN>set dbid=<source database id>
    RMAN>catalog start with '<rman backup file location';
    RMAN>restore controlfile;
    RMAN>run
    set newname for datafile 1 to '<target datafiles location with file name';
    restore database;
    switch datafile all;
    finished
    upto now it's success full when i am trying to recover
    RMAN>recover database;
    it is saying
    rman 00571
    rman 00569
    rman 00571
    rman 03002
    ora - 19698
    can you please suggest the solution for this.
    thanks a lot.

    I'm not sure what you're doing is supported.
    You are taking a 10g database and restore and recover it using 11g software.
    I think you are allowed to do that with 10g software only.

  • Migrate 32-bit 10.2.0 to 64-bit 10.2.0

    Hi,
    Anyone did this before? I have a method which uses exp/imp utility to migrate and is successfully in my test environoment. But in production, the datasize is so large that I need more than 2 days to exp then imp to the 64-bit. Anyway that this can be done incrementally?
    My new 64bit database name is the same as old 32bit database name, so for my previous method, I can up and down one database at a time.
    But understand that database name and the server name can be changes also, will try it if there a incremental way of migrating from 32-bit to 64-bit.

    I'm using windows 2003 for both database server.
    Could not have Doc ID 403522.1. Try google in oracle.
    Will try to understand this http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/win.102/b15688/create.htm#NXQRF152. It mention about copy the configuration files? What are they?
    Logfiles, Controlfiles, init.ora, tnsnames.ora, listener.ora? Is that all? My database installation is the basic, never change much configuration.
    Sorry Not a DBA. Using datapump is it same as exp and imp? It works fine, just that it took too long to complete due to the size. I have around 50GB of datafiles.

  • How to migrate data from oracle 9i database to new machine 11gr2 RAC ASM

    Hi Expert
    I need your expertise to advise me what is the best method to move data from oracle 9i database to new machine running oracle 11r2 RAC database with ASM.
    Currently my production server running on HPUX ORACLE 9I database with normal file system. My new server is running SUN SOLARIS SPACR 64 bit ORACLE 11gr2 RAC with ASM. What is best method to move data over so it will be consistent. Any guide can refer.
    Regard
    William

    Hi William,
    See the note in metalink Migration of Oracle Database Instances Across OS Platforms [ID 733205.1] to saw the Endian Format of your OS. If is the same you can use the RMAN to convert the database to another OS, if not the only option is using export/import (Transportable Tablespaces).
    To upgrade from 9i to 11g, see the note 837570.1 - Complete Checklist for Manual Upgrades to 11gR2.
    To migrate your FS to ASM the only way is using RMAN, so see the note - How to move a datafile from a file system to ASM [ID 390274.1].
    Hope this help you.

  • Migration from 32-bit to 64-bit on Oracle 9.2.0.5

    Hi guys.
    I have two question for migration 32 bit to 64 (x86_64) bits on Oracle 9.2.0.5 for SAP 4.7 Enterprise?
    1.- When i migrated 32 bits to 64 (x86_64) bits is necesary migrated to Oracle 10 ?
    In the note SAP Note 960769 - Windows: Migration from 32-bit to 64-bit (x86_64), say that, pag 4:
    " Oracle:
    =====================================
    On Windows Server 2003 X86_64 (64-bit), you may only use Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2) software for X86_64 (64-bit) as a database. Note 949116 describes the installation (homogenous system copy) of old products that were not originally released on Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2). If you want to make the copy using the backup/restore procedure, for which the source database was not yet upgraded to Oracle 10.2, see Note 932722"
    But, in the pam matrix say that support for 9.2.
    I confused for the information.
    2.- In the case that is not necessary to migrate to oracle 10, i can execute the migration to 64 bits the SAP 4.7 with the procedure Backup/Restore?
    I don´t have the new server, the server for the migration is the same. The procedure you want to follow is:
    1.- Backup Offline all server.
    2.- Delete the server, i install the server on Windows 2003 64 bits.
    3.- Install SAP 4.7 on kernel 64 bits.
    4.- Restore de backup offline (only data): datafiles, archive log, redo log.
    Aprecciated for the help.
    Best regards,
    Desiré

    Hi,
    According to Note:814834
    #Note that there is currently no 64-bit support for the x86_64 platform
    for Oracle 9.2 because Oracle does not provide a 64-bit DB client for this purpose,
    and, in addition, 64-bit operation of the DB server is not supported.
    This means that this DB version can only be used in conjunction with SAP components on
    Windows 32-bit on x86_64 hardware in 32-bit mode.
    For more information, refer to the "Oracle" section in the note.
    Furthermore, it states 32bit SAP instance can connect ot a 32 bit Oracle 9.2 or 10.2 database instance.
    So for your case, its better to upgrade your current database to Oracle 10.2 and then proceed with migration.

  • Crossplatform Migration 8.1.7.4 db on TRU64 to SUN Solaris PW850.

    Hi,
    I'm performing a migration study of a Oracle 8.1.7.4 database ( ODS Warehouse ) across different OS platforms.
    I'm trying to determine which method is the most suitable to migrate/transfer this database from Tru64 over to a Sun Solaris 10 Os.
    Since it is a database used for datawarehousing, I don't have to mention that it's hugh. In total approx. 2,5 Terra database tablespace size and a additional 440 Gigabytes of files on the filesystem ( Datafiles, Sqlldr ctl files, ksh scripts etc ... )
    Since it's a cross platform migration and the database is a version 8i, the methods to perform the migration are limited.
    1. Traditional Export / Import.
    2. Transportable Tablespaces
    3. Datapump.
    Method 1 and 2 can be excluded since the traditional export/import aren't suited to migrate this kind of volumes. Datapump is excluded too since the source database is a 8i database. In order to use datapump I would need to upgrade it to 10g, but in order to have a fallback scenario, the client prefers not to upgrade/touch the original databases.
    This leaves, the method of Transportable tablespaces in combination with RMAN to convert the datafiles from Tru64 to Solaris 10 as sole option.
    Another option is to restore the 8i database on another Tru64 machine, upgrade it on this new machine to 10g and then use Datapump to migrate it, to the Solaris platform. But this would require two instead of one migration. To my point of view overhead.
    Does anybody have a experience with transportable tablespaces in combination with RMAN converts.
    Where can I find any references/indications concerning performance ... because a additional restriction that we have to cope with is, that we only have a window of 15 hours to complete the migration, since it is a 24/7 database for a mobile phone / telecom company.
    I know that this highly depending on the type of machine, RAM, CPU's, network ( Hyperfabric lines ), bandwidth ... etc
    Any reference is welcome ... or if someone can come up with another method or idea ? Maybe transportable tablespace isn't suited at all !
    Thanks in advance
    Alain

    Yes, it would be a good idea first migrate to 10g Rel.2 because 10g Rel.2 has new feature called cross platform database convert using RMAN. This would be an ideal idea.
    If you reply on export and import, it would take days to finish.

  • SAP R/3 4.7 migration using Veritas PDC solution

    Hi,
    I would like to do a heterogeneous system copy.
    My current environment:-
    OS= IBM AIX
    DB=Oracle 9i
    DB size=6TB
    Storage= Veritas Storage foundation suite (Portable Data Container)
    Target system:-
    OS=HPUX
    DB=Oracle 9i
    DB size=6TB
    Storage= Veritas Storage foundation suite (Portable Data Container)
    Instead of using SAP tool (SAPINST,migmon, R3ta) to export/import the SAP system.
    Can I make use of the VERITAS -PDC solution? Whereby I will do a snapshot of the Oracle datafile.
    And then do some veritas pdc conversion to HPUX . And present the datafile to HPUX (target system).
    Is this supported by SAP? What is the impact if SAP say it is not supported method to do migration?
    I saw a document say it is not supported, but it is dated 2005.
    Thanks.
    Best Regards,
    CK chai
    Does anyone

    The first thing you should be aware of:
    If you do heterogeneous migrations you must have a certified migration consultant on-site, otherwise you loose support for problem occurring through the migration and for the target system (see http://service.sap.com/osdbmigration --> FAQ).
    The only "supported official" way is doing an R3load export and import.
    You can use other ways (e. g. also transportable tablespaces with Oracle 10g) but the responsibility of doing that is in the hand of the migration consultant.

    How to solve this problem?
    I want to migrate whole database, it'can be?

    Hi
    I was able to find only two types of error in this.
    1)
    IMP-00015: following statement failed because the object already exists:Use ignore=y along with import because the tablespace for which it failed already exist in the database. So with ignore=y it would ignore the objects which already exist and would go to next step.
    2)
    IMP-00003: ORACLE error 1119 encounteredThis is because full export do include tablespace defination also. Since the tablespaces which it is trying to create does not exist in the system and the source database from where the exp dump was taken was Unix flavour so the file structure between them was different and as a result it was not able to create it.
    Suggestion.: Manually create the tablespace at your desired location. And then run the imp again with ignore=y
