975X Platinum PUE - Crashes and HDD formatting trouble.

I just purchased a new rig:
MSI Platinum Power Up Edition
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4
PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 XT
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
Antec TruePower Trio 650W PSU
Now, I set it all up, plugged everything in and i'm having a lot of troubles.
When i boot from windows XP CD and try to format the HDD, the bar fills to 100% and I constantly get the error message:
Setup was unable to format the disk. The drive may be damaged.
Check it is plugged in and turned on a bla bla bla.
I get this with multiple hard disks, (1xEIDE and 2xSATA), i know they are working, I was able to take one to work and format/scandisk it with no errors.
Also sometimes I will instead get a Blue Screen of Death when setup is attempting to run. No details, just a STOP message.
My only slight concerns setting up the MB were
1) The ATX 12V Power Connector (this supplies power to the CPU), will fit either a 4-pin or 8-pin plug from the power supply, and mine has both. Wasn't sure which one to use (if it matters)
2) The ATX 12V Power Connector (for supplying power to the graphics card), since the graphics card has its own power socket built in does the slot on the motherboard need power too? It currently doesnt i didnt want to risk over powering it and damaging it)
They may not matter, but i could use clarification anyway.
Can anyone advise me as to whats up? Or help me to narrow down?
(I ran Memtest86+ with no errors)
Ive no floppy drive at the moment so i'm having trouble finding diagnosis software for a cd.
Its causing me a great deal of grief.

What BIOS Version are you using?
What memory voltage did you set in BIOS?
Run memtest to check if your modules are operating properly.
BIOS is version 6.00 - default straight out of the box.
Memory Voltage is set to 1.8v
Ive run Memtest86+, left it going overnight it managed 8 cycles with no errors.
(I'm curious if it will ever end by itself or just keep going constantly?)

BIOS:  Presume you are using failsafe Bios settings except for the memory.
PLS set your CL4 settings to the same as I have in my description - at least initially  - even though it may run fine on yours.
I've tried optimized and failsafe defaults and neither will work.
Memory settings were set to default too (1:1.25, Mem@667MHz), I've now changed the settings manually to 1.5 - 800MHz, 5-4-4-12 @ 1.9v

PLEASE state the full specs for the power supply.
Antec Truepower Trio 650W ATX12V - +5V, +3.3v, +12V, +12V, +12V, -12V, +5Vsb
I dont know what else to say about it, the full specs are here: http://www.antec.com/specs/TP3_650_spe.html

1) Does it post ok every time?  Or do you have problems???
Does the post show the HDDs?
Posts fine every time, all hard drives are shown.

2) HDD & IDE CONNECTIONS & BIOS INFO:  (Presume no RAID)
2a) IDE:  Where is the CD plugged in - the blue (Intel)  or the yellow (JMicron) slot?
and where is the IDE HDD plugged in??
The CD is SATA and is plugged into SATA1, BIOS displays it as IDE Third Master. (I have tried an IDE CD-ROM Drive as Primary Master, plugged into the blue socket again)
The IDE HDD is plugged into the BLUE IDE socket, BIOS shows it as Primary Master
I have temporarily unplugged the other two SATA HDD's to avoid accidental damage.
Quote from: k2again on 31-March-07, 14:18:57
2b) Where are the SATA HDDs plugged in?
How about disconnecting all but one of the SATA drives - and plug it in to the SATA 1.
Quote from: k2again on 31-March-07, 14:18:57
2c) What are the settings you have in the BIOS for the integrated peripherals?
For example, is the JMicron Disabled?
Onboard VIA6308 - Enabled
Onboard JMB361 - Disabled
Onboard Intel Lan Boot ROM - Disabled
IDE HDD Block Mode - Disabled (tried Enabled as well)
PCI IDE BusMaster - Disabled
On-Chip Primary PCI IDE - Enabled
IDE Primary Master/Slave PIO - Auto
IDE Primary Master/Slave UDMA - Auto
SATA Mode - IDE
On-Chip Serial ATA - Enhanced Mode
SATA Port Speed Settings - Disabled

Did u have a plastic bit over the CPU 8 pin plug so u could only see 4?
SO; which did u plug in ?
It did have the plastic plug over 4 slots, I removed it and plugged in the 8-pin connection.
Quote from: k2again on 31-March-07, 14:18:57
Make sure u plug in the 4 prong rectangular plug (similar to the CD power connector) to the graphics PS.
I have a connector labelled PCI-E on my PSU which is plugged directly into the GFX card, and the 4-pin CD-ROM Power Connector plugged into the MB just above the GFX Card Socket.

  • 975x platinum PUE + MSI 7950GX2 + BIOS issue

    hi all,
Does anyone have a MSI 975X Platinum PUE and MSI 7950GX2 putting together as a system? (My rig's detail is as my signature)
I have a case here. These 2 only work if I use BIOS 7.0. I have tried BIOS 7.3 and 7.4, both will distort the Windows screen. To be exact, the "transparent" layer of the GUI display is distorted, such as mouse cursor appears as a big square distorted, some icons are missing, video playback is totally ruined with distorted output, etc. Only BIOS 7.0 gets them to work fine. This rules out it's due to power supply, RAM, or the card itself is the culprit.
I have yet to try on BIOS 7.1, 7.2 and other beta. But I can't tell what's wrong with the newer BIOSes, even I kept all the settings the same. I have yet to get to MSI on this...
Does anyone have similar issue with me?

well ...its not babble but I will try to clear it up a bit...
The blue PATA (old style IDE connection) is integrated in ICH7DH, meaning that you should be able to hook up a drive to it and it should be recognized. This is only place that you can connect your old style IDE optical drives...
The other PATA (IDE 2) and SATA 5 are controlled by the jmicron chipset (requires the jmicron driver) are intended for hard drives. The jmicron ports allow you to run a single PATA hard drive, or a single SATA drive, or you can combine a PATA hard drive and a SATA drive in a Raid.
The SATA ports 1-4 are intended for, well.. SATA devices such as hard drives and optical drives. They are controlled by the Intel chipset on your motherboard. You can operate the hard drives individually or in Raid configurations... Some of the drivers for these devices may be integrated into your Operating System, others may have to be installed using the F6 method, and others can be added after your OS is installed...
One other quick thing, both PATA and SATA drives are IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) drives, since both have drive controllers built in. If you have trouble sleeping, you can read a bit more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Technology_Attachment
@Maesus, Sorry to get off topic, just wanted to help neoplasmic understand a bit more...
I tried searching on the web and on the forums like guru3d and found no one with the same problem as you.
The only other person that I could find that has a problem is Zentos on this forum, he can not find a solution either...

  • How do I change CPU FSB Freq on 975X Platinum Pue

    Hi all!
I´m thinking about overclocking my CPU and that will be my first time ever. So I am a complete noob in this matter.
I have already read the sticky "975x Platinum Pue Overclocking Guide" (I do have that board) and will  have it for reference later.
    1. I have one question regarding changing CPU FSB frequency. I´m asked to key in a DEC number. But how  should I do it. The guide says to "Start from 266 fsb increase by 3 fsb". So do I have to put in 269 to begin with, or how else do I change the number.
    2. One other thing I want to ask of before I begin. My memory is Corsair XMS2 2x1GB 800MHz PC2-6400 CL5 in Dual channel. But in Bios it says 667MHz and voltage 1.8. Do I need to adjust memory clock ratio and the voltage before I begin overclocking?
    3. My third question is: if overclocking Core 2 Duo E6400 to about 3.2GHz could I face some stability issue in regard to my PSU of 410W? (that my PSU could influence the system stability in a negative way). My system is very stable I think and the PSU fan is very quiet.
    4. I´m using the the most recent Speedfan and it shows unusually high cpu temps, about 100c which is wrong as I´m using hardware temperature monitor which says about 35c idle and the BIOS says about the same. Which software cpu temp monitor would you recommend?

Speedfan is no good for Core2 Duo + 975xPUE, use CoreTemp
To change your FSB, simply put in a new number. The multiplier is locked on this board still I believe, so to calculate the frequency you'll get, just multiply the FSB by 9 and that should give it to you. So, yes, that means do 269, stress test, then 272, stress test, etc. BUT, the 266 they used in that guide is from an E6600, you don't have that. You want to start from whatever it is as default.
The reason you go up by 3 is because of stability issues as far as voltage is concerned. That is to say, go up by three, stress test (i like to use 2 instances of Folding@Home) and if it crashes, raise the voltage a little.
Make your fsb:memory ratio 1:1 always, and that means it will run a little slower than what it's rated at to begin with but then you can move up from there. As a beginner doing a pretty small overclock, you shouldn't worry about RAM. At 3.2GHz your RAM will be running at 712MHz, which is a little slower, but once you get more experienced that means you'll be able to tighten the timings.
    Good luck and be safe

  • 975X Platinum PUE V2.0 Power shuts off after ~45 sec?

I'm looking for help with a frustrating issue.  This is a new build with the following:
    *MSI 975X Platinum PUE
    *Intel Core2Duo E6600 2.4Ghz 2M 1066FSB Socket 775
*XFX GeForce 7900 GT Video Card in PCIe
    *Old IDE HD with XP
    *New WD Caviar 250GB SATA
    *Kingston 1024MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Memory x 2
The memory is in the DIMM1 & DIMM2 positions and the system will boot to the BIOS.  Without doing anything, the system shuts down after about 30-45 seconds.  Any suggestions would be very helpful.  I have searched the forums and FAQ and the only thing that it may be is the "Power On after Power Off" under the Power Management Page in the CMOS Setup.  I have not been able to try that yet, as the system doesn't stay on long enough.
Thanks for any help in advance!

I've never done that before. I usually still have my original media so that I can reinstall my programs.
It is hairy but I am sure it is possible to manually move over all the required stuff so that it can work
again. Several things to look into:
    a) Can you migrate checkpoints? XP creates checkpoints so that you can later rollback. My question
is, can you use a checkpoint and move it over to a different computer? Probably not but it might be
    worth investigating.
    b) Manuallly do what an installer does.
      - first move over your program files directory to where you want it to reside
      - the nasty part is to somehow copy over the registry that refer to the programs that you just moved.
        Good luck on that one.
      - also inspect the system32 directory for dll's that applications sometimes install. Move those as well.
I do recall, I needed to do something similar to what you are doing and it was a hit or miss depending on
the program. Some programs just complained it wasn't in the registry and asked if I wanted to put it in.
Those solved themselves. Things like Microsoft Word just insisted to do a reinstall.

I want to get some advice from anyone on what other trials I need to
do. My current objective right now is to get the system up and running.
I already gave up on getting my memory to run at DDR800.
Here are some questions I have:
    - is my PSU too weak? I had a stock on that came with the case and
after browsing the forums, it seems like it was weak and I went and
bought the best PSU I could find (in terms of Amp rating) and ended
    up with this Thermaltake.
    - is my mobo's dimm slots bad? I have tried reseating my memory modules
and even made sure I hear a "click" to be sure it's seated properly.
    - Should I RMA my memory or my mobo or both? Not sure what is going on
actually. Should I try to get a replacement?
    - Do I need to plug in anything special to the mobo? Currently I have
the PSU connected to the mobo:
      - 24 pin power
      - 8 pin for the CPU
      - 4 pin (molex?-- the one for peripherals) for the PCIe power
Confused ??? and about to cry  ....Help?

I love my Scythe Ninja Plus cooler but like I mentioned, its huge, so it may not fit in all cases..
Matching case and cooler was a decision that I had made long before I had bought any of my components..
Here is a picture from an old review of the original Scythe Ninja in the same case that I purchased:
    http://www.silentpcreview.com/article251-page5.html
The only difference is I have a large fan that is mounted on the bottom side of the heatsink that draws air across a passively cooled (fanless) video card, pushes the air through the heatsink and straight out the top of the case...
For building a quiet computer you should have a look at the site
    http://www.silentpcreview.com
When you look to buy a cooler, pay attention to the normal air flow in your case and find a cooler that will work with that airflow rather than fight against it...
    As far as temps go...
My core idle temps (remember that I am using speedstep and C1E) are about 38C to 41C
Overclocked and fully loaded my core temps are about 54C
But that is with all my fans, set manually at low speed...
With that said, you need to be a bit clearer about what temps you are speaking of...
There are two cpu temps (well actually 3 since there are two core temps)
There is the temperature of each core and then an actual cpu temp that is a bit cooler than your core temps..
Without seeing all temps its hard to tell what is going on. Knowing the ambient temp, the case temp, cpu temp and core temps would give a better picture of what is going on..
Remember that you were pushing and running your pc all day. That alone will raise your system temp and keep your idle temp higher than normal.. So your idle temp right now is not typical since your whole system is warm from running tests all day.. As far as your temperature under load, with a stock cooler 55C is a bit high considering you aren't overclocking but its not a dangerous temperature..
Comparing all our systems is hard to do, both dimitri and I have, what might be considered top of the line coolers keeping core temps low...
If you look at dimitri's temps they were raised about 10C degrees from idle to load, your system was about the same.. My temps are a bit different but that is because my cpu and case fans don't speed up and increase cooling when the load increases.
If you can let us know your other temps it will be easier to figure out whats up with temps..
    As far as that reboot...
I agree with dimitri, try raising your memory voltage a bit..
    Be safe...

  • 975X Platinum PUE Quad Core?

On MSI's product page for the 975X Platinum PUE it states it supports QuadCore. Is this true? Has bios updates allowed for this to be possible? I truely hope so , that way I have more upgradability with the board.

    NrthnStar5,
the board does support quad core. But you will need newer BIOS to correctly recognize the CPU.

  • 975x platinum pue problem con raid sata and ide 2

Blank I have as soon as acquired 975x the platium pue I have a problem with ide2. Configuration:
2 hdd raptor raid 0 on sata 1 and 2
2 hdd maxtor on sata Slavic 3 and 4
1 plextor premium master on ide 1
1 reader dvd slave on ide 1
1 plextor px 716a master on ide 2 ide
the 2 does not come seen in how much has had to disable from bios the jmicron why I could not more make the boot from the raid.
How I can resolve this problem?

    1. Format a floppy disc in XP and make sure you use the "Create MS-DOS startup disc" - option:
    2. Erase all files on that disc BUT the following:
    COMMAND.COM
    IO.SYS (hidden system file)
    MSDOS.SYS (hidden system file)
    3. Now there should be enough room on the Disc for the Flash Tool and the new BIOS file (copy both onto the disc).
The flash tool is included in every official BIOS download from the MSI Support Page for your mainboard:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=746&kind=1
    4. Ususally it is a good idea to scan your disc for errors before you use it to flash a new BIOS.
    5. Restart computer, boot from disc and enter flash command followed by BIOS file name:
    AWFL865.EXE W7246IMS.716

    Hey John
Before you send the drive back I found this on the SIIG support site. A little too late. I've c&p the answer below. Basically they are not compatible with seagate drives! So it's get a different card or different drive. I would paste the address but you have to email support to get to a page that lists the top problems and guess what;mMy kernel problem is listed! Surprise they don't list the drive compatibility issue in the card description. Hope this helps you and anyone else.

ok ,now i def going nuts here! I remembered a couple of years ago i had some troubles with graphic/audio card so i swaped places on em. That time it worked cos all cards were pci only. Prolly something to do with irq. I removed my Creative card and guess what........now my computer runs with all 4 modules in dual ddr mode. Without the acid-trip looking screen!! YEHAAAA. Only one downside, i dont have any sound
Now what? Do u still think its a matter of graphic card or could it be something with IRQ channels?

  • MSI 975X Platinum PUE RAM Compability

I'm sorry if this has already been posted, but I couldn't seem to find anything.
Right now I'm using a matched pair (2x1 GB) of Kingston Value RAM PC5300, and they pretty good for the price.
But these RAM, (and no, they're not ment for OCing, I know ) don't let me OC one single Mhz above FSB 333, so I would like to buy some faster RAM. But unfortunately I don't have a lot of money to spend.
I've found a matched pair (2x1 GB) of Corsair XMS 2 PC6400 RAM, that are quite cheap.  Are the XMS 2 RAM compatible with my MSI i975X Platinum Power Up Edition mother board, or should I look elsewhere?
    Thanks a lot in advance

All G.Skill 6400 ram seems to work a treat in this board. I changed my Geil for 2GB of G.Skill 6400-pk (4.4.4.12). I can now hit 400fsb and no longer have any restart ( warm boot issues). It was also cheap.
They also do cas 5 sets too which are even cheaper.
Can't recommend this ram enough with this board.

  • 975X Platinum PUE Not Booting !

Yesterday I noticed that my PC was spontaneously re-booting about every 40 minutes.
This is the first time this has ever happened and so using WIN 7 system restore I restored the PC back to a week ago. Unfortunately, this did no solve the problem and so the next time it re-booted I opened the PC and noticed that the 975X chip heatsink was very hot. I turned the PC off and cleaned all the dust from the fans/heatsinks and everywhere within easy access. I then re-booted but now the PC will not even POST. The fans all work and initially the lights on the Corsair RAM modules light-up but after about 10 seconds they go out.
I have noticed that the fan on the ATI HD3870 graphics card keeps jerking momentarily as if it is trying to start but the fan does not go round. I have moved the graphics card to a different PCi-E slot and used a different power supply cable to the GPU from the PSU but still the card/fan will not start.
I'm not sure if the problem is with the PSU or the GPU and would like any advice on what the problem could be.
    Thanks in advance.

Just for reference, the four LED lights on the back of the board that are either Red (error) or Green (OK) are as folows :
Top left : flashes green then goes off approx every couple of seconds
Top right : Off (neither red or green)
Bottom left : Off (neither red or green)
    Bottom right : Green
The fact that two of the lights aren't even lit indicates to me that it is most likely the power supply but perhaps someone could please confirm if I am right (or not) before i invest in a new PSU.
    Thankyou
