A-b roll editing

hi again
does anyone out there know anyway to make a-b roll editing easy. when I was doing linear editing my a-deck and my b-deck was linked electronically. I've been doing the same thing with imovie by seperating one audio track to work off of and deleting the other audio tracks as I put the two separate angles of video together. I'ts time consuming and basically requires simple math but...time is money.
thanks, frank

Frank,
Simply stated, Advanced>Paste Over at Playhead will replace footage in your timeline with the footage you are pasting. The pasted clip replaces an equal duration of clip in the timeline.
You can also use a setting in iMovie>Preferences to tell iMove to automatically extract the audio before it does the past over. Useful for cutting away to some "B-Roll" while preserving your original audio should you wish to use it.

  • How to use the Rolling Edit in Premiere Elements 9?

    Hi there,
I can't seem to find the rolling edit option in Premiere Elements 9. Is it still in the program or is it removed? And while we're at it, are the slip and the slide edit still in there?
    Thanks,
    Ronald

    Hi Steve,
Yes, if I have two clips or images beside each other on the timeline, the rolling edit will allow me to simultaneously move the cut point of the first clip and the start point of the 2nd clip by moving the (single) cursor forward or backwards.
This was in Premiere in the past.

  • Selection tool automatically becomes rolling edit tool when trimming

I did something and I'm not sure what. But my selection tool has changed. Now when I try to alter the length of a clip in a timeline, it automatically switches to the rolling edit tool with the 2 arrows on either side of a line. If I try to just grab the end of a clip it also drags the end of the clip beside it as well. It affects inserts and almost anything I do. I can't figure out how to return my selection tool to normal.
    Please help.

    Hi grolando,
If you inspect your Preferences under "Trim," deselect the following option.
That should do it for you.
    Thanks,

  • Logic Studio crashes when I attempt to transpose in piano roll edit window.

I have just installed Snow Leopard. Now Logic Studop keeps crashing when I try to transpose in the piano roll edit window. Also, the selected items move up and down on the page, really weird! This looks like some kind of "bug" to do with Snow Leopard. Has anyone else had anything similar?
    David

I have no problems in this regard with any version of Logic under Leopard or Snow Leopard.
Post a crash log, and try all the usual troubleshooting procedures (trying it in another user account, disabling third-party software and utilities, removing third-party ram and so forth).
if you still can't get a stable system, you may have something corrupt in your system frameworks, so think about a clean reinstall of your OS and Logic.
Nobody has posted the version of Logic they are seeing with. Consider updating to the current version of Logic (9.1).

  • Roll edit one side of clip

It has been a while since I used FCP and I forgot a short cut that I love to use. I want to roll one side of a clip so that it ads frames to the beginning of the clip. I want to make the change in the Edit window. Is this too vague or does anybody have some suggestions?

To do a roll edit in the Timeline:
1 Select the Roll tool in the Tool palette (or press the R key).
2 Select an edit point between two clips.
If linked selection is on, the edit points of linked items are also selected.
3 Do one of the following:
•Drag the edit point left or right.
As you drag, the Canvas shows a two-up display with the Out point of the outgoing clip on the left and the In point of the incoming clip on the right.
•Type + (plus) or – (minus) followed by the number of frames to add or subtract from the current edit, then press Return.
Doing Roll Edits in the Viewer
Final Cut Pro allows you to perform roll edits in the Viewer by setting In or Out points while the Roll tool is selected.
To do a roll edit in the Viewer:
1 Open a sequence clip in the Viewer.
2 Select the Roll tool in the Tool palette (or press the R key).
3 Do one of the following:
•Drag the In or Out point along the Viewer’s scrubber bar to roll the edit.
•Press I or O to set a new In or Out point.
Look in the Timeline to make sure the roll edit did what you expected.

  • Rolling edits and compound clips...

If I use the Blade tool to make a cut in my main clip, thus dividing it into two parts, I can then use the Trim tool to perform a rolling edit on the edit point I just created with the Blade tool (thereby adjusting the position of the edit point after I create it with the Blade tool).
However, if I use the Blade tool to do the same sort of cut to a connected clip, I cannot use the Trim tool to perform a similar rolling edit to adjust the edit point I just cut into the connected clip.  I presume this is because when I use the blade tool to cut a connected clip in two, I am creating two connected clips with independent points of attachment to the main clip.  Is that true?  Is there any way to perform the rolling edit I want (without having to adust the tail end of the first clip and the head of the second?

Thanks, Tom.  I vaguely remember secondary storylines from the tutorials I did.  I'll have to look at them again.

  • Precision editor's main rolling edit bar not responding

I've been using FCP X for a few days without hiccups.  Earlier today, the precision editor's central rolling edit bar (button w/ 3 vertical hashmarks) just...stopped working.  It's like it's disabled.  Everything else in the precision editor works as it did before.  I've restarted program, computer (2010 macbook pro 15in i5), and no response from the edit bar.  As if some preference has been turned off. Any help with this? I can't imagine it's simply broken.

Do both of the shots have media available beyond the edit points to allow you to roll the edit? Could you post a screenshot of the precision editor and perhaps tell us a bit of what you're doing?

  • White flash, spinning wheel of death, Mountain Lion, MBP retina, simple piano roll edit then crash WHY ?

I have a brand new Macbook pro Retina OSX Mountain Lion pre installed, Logic Pro 9 studio. I'm running in 32 bit mode, Logic is crashing constantly and all I'm doing is copying a note on the piano roll to another beat. That's all it takes to crash. I will add to this post other functions that cause the crash as time goes on trying to work on a song. Anyone else experiencing this behavior ?

Did some research on the forums, I tried running  Logic 9 in 64bit mode and so far that seems to do the trick. I should mention that I was using 1 instance of BFD drums and quite a few waves plugins. I think the BFD was hogging the memory perhaps.

  • After sharing my movie I can only perform rolling edits...

    Hey Guys,
Thanks to anyone that can help me solve this.
I shared my movie and can no longer edit normally with the precision editor.  Every time I adjust one of the edit points the clip I am extending covers a portion of an existing neighboring clip rather than changing the length of my project.  I don't want to loose or cover the neighboring clip's cut.
I am using imovie 10.3 on an airbook.
I am trying to edit my daughter's school project which is due soon, so any timely suggestions are appreciated!
    Thanks.

Burning a movie file onto a DVD disk via the Finder only creates a data disk. What you need to do is create a video DVD disk.
Therefore youi need to use iDVD, import the movie file into an iDVD project and burn the project to a disk which creates a video DVD disk that will play on any settop DVD player.
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Trim tool and the malfunctioning roll edit/precision edit

I'll get this out of the way first: there is no space between any clips. I use snapping and I zoom in if there is any question. This is not the problem, I assure you. Also, I have trashed preferences with Preference Manager a couple of times. I have restarted FCPX and my computer several times. Zapped PRAM and repaired permissions several times.
So...my trim tool is malfunctioning big time. The proper cursor appears within a clip and I am able to slide edit. However, put same cursor over a cut and it turns into the default cursor allowing the moving of only one side or the other of the cut; not both. Click on the cut and only one side of the cut is selected. Double-click on the cut and instead of getting the precision editor, nothing at all happens. Go to the menu and the Show Precision Editor selection is grayed out.
At this point I'm wondering if a reinstall of the app is called for but I'm hoping someone out there has a less daunting suggestion.
    thx
    aan b

Well...ghosts in the machine...I wrote a long explanation as to why I thought it fruitless to post screen shots because all I was talking about was a cursor on a cut that didn't perform like it was supposed to. I didn't know how I would convey something NOT happening.
Anyway, before I hit Add Reply I thought I'd go back to the edit and see if I could find anyting that would represent. So I went to the timeline with my trim tool and suddenly it's working properly AND I am able to select both sides of the cut which I couldn't do before.
I have no explanation. I had done nothing with since I posted my question. Never mind.
But I do see what you're saying about connected clips. I didn't know that one is not allowed to do that with similarly abutted clips. Why on earth is would that be?

  • SAVING EDITED PHOTOS ON CAMERA ROLL TO MAC

How can I save/sync my iphone camera roll edits to computer? Ive been frustratingly searching for an answer to this for years and Apple still refuses to listen to their customers to fix this.. Why on earth did you put these editing features in your camera when you refuse to allow us to save our edits! APPLE, IF YOURE READING THIS, CAN YOU PLEASE PLEASE FIX THIS THANK YOU

Although photos in the camera roll are included with your iPhone's backup, photos in the camera roll should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
Did all other data included with the backup for your 3G transfer to your 3GS the first time you connected your 3GS to iTunes - everything included with the backup but photos in the camera roll?
With your 3G connected to your computer, you can use the Camera and Scanner wizard with Windows to import the photos from your 3G.
Place the photos in a folder and under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences, select the photos that includes the imported photos. The photos will be transferred to your iPhone's Photo Library, not to the Camera Roll.

  • Can PE3 synchronize two video sources for post edit AB roll?

In PE3, is there a way to synchronize two digital video files (AVI) to create a AB roll type post edit.  My two captured video files seem to have different frame speeds or frame durations.  How do I align and frame match 2 video sources?  The situation is a 2 camera shoot.  How to best create an AB roll edit of the 2 videos sources with audio from one video file as the common element?

    Wes,
Armed with Steve's article, you should be able to do what you want.
I've got a question, and maybe a suggestion to address the frame-rate problem early on, to help solve that problem without a lot of fiddeling. What are the two frame-rates? G-Spot will tell you exactly, if you can not find this in Properties. If the source files are DV-AVI, they should be of the exact same frame-rate to begin with, but if one is off a bit, I'd convert the non-DVD spec one to match. First place I'd try this would be to simply Interpret Footage in the Project Panel. If that does not work, then Windows Movie Maker can do this for you, or you can use other conversion tools to get them to match. I use DigitalMedia Converter, but it's not freeware. Getting the two sources into perfect sync in the beginning will go a very long way to achieving success.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[Caveat] I do not have PE3, only PE4, but I think that this will apply to your version.
[Edit] After reading Steve's article, the one thing that I would do (after establishing sync) to assist me in editing multi-camera would be to set the Video Track Display to show all "frames" and the expand the height of each of the two Video Tracks (VT's), so that they occupy most of the vertical real estate in the Timeline. Then, I'd zoom in on the horizontal display of the Timeline, so that I could see fairly clearly, each frame. This basically makes the Timeline like a detailed Sceneline, but keeps you in Timeline Mode. Because you do not have the Multi-camera Mode that PrPro does, you will not be getting anything but your upper Video Track footage in the Program Monitor. You will be viewing the footage ON the Timeline. This WILL necessitate a lot of horizontal scrolling on the Timeline, but is doable. Then, when you wish to be using the footage from VT1, you will cut out (Sissors Tool) the overlaying footage from VT2. I'd personally arrange my main footage (like the main Audio Track in Steve's article) on VT1, and my "cutaway" camera's footage on VT2. As VT2 takes prescedence over VT1, you can leave VT1's footage pretty much alone, and just cut the footage on VT2. I would use Cross-dissolves on the Head and Tail of the the "cut" Clips on VT2. Remember that if you use these, you will want to make sure that the cut has come where you want the scene on VT2 to absolutely start, or end. The Duration of the Cross-dissolves will determine when the scene either becomes 100% visible (Head), or 100% invisible (Tail). Also, remember that Dip-to-Black on VT2 takes the image on VT1 to black, hence my use of Cross-dissolves.
Using this method, also allows one to do a bit of nudging of the Clips (cut from the original) on VT2, to compensate from any loss of sync. Though you could possibly use this to adjust for the differences in framerate, I'd still try to get the footage as exact, as is possible, to start - a lot less work that way. Also, once the "holes" have been cut into the footage on VT2, you can start to use the Program Monitor much more.
As Steve points out, PrPro makes it easier by locking Tracks and a Multi-camera dual monitor, when in Multi-camera Mode.
This was exactly how we did it with film, except that we had to splice in black leader, where the cuts were made, and could not keep our VT1 footage intact, as we can with an NLE and video. Since we were dealing with sprocket holes, we had spiked gears (sprockets)  on a "sync block" and once we'd get the alignment right, would physically flip down a guide, that would "lock" the film to those two rolls of film to the sync block. Even though it sounds tough, when you read it, it's really not, and so very much easier, than it was with film.

  • Disable Edit Point Selection

An old thread turned back up recently and reminded me of this.  I know a lot of keyboard editors requested edit point selection and Adobe has catered to that request.  Unfortunately, a lot of us combo editors (keyboard/mouse) are now stuck with a feature that actually slows down the edit process.  I'd love to return to the way 5.5 worked in this regard - no edit point selection, and only Slide or Ripple edits available with the normal Selection tool (V), with Rolling edits requiring the switch to the Rolling Edit tool (N).  So, here is a Feature Request that can be copied/pasted into the Adobe form.
Please add a new option under Edit>Preferences>General... labeled "Allow Edit Point Selection".  With this option checked, Premiere Pro would function as it does in CS6 and the user would be able to select edit points in the sequence.  With it unchecked, Premiere Pro would function as it did in 5.5 and no such selection would be possible.
Regardless of how that box is checked, please remove the ability to perform Rolling Edits when the standard Selection Tool is being used (V) as it actually interferes when trying to access the normal Slide or Ripple edit functionality.  For Rolling Edits, we have a Rolling Edit tool.  We do not need that functionality doubled up.
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

I canreally  understand why "drag and drop and mouse trim" (plus razor tool) editors might dislike Edit Point Selection functionality.
So...I dont mind if you guys do get your wish as regards making this an OPTION....but I do not want it to dissapear or get broken!
I am fine with Edit Points and have adapted to it by a simple change of how I "edit the cuts and trims".  I really like my new "edit style" but admit I also get caught by it occassionally.
In that regard....I wont support your Feature Request because I am fearful that something else will get broken in the process of fulfilling your wish.... or something else will change that I have to adapt to again.
    Good luck anyway.

  • Logic Pro X.  Right-click not working in the piano-roll editor.  And colour issues.

I usually use the right mouse-button to open the toolbox under the cursor but this doesn't appear to work within the piano-roll edit window in Pro X.  Is this the same for everyone?  The right-click works in all other windows.  Seems pretty odd.
Also is it just me who finds the near-black background very oppressive?  I worked in front of Pro X for several hours yesterday and was left wishing I could change the background colour of the main and edit windows.  Is there any way to do this?
I also really need to be able to access custom colours for the colour palette as the new palette doen't sit at all well with me.  Any ideas anyone?  The manual states that if you double-click on a colour it should open the colour editor but it doesn't.....

It turns out that if you assign the right button to 'Open Tools and Shortcut Menu', it works in the piano roll.  It's obviously a bug which should get ironed out.
The other thing that's driving me nuts though is that when I change tools in the main window, the pointer still appears like an arrow, even though its function has changed.  When I pass it over a region, it usually changes to to the correct icon - but not always!  Aarghhh I'm going back to Pro 9 for now......

  • Inserting a clip at the beginning of a edited string of clips?

I have five clips edited together. I need to put one more clip at the beginning of the string. Is there a way to move an entire string of clips forward all at once so that I can slip the clip in? Hope this makes sense?

What CC and Ann recommended is right on the money for your immediate goal of inserting a clip before clips that are already in the timeline. But there will be other occasions when you want to select multiple track items. There are several ways to do so:
To select all track items before or after a given point, select the Track Select Backward or Track Select Forward tool and click the timeline. Those tools select clips on all tracks; if you want to isolate a single track, hold SHIFT while clicking.
With the Selection tool active [V]: click a blank spot in the timeline and drag across the desired clips. This is called "marquee selection." By the way, if you do this with the Ripple Edit or Rolling Edit tool active, the edit points between clips will be selected rather than the clips themselves.
Also with the Selection tool, shift-click the track items. This is the best method when the clips you want select are intermixed with others that you want to leave unselected.
