A caper of missing eth0, wireless issues, and missing tools

Hello all!
I'm a recent Arch convert from Xubuntu, and I've had some troubles installing it on my Gateway NV79.  The first problem was that of going to black screen.  This issue I remedied by entering "i915.modeset=0" at the end of the kernel line.  This allowed me to boot into the live environment, and it installed correctly, but several things are amiss.  Firstly, in the package group selection menu, I only get "base" and "base-devel," (I'm installing from a core image on CD, by the way) and while this isn't nessicarily an error, the Beginner's Guide and Installation Guide both imply that there would be more selection.  I also cannot find my eth0.  According to the Configuring Network wiki page, I need to issue "hwdetect --show-net," in order to find out which module works with my ethernet card (lspci tells me it's a Broadcom Netlink BCM57780) but am told that I have no hwdetect, either in live or installed environs.  I also cannot get wifi to work, using either of the methods outlined in the wiki page for wpa_supplicant.
Any suggestions?  Any command output or config files I should copy-paste?
ninja edit: OH, and I wasn't sure whether or not I should put this in the Newbie Corner, or Laptops forums.  If I've done wrong, could a mod please move this?  Sorry for the inconvenience.

You did it!  I haven't run ping yet, but here's what ifconfig has to say:

  • Leopard wireless issue and responsibility

I've seen a bunch of posts here saying that the wireless problem many are having with Leopard isn't a 10.5 software issue--it's a hardware/third party issue, and Leopard is merely exposing a fault with routers or whatever.
I just wanted to say that even if that's true, it's Apple's responsibility. I've seen many posts where folks say they can connect with Windows and Tiger, but not with Leopard. If there's a router flaw that only shows up with Leopard, and not with Tiger or Windows, even if it's technically not Leopard's fault, it makes Apple look bad, and could hurt their reputation. If I was an IT person at a place with many Windows and Mac machines, and Leopard breaks the wireless while Tiger and Windows continue to work, I wouldn't get rid of the routers, I'd get rid of Leopard (again, even if technically Leopard isn't at fault).
Also, does anyone know definitively if the fault lies with Leopard or not? If anyone has any hard evidence either way, please provide it. I think there's a lot of speculating going on.

i was pretty mad when i started dropping signals and getting the "self-assigned ip" message from my d-link router after the 10.5.2 update.
but then i went out today and bought an apple airport extreme base station. i can't believe how easy it was to configure. i was up and running in 5 minutes or less.
and now my connection is stable (so far, anyway) and my download speed has jumped by a massive amount. yesterday, i was downloading a .dmg file and my transfer rate was 46 KB/s. i tried the same download just now and it was over 1.2 MB/s. i'm sure that's not the average speed boost, but it was certainly significant.
as for responsibility - well, yes, apples should play well with others. but now that i have an apple router - if i ever have to call applecare, at least they can't blame it on a 3rd party router!

  • Leopard wireless issues and clean install

I've been wrestling with wireless problems since upgrading to Leopard (I've discussed my issues on this forum). I've tried all the suggested fixes I've found, but still have spotty wireless. I'm going to try a clean install next (erasing my hard drive). Any suggestions on how to do this and increase my chances of solving the problem? I'll have to install Tiger first, as I only have a Leopard upgrade disc (not full install).
    Thanks in advance.

There is an Upgrade DVD. It's called the "CPU Drop-In DVD" and was being shipped with new Macs that had already been built when Leopard was released. Several of my clients received their new Mac's with Tiger after Leopard was released. It was a choice of either take back the computers and reformat them and then repackage them. Apple chose to just include the disc.
I suppose the DVD could do a fresh install on a machine it came with, or one that matched certain criteria.
Many users of older machines have tried to use these DVD's to install Leopard to their Mac's that otherwise meet the hardware requirements for Leopard. It didn't work. The installer refuses to install to the older machine.
    http://www.google.com/search?q=Leopard+drop+in+dvdproblem
I have no information about how the installer verify's the suitability of a machine, but using the DVD on another computer would violate the EULA.
Another thought... If you do a fresh install of Leopard you will probably want to reinstall iLife from your Tiger DVD's. iLife is not on the retail DVD, and I don't think it's on the drop-in DVD.
You may want to make a bootable clone of your existing Leopard installation with SuperDuper, just in case there are any problems with the installation or there is no improvement. Then you can just re-clone your backup to your boot drive to save time and effort.

I had to add brcmsmac to my modules array in rc.conf.

  • Issues with Home Hub 3 Wireless. And lousy teleph...

I don't know if this forum is moderated or followed by BT support staff, but I sure hope so.
After coming from Virgn Media for my BB to BT infinity (Awesome speeds btw!) I'm pleased with the connection and, up until today, the support. I now have issues with my Wireless devices on the HH3.
This is the outline of my setup:
I have the Open reach modem connected to the home hub.  I then have the 1Gbps ethernet port from the home hub that is connected to a 1Gbps 5 Port switch that connects my wired network together (Consisting of my Xbox, Networked Printer and my Desktop PC).  Wireless serves 2 Laptops, an Xperia U phone, and a G5 Ipod touch (not all mine, I have a flat mate).
My issue is that when more than one device connects via WiFi, the WiFi network has serious issues: The connections don't drop per se, but websites are not delivered, data transfer is intermittant at best - i.e. the WiFi network simply does not work.  When there is only one device, there is no issue.
Now, being a techie (I don't mean to title drop, but I think it's important that technical support know that I know my stuff) I'm an electrical engineer (The graduate type) and I know my IT - so I have my own idea of what's wrong with this.
Now, as my order was not completed until yesterday, techincal support couldn't/wouldn't help until today.  Yesterday, however, I spent hours trying to solve my issues and got as far semi-solving the problem.  I managed to get everything working nicely together when Wireless N is disabled and only a/b/g is enabled.  Great, but a main selling point is the Wireless N and I want to use this.
So, today I phoned technical support.  I should also note here, and I made this perfectly clear with support, that when the WiFi starts to missbehave, the wired network still works perfectly and I have no issues with internet connectivity with any wired devices.  So, clearly this is not a line fault - it's on this side, aka, the router WiFi side where the problem resides.  Support decided to do a line test anyway - and of course it got the all clear.  He then asked me to reset the router (Yey, again after I had done it plenty of times before, only this time I had customised the SSID and the LAN IP addresses and now they need done again).  He then went on to state that I should receive an e-mail with instructions on what to do next, and if they are still issues to reply to a text message that will be sent.
Duly, an email arrived.  It began with "Sorry you had to call us today about your wireless disconnecting. We’re pleased we could help you get it working again." and continued on with with this theme.  No, my problem is not resolved!  I phoned back, this time advising me to change channels, and check individual devices to see if they're any conflicts - I did this pretty quickly and disabled and re-enabled WiFi on my Laptop, phone, ipod and still to no avail.
I have now been told that I will get a phone call between 3 and 3:30pm to see if the WiFi will settle down. huh!
I don't mean to be such a pain and sound like such a git, but this is not an issue that I believe the technical support (via the call centre anyway) will be able to solve.  This is an issue with the HH3, mine at least, not being able to handle mutiple WiFi devices conntected simualtaneously - all but one on N, the other on G.  Now, I'm of the understanding that this shouldn't be a problem.  I'm sick of telephone support going through their script without listening to the whole issue either or beleiving that I spent a good 2 hours yesterday getting to the bottom of this.  I don't need line tests, I don't need resetting the router, I don't need changing channels - I've did all this!
So it looks as though I'm stuck on HH3 in 'G' for now until we solve this issue.
Further information: I'm using the type A HH3; again wired devices are not impacted in any way from this issue; I have tried multiple different channels; YES! I've reset the router and power cycled it; And this issue happens wether my WiFi devices are 1 meter away from the HH3 or 15 meters away.
Could this be a bad HH3 or frimware issue? Can someone suggest something or highlight something that I've perhaps overlooked or missed?

  • Using HP Officejet 6110 and Officejet 6500 wireless issues

I have been using an HP Offciejet 6110 printer for a long time with an HP laptop running WINXP. I purchased a new HP laptop running WIN7.  The WIN7 laptop will print to the 6110 in color only and doesn't allow the HP Imagimg Director software to work.
I recently purchased a new HP Officejet 6500 wireless printer and set that up to run off the HP laptop with WIN7 using the full software install.  That seems to be working OK.
I then setup theold  XP laptop using only the drivers for the Officejet 6500 so I could still use the Officejet 6110 from that computer and all the scanning and other features of the HP Imageing Director software.   But it appears that the Officejet 6500 drivers have scewed up the Officejet 6110 software drivers on the XP laptop. How do I get this computer back to using the 6110 as normal (which was very useful) but be able to use the 6500 as an optional printer without all the 6500 features?

    Hi dresdenron,
Thanks for clarifying the issue again. I was a bit confused.
How is the Officejet 6500 and Officejet 6110 setup on the Windows XP? (USB, Wireless)
Both models use completely different software. So there shouldn't be any interference even if the full software had been installed for the Officejet 6500. If both printers are connected by a USB cable, then the Officejet 6500 might have taken over the port and therefore causing the scan not to work.
What happens when you try to scan? (error message)
Download and run the Print and Scan Doctor. It will diagnose the issue and might automatically resolve it. Find and fix common printer problems using HP diagnostic tools for Windows?
If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall the Officejet 6110. This way it will be recognized on the new port assigned.
    Uninstalling the Printer Software.
HP Officejet and PSC Full Feature Software and Driver.
What were the results when you ran the Print and Scan Doctor? (did it print or scan, any error messages)
The Officejet 6110 is a Windows Update for Windows 7. There is no HP Imaging Director software available to run on Windows 7. Installing the Printer Software in Windows 7 for a USB Cable Connection.
Please provide in detail the results. If I missed anything, just let me know.

  • I've read others' posts on this issue and still need an answer that works. Safari keeps dropping wireless; no issues on a Dell laptop with XP in same room. Cleared cache, etc. - any other ideas?

I've read others' posts on this issue and still don't have an answer that works!  Safari keeps dropping wireless connection every 5 - 10 minutes (it's gotten progressively worse over the last month). My husband, sitting 10 ft across from me, has no issues on a Dell laptop with XP so doesn't appear to be the router or ISP. Safari v5.0.6 Mac OS 10.5.8. Cleared cache, tried kill commands in Terminal, restarts, etc. Only restarting seems to keep it at bay for a period, but then it will start again. Any other ideas?

You posted a question about a problem connecting a Mac to a wireless router. You have an old Dell laptop that works well with that router.
I pointed you to a brief discussion with another poster who had a problem connecting a Mac to a wireless router. He had an old Dell laptop that worked well with that router. I suggested he upgrade the router firmware. He upgraded it, and the problem was solved. Another poster in that thread did the same thing, and his problem was also solved. Within the last day or two, I made the same suggestion to a third poster in another thread, and his problem was solved too.
Conclusion: Upgrading the router firmware helps sometimes.
If I understand your response, you think that checking for a firmware update isn't even worth a try. Am I missing something?

  • Issue with HP 3600n, NetGear Wireless Router and SUBNETS!!

    Hello All,
I want to say (admit) first off that I am a PC person. The school I work for has recently acquired some new iMacs and I have to say I am very impressed with the design, ease of use and reliability. I can't believe I am saying these things out loud! Here, however, is my dilemma and I am hoping a community with a little more experience than me can help out. I searched through these discussions already and found some useful info, but nothing to really nail it on the head. My situation may be unique, but I am not sure. Here goes:
The school building we occupy is very old. Each classroom has only ONE data drop in it. Each classroom has a few PCs and a few Macs (mostly the newer iMacs). In one classroom in particular, I am unable to print wireless-ly to a networked HP LaserJet 3600n I have setup elsewhere on the network. Here is the network breakdown:
Main network (FIOS modem to SonicPro 2040 Firewall)= 192.168.168.xx. The HP Printer has an IP address on this scope. The classrooms have a NetGear WGR16 setup to act as a switch and wireless access point. The WGR16 also distributes IPs on it's own subnet, 192.168.1.xx. The iMac connects wireless-ly to this NetGear and receives an IP of 192.168.1.xx.
The PCs in the classrooms connect directly to the NetGear Router via an Ethernet cable. The PCs can see the printer, the firewall and get out to the internet with no problems. They can print with no issues. The iMac, however, can get out to the internet but cannot see the HP printer on the other scope. I know how to add a printer in Windows directly via an IP address, but trying that with the Mac doesn't get me anywhere, probably because I am not doing something correctly. I can get the Mac to print to the HP printer's IP directly but it just sends garbled text to the printer and then shoots out 100 blank pages (lol).
The Mac, HOWEVER, can print with no problem wireless-ly to another networked printer I have elsewhere on another scope (it's a Lexmark C532n).
I am thinking the issue has more to do with the HP printer than anything else but my questions are:
    1. What is the best way to have Macs recognize printers that are on different subnets if the built in features of Mac OSX aren't "seeing" the printer?
    2. Are there any specific issues with the NetGear Router or HP Printer that I should know about and address to solve this issue?
    3. We are a school on a limited budget so purchasing any additional hardware is not likely.
I appreciate anyone who has read this entire rambling discussion and certainly appreciate any help in moving things in the right direction. Please let me know if I need to clarify anything I have said here.
    Thanks much!!

I just had the same problem with my MacBook Pro using 10.5.5 After trying a number of things, the following worked. (not sure what specifically ... just did this combination)
    1. Had the Apple store Genius Bar folks install the latest HP drivers.
    2. Restart computer
    3. Restart the HP Color LaserJet 3600
    4. Connected the HP printer and MacBook Pro directly into a switch, so the wireless was not an issue (both machines had IP addresses set and computer's was set to DHCP with manual IP).
    5. Instead of using the System Preference printing and fax tool, I started Text Edit, typed something and said "print".
Print window came up and said "no printer selected"
    6. I clicked on the drop down so it would look for printers.
    7. It found the HP Color LaserJet 3600.
    8. I clicked on the name of the printer and the computer went out and found the driver
    9. I clicked on "Add" and it added the printer.
    10. I tried a couple of test prints in different programs.
    11. I disconnected the hard wired ethernet cables and set the computer to be on the wireless.
    12. I printed a few more test prints in various programs.
I had previously tried selecting the printer and drivers through the System Preferences to no avail, but doing it this way worked.
    Blessings

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off"

  • Have a D-Link DIR-655 Wireless Router and Having WEP or WPA issues? READ TH

I just contacted D-Link with the following Letter and wanted to post this here for anyone that may need it:
"I have to say that I do truly enjoy this product since I got it to work, but I have some things to clear up.
Are your Level 1 techs truly trained in networking equipment? I called 3 times for help with this issue and no one was able to help me nor completely understand my problem... I apologize for the tone, but it is frustrating when a tech repeats a procedure 4 times (I can understand repeating something 2 times if needed) - when I tell him it doesn't work I feel we should move onto another trouble shooting step. So what I would like to do is tell you what I did to fix the issue in case another person runs into this and they call you for support.
I have a an iMac (but this problem will be reproduced on any Mac with an Airport Extreme card) and I can only get on the internet wireleslly because of the location of my computer and the cable modem/router.
The DIR-655 that I picked up from best buy was Hardware Revision A2 and the Firmware was 1.05 (the latest at this current time)...
If I setup this router with the default settings. The wireless connectivity worked fine - although if I were to apply any type of security to the wireless settings (WEP, WPA 1 or 2 Personal) I would not be able to join the network. The Mac OS would keep telling me that there was an error joining the "xxxxxx" network (where xxxxxx was the SSID of my router). Anyways after tinkering for almost 3 hours and running back and forth resetting the router and testing with multiple Macs I was stumped and decided to get a copy of the 1.04 version of the firmware and downgrade the router back down to see if it was an issue with the latest firmware. Guess what - works perfect...
I would love to see a version 1.06 come out soon that addresses this issue and has the bug fixes from 1.05. But I can guarantee you there is something in the 1.05 firmware that will stop Macs from wirelessly connecting to the router when any type of wireless security is in place.
Please advise your techs of this issues and hopefully come up with a fix for this issue.
    Thank you for your time."
I hate when tech support eats half your day with something that could have been fixed in minutes if people are properly trained.

  • I have had wireless issues sense Leapord, any fixes yet? its a shame that my wife has to sit in front of our 27 inch imac on a $300 Windows computer to use the web effectively. I have tried all fixes  and some work while others don't but all temporary

This Lion wireless issue has become more than just an irritation, so much so, my wife has resorted to sitting in front of a 27 inch imac with a 300 dollar Walmart Windows computer to get the bills paid and use the web. And yes, there is not a fix out there I haven't tried over the last year or so, some worked and some didn't, but all were temporary at best. Same issue with my Macair, I wonder if its a hardware issue, like the video card in my 2006 MBP, it went out after the warrenty and then I found out there was a calss action suit going on over it, unfortunately Apple wouldn't cover it and wanted 7oo bucks to fix it, sold that as parts.
While i really like me Macs, I own three, I may have to bow out and stick with LINUX, that has yet to let me down, anyone know if Mountain will fix this issue? or are we all just waiting for defective WiFi cards to fail at our own expense, PS, got three Macs for sale.

Sounds like you're getting kernel panics, which are usually, but not always, caused by hardware problems, with memory being one of the regular culprits.
First thing I would do is to get our your original OS X disks, insert the first one (should say 'AHT version x.x' in small print on the label - if not, find the one that does), and reboot holding the Alt key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted, choose the extended test. If you have either of the TechTool programs, they can do similar testing. Does that identify any hardware issues?
Next, I'd download rember from http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/ . This is a memory testing program that you can set to run overnight. Does it come up with any errors? If so, try resetting your memory card(s) by removing and putting back into the computer. Rerun memory test.
This FAQ will provide other details: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

  • Wireless mouse and Keyboard Issue after closing the lid - external display

Can anyone give any insight. Recent purchase of a new Late 2008 15" MBP. I have connected it to an external 24" Apple monitor on my desk and use a wireless mouse and wireless keyboard on my desk top. I have configured the laptop to wake on bluetooth devices. So here is the problem: The laptop when the lid is up recognizes the bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I close the lid/screen. Laptop powers down... the after several seconds I move the mouse and the laptop comes alive... But after that there are no bluetooth devices attached. When I use the mouse, I get "connection lost" with a white figure of the mighty mouse on the screen. The wireless keyboard is not there and I have to open the lid and manually find the mouse and reconnect. The keyboard seems to work however....
    Apple..... any thoughts..... anyone?????

Hi Stentdoc; I'm thinking, 'connection lost ~= sorta low AA batteries in the Mighty Mouse? (I would put in fresh AA batteries in the mouse and keyboard, to eliminate as an issue that the 'connection lost' is due to low batt voltage; that this is causing the failure to wake.) ... then, in System Preferences > Hardware > Energy Saver, settings for Power Adapter > Sleep, set to "never" for "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for ..." to eliminate that as a conflict when trying to wake with bluetooth from sleep induced by closing the lid ...
Check your current "Sleep" setup (I left my MBP as "3")
    go to Utilities > Terminal
After you launch Terminal, the first step is to determine which sleep mode your Mac is currently using. You can both view and change the sleep mode using the Unix program pmset. To see your current settings, type (or, copy and paste)
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    press 'enter'
You should see something like this:
    $ pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    hibernatemode 3
So your machine is using mode 3 ... thanks to the documentation for the handy Deep Sleep Dashboard widget, which puts your machine immediately into hibernation mode (so you don’t have to yank all the power sources to invoke it):
    * 0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.
    * 1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
    * 3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
also, I enabled this (to change back, input "lidwake 1":
    go to Utilities > Terminal
type in sudo pmset lidwake 0 then "enter"
it will ask for your password. type it in, that's it!
Now, when your computer is sleeping with the lid closed, when you open the lid nothing happens until you press any key ... nice: keeps it off when accidentally opened, like in a backpack?
WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss
or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your
typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information.
To proceed, enter your password, or type Ctrl-C to abort.

  • WRT310N v1 and MacBook Pro wireless issues

    Hi all,
I've been having ongoing wireless issues with my WRT310N v1. I have a macbook pro (early 2009) with mac os 10.5.8. I have cable internet, with a DHCP connection. I have a computer and PS3 hardwired through the router, and they work flawlessly. The wireless, however, has never been what it should be. Internet loads slow, even though the connection speed is pretty good (not as fast as hardwired devices, but close).
    Here are the wireless settings:
    wireless config: manual
network mode: mixed (the Macbook can get wireless-n, by iPhone is only g)
    Radio band: standard 20 mhZ
wide channel: 9 (can't change this with this config, unless i go wide channel at 40 mhZ)
    standard channel: 11
    SSID broadcast: enabled
I've got WPA2 security, with AES encryption. I've set the Beacon interval to 75, and left the Fragmentation and RTS thresholds at default. The firewall is activated, and "filter anonymous internet requests" is disabled.I'm wondering if I'm losing so much speed by broadcasting a mixed signal, instead of just G or just N. I've tried transmitting only in Wireless-N, but there's no noticeable change (and the iPhone can't connect at all).
Any input at all would be really appreciated. I'm hoping I don't have to fork over $30 to linksys just to get tech support. Thanks in advance.

Well its not necessary to power cycle your router everytime whenever you make any changes on your Router. But if you re-configure all the settings on your from scratch, then its better to power cycle your router.

  • Unusual wireless latency and speed issue

I have an odd problem where wireless connections to the home hub 3 will start to exhibit very high and varied latency from 40ms up to 1000ms every 15 to 30 seconds (pinging from laptop to homehub) and slow throughput of about 4Mbit.  The link speed is solid at 144Mbit/sec and the signal is always on maximum.
If I change the wireless channel on the router and the change it back to its original value the connection starts to behave and latency is normally 1-3ms with the odd spike up to 90 or so and realworld throughput jumps up to 60+Mbit/sec.
I suspected packet fragmentation back have confirmed this is not the case and now believe it to be a problem with the home hub as restarting it or changing the wireless channel will fix the issue for a few hours.  Anyone else had this problem and resolved it?  It is a pain because the connection does still work but it makes streaming high quality media impossible and online gaming becomes a pain with constant lag until I poke the router.

I assume you're using windows vista, 7 and it probably affects windows 8 as well.
When you're connected wirelessly, it never stops searching for a wireless connection and briefly disconnects you from the one you are connect to.
You can turn this off with a program called WLAN Optimizer.

  • Wireless WISM and 4402 DMZ controller mobility issue

    Hi all,
I have a really weird wireless mobility issue I need help with. I have a Wism installed in our cat 6 with version 7.0.98.0 of software. I also have a 4402 controller in the DMZ acting as an anchor controller to terminate guest traffic, also running the same version of software. The mobility anchor is setup on 4 SSID's and most of the time I don't have an issue with it.
However every week or so the data path or control path will randomly go down, so no guest traffic. Timers are configured as 10 seconds for the keep alive count and 20 seconds for the keep alive interval. I have found the following syslog information from our NMS. Not sure what these errors are and if its anything to do with this random mobility issue.
    Any thoughts ??

A traceback is a device producing a trace of where it was in the software code when the problem occured.
Most often it's when a function fails/crashes. Although that is not always true.
If you have the syslog to the deepest level of debug, you will see harmless tracebacks (functions that returned no result but that might be expected). On higher level of debugs only "crashing" tracebacks are shown. In this case, the fact that you have mobility issues and tracebacks related to mobility is highly suspicious.
TAC can decrypt the traceback hex and find the exact part of code that created the problem. From there, they can link it to an existing bug (or a new one maybe ?).
    Hope this clarifies !
    Nicolas
