A Common Sense Solution

From a photographers perspective, I think many complaints about Photoshop CC are coming from people who have previously paid for the full version of Photoshop AND upgrades after that.
First, the price for Photoshop is doubling for loyal users who upgrade each time, and increasing even more for casual users. Previous upgrades average out to $11 per month for consistent upgraders ($200 upgrade / 18 month product cycle).  A permanent $10 per month would be fair.  So, Adobe would be giving loyal users a DEAL to join the cloud version. And when factoring in people who upgraded infrequently and now join, Adobe would be making MORE money from them than their previous upgrade model!
The second major issue: no matter how much money you have invested in Photoshop, no payments mean no using the software. How about every $200 in payments would lock upgraders into that current version and the software would not need to phone Adobe and feature updates would not download.  If you want the continued new features, then you can pay more. This would give Adobe more incentive to innovate to keep people subscribing for updates. If you stop payments after $200 and want to come back later to upgrade, you would need to pay for what you missed.
To summarize, $10 per month for upgraders and after every $200 you lock in the current version.
Personally, I bought Photoshop in the mid-90s and have paid a lot of money over the years to upgrade every single time.  I would be comfortable with the plan I outlined above.
For new users, $20 per month and they lock in the current version when they reach $600.  This would be a $100 savings off the boxed version, thus an enticement to join.  After paying $600, they would then be considered an upgrader and their monthly fee would be $10.
I think this is a common sense solution that would be fair to Adobe and the wide variety of photographers who use Photoshop.

a very reasonable set of suggestions.   in the U.K. I am sure this would be acceptable given the prices presently charged!  my 18 month upgrade cycle has increased by 240% here due to this model, rising from £350 to £850

  • No common sense in iOS 7

    I can't say how dispppointed I am with iOS 7.
    The UI is so obviously flawed in design, I just can't believed it went through with any one at Apple having the common sense of stopping this.
    There are ensledd issues :
    - The sliders that now answer to a simple tap (Come on ! the whole point of the slider was that it would NOT answer to a tap thus making difficult to activate by mistake !)
    - The UI colors : if you have a dark color background then SIM unlock has transparent numbers and you get ... black on black. If you have a light one then everything else if white on white and you can't read **** either
    - When you activate the slider the animation is so artificially complex without any purpose (slide, button dilates laterally, then does a rapid reverse motion and comes back the direction initially intended, turns grey, then turns white)
    - The calendar app shows half as much info on the screen as before : in day view (portait) I see just about 4 hours of my day but then I have a huge space wasted to display TWICE the date, TWICE the day in the week, TWICE the month.
    - Sliding from week to week seems to hardly work if one misses only a tiny fraction of the screen width : if I don't slide on over 90% of my screen it just won't slide,
    - in calendar in landscape view : I see only 4 hours over 3 days : it is next to impossible to have a decent overvien of teh week,
    - and the reminders : well it is so sluggish, it just DOESN'T wotk anymore.
    And the list of proffs of a complete lack of common sense go on and on and on ...

    I must have filled 20 bug reports at least is teh last 3-4 days (since I upgraded).
    In my early time with Apple products, I used to find one bug per month.
    Came Apple maps and that became once a day (including with wrong locations)
    Now comes iOS 7 and it is ... once every hour or more.
    I just can't believe it !!

    Is there anyone there? I hope there is someone who can you understand this problem and have the common sense to respond?
    I open gmail. I want to save an email to one of my folders.
    I position my cursor over the appropriate Folder icon or by choice, to the Trash.
    The friendly finger pointing cursor icon changes to an arrow icon.
    The hand icon allows me flawless access to opening and/or moving emails.
    The arrow, however does not open the link.
    On the Google menu bar the cursor hand with finger opens the links to Everett (my name), Search, Images, Maps and Play.
    When I attempt to open the remaining links in the menu bar (YouTube, News, Gmail, Drive, Calendar and More) the arrow icon replaces the hand. The arrow icon does not work. It will not activate these links.  Nor does it open email messages in the Inbox.
    Usually I reset, even reboot Safire and sometimes the problem goes away, then reappears.
    Can you imagine if this condition should it happen to a tech savvy Google Support person? Perhaps one can share and make my problem go away.
    I am considering dropping Google as my mail source. Unfortunate!

    I have uninstalled my Access Connection, but this problem seems to persist. IBM technician have changed the wireless card of my T60, the first few days after it was changed was very fine, no problem at all. About a week later, the problem occured again, and it happened quite frequently after that occurence. Now i really have no idea what is the cause and how to solve it. Will be greatful if there is anyone that can help me.

  • Account locked by Skype WITHOUT using common sense

    I made an account for a friend and bought a voucher for him. After his first call, the account got locked. Here is the discussion I had on Skype`s live chat. It`s quite hilarious how a multi billion company like Skype hires cheap support from the Phillipines. Why would they do that unless they don`t want people using their service.... Please read on as it is quite hilarious. Oh, can someone ( a NATIVE English speaker prefferably) tell me what in God`s name is the "speciality group" and what is his role?

  • Why can't Adobe add the feature of viewing focus points? This is an obvious,  common sense feature that Adobe Engineers must understrand how to do, No?

    Why can't Adobe add the feature of viewing focus points? This is an obvious,  common sense feature that Adobe Engineers must understrand how to do, No?
    I've seen this requested in several past Lightroom versions.
    Is Adobe not addressing this basic feature for a reason?, I mean, even Aperture has this feature, it can't be that hard to add? Can it?
    Maybe Adobe isn't reading the feature request?

    Honestly, I am hardly qualified to even guess - there are tons of bugs reported that would be easy to fix, but aren't, features that would be useful and easy enough to implement, but aren't. Things like focus points which seem like a no brainer but are never implemented - your guess is as good as mine..
    But to be clear: focus points are different for different cameras, and are stored in proprietary metadata. - not impossible to get at, obviously, but requires some programming/maintenance..
    Worth noting: Apple is shutting down their Aperture business. Yeah, they support focus points and all kinds of good stuff, but I guess Aperture isn't a real money-maker for them (lotsa maintenance work, but not a lot of revenue) - relatively small market.
    Adobe has been working on Revel, and Lightroom Mobile.., instead of focus points (and bug fixes, and...) - my guess: that's where the money is, or where they think it is.
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Can I speak with someone that has some common sense? (Overage Charged)

    My name is Nigel, I have been with Verizon Wireless for about 7 yrs. Last last month I seen that our minute usage was high and we were about to go over our monthly plan. I decided that it would be best to increase our plan to a higher allotment of minutes. Since I have been encouraged to take advantage of the online features that Verizon offers, I decided to change our plan using the website. In doing so, the website provided a "Retro" plan which I thought I selected. Apparently, there was a mistake and the wrong option was selected. Now, Verizon has charged me $150.00 in overage charges on top of my normal bill, and no one from Verizon seems to understand that I am not a Verizon Technician. Surely it is evident that my intent was obviously clear and that the error is a simple mistake which occurred. I am not sure if I was at fault or Verizon's systems are to blame for this issue, but at a minimum, Verizon should honor my original request and retro the bill thus reducing/removing the overage charges.
    As soon as I became aware of this issue I called Customer Service. As of now, I have spent over 3hrs on the phone explaining the situation to different supervisors, and I have even requested to speak to their higher-ups. Currently, I have waited for 72 hours without a returned call. I have yet to resolve this issue.
    I am considering changing phone carriers, but now I have a penalty if I leave, what is the fair thing to do? Why won't someone with common business sense call me back? This company is Mickey Mouse!
    Please have Ivan Seidenberg or the current CDO call me on the 8164 number.
    Thank you,
    Nigel

    2Cool4School,
    The fundamental business practice for a telecommunication vender is to recognize and acknowledge system related errors. In this case, Verizon is liabile for systems errors that disadvantages it customers. After speaking with several Verizon employees, including supervisors, the systematic flaw inherent with their web based services and its possible error ratio has not been acknowledged. Furthermore, nothing is absolute and it is possible that this error was not cause due to any fault of my own. Thus, Verizon should understand their accountability in the matter. I guarantee that Ivan Seidenberg is interested in learning about this matter which could turn into a potential turn class-action lawsuit.

  • Why can't Verizon and Asurion use common sense!

    I have had Verizon for years.  I have had insurance for years.  Luckily I never had to use it, until today!  I had a beautiful red Windows 8 HTC 8x. Well I dropped it and the screen smashed, ugh!  Anyway, I was like no problem I have insurance!  Well it is a problem!  Seriously Verizon get a clue on how to do things in a simple manner!  I called Verizon they were very nice (Enterprise, AL store), but told me I had to go through the insurance company.  Ok, all good until I called Asurion!  Not helpful at all!  1st off they don't have my color, ok not happy but I can live with it, then the 1st girl lied to me, she said they could have a black phone overnighted to me and I would get it tomorrow, I said well I am not happy but fine, hang up (she put in her notes that the call was lost, yeah right) anyway I called back.  Spoke with Tabitha and she told me they actually didn't have my phone in stock and that it would be 5 to 7 business days before I could get one!  What!!!!!!!  Really not happy now!  She said well, since we don't have it in stock we can offer you a comparable phone, I said ok, what about the Nokia 928, she said we don't have that in stock either, but we have the Samsung Odyssey, my husband said NO it was junk.  I asked them why I couldn't go to the store and get a new phone?  That seems like the simple thing to do, they had them in stock they even had blue?  That is not how they work!  Seriously, that is the simple solution!  I pay Verizon every month for my insurance, why shouldn't I be able to go get a new phone, I would have my new phone today!  Asurion told me I could go to the store and pay full price for my phone and then they would reimburse me, they said after I filled out the paperwork, mailed my phone back to them, they verified all my information was correct they would mail me a check.  If I had full price I would just go buy the Nokia 928, but the reason I sign up for contracts is that I get a discounted price on the flipping phone!  Why couldn't I just take my  broken phone to Verizon, they have all my information, get a new phone and Asurion pay Verizon for my phone.  I take my car to a shop and file on my insurance and the insurance company pays the company not me, so why can't Asurion do that?

    I feel your pain. I had a technician come out twice, my moden replaced 3 times, and now my monthly cost has gone up but my internet speeds are not much improved.

  • The info you put and the year you put in the info section of a movie you've ripped into your library should appear in the empty space on the left as you scroll down your list. It just makes common sense.

    Seems like Apple would use the empty black space on the left, that appears while scrolling through your shared library, to display the info you enter in the year and comments section.  For example: I should be able to put the synopsis to each of my movies in the comments section and see it on the left as I scroll through my list. Get on that. Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Apple does use tht space for info about the movie, you are obviously entering it into the wrong places.

  • Battery draining/overheating?

    Situations just like today have been happening to me every day for the last two weeks, and I just want to know if other people are having "phone gets really warm" issues or if it's just me.  I ran an experiment of sorts this morning, not using my phone for a single thing, and the results of that experiment are below.
    I took my Pre [Sprint version] off the charger at 10:30AM.
    Got ready and drove to a friend's place in Atlanta.  Arrived just before noon.
    Had lunch and went to friend's house.  Arrived at about 1:30.  At this time, I looked at my phone for notifications and a battery check.  No notifications and battery icon was green and stated 100% still.  I was very pleased.
    Went into friend's house.  I could feel the phone getting warm in my pocket.  About where the microphone hole is, only on the back side.  Pulled out my phone and it was at 94% and falling.  Tried Airplane Mode.  Tried disabling roaming.  Tried disabling data.
    By the time I left at about 2:30-2:45, the battery was at 80% and continuing to fall.
    On my way back through Atlanta, the phone felt its normal temperature and battery was declining, but more slowly.
    Returned home around 4:30PM.  Battery was right around 60-65%.
    Things of note:
    During this time, I received and made no phone calls.
    During this time, I received and sent no text messages or e-mails.
    During this time, I used no applications and had no notifications.
    The screen was on for approximately five minutes total, just while I was checking the battery and applying my emergency settings.
    Don't know what's going on.  It's now 9PM and the phone is at 50% without having been used for a single thing all day.  The overheating issue can kill 20-25% of my battery and I am not always aware of when it happens as I keep the phone in the pouch.  I believe this started happening with the most recent update to 1.4.  I have tried all the common sense solutions such as:  set Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to off, set screen brightness to minimum, update software and roaming and PRL in the phone app.  I've done everything I reasonably can to make the battery last.  I really think it's the heating up--like it's stuck on something or busy or I don't know.
    Has anyone else had this same specific problem, and if so, what have you done about it?  Curious to know how I can get my phone functional again--right now, I'm afraid to use it for anything as it will kill the battery even more.
    Thanks for any help you can give me.

    I've posted about this on several boards and have yet to find an explanation. My experiences sound almost identical to what possiblybored is going through. You don't use the phone and it dies at an insane rate. Mine's been doing it for about four months now. I've been through four Palm Profiles and easily 20 WebOS Doctor "formats" and three different WebOS update patches. Nothing has fixed it.
    With the help of a few people on Precentral.net, I've found that the constant drain is due to the phone constantly waking up and sleeping, even when the screen is off. This is through constant monitoring of the /var/log/messages file while running Terminus. I eventually setup an SSH connection on my phone so I can connect to it using my desktop for easier reading. Here's what I receive while the phone's screen is off:
    Broadcast message from root (Mon Apr 5 18:32:49 2010):
    powerd: System going to sleep now
    Broadcast message from root (Mon Apr 5 18:32:51 2010):
    powerd: System woke up.
    Broadcast message from root (Mon Apr 5 18:32:52 2010):
    powerd: System going to sleep now
    Broadcast message from root (Mon Apr 5 18:32:53 2010):
    powerd: System woke up.
    Broadcast message from root (Mon Apr 5 18:32:54 2010):
    powerd: System going to sleep now
    Broadcast message from root (Mon Apr 5 18:32:55 2010):
    powerd: System woke up.
    If you look at the timestamps, you can see this happens once every couple seconds. ALL DAY LONG. When I view the /var/log/messages file while this is going on, this is what I come up with:
    Broadcast message from root (Mon Apr 5 18:34:41 2010):
    powerd: System woke up.

    Repeating over and over, about once a second. This happens when connected via EVDO or WiFi. It happens when I'm not connected to the phone via SSH (spams my Terminus buffer). The results you're seeing above is from a phone that was Doctored with 1.4.1.1 (sprint) about 20 minutes ago. No profiles were restored (created a new one), no accounts were loaded (Google, Yahoo, Facebook, etc). One thing I noticed when my battery issues started was my data usage shot through the rough (to almost 2 GB a couple months ago). I'm averaging around 1.8 GB per month of data on my phone, and I don't tether. I ran the following command to check for open connections on the phone:
    netstat -a | grep "^tcp.*ESTAB"
    The results:
    tcp 0 0 72-62-209-65.pools.sp:59313 205.140.203.50:xmpp-client ESTABLISHED
    tcp 0 0 72-62-209-65.pools.spcs:222 ip68-226-115-44.ph.ph:52237 ESTABLISHED
    tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:4445 localhost.localdomain:56637 ESTABLISHED
    tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:56637 localhost.localdomain:4445 ESTABLISHED
    All of these make sense, except the 205.140.203.50, which is the only unrecognized remote connection. I was told that xmpp is a generic protocol for exchanging data, but we don't know what type of data. I used an app called JsTop to shut down all running applications on the phone, which should kill all connections not used by the OS itself. That remote connection did not go away.
    I've posted these results here already: http://forums.palm.com/t5/webOS-Software/1-4-is-killing-my-battery/td-p/260368/page/7 but it has yet to receive the attention of a Palm Tech Support person. It's been buried to page two, so hopefully it will have some luck in this thread.
    I've also been in and out of the Sprint store half a dozen times with this issue over the last few months. They're unable to "replicate" it, but I doubt they're going to the lengths I am to find it. What does Palm say about this?

  • E-Mail Conflict - Unable to Send Away from Home

    I purchased a new Q10 (Model #SQN100-1) International Version phone in February 2015.  The software version I am working on is 10.3.2.440 which was downloaded when received from BB.  The e-mail service provider is Cogeco and the wireless service provider is Rogers. Currently I have two distinct e-mail addresses for personal and business.  I used the account set-up tool within the phone to set-up these accounts.  The default set-up profile were for incoming mail being pop.cogeco.ca port 110 with ssl off and outgoing e-mail being smtp.cogeco.ca port 25 with ssl off.  At the onset, receiving and sending e-mails went well whether I was at home or on the road.  Approximately 7 weeks ago I began to experience issues with sending e-mails while on the road however everything went well if I was in my home. In trying to sort out the issue I spent considerable time with both Rogers and Cogeco.  In my attempt to speak with a technical advisor at Blackberry, I ended up speaking to a sales rep and she hung up on me.  In addition, it would appear I am not alone with this issue based on my research through various sites with specific communications to this problem. Cogeco has changed their server identification as follows:  incoming e-mails pop.cogeco.ca port 995 ssl on and outgoing e-mails to smtp.cogeco.ca port 465 ssl on.  First I can only make these setting changes while I am at home and then they do not work at all.  I do receive e-amils on the new setting until two days ago and when I revert back to the old settings, the e-mails started flowing again.  As for sending, I must use the old settings as the new settings results in a red circle with a horizontal white line nest to the e-mail which I assume is not good. To date, I have not found a workable solution and both of my service providers have worked with me with no success.  The only conclusion that I can come up with is there is a conflict with the Q10's settings or protocols and the service providers.  For a time I used Rogers server address to send e-mails but that only worked for a short period of time. I have been a Blackberry user for quite sometime and this isuue is causing significant issues in operating my business.  Does anyone have a solution (especially the manufacturer) and if one does not exists, then it may be necessary to divest myself of Blackberry products and go with the competitors which many users I know have no issues.  Looking forward to a common sense solution from those that have the technical skills to address this issue.

    I have read both of the KB's and implemented the suggested solutions already with no change.  Based on conversations with my ISP, they indicated that no restrictions exists.  Blackberry's original platform was to provide secure and reliable communications via e-mail to the business community and based on personal and many other global users, this competitive advantage has been significantly eroded. I have gone to Rogers to open a ticket or connect me to a Blackberry technician.  Why do I need to involve Rogers?  They are my wireless service provider and they are holding up their end of the bargain.  Why can't I just contact Blackberry directly? This situation is unacceptable and need a solution in short order to mitigate any further damage to my business and its reputation.  If a solution is not readily available than the only solution is to use another smartphone product.

  • HT4221 My ipad photos and video are not in any order.

    I have a series of photos and videos that I am using Sync Photos, and it loads them in completely absurd orders, different each time I've attempted. It does not follow the naming convention nor the dates in the order it has.
    My first sync, the photos were in order, then the video but I wanted both intermixed, following the name of the file and not the .jpg or .mov.
    I am syncing from a windows pc using Windows Vista.
    I tried using the app Photo Manager Pro, and it has the audacity to rename the files too! So the order there is whacked.
    Is there any common sense solution to this, so you know, I can use a modern apple device to view photos and video, in order?

    I have looked a little bit more, and it seems as though the video is lagging behind, not the other way around. Video seems choppy, but the audio is playing perfectly. Music Videos are suffering from the same problem as well. Also, when I sync to my iPod Touch 16GB, audio & video match up perfectly.
    I still have no idea how to fix this. Please help.

  • How to create object per thread

    Hi everyone,
    This is my problem. I want to have a static method. Inside of it I want to add an element into a List, let's say I want to track something by doing this. But I also want this List to have multiple copies depending on threads, which means for every call to this static method, I want to call the "add" method on different List objects depending which thread it is from.
    Does it make sense? Do I need to have a thread pool to keep those thread references or something?
    How about I use Thread.currentThread() to determine whether this call is from a different thread so that I create another List?
    Thank you very much!

    want to be perfect with singleton as why it is needed and how it works so see this by [email protected], Bijnor
    For those who haven't heard of design patterns before, or who are familiar with the term but not its meaning, a design pattern is a template for software development. The purpose of the template is to define a particular behavior or technique that can be used as a building block for the construction of software - to solve universal problems that commonly face developers. Think of design code as a way of passing on some nifty piece of advice, just like your mother used to give. "Never wear your socks for more than one day" might be an old family adage, passed down from generation to generation. It's common sense solutions that are passed on to others. Consider a design pattern as a useful piece of advice for designing software.
    Design patterns out of the way, let's look at the singleton. By now, you're probably wondering what a singleton is - isn't jargon terrible? A singleton is an object that cannot be instantiated. At first, that might seem counterintuitive - after all, we need an instance of an object before we can use it. Well yes a singleton can be created, but it can't be instantiated by developers - meaning that the singleton class has control over how it is created. The restriction on the singleton is that there can be only one instance of a singleton created by the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) - by prevent direct instantiation we can ensure that developers don't create a second copy.
    So why would this be useful? Often in designing a system, we want to control how an object is used, and prevent others (ourselves included) from making copies of it or creating new instances. For example, a central configuration object that stores setup information should have one and one only instance - a global copy accessible from any part of the application, including any threads that are running. Creating a new configuration object and using it would be fairly useless, as other parts of the application might be looking at the old configuration object, and changes to application settings wouldn't always be acted upon. I'm sure you can think of a other situations where a singleton would be useful - perhaps you've even used one before without giving it a name. It's a common enough design criteria (not used everyday, but you'll come across it from time to time). The singleton pattern can be applied in any language, but since we're all Java programmers here (if you're not, shame!) let's look at how to implement the pattern using Java.
    Preventing direct instantiation
    We all know how objects are instantiated right? Maybe not everyone? Let's go through a quick refresher.
    Objects are instantiated by using the new keyword. The new keyword allows you to create a new instance of an object, and to specify parameters to the class's constructor. You can specify no parameters, in which case the blank constructor (also known as the default constructor) is invoked. Constructors can have access modifiers, like public and private, which allow you to control which classes have access to a constructor. So to prevent direct instantiation, we create a private default constructor, so that other classes can't create a new instance.
    We'll start with the class definition, for a SingletonObject class. Next, we provide a default constructor that is marked as private. No actual code needs to be written, but you're free to add some initialization code if you'd like.
    public class SingletonObject
         private SingletonObject()
              // no code req'd
    So far so good. But unless we add some further code, there'll be absolutely no way to use the class. We want to prevent direct instantiation, but we still need to allow a way to get a reference to an instance of the singleton object.
    Getting an instance of the singleton
    We need to provide an accessor method, that returns an instance of the SingletonObject class but doesn't allow more than one copy to be accessed. We can manually instantiate an object, but we need to keep a reference to the singleton so that subsequent calls to the accessor method can return the singleton (rather than creating a new one). To do this, provide a public static method called getSingletonObject(), and store a copy of the singleton in a private member variable.
    public class SingletonObject
    private SingletonObject()
    // no code req'd
    public static SingletonObject getSingletonObject()
    if (ref == null)
    // it's ok, we can call this constructor
    ref = new SingletonObject();
    return ref;
    private static SingletonObject ref;
    So far, so good. When first called, the getSingletonObject() method creates a singleton instance, assigns it to a member variable, and returns the singleton. Subsequent calls will return the same singleton, and all is well with the world. You could extend the functionality of the singleton object by adding new methods, to perform the types of tasks your singleton needs. So the singleton is done, right? Well almost.....
    Preventing thread problems with your singleton
    We need to make sure that threads calling the getSingletonObject() method don't cause problems, so it's advisable to mark the method as synchronized. This prevents two threads from calling the getSingletonObject() method at the same time. If one thread entered the method just after the other, you could end up calling the SingletonObject constructor twice and returning different values. To change the method, just add the synchronized keyword as follows to the method declaration :-
    public static synchronized
         SingletonObject getSingletonObject()
    Are we finished yet?
    There, finished. A singleton object that guarantees one instance of the class, and never more than one. Right? Well.... not quite. Where there's a will, there's a way - it is still possible to evade all our defensive programming and create more than one instance of the singleton class defined above. Here's where most articles on singletons fall down, because they forget about cloning. Examine the following code snippet, which clones a singleton object.
    public class Clone
         public static void main(String args[])
         throws Exception
         // Get a singleton
         SingletonObject obj =
         SingletonObject.getSingletonObject();
         // Buahahaha. Let's clone the object
         SingletonObject clone =
              (SingletonObject) obj.clone();
    Okay, we're cheating a little here. There isn't a clone() method defined in SingletonObject, but there is in the java.lang.Object class which it is inherited from. By default, the clone() method is marked as protected, but if your SingletonObject extends another class that does support cloning, it is possible to violate the design principles of the singleton. So, to be absolutely positively 100% certain that a singleton really is a singleton, we must add a clone() method of our own, and throw a CloneNotSupportedException if anyone dares try!
    Here's the final source code for a SingletonObject, which you can use as a template for your own singletons.
    public class SingletonObject
    private SingletonObject()
    // no code req'd
    public static SingletonObject getSingletonObject()
    if (ref == null)
    // it's ok, we can call this constructor
    ref = new SingletonObject();
    return ref;
    public Object clone()
         throws CloneNotSupportedException
    throw new CloneNotSupportedException();
    // that'll teach 'em
    private static SingletonObject ref;
    Summary
    A singleton is an class that can be instantiated once, and only once. This is a fairly unique property, but useful in a wide range of object designs. Creating an implementation of the singleton pattern is fairly straightforward - simple block off access to all constructors, provide a static method for getting an instance of the singleton, and prevent cloning.
    What is a singleton class?
    A: A class whose number of instances that can be instantiated is limited to one is called a singleton class. Thus, at any given time only one instance can exist, no more.
    Q: Can you give me an example, where it is used?
    A: The singleton design pattern is used whenever the design requires only one instance of a class. Some examples:
         Application classes. There should only be one application class. (Note: Please bear in mind, MFC class 'CWinApp' is not implemented as a singleton class)
         Logger classes. For logging purposes of an application there is usually one logger instance required.
    Q: How could a singleton class be implemented?
    A: There are several ways of creating a singleton class. The most simple approach is shown below:
    Code:
    class CMySingleton
    public:
    static CMySingleton& Instance()
    static CMySingleton singleton;
    return singleton;
    // Other non-static member functions
    private:
    CMySingleton() {}; // Private constructor
    CMySingleton(const CMySingleton&); // Prevent copy-construction
    CMySingleton& operator=(const CMySingleton&); // Prevent assignment
    Can I extend the singleton pattern to allow more than one instance?
    A: The general purpose of the singleton design pattern is to limit the number of instances of a class to only one. However, the pattern can be extended by many ways to actually control the number of instances allowed. One way is shown below...
    class CMyClass
    private:
    CMyClass() {} // Private Constructor
    static int nCount; // Current number of instances
    static int nMaxInstance; // Maximum number of instances
    public:
    ~CMyClass(); // Public Destructor
    static CMyClass* CreateInstance(); // Construct Indirectly
    //Add whatever members you want
    };

  • I can't get ios 4.3.3 to load on my ipod touch gen4 8g

    When prompted i click to update to 4.3.3 and it goes throught the whole download process, and during the "finishing" or "completing" something like that, it stops the update and says the software is corrupted. I have checked to make sure i am using the most current itunes. Is there a way to fix this without wiping the ipod and reloading ios?

    the status bar at the top center says "processing file" and I get a small popup with a red X of certain doom. In the pop up it says the software was corrupted during the download, and then i has some different instructions, like disconnect and reconnect, make sure network is active, or try again later. I have tried a number of common sense solutions like disconnect/reconnect, reboot my pc, make sure I am running current itunes, disconnect every other web related program, and yes even try again later, and alas no success yet. I have tried nearly 20 different times to get this update and it always says corrupted during the "processing file" stage

  • Won't boot OSX, how to open disc tray to put in repair or install disc?

    My iBook G3 600 won't boot to the desktop, it hangs on the startup/spinning wheel. Can someone suggest a variety of good common sense solutions?
    Also, how does one open the disc tray (to put in the original install and/or repair disc) if the tray won't open by pressing F12 during the failed startup?

    Hi Ronda.
    Thanks for the target mode article. An earlier attempt to run the iBook G3/10.4 as a target disc resulted in the MacBook Pro not being able to recognize/see the G3's drive, which seems to confirm my suspicion that there is major corruption or disc failure on the iBook.
    My needs now seem to center around data recovery (if possible) and then attempting to replace the iBook HD.
    As regards data recovery/disc repair, have you used or had success with TechTool Pro 4? I have TechTool Deluxe as part of my MacBook AppleCare program and may decide to upgrade to the Pro version, if merited. The app should work with my G3, which runs OS 10.4 (but not 10.5).
    Also, have you attempted a HD replacement on a G3? iFixit.com offers detailed instructions. While it seems do-able for a layperson like myself, it does involve a near complete disassembly of the case, shield, housing, etc.
    Finally, and apropos of nothing, have you attempted to put 10.5 on your G3? My understanding is that 10.5 exceeds the G3 specs.
