A feature request for iOS app developers...

Guys and Gals,
I have a feature request which I think will benefit iOS app developers  as much as it would benefit your customers.
Any customer that has more than a handful of apps will eventually forget what some of those apps do or what makes them unique. For instance, I had not used the wonderful hotel finder, Oyster, in over a year. I not only forgot I had it, I also forgot how Oyster's service was different than other hotel finders. I had to refamiliarize myself with the app. Sometimes, this requires returning to the App Store to read the product description again.
It would be helpful if every app had an About button that would present the product description, summarizing the app's purpose and what differentiates it from similar apps without going into the details of how to use it.

Apple discourages the use of About or Help buttons.
Send feedback to Apple because this is the wrong place to ask; we are all just users like you.

  • Nokia 808 Pureview feature request for Phone and C...

    Hi,
Where would be the best venue to make feature requests for the 808 functions?  These are some nice-to-have ideas that I would like to propose, which would increase its awesomeness:
    - in video mode, add a "lock exposure" setting so that the 808 doesn't continuously adjust exposure after recording starts. this would be equivalent to setting the exposure to manual on a regular videocam.
    - in photo creative mode, add a voice-activated self-timer, where it would take a shot when sound reaches a certain threshold.  this is similar to what the Shout 'n Snap app does for the android.
    - in phone calls, add an option to use proximity sensing, so that when you take the phone away from your ear, the handset automatically switches to speaker phone, or vice versa.  this would be equivalent to the Phone Speakers Switcher on the N900.
    Thanks

i'd like to make an addendum to my request and change it to "lock exposure and white balance".
i just found that while shooting, it does not keep the white balance setting throughout. for example, select "tungsten" and the video will start with this, but later it adjusts as if it was under "auto" white balance setting for the rest of the video.

  • Which programming language do we use for ios apps?

    Hello,
I would like to know which programing language do professional ios app developers use for apps which work with an integrated database. I thought firstly about C# but recently Ruby has come into my attention as a good app development language.
    Thank you very much.

Since you mentioned Ruby, there is the RubyMotion toolchain, which can be used to develop applications for iOS, OS X, and Android.  It isn't free, but then again you won't have to use Objective-C or Swift (or even Xcode for that matter).  You will still need to be able to at least read Objective-C/Swift/Java/whatever, since that is what the various API documentation is written for.

  • Do IOS app developers follow any good program practices?

I've had my iPad (original) a little over two years now, and I can say without a doubt, it is the most unstable platform I've used in nearly 30 years of using computers.  Most apps crash routinely, usually while at least one other app is running in the background.  Unloading the crashed app from memory and reopening uually works, but is a huge nuisance (and reason enough to me why iPads are not business-ready, except for specific task applications requiring mobility).  As one trained in both software and systems engineering, with 20 years IT experience mostly in engineering, I have to conclude that IOS app developers use "code and fix" development, with little testing before release.  Of course, in theory it could be that IOS itself isn't well designed to handle multitasking and doesn't provide adequate process isolation.  Either way, it makes for a frustrating experience as a user.
Has anyone else had similar issues?  Thoughts on why?

The original iPad does poorly with multiple apps open, the memory is just too small at 256 MB.  The processor is very slow compared to those in the current generation iPads.  And then couple that with developers who are for the most part independent of Apple and merely submit there products to Apple and you get a totally unpoliced set of apps.  Some are true professionals and follow very good programming practices, one that comes to mind is the GoodReader PDF reader.  Very stable and very powerfully built.  then you get into the gamers and Is is almost like they never heard of writing effecient, compact code.
The issue I see is a tightly controled operating system, with app developers handed a set of specs under which to code, but no real controls other than does the app run and is it free of malicious code.
    Just some thoughts.

  • Is there any downside mixing Objective-C with C++ for iOS apps?

I'd like to use C++ since it's fast and more dynamically in memory reference.
Is there any downside mixing Objective-C with C++ for iOS apps?
When googled for info, I only found tutorials about how to let xcode compile Objective-C with C++.
    Thanks for help.

Both Objective-C and C++ are (more or less) extensions of C.
C supports manipulation of pointers and casting of pointers, this implies that both Objective-C and C++ will be able to manipulate C data like arrays, structs ...
Objective-C has classes like NSData to read/write blocks of bytes from/to file and to access ranges of bytes when the data is loaded into memory.
C++ probably has similar classes (I'm not well versed in C++ so I don't know).
If you want to look into using C++ you will probably want to look at Objective-C++, the link below has links to docs on how to use C++ with Objective-C:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3684112/what-is-objective-c
Thanks for the info, NSData does what I need.
A replied in the link also mentioned that he's using C++ in his application too. As long as I'm aware of memory management (prevent memory leaks, etc) as @disguise said, it should be fine.
@etresoft indeed, but C is the base language of ObjC, there are ways to deal with.

  • Can I use macbook air for ios app development?

I would like to know if i can use macbook air for ios app development or macbook pro is only option?

Just to reinforce what shldr2thewheel says - be very sure what size memory you want if you get a Macbook Air. There is *no* way to change after purchase. My advice is to go for the 4GB option - especially if you want to do app development.
The internal storage (solid state drive) of the Air can be upgraded if required but it will probably be an expensive option. If you don't think the storage will be enough then maybe using a USB connected drive to hold non-essential files is an option.
As to deciding between the Air and Pro you are basically making a decision between portability (Air) and expandability/bigger screens (Pro). What is more important to you?

  • Top 10 feature requests for reliability

As per the Terms of Use:
Post constructive comments and questions. Unless otherwise noted, your Submission should either be a technical support question or a technical support answer. Feedback about new feature requests or product enhancements are welcome too.
    My top 10 list:
    1) Require enough extra safe guards that users can't accidentally rename their Home folder.
    2) Don't let the Finder become unresponsive and beach-balled when dot-mac mounting is occurring.
    3) Faster Finder list view updating when sorted by last modified.
    4) OS update scripts should perform a hard disk verify before installation. If hard disk does not verify, the user should be told of the risk of proceeding and given directions on how to fix before proceeding.
    5) The filesystem should should be able to fix itself with fsck (ala AppleJack) without being booted from install CD/DVD.
    6) iPhoto Library folder should have an extra layer of protection to keep users from messing with it via the Finder.
    7) Forced shutdown via power key should give OS and filesystem more of a chance for recovery. (Not sure how this would work, but if users are doing this, it should not be so often fatal.)
    8) System maintenance scripts should have a method for running (other than cron) for those who don't leave their computer on 24/7.
    9) & 10) coming soon ...
What are your feature requests for improved reliability?

    5) The filesystem should should be able to fix itself with fsck (ala AppleJack) without being booted from install CD/DVD.
David Pogue explains why this can't be done in his Mac OS X: The Missing Manual He basically says that running fsck without an operating system disc is much akin to "a doctor performing an appendectomy on himself." While a method of doing this is provided, naturally fsck itself is not analyzed because it can't do that. To run fsck without an operating system disc, boot into single user mode, holding command-S at startup. Type /sbin/fsck -fy
    followed by return key,
    when done type:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
followed by return key and when done with that type
    exit. This is documented here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Thankfully single user mode provides more safeguards. But they aren't perfect. Fixing the directory is something that should only be done if your data is backed up, and it is obvious you may have a damaged directory. A damaged directory may have the symptoms of a dying hard drive, and it is impossible to tell the difference.
Apple is readying a really good backup system in Time Machine in Leopard. You can read more about it here:

Your best protection for what you are looking for is to learn how to backup your data, as my FAQ* explains:

  • Feature Request for Adobe Media Encoder??

    Hi,
Why isn't there an option to make a feature request for 'Adobe Media Encoder' on the Adobe Feature Request page??? (Adobe Media Encoder isn't on the list of software)

Adobe Media Encoder now has its own entry in the feature-request and bug-report form:

  • Feature request for the windows version section..

Does there exist anywhere to raise feature requests for any future releases of MBSA?
The additional system information section of the report, and "windows version", it would be useful if it could include service pack number number, as well as flag it as a vulnerability (red X) if the version/SP level identified is out of Microsoft
support. That would be very useful.

For request like this you need to go here to the itunes feedback page http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp

  • Top feature requests for After Effects in 2012

Here's an article that I just posted about the top feature requests for After Effects made in 2012.
Please do make sure that you submit any feature requests here. Feature requests buried in a forum thread can get lost, but feature requests made here will certainly be tracked and retained.

I can't give a definitive answer regarding what we will or won't deliver in a specific future version of After Effects.
I think that buying Test Gear is a good idea, but that's just my personal opinion.

The MBA is so small and thin many people can't help thinking it is like a Windows netbook - an underpowered toy. It isn't. There's nothing I do on my top end iMac that I can't - and don't - do on my MBA. Of course the iMac has a faster processor, bus speed, and a discrete video card so it is much faster than my MBA. Then again, my computers spend more time waiting for me to do something than I wait for them - and this includes using Photoshop and compiling code.
If I were writing large programs - something like Word for example - I'd want a very fast processor to speed up the compile/debug/compile cycle. But for iOS development your codebase will be much smaller. Frankly I can't see that much difference between a 13" MBA and a 13" MBP for development purposes. Now a top of the line 15" MBP is a different matter with its much faster CPU and separate video card.

  • Need pointers for adding voip feature to an ios app

    Hi,
I am looking to add a voip feature to an Iphone and ipad app and wanted to check if there are frameworks within IOS that can be used to enable voip calls between two IOS devices.
Also, I wanted to check if there is publicly available or for purchase IOS code librabry for XMPP/Jingle that can be leveraged to build out the voip capability.

Sure! There is an AS3 branch in the zxing library. This should get you started (its for Androdi but should work for IOS too):
