A few quirks on new machine

Got two problems with a new machine:
The touchpad is *very* twichy.  Sometimes just moving the cursor over a button will select that button.  Is there a way to decrease the sensitivity of the touchpad??
Second problem is the battery icon in the taskbar.  When the battery is 100%, the text is white on a white background.  It's very tough to read the numbers.  Is there a way to change this??
This is a seriously sweet machine......

  • I  bought a new laptop (Dell ProBook; Windows 7.1) after a catastrophic crash of my old one. I installed my licensed copy of Photoshop CS3 on my new machine, and find that my activation key will not work.  Is this remediable, or am I simply stuck buying a

As indicated in the header question, I've been unable to get PS CS3 to run (other than in "trial period" mode) on my new laptop. I purchased CS3 a few years ago and had it up and running on my former (now deceased) machine; I still had the activation key. I installed the program on my new machine (running Windows 7.1), seemingly uneventfully. But when I now enter the activation key, I get an error message informing me that the number is not valid.
Does the activation key become invalid after a certain time period, or is there something I can fix? I'm interested in upgrading, but would like to have the familiar version available until I get around to doing so (just retired; lots of time-consuming changes afoot).
    Thanks for any help/info.

  • How to install Premiere CC (not 2014) on a new machine?

Just added a new machine to the studio, and am looking for a way to install Premiere Pro CC 7.2.x.
The rest of the studio still hasn't upgraded to 2014 (and, no offence Adobe, but your track record means there's a few good months of forum-watching standing between me and a site-wide upgrade to a .0 product from you )
This machine has a new license, but I've also tried swapping licenses with another suite so that this new computer is using a CC account from the 7.x era.
I understand I'm supposed to be able to click on "More Information" in the Creative Cloud app, but that's not an option for me. Only "View Tutorials". Note that only the Premiere Pro CC 2014, and not Premiere Pro CC, appears in my Creative Cloud app, presumably because of the fresh install.
Anyone know the proper workflow here or have a direct link?

    Hello
Generally speaking you can install recovery image on every compatible HDD so thee should not be any problem about it.
Please tell us what happen when you start recovery installation. Which error message is shown?
Is new HDD recognized in BIOS. Before you start recovery installation set BIOS to default settings.

  • Startup problems--time for a new machine?

I have an imac G5 that I bought last February. In the last few weeks I've been experiencing serious startup problems. When turned on, the screen goes gray and the lines and pixels fragment and shimmer. It takes a long time to go to the main screen and often the screen isn't stable and freezes. It takes me eight to ten startups to get the system stable.
I've repaired disk permissions, repaired h-drive, reset Pram. Still a mess. My husband wants me to just get a new one and get something that is not an Apple this time. I'm resisting that.
I don't want to lose all my data and I've backed up what I can but I'm worried the data is corrupted and if I load it on to a new machine, I will experience the same problems.
Any advice? I'm not even sure if this is a hardware or software problem. I'm out of warranty so I am on my own, but I'm frustrated to be having these problems with such a new machine.
    Thanks for any advice,

  • Material transfer - older to newer machine

    -
I just got a new “iMac”. — A 27 in. “duo”. Still in the box, still at the store.
And, I’m trying to gather as much information as I can, before shifting both my main focus, along with transfering, some portion of my main work at this point—(i.e. apps, files - general, plus larger catalogging of images)—from my older machine, to it.
I’m currently running OS 10.4.11, on an “eMac”. / - (w/ a full gig of RAM, plus a 300 gig HD.)
I’ve been told, that with using a fire-wire cable, I can transfer data from one machine to the other, with being guided where presented with the option/ opportunity to do so, where and when initially setting up my newer machine.
But, before I unpack my new machine, I’d like to find out - as much as can, more specifically, what’s possible - exactly, where considering this operation; .. if I elect to follow this line. — (Essentially, ... whether I can isolate all, of the material that I move over, and then, file it subsequently; .. which I would prefer. This, as opposed to its perhaps being routed to different areas - potentially, and “plugged in” to different things, more automatically - with my opting to follow this path; .. which I don’t, want.)
With this idea, I’m basically looking for some material online, which describes this process; .. i.e. the various options, more specific, it presents in fact.
This, or either perhaps, some simpler general guidance - relative to this idea, provided by someone here at this forum.
Of more incidental note - relative to this all above: I’ve got a 500 gig external HD - USB, set aside - also usable potentially, for whatever transfer of material.

Hi, when I get a new Mac this is what I do (5 family Macs)
Some of your 3rd party & other Apps will not run on the new 27"
I set up my Macs without Mig Asst. First set it up Out of Box, basic settings, I then Repair Permissions, then hopefully you use MobileMe -> you can Sync most of your Contacts, Bookmarks etc. etc..I then use the external HD to store my major files from the older Mac (sorting as required) & then you can dragNdrop onto your New Mac. 3rd party Apps will need Re-installing (CD-Rom or Internet)
You can also use your home network (if you have one) to accomplish some of the transfers..
I usually use the new Mac without to much on it for a few days, personalizing it to my requirements.
After that after each big transfer I run Repair Permissions...L

  • New machine install, terribly slow response

I'm hoping someone can shed some light here, I've recently built a new NLE for CS5.5 and the thing's incredibly slow to load, encode or even respond to an export command.
A few specs on the new machine:
Dual Xeon 3.47GHz 6 core CPU's, 12 cores total, 24 logical cores total
Supermicro X8DTL motherboard, intel 5500 chipset
24GB registered RAM in triple channel mode
Win7 Pro 64 bit with all updates
    Matrox MXO2 LE capture/playback
Nvidia GTX 580 4GB video card
Intel LSI MegaRaid SATA raid controller
7TB RAID 5 array on the RAID card
Installed software consists of PPro CS 5.5 suite, Avira anti virus and Firefox web browser.  Beyond that it's a clean install
    Now for my problems.
Premiere generally takes about 2 minutes to load from the desktop and is slow to respond after that.  I've loaded a 40 second HD timeline consisting of 2 XDCAM HD video clips and one stereo music track.  When I export this simple timeline it takes 3 minutes for the encode options to pop up, then once I select BluRay HD for the preset and queue it takes another 3 minutes before Media Encoder launches.  At the time I'm writing this Media Encoder has been encoding for 30 minutes and it's only about 50% done with that 40 second timeline.  For comparison my old dual core laptop with it's single internal drive takes about 30 seconds to launch Premiere (CS4 in it's case) and it encodes the same timeline in about 4 minutes.
Something's very wrong here; I'm hoping it's something simple like a wrong setting.  The computer itself seems to work fine and the Windows index benchmarks at 7.8 outside of a slower C drive coming in at 6.  All the project material is on the RAID and the programs and OS are on the C drive.  Anyone have any thoughts?  I'm going to have to get started on a major project shortly and I can't imagine doing it on this machine as it is.

Disconnecting from my LAN would be problematic in that several machines have files shared with the editor and vice versa... Lightwave for example is on a separate machine and most of my Photoshop stuff is on a third.  All machines are clean and checked daily for infection... at about 3AM so it doesn't try while I'm working.  If I suspect something I'll run Malwarebytes (in manual mode).  So far in the last 10 years I've only had one virus get through on my personal machine and nothing has hit any of the business ones.
I do have a hardware firewall on the LAN and I don't let Avira AV scan files while I'm editing.  I've used Avira free on my last 2 systems without any issues (one Avid Liquid and the other Premiere CS2).  I certainly wouldn't trust Norton or McAffee to walk the dog, let alone protect a machine... too much bloatware.
Jeff, I'm not totally sure what issues I still have; I'll find out this week as I get started on a project though.  (Fortunately no clients present so I've time to work out any lingering bugs... if I had to do it in front of clients I'd probably use the old machine.)  I did notice that disabling the SurCode solved the load issue anyway... my project with roughly 200 hours of XDCAM footage in several Bins loads in ~45 seconds or so.  Of course there's nothing yet on the timeline; that will probably slow things down some.  Oh, I'm not using any of the "max bit depth" settings and wasn't at the time I rendered out those bluray disks.  Maybe it's my imagination on the slowdown (once things actually opened) but it did take more than real time to encode a 45 minute bluray disk.  This was before I disabled the SurCode; hopefully that solved the issue.  Bottom line is that the system seems to function now, I'll know if anything else is out of whack as I actually start using the machine.
On RAID I simply do not trust RAID 0 for anything; I've lost days of work before due to a failure on a RAID 0 setup so I always use RAID 5 for safety.  I assumed that the Intel card would work as I've used an earlier model in my old Avid Liquid system with no problem and it was faster than an E-Sata external.  With 5 - 2TB drives for storage the odds of a RAID 0 failure don't seem appealing.

  • Error 30 on new machine

I have a new MacBook Air and built its disk from a TM backup (sparsebundle) of my previous MacAir - same username etc. I then tried to do a TM save from the new machine. TM asked me if I wanted to create a new sparsebundle or reuse the original (which could then not be used again to restore the old MacAir). I asked to reuse sparsebundle since I don't need to restore the old machine. Twice I got an Error 30 as follows:
    Starting standard backup
Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://My%[email protected]/Iomega%20HDD
Mounted network destination using URL: afp://My%[email protected]/Iomega%20HDD
Error writing Time Machine Information file: /Volumes/Iomega HDD/My Name’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle/com.apple.TimeMachine.MachineID.plist
    Backup failed with error: 30
    Ejected Time Machine network volume.
As you can see, the sparsebundle is mounted on an extended drive to the Time Capsule (Iomega HDD).
    Any thoughts?

    A few possibilities:
One is some names, oddly enough. See #C10 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
A corrupted preferences file (doubtful, but quick and easy to fix). Try a "full reset," per #A4 in Troubleshooting.
Damaged/corrupted backups. Repair them per #A5 in, well, you know.

  • How to re-associate tracks after migration to new machine?

A friend just got a new iMac, and is slowly trying to manually migrate her data over. I told her to just copy her iTunes folder from her backup into her Music folder on the new machine. Problem is, when she launches iTunes now, it can't find her music...
I'm guessing it's because she was pointing iTunes on her old Mac to her external drive where all the music was stored. So when she copies that directory to the Music folder on her new machine, it's still looking for the music on the external, right? How do we rectify this issue? Go ahead and point iTunes to the external drive on the new machine, then tell it (via Preferences) to use her Home Music folder as the music repository? Would it then allow her to copy the music over, and keep track of the moved files?
All very confusing, but I'm sure thousands of others have run into this issue before as well. What's the solution?
    Thanks,
    John

Trying to re-instal my email history the 'Mail Message Import' dialogue screen says: 'Mail needs to import your messages. This might take a few minutes. You won't be able to use Mail until the import is finished'.
The problem is: after importing 5,000 messages it stops and the 'Time remaining' only keeps adding up to many hours (17 hours). There are almost 80,000 email messages in my Time machine backup.
How to get this working? I am even prepared to give up my email history if i can only get my 'Mail' application working again.

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

  • HT3275 Reuse Time Machine Backup after moving to new Machine

So I've been using TIme Machine for ages, and usually the restore are fine, but one thing has always bugged me:
When I restore (say for a new hard drive) or bought a new machine (in this case i got the Retina MBP)... and i turn on Time Machine again... I haven't been able to find a way to use the old backup disk on my Time Capsule.
Looking into the support info, I found this:
Message: Time Machine starts a new, full backup instead of a smaller incremental backup
There are three reasons why this may occur:
    You performed a full restore.
Your Computer Name (in Sharing preferences) was changed--when this happens, Time Machine will perform a full backup on its next scheduled backup time.
If you have had a hardware repair recently, contact the Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store that performed your repair. In the meantime, you can still browse and recover previous backups by right-clicking or Control-clicking the Time Machine Dock icon, and choosing "Browse Other Time Machine disks" from the contextual menu.
Reading that, I'm led to assume that's just one of the quirks and I can't do anything, and deleting Time Machine backups is quite a hassle as it is.
Is there really no way for my new Retina Macbook to use my old MBP time machine backup and just keep adding incremental data to it? It seems redundant then as say a week ago I deleted something... I actually have no way of getting to it now if I deleted the backup and started again. At the moment, my Time Capsule doesn't have enough space for a complete new one, so i'd HAVE to delete the old one.
Is there a way around this?
    Thanks.

    ladines wrote:
My account name is the same in both systems.
The account name isn't what controls the permissions;  it's the automatically-assigned and mostly-invisible User ID number, also called a UID.  The first user account you create is number 501, the next 502, etc.  So if you ever had more than one user account, the one(s) you have now may be different.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for a detailed explanation.
You really can't change the permissions on Time Machine backups (that would kinda defeat the purpose).
Try creating another account, and see if it has permission to the backups.  If it does, you have a couple of options:
    * Copy everything now on your system to the new User Account you created above.  That's tedious and error-prone, but can be done.  See Transferring files from one User Account to another.
    * Your existing user account should be able to see and restore from new backups (done from the new drive).  When you need to view or restore things from the old backups, use the new account.  Eventually, as the older backups are deleted, the problem will fade away.

  • Transferred to a new machine

I Have recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro and I have just
installed Dreamweaver 8 on it. Problem is I don't know what folders
/ files to transfer to and where to retaain sites, ftp details,
passwords etc? I have a cloned copy of my previous machine on an
external hard Drive so I have all the files I need, and I just need
to know where they need to sit?

    > ope, I didn't do that before I sold the machine?
    DEFINITIONS ( are they dftp
    > detials etc?) don't they sit anywhere? do they have to
    ve exported?
the site definitions contain the information that is used to
    Define a Site
in dreamweaver... The location of the local folder, the
    remote server, the
    ftp username/password and so on.
IF you still have the old machine running- go into dw
    menu-->Site-->Manage
Sites and select a site from list and click EXPORT. Save the
    .ste file.
    Repeat for each site.
move the .ste files to the new machine (keep in one folder)
    dw menu-->Site-->Manage Sites
click Import and browse to the .ste file.
repeat for each (dw8 should "see" and import all .ste files
    in that folder
    automatically though)
If you don't have the old running but have a full copy of the
    old HD, you
could put a copy of the old Preferences file into the proper
    location on the
    new machine.
    Macintosh running osX:
    Dreamweaver 4 users:
    HD/users/<user>/Library/Preferences/Dreamweaver/Preferences
    Dreamweaver MX users:
    HD/users/<user>/Library/Preferences/Dreamweaver MX
    Prefs
    Dreamweaver 2004
    HD/users/<user>/Library/Preferences/Dreamweaver MX 2004
    Prefs
    Dreamweaver 8 users:
    HD/users/<user>/Library/Preferences/Dreamweaver 8 Prefs
After moving the file, restart dw. The list of sites should
    then show in the
new install on the new machine.
You should then step through each defined site to edit them
    for any changes
in the local site folder's location (because of a different
    HD or User name
    on the new machine)
    things to check-
local info, location of Local Site folder, and location of a
    default image
    folder
site tab- location of site's 'homepage'
This assumes that you have already moved the "Local Site
    Folder" for each
defined site onto the new machine. The local site folder is
    what contains
all the site's assets- the image files and html page files.
If the HD name or user changed, there may also be wrong paths
    in the helper
applications list on the dw preferences-->file types and
    editors list.
***My suggestion- if it's only a few sites involved, hand
    define them one by
one to avoid messing the preferences file up. Only move the
    file if it's
like 30 or more sites and you want to save time.***
(if you don't have the ftp info written down someplace, you
    can extract them
from the preferences file. go to
    http://navbars.net and follow the
    "lost
password" link) Then Write The Info Down....

  • Trouble deleting unselectable user folders on new machine

I just recently got a new iMac and was switching files into from my older machine. I had folders for each member of the family under the "places" section on the left hand side of the desktop. Now I have those folders there on the new machine, but they are unselectable, and so I can't delete them. I've already  re-copied legitimate family member folders from my LaCie external HD, but I'd love to get rid of the ghost folders. How?

I had the same problem with migration assistant after a hard disk failure & it wasn't wanting to restore since it was a new computer.  I keep my time machine BU on a time capsule, not a thumb drive, so the first few steps below may vary.
So, look in shared & see if you can find your time machine drive & double-click to open.  There should be a folder called Data.  Open that.  It will take a while to populate, just wait.
There should be 1 (or more if you set up a new machine name at some pt) sparsebundle files in there.  Doubleclick the one you want; it will mount a disk image called Timemachine Backups.  That contains a folder called backups.backupdb.  Open that.  It should have your machine name, open that.  There should be a whole bunch of dated folder; pick the most recent one.  Open that.  It should contain a folder with your boot drive name.  Open that.  Then you should find folders with copies of all the folders you have on there.  You can then drag contents to the matching places on your new machine.  Some applications may not install properly this way, but most of mine did.  Those that didn't I had to get the installer disks our or redownload them.
SO far Time Machine has worked pretty well, except for attempting to fix printer drivers that got hosed by Lion, & got wiped out completly in the repair attempt.  Migration Assistant didn't work.

i bought my wife an ipad retina for xmas and the machine is faulty, it keeps on switching off. the apple authorised dealer admitted it was faulty and wants to replace my new machine with a factory refurbished unit. I told them that i will only accept a new one as it is only a few weeks old and had the problem from the begining? is it correct that apple replaces new defective products with factory refurbished one? I have used apple products most of my life from mac 2 to G5. I had over a dozen apple machines and never had a problem so far? I do not believe this is right..

I am an apple fan and expect excellent service like the products themselves.
No one ever does sign anything - the purchase itself, where you exchange money for the product, is your de facto agreement to all warranties and policies set forth by both the seller and the OEM supplier.  That's a pretty firmly established principle of consumer law (image the nightmare if you had to read and sign to such things every time you purchased anything or everything?).
You can complain to the store or to Apple about it if you wish.

I have an ipad2 which i am thinking of upgrading to the new ipad3.
I have purchased quite a few apps and wish to know if i can just use them on the new machine or will i have to purchase them again.

If you register both iPads with the same Apple ID, all your previously purchased apps will be available for free in App Store under the "purchased" tab.
