A few words of encouragement

Ever since I heard about the iPhone back at the beginning of the year, I wanted one. When it was finally released on June 29, I didn't rush out to get one. I logged on here and started reading about everyone's experience (both good and bad).
For several weeks, I read about people's problems and issues. My main concern were reception at my house. I was already on AT&T and get a solid one bar inside my house, with the occasional dropped call. I was starting to get disillusioned hearing about activation problems, reception, it does this but won't do that, email, Safari, battery, audio problems. The list went on and on. I finally went to an AT&T store and played with one. Not bad, I thought. (The "experts" at the AT&T store are not quite the experts at the Apple store.)
Well, to make an already long story longer, I pulled the trigger and bought an iPhone (at an Apple store). I've had it 3 weeks now. And here is my recommendation: if you are hesitant to get one, don’t be. I have had none of the issues I read about on here (not that I won't tomorrow, knock on wood). Activation took all of 2 minutes (although I did lose my corporate discount on AT&T service...$9/month) Reception is at least equal to or better than what I had before (Nokia 6102). Solid one (and occasional two) bars. BUT...the iPhone seems to hold what little signal there is better. I have had no dropped calls at my house. Updates went smoothly with no issues. Battery life seems to have improved over time. No sound level problems, no dead pixels, no freezes or need to restore/reset; actually, no problems at all. It's worked exactly as advertised.
Is the iPhone perfect? No. But I honestly think Apple will improve the software over time. But if you've been reading these forums and are a little hesitant to get one, don't be. Just research all the features ahead of time to make sure it does what YOU need it to. For me, it does what I need: mostly phone, checking email and web sites a couple of times a day and occasional iPod use.
These forums are for airing problems and asking for help. We seldom hear about the hundreds of thousands of users who have had NO problems. (BTW, does anyone know how many of these things have been sold/activated?)

I foolishly traded my absolutely-perfect iPhone for a Nokia N95 recently, because I thought I needed more features...and only a week later, I have another iPhone coming in the mail that I am trading my N95 for. I realized within a couple of days that I had made a mistake. I am not at all a "techie", and the feature-packed N95 intimidated me with complexity...where the iPhone excited me with it's effective simplicity.
The iPhone does what I need it to do. In fact, it does it better than most any mobile phone I have ever used...and I have had MANY high-end phones. Is it perfect...far from it. But, I believe that Apple will come along with updates very soon to cure some of the shortcomings like low earpiece volume, nonexistant speakerphone volume...and other niggling issues that plague most of us. And...I would be very suprised if they didn't come along soon and add some of the smartphone features some others have been clammoring for as well.
I am along for the ride. Meanwhile...I can't wait for my new iPhone to get here!!!

    You can type the email using what you set in preferences and then highlight the text and use command - minus sign (or command - + for larger) to reduce the size of the text.
    You can also type command - T and a window will appear allowing you to select fonts/sizes/color/ background highlight.
    The above works in Notes also. I haven't tried to do this in any other Apple application.
    For incoming emails, you can use the above to reduce font size, but I don't know of a way to permanently set the incoming font size to a default.

  • Why does my Mac auto-select the next few words or even sentences after i select and delete a batch of text?

    For instance, if i were to select the next seven words and then over-write or delete them, the next few words would automatically become selected and, because i'm already typing, i would over-write them as well.  The more words that i initially select, the more words become selected after i hit delete.  You can imagine how annoying this might be when i decide to chuck an entire paragraph, select it, begin to over-write, and then realise that i've just over-written most of the next paragraph and part of the previous.
    This can't possibly be a feature so i don't what option i might have chosen that would've prompted this kind of behaviour from my Mac.  It's done it intermittently over the last year that i've owned it.  It usually begins after an edit or two within a given document or email.  Once it begins, it doesn't stop, it just gets worse.

    Firefox allows to select part of a word. You can select a word with a double click and use Shift + left click to set the end of the selection, so you need to click at the end of the last word instead of in it.

  • Can write a few words, can't send any messages

    Recently, with a pop account in Mail, Version 2.1, I can only write a few words (for a new message) and I can't send it.

    The solution suggested by Bryan should work. This problem in Mail is usually caused by some Launch Services cache or preferences corruption. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services -- the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:

    It seems that the most appropriate utility for solving this particular problem is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:

    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.

  • Notes - How do I stop it from saving a copy every a few words?

    When I select "All Notes" there are 20-40 copies of each note and each one has just a few words less than the previous one which means it's doing some kind of auto-save. I don't want it to do this because it makes it harder to look through the notes and its completely unneccsary. There is no preferences to adjust anything so I have no idea how to change anything.

    I'm using 10.8.5 so it's right on the dock and connects to email or apple id's.
    I'm not sure how it lead me to the 10.5.8 section I just clicked moutain lion within iCloud section.

  • Satellite L500-19E - Microphone stops working after few words

    Hi,
    About 2 weeks I have a new L500-19E with Windows 7 and it worked fine. But since a few days I have trouble with my microphone, no matter if I use the internal or an external headset/mic. The issue is that it seem to work for a few seconds only, e.g. trying a call via skype, teamspeak etc. but people only hear my hello and a few more words, then they only hear me very quite. The settings all seem to be fine and I already downloaded/installed the newest realtek drivers but nothing helps.
    Does anyone has an idea what the issue can be and how to fix?

    Really strange, stammann. Have you also tried to update the webcam driver? I ask this because the microphone is a part of the webcam so you should also update this driver. Just check the Toshiba page for an update:

    Have you also activated Microphone boost? You can check this in Windows sound settings.

  • Is there a way to search through pdf looking for a few words "in close proximity" to each other?

    I started this question in an Adobe Reader forum, but am reposting here.
    Within one pdf, I'm trying to find the locations where two words appear close to each other. The document is a manual of Structured Framemaker from Adobe. The words are "context" and "element" (I'm trying to find out what "context" means in EDD in Framemaker).
    Using Advanced Search on Acrobat XI Professional, but the response is the same in Acrobat XI Reader, i.e. zero results.
    Putting a comma between words doesn't change results.
    Selecting either of these doesn't change results:
    --Match Any of the words
    --Match Exact word or phrase
    Clicking on the Show More Options adds a Proximity box but I've been unable to make the box selectable (it's greyed out).
    Although I'm only interested in the results of the one pdf, I was advised to select a whole folder. When I select a directory, additional options appear, but the Proximity button is still unselectable.
    What turns ON the Proximity button?
    Is there a way to change Acrobat default so that the More Options is always turned on?

    Proximity will become available if you're using a index (Tools > Document Processing > Full Text Index with Catalog), which you can create with Acrobat Pro for just this single document if you place it in a folder by itself. You will also have to select "match all words" or whatever the exact wording is in the advanced seach panel.

    I have installed Exchange 2010 in 4 servers: 2 CAS + HUBS  ...+... 2 Mailboxes.
    I see in my Exchange management console this word: "Exchange On-Premises" and "New Exchange Forest".
    I am a bit confused about having two trees to manage Exchange now.
    Could I ask for a brief definition of "Exchange On-Premises" ?
    . I am new to Exchange 2010 and almost new to Exchange in general, and I get confused with what I read, which are long texts.

    On-Premises means Exchange infrastructure installed locally in your network premises means you would be able to manage on-premise 2 CAS + HUBS  ...+... 2 Mailboxes that you have under various tabs

    I just wanted to say that I have had nothing but a great experience with my I4. Yeah its got an antenna issue, but only if your a southpaw. If this is the case then you're already used to being different. Great product Steve. Please continue putting out great electronics.

    Dude if you've had such an awful experience with your new phone, why not just return it and be done with it. I did it when iphone 3G came out, had horrible issues which took a few os upgrades to fix. Not me, i just returned, hooked my moto back on, and said, "i will try next year" I did! And did not regret it

    Naming layers is vital.  Layer management is important.  But no, you can't color code layers.  It'd be nice.  In the "Motion" menu (left of the File menu) inside the app, there's a chose to go to the feedback page.  Tell the dev team you want it.

    Sorry that my guess about what you are using was wrong. How about telling us exactly what you installed to provide that '''auto translate''' feature in Firefox?
    If you don't know, give us a list of the extensions that you ''do'' have installed so that we don't have to wildly guess or so we can do an '''''educated guess''''' as to which one isn't working.
    Help > Troubleshooting Information = use the '''Copy all to clipboard''' button, then paste into a text editor program. Then delete all but the list of '''Extensions''' and copy'n'paste that to the Reply box here.
