A formal request.

I would like to formally address an issue regarding Adobe's
support of the Linux platform.
As a professional, I have been using Linux for years. I
started my technical consulting and support business running Linux
primarily on my desktops and servers, using productivity
applications such as OpenOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, GNUCash, and
others to get work done. I have gotten along great with it, and am
proud to say that to this day, I am an avid Linux user and
supporter. I haven't been able to find one reason to switch to
another platform with my business yet.
Recently I was contracted by an elementary school district in
Northern California to convert all of their student computer labs
from Windows 2000 workstations to Linux/LTSP thin clients. This is
a common situation for educational institutions these days, as
software licensing is becoming a rather large headache for those
with limited IT budgets, not to mention the ease of administration
with thin client networks compared to the traditional
workstation/server network model.
I am on school 2/7, setting up servers and reconfiguring
aging clients to boot from the network...myself and the district's
IT staff could not be happier with the way things are working out -
with one exception.
Unfortunately, the time I have primarily used setting up
Linux LTSP computer labs have been dealing with getting Firefox
Flash and Shockwave players working correctly. Here is our standard
lab setup for the 7 schools to be converted:
- HP Proliant ML370 G5 server (dual quad-core Intel Xeon
64-bit processors, 8GB RAM)
- Neoware e100 thin clients (32-bit, 128mb RAM)
- Ubuntu Linux (64-bit server edition 7.04)
Our first issue was Flash. Although Flash 9 has been released
for Linux (although much later than it was for Windows/Mac), the
only architecture it supports is i386 (32-bit). This required a
*completely* separate install of Firefox (the 32-bit version),
alongside the standard 64-bit version installed with Ubuntu 64-bit.
This took a lot of time (and money for the schools) to accomplish.
I found, after much research and headache, a script which attempts
to automate the technical nightmare that is installing 32-bit
browsers/plugins in a 64-bit environment. It is here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202537
. This, I thought, was the end of a big hurdle to get the schools
migrated to Linux.
Unfortunately, it wasn't. The 32-bit version of Firefox,
being a browser with a different CPU architecture, does not
correctly talk to default Ubuntu installed printer libraries. I
doubt many who develop for Ubuntu could have caught this, since it
is the community that plugs these holes, specifically for these
types of situations.
So, even if the students could now use Flash-enabled
websites, they could now not print anything from their browsers.
The next (major) roadblock is Shockwave. Now, it seems that
Adobe is completely ignoring Linux support for Shockwave all
together. There are no indications of any Linux support for the
Shockwave player/Firefox browser plugin for Linux. This is a MAJOR
issue, as the students' curriculum use Shockwave-enabled websites
to learn. Basically, if we can't get Shockwave running on our Linux
network, the students will be missing out on a major educational
portal, which means the learning process that goes on in school is
crippled. This would all be due to the lack of support Adobe is
giving the Linux platform.
On top of these issues, the fact that Adobe is only releasing
its players in 32-bit architectures is extremely hard to believe.
Even if Shockwave is ported to Linux, the possibilitiy of it (or
Flash) being compiled for 64-bit architectures is but a far cry in
the woods for a Starbucks double espresso. I simply do not see how
Adobe is holding back on putting their resources to unifying their
Internet-standard web products such as Flash and Shockwave. In my
(very humble) opinion, Adobe is doing a great disservice to the
Internet community as a whole, and is being very irresponsible as a
major software company that so many people rely on for their
Internet experience.
Please give more of your resources to the development of
unifying your web-based players such as Flash and Shockwave. It was
said in an article here:
http://www.linux.com/feature/32077
, that Adobe would make a Shockwave player for Linux if they
received a "few thousand requests".
Well, take a look at this online petition to get Shockwave on
Linux:
http://www.petitiononline.com/linuxswp/petition.html
. If you click on "View Current Signatures", you will find as of
2007/09/12, 10:29am PDT, 26,275 signatures have been added. A 'few
more' than a 'few thousand', don't you think?
I eagerly await a response from any Adobe representative on
this issue. I am determined to get what so many are asking for, and
I am willing to spend even more of my time to show Adobe what they
need to see from the people they are working for.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Jordan Erickson

Thank you Adobe for your ignorance in questions of amd64
flash. There is so much advertising is passing by and not stopping
on my computer that i probably saved myself a fortune on traffic. I
am so much thankful to you for not releasing BIG products like
Photoshop to Linux platform which gave me a good opportunity to
check out open source alternatives. I am not a designer, but rather
all around computer enthusiast, so my Photoshop skills were still
very well implemented in Gimp, even though i am not doing design
for life. However I am not Adobe hater. I still use Adobe Acrobat,
even though i know some very good alternative products, question of
price is irrelevant, since all of them are free.

Since I made the decision to explore Flex as a development tool, I've been continually astounded by the sheer power of the application. In the beginning, the migration from the Flash IDE to Flex seemed daunting. The further I went, however, the more incredible it revealed itself to be. Ideas could now be realized quickly and easily, allowing more time to be creative instead of being wrapped entirely in technical puzzles. Then, on top of that, we could include other technologies such as Papervision, Ribbit and so forth. Combine all this with the additional ability to skin our application and you've got nothing short of great.
Now, I still consider myself a novice in Flex, despite putting in a lot of hours learning and working with the application. That is why it is becoming somewhat frustrating to see that with Flash Builder, or a new SDK (in Flex Builder) things begin to break apart. This is to be expected and I understand this, however.. I won't give a lengthy explanation of the obstacles I've had to overcome to migrate (or fix) my application to Flash Builder 4, or a newer SDK, but I believe, after all has been said and done, Adobe should consider including a Migration Assistant/Wizard into the Flash Builder 4 application. This would be for developers who have worked exclusively with Flex Builder 3.3 (and perhaps a lower SDK such as version 4.0.0.4600) and are attempting to import that project, CSS styles and all, into Flash Builder 4. Just something that would 'update all necessary elements' necessary to just 'make it work'. There could be prompts to ask if the user wants to update various aspects of the application and formally turn it into an exclusive Flash Builder 4 project.
    Just a thought.

I see  a few issues with migration wizards, but the biggest concern is they introduce laziness(lack of due care by the developer once a conversion has taken place). The true coder's IDE is still fairly new to Adobe so we should expect the unexpected.
Borland/Codegear and Microsoft have been developing IDE's for the better part of 2 decades, both have had conversion wizards thru the years and these wizards tended to cuase more issues than they were worth especially when there was a major version change and lets face it this is the scenario where someone would more likely want a wizard.
Flex 4 sdk is a major shift from Flex 3, Where as 2-3 was an upgrade I don't see the same for 3-4, As soon as I started using the Flex 4 sdk my first thought was to start labeling FB3 code as legacy.
The experience gained moving legacy code into a current/evolving environment is something you can't buy.
Adobe does have reference material documenting FB3 to FB4 changes but it needs to be more concise, updated more frequently (in-line with 'stable' sdk builds).
A well documented migration giudeline with examples would be invaluable and far more effective than wizards.
Some of the guys at Adobe mention a couple of weeks ago that the changes to the SDK should be fairly moderate from now on which also means the issues experienced when updating the  SDK should start to stabilize(mind you it seems the progress of the sdk went dark(code freeze) a week ago which could be an indication of some more heavy duty changes coming.)
At the end of the day wizards may work reasonably well on code that doesn't deviate from expected coding practises but you can't beat manual conversion changes for knowing how, where and why code has changed, this becomes rather handy if the behaviour of your masterpiece suddenly changes after a conversion.
One way of keeping in the loop with the SDK is to use svn versions rather than the builds and follow the versioning logs that comes with it. I update a couple of times a week(its only 6-7 minutes to compile and test the SDK) then look at compare changes in the code if the updates are more than bug fixes. Sifting through the code changes is a big part of my own way of familiarisation with the SDK.

  • GRC AC Request Role Creation

    Hello all,
I noticed that by default GRC AC doesn´t have a Request Type for Role Creation. Normally how this is done? I mean, if someone realizes that a new role is necessary, how can this person report the need for a new role creation? What are my option here?
    Regards,
    SAP Legend

    Hi SAP Legend,
You can not request a new role to be created via an Access Request workflow. You still need a business governance strategy where someone has to raise a request outside of the GRC system for the new roles through the right channels deemed fit in your company to get the new role made. Maybe you have a support ticketing system in place or some SAP security department you can raise the formal requests to.
The BRM Role creation/maintenance workflow runs separately from the Access Request workflow. Further more, the definition and creation process of roles via GRC should only involve and be used by Business Process Owners/Role Owners and the Authorisation security team only, i.e. not general end users.
A role build methodology will have to be set up and then the underlying approval workflows (based in MSMP technology also, like the AR workflow).
Once the role has been built (either via back end PFCG) or via GRC using the BRM methodology and approval flows, the role will be available to the end user to request via AR.
    Hope that helps.

  • Request: B1 - B2 Migration tool

Very understandable that the rapid development of the beta will change the FXP filesystem and structure, but I'd like to put out a formal request for a migration tool between formats.  Is very difficult to log this many hours on projects helping to bug-hunt and make feature requests just to abandon our projects at the end of the day.  Don't get me wrong, am a relentless supporter of Adobe and the Fc team here.  Fc is a beautiful product filled with potential, and dealing with the intricacies of code generation is a nightmare I'm overjoyed i'll never have to face... but no migration at all is a tremendous hurdle toward pushing/keeping adoption.
Imagine selling this to a CEO, "We'd like to ramp up with the Fc platform, but every few months everything we've done will need to be thrown out".  Tough sell!
Regardless, congrats to the team, Fc-b2 looks amazing so far.
    Chad

    Hi Chad,
I'm sorry about the frustration you're having with old projects no longer working--we feel the pain internally in the team as well. As you noted, there have been many changes to the underlying beta Flex framework as well as other aspects of Catalyst projects since beta 1, and it would be difficult to create a robust conversion tool. Over time, as the framework and the tool both settle down, we should be able to achieve better compatibility, and of course once we ship 1.0 we will be committed to supporting FXPs from the shipping product in future versions.
    Sorry about that,
    nj

  • WVC80n GPL firmware released (upon request)

    Hey gang,
I sent a formal request to Cisco for the GPL sources contained in the WVC80n, and they were very responsive.
Cisco/Linksys very quickly uploaded the GPL firmware online, and now I'm sharing the link with you:
    http://www.filehosting.org/file/details/186607/wvc80n_gpl_cisco_usa_fw_v1.0.00_build_08.tar.tar
Hopefully the same bits are deposited to Cisco's official GPL download site soon, but for now you can fetch them from the above 3rd party. I take no responsibility for what the link points to, and the file size is ~150 MB.
IF anybody has any questions please let me know.

  • To Adobe Management - Multi-User guide request.

I would like to formally request that some kind of guidebook or whitepaper be produced by Adobe providing a clear workflow for Lightroom when more than one computer is involved in accessing the original files.
Start with one assumption: the original images are on a Network drive.
As far as I can tell, the only way to do this with any effectiveness is to sneaker-net a USB drive that contains the catalog and previews, and if necessary re-find the originals when needed by re-pointing for the lost folder.
It is still single user, but it works.
What is the OFFICIAL Adobe workflow design for more than one person using Lightroom?

The "Official Talking point" that seems to be parroted over and over when discussing sharing a catalog between computers is that it is "not supported", but that is totally unhelpful.
The fact is that there are situations where more than one photographer needs to work with a catalog. It may not be possible to do so at the very same time as another photographer, but it is possible to share a catalog one person / computer at a time.
This also helps if you need to use Lightroom on more than one computer, or consolidate from laptop to central storage after a field session.
The scenario is that that two photographers are working on their own photo sets from an event in order to share the workload. Each photographer took his/her own photos, and needs to remove the trash, renumber the photos, do initial ranking, etc, but in the end the photos need to be consolidated into a single location and library, so all the photos can be seen as a cohesive group,
Here are the basic steps that work for me:
    a) On their own computers, each photographer downloads their own photos and eventually imports them to their own local catalog, either existing or new.
    b) Sort, rank and cleanup the photos, as you would always do, independently on each computer.
    c) Both photographers when done perform an "Export Catalog" and check 'include negatives', and place them both at their final location on the NAS device. This will create two standalone catalogs and copy the original files to their new final location. The catalogs are temporary and can be deleted later after they are consolidated,
    d) Consolidate the catalogs onto a USB drive. This is what will allow the catalog to be relatively easy to be shared by both photographers by passing the USB drive back and forth between computers.
    - When everyone is done exporting their catalogs to the NAS, one photographer creates a NEW catalog, or opens an existing catalog on a designated USB drive that will be used for sharing the catalog. We use a 2.5 inch 100 GB pocketdrive.
    - The temporary catalogs on the NAS are imported into the new or existing catalog on the USB drive.
    - After the catalog import is done, it may be necessary to right click on a folder and 'Locate Missing Folder' to point back to the originals on the NAS device.
    - To improve performance, if time allows a 'Library -> Previews -> Render Standard-Sized Previews' should be done in the new catalog in order to make sure that the preview set is up to date. This can take a long time.
At this point you have a catalog on the USB drive that can be easily shared between computers, just by plugging the USB drive in and opening the catalog file directly from the USB drive.
If you are using only Mac systems, there should be no need to find the originals again when the drive is moved between computers. You just need to have a connection to the NAS established BEFORE you open the Lightroom catalog.
If you are using only PC systems, there should be no need to find the originals again, as long as the NAS is mapped to a similar drive letter and path.
If you are using a mix of Mac and PC, you will probably have to do a "Locate missing folder" each time the USB drive swiitches between system types in order to remap the catalog to the right location.
    ==========
In reality, doing sneakernet with these catalogs is pretty ridiculous given the state of modern databases and networked computers, but we are not given a choice in this case.
If anyone has any ideas on how to improve this method of consolidating then sharing workflows, I would appreciate your input.

  • Misc Basic PL/SQL Application Design/Programming Questions 101 (101.1)

---****** background for all these questions is at bottom of this post:
    Question 1:
I read a little on the in and out parameters and that IN is "by reference" and OUT and IN-OUT are by value. To me "by reference" means "pointer" as in C programming. So it seems to me that I could call a function with an IN parameter and NOT put it on the right side of an assignment statement. In other words, I'm calling my function
    get_something(IN p_test1 varchar2) return varchar2;
from SP1 which has a variable named V_TEST1.
So.... can I do this? (method A):
    get_something(V_TEST1);
or do I have to do this (method B):
    V_TEST1 := get_something(V_TEST1);
Also, although this may muddy the thread (we'll see), it seems to me that IN, since its by reference, will always be more efficient. I will have many concurrent users using this program: should this affect my thinking on the above question?
    -- ******* background *******
So Far:<< I've read and am reading all over the net, read and reading oracle books from oracle (have a full safari account), reading Feurstein's tome, have read the faq's here.
Situation Bottom Line:<< Have an enormous amount to do in a very little time. Lots riding on this. Any and all pointers will be appreciated. After we get to some undetermined point I can re-do this venture as a pl/sql faq and submit it for posting (y'alls call). Some questions may be hare brained just because I'm freaking out a little bit.
Situation (Long Version):<< Writing a pl/sql backend to MS Reporting Services front end. Just started doing pl/sql about 2 months ago. Took me forever to find out about ref-cursor as the pipe between oracle and all client applications. I have now created a package. I've been programming for 20 years in many languages, but brand new to pl/sql. However, pl/sql sql has freed me from myriad of limitations in MS RS's. My program is starting to get big (for me -- I do a lot in a little) pks is currently 900 lines with 15 functions so far. Currently SP (pls) is back up to 800 lines. I get stuff working in the sp then turn it into a function and move it to the package.
What does application do?:<<<< Back End for MS Reporting Services Web front end. It will be a very controlled "ad-hoc" (or the illusion of ad-hoc) web interface. All sql queries are built at run-time and executed via "open ref cusor for -- sql statement -- end;" data returned via OUT ref_cursor. Goal is to have almost 100% of functionality in a package. Calling SP will be minimalist. Reporting Services calls the SP, passes X number of parameters, and gets the ref_cursor back.
Oracle Version: 10.2 (moving to 11g in the next 3 months).Environment: Huge DW in a massively shared environment. Everything is locked down and requires a formal request. I had to have my authenticated for a couple dbms system packages just to starting simple pl/sql programs.

So it seems to me that I could call a function with an IN parameter and NOT put it on the right side of an assignment statement. The IN parameter is not passing by reference. It is passing by value. This means variable/value of the caller used as parameter, is copied to the (pushed) stack of code unit called.
An OUT parameter means that the value is copied from the called unit's stack to the caller (and the current value of the caller's variable is overwritten).
To pass by reference, the NOCOPY clause need to be used. Note that is not an explicit compile instruction. The PL/SQL engine could very well decide to pass by value and not reference instead (depending on the data type used).
Note that the ref cursor data type and the LOB data types are already pointers. In which case these are not passed reference as they are already references.
The NOCOPY clause only make sense for large varchar2 variables (these can be up to 32KB in PL/SQL) and for collection/array data type variables.
As for optimising PL/SQL code - there are a number of approaches (and not just passing by reference). Deterministic functions can be defined. PL/SQL code can be written (as pipelined tables) to run in parallel using the default Oracle Parallel Query feature. PL/SQL can be manually parallelised. Context switches to the SQL engine can be minimised using bulk processing. Etc.
Much of the performance will however come down to 2 basic issues. How well the data structures being processed are designed. How well the code itself is modularised and written.

  • Verizon sales associates and or customer service personnel practice deceitful behavior in order to eliminate unlimited plans in any way they can..

I called up customer service n order to shut off one of my lines as a disciplinary action towards one of my children. I'm sure its a fairly common event. As I was completing this task, the representative advised me that instead of paying the data plan at 30.00 dollars a month, I should shut off the data for the duration of this lines shut down. Well that was very nice indeed! here my company is trying to say me money. after all, I'm not using the line, why should I pay for data that I would not be using.. Okay! That's great!!! Thank you very much. You see, I had told them I was taking it down for 3 or 4 months so my child could raise their grades and prove their ability to graduate high school. At that point I would turn it back on. So great! The line is off and I'm not paying data! Only thing that is affected is the length of the contract. It would be extended the same amount of time as the phone line was of.. This is reasonable.
FAST FORWARD! My daughter graduates with HONORS!!! Yes I'm proud of her. So first things first. She did as she was told. She get her phone back! Now I go and turn on the line and find afterward that my once unlimited plan for that phone will now be charged at 2 gigs per month and Verizon has thrown out my unlimited data package on this phone line! I ask why. They state that since I choose to voluntarily shut off the data package, I forfeited my grandfathered unlimited package on this line. I also was told that since the line was shut off for more than 60 days that they would not restore my plan based on the fact that I voluntarily shut it off and canceled my data package for this line.  Okay! That's great!!! Thank you very much.Sound familiar? The nice representative who was saving me money every month never told me I would loose my unlimited data package if I shut off my data after I suspended my line need less to say, ON THEIR ADVISE!!!  So as far as I'm concerned, the representative was just following the call from above to do what ever they had to in order to get rid of unlimited data lines. After all, Verizon sold millions of data ready phone knowing full well that their infer-structure couldn't handle the mass influx of data being pull in by happy unlimited data customers!! So one on the most powerful communication companies on the planet has turned to lies and deceit and misleading tactics to get back any little bit of operating space in their systems, no matter what it costs their  customers. After all why should Verizon have to pay for upgrades. How will they ever survive!! How you ask?!?!? Why it's simple. Put the cost back on their own customers. After all, If they want good service make them pay for it. If they don't pay enough ( myself 310.00 a month average for 3 lines!) then hell, charge them more!
I was lied to and misled by a Verizon representative. They cancelled my unlimited data package with out explaining that if i did cancel it at that time i would not get it back! this all after I questioned the fact that I was concerned about losing the package. I was assured EVERYTHING WAS OK AND IT WOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM.
I filed a complaint with customer service on 6/2/12 concerning this matter and was told that it would take up to 14 days for this to be reviewed and at that time I would be contacted by a manager involved it this type of problem. So today 6/12/12 , after waiting 11 days decided to call and see how this process was coming along. Come to find out, my dispute was denied on 6 /5/12 because I voluntarily shut off the data package and the line was off for more that 60 days. these two things were never told to me when I questioned their recommendations to save me money. Also when i filed the complaint on 6/2/12 i ask the rep if she was writing down my side of this story so they would know why i was not happy about all of this.. her answer, NO.What i had to say wasn't relevant to her peaceful afternoon now that i had called up and ruined any chance of a quiet spell I assume.
With all these considerations I formally request that Verizon restore the unlimited package to this line. THAT WOULD ONLY BE A FAIR SOLUTION SINCE I WAS RAILROADED OUT OF IT BY A DECEITFUL EMPLOYEE!
That said, I will be filing a complaint with the BBB and also posting this story wherever relevant around the world wide web.I'm an Honest person but don't cheat me out of what I have. when I'm right I know it. this is not right. please make it right.
I am saving a copy of this letter just in case there is an accident and this post is mistakenly deleted.  That way I can restore it so as to warn other customers  or even better, future customers to be aware that they to  may run into problems with their account if they take the friendly advise  of the representatives they are supposed  trust with their accounts!!

$310 a month for 3 lines? Wow. How the heck?

  • How do I query my complaint, waiting a week for an email update but no follow up

My partner received a cold call from Steven who offered a free upgrade to eFibre. She rightly asked what this free offer would cost and was reassured it was free because loyal customers were being offered this roll out at no cost. My partner reiterated several times to Steven that she was not the A/C holder but Steven was adamant this was not chnging the T&Cs. Guess what we went from 2 monthly bills to monthly and our charges have doubled. My partner lodged a complaint and was reassured by Karen that it would be dealt with in 10 - 15 working days. A call back was received from a blocked number and a child was given a reference no. My partner phoned back and Kevin on the help desk placed her on hold and when he came back he announced he was dealing with the issue - it was now resolved and again guess what there was no question to answer. So now, i want a transcript of the call recording as Kevin played party correct and defended his employer by blaming my partner and not the unsolicited caller who should have asked for the A/c Holder only. Kevin advised there was no reference to her not being the A/C holder on his screen. She asked for written confirmation that the issue was closed and was advised that an email had been sent. I need to escalate this under advice and need your email. This phonecall happened last thursday and of course no email has arriverd. I presume a full transcript will not be furnished and i cannot hold confidence looking at the complaints on your Forum but i formally request same in order to complete your complaints process.Regards,UoC - the A/C Holder

    Hi UoC
I have looked in to the notes of your complaint and I have found that this has been closed and your complaint has not been upheld.
Should you require a copy of a call you will need to submit this in writing to
    The Data protection manager
    Unit 6B
    1 Heuston South Quater
    St johns road
    Dublin
There is a charge for a copy of recording of €8.65 which will need to be included in the letter (cheque or postal order)

  • AT&T Amber Update Lumia 920

I was the first person in my state to have a white 920. It was the only one available according to the rep, to the dismay of everyone in line behind me. (I was first in line at the store ) I have been amazingly pleased with the updates, in both speed of release and quality. Up til now.
My girlfriend liked my phone so much that she bought the 928 when it came out for verizon. But she has received the Amber update. Its been about a month since she has updated her phone to Amber but according to AT&T, its still waiting for approval!!!
I understand that it is up to the carrier to release the update, but it is leading me to believe that either AT&T is dropping priority of Windows Phone or something isnt right with the update. They used to roll out updates almost immediately. I know i'm being impatient, but it is already early September, the latest that we were supposed to get the update. It is almost mid September.
What's the hold up? Is Nokia fixing issues that were causing problems on AT&T's network, or is the priority of WP slipping?

It is September 27,and AT&T still has not released the Amber update. This isn't news to anybody waiting for the update, but I want to state the facts. Nokia released a statement that all Lumia handsets would receive the update by September 30th, which gives big blue 3 more days to release the update before stated timeframe expires. It also give Nokia 3 days to address any possible issues with the update that might delay the release further. At this point, I continue to hold out hope that one or the other occurs.
However, if neither the update is released by AT&T, nor another public statement is issued by Nokia regarding delays by the 30th of September, you will start to see posts on every public forum and social media available slamming BOTH companies for not supporting their customers.
    These are the facts.
If anyone from Nokia or AT&T cares to respond, consider this a formal request.
    Sincerely,
A loyal customer and supporter of Nokia and Windows Phone since day one.

You probably have an un-terminated tag somewhere in your page. Commenting out the tag library line simply causes all your tags to be treated a text, this is not the solution.

  • Disappointed with product introduction

I am new to FrameMaker.  Based on its popularity and others' comments, I'm sure it is a fascinating, feature-packed program that can do a lot for me in my technical writing.  However, I am disappointed with Adobe's lack of introduction to the product.  Any product should come with material that tells me what is special about it and who is meant to use it.  It should also have sample work to show what can be done with the product.  Instead, Adobe begins with a Getting Started with FrameMaker that introduces the user interface and screen basics, which are not yet of concern at this introductory stage.  Note also that there is a section called "What's new in FrameMaker 9", clearly oriented to past users, but totally ignoring the need of new users to learn about the essence of FrameMaker.
I hope the folks at Adobe are listening and will provide some introductory material.  I would be most thankful for it.

I agree that it's hard to find good getting started training materials in the FrameMaker package that you buy. Some versions of FrameMaker were shipped with a training disk, or with training materials on the main disk. I'm not sure if recent versions do.
Recently some Adobe products have come with a 30-day free subscription to Lynda.com online training. Sometimes there's something in the package that tells you about these goodies, and other times you'll get email that tells you about them. You probably have to register your software at Adobe.com. You'll need to create an Adobe user account (free) if you don't have one. The adobe.com site isn't easy to find your way around. On the home page, type register in the search box at the top right, click Product Registration, and the registration log-in page appears. You can create an account if you need to.
Search Google for terms like "adobe.tv framemaker tutorial," "free online video training framemaker," and "framemaker training resources" without quotes for some good links. These searches include content from the official adobe.com site as well as others.
Forum participants are users who volunteer to help others in the community, as they've been helped - passing a torch. You're always welcome to post questions here. It's most helpful to would-be helpers if you state the subject of your question clearly, one question or problem per message thread. And, provide your exact version of FrameMaker; it's the version number (like 9.1) and the build number (pxxx) displayed with Help > About FrameMaker.
And, you can help others who struggle to find good introductory material in the package by posting a formal request at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform.

  • How do I control the order of files as written to the LST file of FileNameGet command with multiple files

The UseFileCommand is not loading my files in alphabetical order...nor in timestamp order...nor in the order I select them in the FileNameGet dialog box.
    How do I control this?
It appears that the LST file created is where the problem lies.  The UseFileList variable, it appears, reads from the last entry, and works forward.
So I need a way to manage this..so that my data is processed according to the timestamp (earliest first) OR filename (alphanumeric sort, ascending)
    Thanks

Hmm, seems I did a better search this morning...and came across the following....
    Previous sort request
    Maybe an enhancement?
In my case, the issue is I'm trying to process multtiple data files collected over 6 months of durability testing.  Out of the risk of losing data, our DAQ team has elected to open a new file every hour.  So, I end up with thousands of files.
I parse through these files, calculating time between various events.  Its CRITICAL that the calculations are in time-order.  The files each 1 Gb in size, so I prefer to utilize the filename (date/time sortable) or original timestamp.
If processed out of order, the durability data will likley imply something quite wierd (like improvement over time).  Of course, that would be great for a management review...but not so good when warranty starts coming back
I can write/copy any number of sort routines...I just thought the file order should be intuitive (either forward or reverse...not last, first, middle, etc...
Anyhow...I'd like to formally request an enhacement in the next ve.  rsion of Diadem; one that provides an additional parameter to be passed...SortField.  Useful options would include FileNameForward, FilenameReverse, TimeForward, TimeReverse, etc...

  • Apple do not want to cover a guarantee on the audio module failure I-Phone 4S

I subscribed to the AT&T phone service and got the I-phone 4S still under guarantee until May 10, 2013.
The problem started around December 09th, 2012 with:
    - the ringer started to generate a loud popping sound at every ring when there are incoming calls,
    - Later I discovered that the audio did not work for you-tube clips and Quicktime videoclips
    - The screen blacked out during phone conversations (it did not happen before) so I cannot type a note or check email during the calls.
    - During the phone conversation I cannot change the screen applications; as it is locked and blacked out.
I then brought the I-phone to the AT&T, who explained to me that the I-Phone technical problems must be handled by Apple, so I went to the Apple store in the South Center mall in Washington the same day, December 28th, 2012. The technician there told me to make an appointment.
On December 30th I went to the Apple store in Bellevue Square Washington, the first technician there told me that my I-Phone got “water damage”.  The second technician told me that it was not caused by water damage but there are too many issues going on at the same time, and possibly by resetting the I-Phone everything should be in order; to that all pictures and some of my data was lost during the reset process; but the problems remain and worsen:  My I-Phone intermittently shut itself down.
today Wednesday January 23, 2013 I return to the Apple store in Bellevue Square and meet with the technician Ian Cochran-Keith who diagnoses the issues; he mentions that my I-Phone connectors got “corroded” due to “water damage” and proposes to me two solutions:
    - The audio module needs repair and the cost is 59$ but the issue could come back or
    - Pay 199$ and get a new I-Phone.
(See attached note #3 from the technician)
I would like to present my formal request to Apple to honor the quarantee on my I-Phone and fix the issue of missing audio on videoclips also the screen black-out during phone conversation, beyond that the phone is working ok, I can still receive calls, make calls and other applications with Safari internet surfing .
I never have a problem with my I-Phone regarding any “water damage”.
What “Water Damage” the technician is reffering to?  Falling in water? Rain?
My phone was never exposed to rain or falling in any water or subject to any water contact since I got it, so what “water damage” the technician is referring to?
If there is water damage I am certain that it wouldn’t work at all, I would get nothing.
I do not agree to pay for the audio module change or to pay for a new I-Phone as it is still under guarantee.
I expect Apple to reply to me with a favorable answer and fix my I-Phone per the guarantee
    Sincerely
Note: This letter is copied to the www.bbbsilicon.org also to the consumer protection websites #43187808

I expect Apple to reply to me with a favorable answer and fix my I-Phone per the guarantee
They're not going to do it here. These boards are populated only with users, nobidy from Apple.

  • Trying this again as I'm getting no where with Adobe Support!!!

This should have been really simple. I have submitted this questions three times now as well as two separate support tickets, plus a call to Adobe support direct and basically no help at all!!!
I need to rename our premier partner site post a merger which resulted in a company name change. I have updated the Adobe ID with mixed results (some parts of the service reference the old name (e.g., Kuler) and certain support services now say that the email address is not associated with that service (really helpful when you need to actually get support).
I contacted Adobe support by phone only to be told that I needed to raise a ticket - not a problem more than happy to follow proper process! So I did that then I got a response which did not address the issue at all and basically said that if it was "TOTALLY NECESSARY" (well it's a business people we only bother with the "totally necesary" and you would think that trading under a different name with the partner site - which is meant to be used for marketing purposes (isn't that what you pay your $2000 for ??? - would be kinda necessary!!!! I mean really?).
Ok so moving, on I was informed that the case would be escalated to Level 2 technical support. Then I heared absolutely nothing for five days except an auto generated email saying the case was about to be closed as the period to provide more information had lapsed. Well I had added more information to the email several times so clearly the case was never escalated and the support staff have just put it in the to delete pile (confirmed by the fact that the case no longer appears in the active case list or the closed case list - I have the emails and the case number - so what happened to the original case??? .
So What happened Adobe / Business Catalyst - your support used to be world class. Now you're right up there with Lenovo after sales service (non existant)!
So being the persistent chap I am (plus this must be resolved otherwise the new CEO is going to go balistic) I will provide the information again in the hope that someone from support will do the right thing and address my technical problems (not to mention the serious issues with Adobe support services):
    Old site URL: veridicalconsulting.businesscatalyst.com
Old user email: (this is the origina ladmin user id that was used to request the move): [email protected]
The new Partner Name: (this is the new Partner Portal name we want our partner site moved to): DMS.Group or DMS Group or DMS-Group depending on any naming convention restrictions.
The new Partner URL: (the Partner's website address should be changed to): dms-group.businesscatalyst.com
The new Partner user email: [email protected] (since changing this email does not access the support website - error 4)
Permission to rename domain: Yes I formally request to have my partner site renamed per the details above
Previous Ticket number (which seems to have been ignored) 81737 and 82912 as I keep getting 5 day lapse notices even though I was informed that it would be escalated to level 2 technical support.
Could someone please do something about this as it's getting serious and we don't want the CEO getting involved (former barrister) and I don;t need the headache over what should be a relatively simple...ok this is what we are going to do....

    Hi Peter
Renaming for the websites in your partner portal are fine. You just need to consider repathing as you've mentioned. You can do a find and replace to sort that..
Remnaing for the Partner address I believe is a little more involved. It probably invoved Adobe Engineering. I think only Adobe could tell you how it affects the setup.  I believe you can't just rename the partner portal slug. Other things rely on it.
But I can suggest that this isn't really in the scope of what Adobe are obligated to support. A partner program is purchased, they don't claim that it's customisable. But since you're a partner, Im sure if you're nice about it, log a ticket and ask Support to escatlate it to ACCOUNTS, then Accounts will be able to help. If you just ask support they will give you a dumb response and close the ticket. So ask to have it escalated.
It'll mean that they may need to get engineering involved. Which takes the engineers away from developing BC.
But I wouldn't allude to Barristers. It'll get you nowhere and this is your bag, not adobes.
