A little bit of page numbering grief...advice welcome

I am a newbie to Mac. Mostly used Windows and LInux (Ubuntu) prior to this. This is a brand new MacBook (one week old) using a brand new iWork pages 08.
As a student, I do a LOT of papers that require that page number 1 start where the text is - usually after the title page and perhaps TOC. I have surfed this forum and tried a number of things that have been suggested to no avail, although admittedly, there were different bits of advice that I may have executed incorrectly.
I had a long Word document that I imported. Like others, I noted that the page numbers were not editable, so like the advice offered here I copied and pasted into a blank and resaved it with the intention of adding new page numbers in.
When I search Help for numbering, or insert pages, or pages - it mostly directs me to the pull down menu under 'insert' where I see "page number" (actually, I found that on my own without the help)
anyway, I have tried the suggestions elsewhere posted including inserting sections (and later removing them) , check and un-checking the "use previous headers', attempting to start pages number at 0 (no luck).. I managed to get # 1 inserted on page 2 (yay!!) , but then no automatic number after that.
I looked to the Insert menu to see if there was "Page NumberS" (plural, not singluar) and it appears to me that there is only insert one page number - because that is what happend to me - but no other pages after that..
As I am in a time crunch to submit this paper, I will try to insert page numbers individually for every page as a work around, but thought someone out there could educate me for future work (ack - my thesis! if this forum is correct, sounds like I have a steep learning curve about page numbers for chapters etc).
I am keen to learn about Mac, and hopefully I have made the right decision , but have to admit that when you are in a hurry to submit papers on time, re-learning what should be easy is a bit frustrating. Unfortunately I have already spent 2 hours trying to solve this tiny problem
My husband does not like Windows at all and convinced me to buy this machine. Certainly the toys (I photo, I tunes etc etc.) are fun, but ultimately I want this machine for work and school purposes only. I have in the last week spent a lot of time trying to learn how to use it. I hate to say it, but the software makes me feel kinda dumb...esp. for stuff (small) like inserting a page number. I have never had any training on Windows or Linux but they did seem rather more intuitive than Apple on this....

The page numbering goes with the section which derives from the template you used to create the page.
For example you would have a Preface section with certain +master objects+ that numbers with roman numerals.
Then you would have the body of the book following which restarts the count from 1 and uses Arabic numbers. This again would have its own +master objects+.
You need to insert the page numbers you want in the section's +master objects+ . Do this by going to +Menu > Format > Advanced > Make master objects editable+ .
The +master objects+ are what repeats on each page. What I think you have done is insert the page number only on the page you are looking at, which is why it has only inserted once.
I presume you will be inserting your page numbers in the Header or Footer which you will be able to see if you go to +Menu > View > Show Layout+ .
To control how the pages are numbered and with which number they start go to +Toolbar > Inspector (the blue icon with the i in it) > Layout (2nd tab) > Section+ and set what you want there.

    Hi, Tom.
FYI: You've not stated which of your listed Macs is having the problem. However, the following may help in any case:
    1. Did you install Front Row using the Front Row hack on a Mac that did not ship from the factory with Front Row installed? If so, See my "Uninstalling the Front Row hack" FAQ. This has been known to cause a variety of problems, including the menu bar (Clock, Spotlight) issues you noted.
    2. If you did not install the Front Row Hack, an incompatible or corrupted Startup or Login Item may be partly to blame for the problems with the menu bar. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    3. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.

  • I start scrolling a little bit and then the page uncontrollable scrolls down to the bottom of the page slowly. During which time firefix is unresponsive.

I will scroll down the page with either the keyboard, mouse or by click on the onscreen scroll bar and it will start uncontrolably scrolling to the bottom of the page. It also crashes a lot.

Dave is right. This can't really be automated (at least not in ID).
The last time I ran into a book like this I *thought* I could automate it by using running head variables and picking up an invisible autonumbered head in the text flow. I was disappointed to learn that variables don't "see" the autonumbers.
I ended up converting all my autonumbered section numbers to actual numbers. So at least they went into the running head automatically once. But if I had had to add or remove a section I would have had some typing to do.

  • Pages, Numbers, Keynote vs. Documents To Go

I'm in grad school and have to do a lot of papers as well as projects requiring Excel and/or PowerPoint. I try to work on course work when I have downtime at work. I just got the iPad 2 to replace my netbook that was stolen. I'm looking for recommendations or advice about productivity apps. My question is: which would be better in terms of functionality - Pages, Numbers, and Keynotes to work on my papers and projects, or Documents To Go Premium?  I realize that getting Pages, etc. would be twice the cost of Docs To Go, but I'm willing to spend a little more if they are better apps.

I purchased all 4 and, for me, the iLife suite wins hands down.  Documents to go only contains a bare minimum of office functionality (no way is it a substitute) and I ended up deleting it and buying iLife.  The problem you might have is interoperability in a PC environment.  iLife let's you save documents, spreadsheets and presentations as ms office files but the formatting isn't always perfect (although it works most of the time).  Also, if you don't want to mess about with syncing docs on and off you iPad through itunes then you'll need a cloud save service.  I use mobile me because I have an iMac, and that works fine, but the problem for a windows user is going to be that iLife doesn't integrate with dropbox, although there are workarounds such as gethabilis.

  • Page numbers in PDF?

I cannot figure out how to identify the page numbers of a PDF document when I view it in Safari 5.0.3. The original paper document has its own numbering system, but the PDF page-numbers are completely different. When I go to print individual pages of the PDF document, I don't know what page numbers to put into the printer window.
I asked the publisher of the PDF document for advice. This is what it advised:
"This is an issue with printing PDFs (Portable Document Files) in general, and does not pertain exclusively to printing PDFs in FDsys. When printing a PDF document in your web browser, the web browser is printing the pages of the electronic file (the PDF) not the page numbers that appear on the original publication (from which the PDF is derived). The page numbers of a PDF document do not always match the page numbers appearing on the publication itself. For example, in the example you cited (http://www.gpo.gov:80/fdsys/pkg/USCODE-2009-title26/pdf/USCODE-2009-title26-subt itleA.pdf), the page number on the publication is page 347. However, if you click anywhere in that page, you will see that the PDF reader you are using indicates the corresponding page in the PDF file in the toolbar at the top of the page (next to the up/down arrow icons). The page number indicated in the toolbar refers to the page numbers in the PDF file, and it is these page numbers that your browser is referring to during the printing process."
None of those instructions work in Safari. How do I find the page numbers for a PDF document in Safari?

    Hi Richard
the best bet is to open it in Preview using the relevant button that appears when you hover at the bottom of a pdf in safari. Although the page numbers that appear on each page still won't necessarily match, you can at least make preview show the 'pdf' numbers in the toolbar, which will match those you choose when printing.
a plugin like adobe's or http://schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/ may show page numbers within Safari, but that doesn't mean they'll match those which appear on the pages, in the example link you gave, and others.

  • Page navigation in Acrobat does not match page numbers in the document

I have a document in both Framemaker format (server.book) and PDF (server.pdf).  When I view the pdf file in Adobe Acrobat, the page numbers appear correctly on the document itself, but up in the Page Navigation window within Acrobat the pages number doesn't match.
In the beginning of the book I have Title page, a Table of Contents, and a Preface that all use lower-case roman numerals.  However, when viewing this document via Acrobat, the Title pages show up as i, and ii, but then the Table of Contents and Preface show up as pages 1 - 8 instead of iii - x in the page navigation window.
I can't figure where this discrepancy is originating.
    Please help.

Acrobat has no way to know which bit of character string on each page is the page number.
The visible page number has never formed any part of Reader nav. as you point out, it couldn't.
Acrobat knows the Numbering Properties of the pages as created in Frame. It just doesn't display or honor them consistently, depending on Reader version.
I also use i, ii, iii, iv for pre-narrative material. The romans are displayed in the page number box of Acroread (this is AR7 on Unix). I can enter "ii" in the box, and go to that page. But the Print dialog is Ordinal only. Printing page ranges in AR7 is always off by 2 or 4 relative to the actual page numbers.
Acrobat Pro 9 (9.4.5, Win7-64) seems to be more consistent, and does show and accept real page numbers for Print.

  • Page Numbers Not Appearing in Data Merge Document?

Hello, hopefully someone can help. I am pretty new to InDesign but learning a lot.  I am creating a member directory of about 200 pages (about 2800 records merged from .csv to InDesign 6). Everything is working fine with the merge, except generating the page numbers.  I tried adding page number at the bottom of the page to the master BEFORE merging. But if I do that, it greys out the "multiple records per page" option when trying to perform the Data Merge (using "Create merged Document").  So, I tried adding the page number to the A-master AFTER creating the merged document, but the page number is not appearing on any of the pages.  There must be a way to do this, can anyone help?
(FYI - to generate the auto page numbers, I am going to the Type-Insert Special Character-Markers-Current Page Number, and placing that within a text field at the bottom of the page.  Thanks in advance. )

Here is a screen shot.  I have placed it on the A-Master.  See Screenshot#1.  Screenshot #2 shows Page 70 with no page number (and no other pages have page numbers that I can see.  Thanks for your advice on fixing....
Sorry, here is screenshot #2, (with personal details redacted but the records are there behind the grey boxes):

Went to add the page number in a document and it does not insert the number or give a choice as to the format of that number.  anyone know a fix?

  • Document page numbers in pages palette?

I just jumped from CS to CS5. I work in magazine spreads most of the time and would like the pages palette to reflect my document page numbering. All I can get it to show is 1, 2, 3, etc. with 1 starting on the LEFT page of the thumbnail spread, whereas the my document spreads always start on EVEN-numbered (left) pages. I have no trouble numbering the document itself any way I want, it's just the palette. Was not a problem in CS, it always showed my document page numbers below the thumbs. Is there a menu setting I am not finding?

Can you post a screen capture of your Pages Panel (they officially became panels instead of palettes in CS4, or maybe CS3)? Use the little camera icon on the web screen to embed it in your post.
The only things that's changed significantly about the Pages Panel/Palette is the addition of page thumbnails, so if you aren't seeing page numbers that match the numbers assigned (if you are viewing section numbering rather than absolute numbering -- a preference choice), then there is something wrong with the program. The first step with oddities like this is to Replace Your Preferences

  • TS4213 Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?

Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?
Examples of what is going on:
    1. In Pages, Numbers & Keynote, when I go to the media browser the Audio section reads "Open iTunes to populate this list" even after iTunes has been opened, .xml file has been replaced/repaired, etc  AND Photo section reads "Open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list" even after iPhoto Library has been replaced and new default library created.
    2. In iMovie, similar thing ... when I go to add photos or music to a movie the iTunes files aren't present and the iPhoto photos are missing with similar messages as in #1.
    3. In iPhoto, similar thing ... when I go to add music to a slideshow it says to "Open iTunes to populate this list".
It is shocking to me that Apple would let something as simple as a pathway link to associated library files get this messed up on an upgrade, but what's even more surprising is that with the number of people who seem to be having this particular issue (and I can tell from all the research that I've done for weeks online that there are a lot of them) that there doesn't seem to be a single clear answer to fixing it anywhere on these community support forums.  Most of what I've seen is rehashed advice from outdated issues.  What I need is a simple answer to how do we get these programs to look for the correct location of the photo and music files because I sure can't seem to find any logical place to do that through the programs' preferences files or the system preferences window?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    P.S. Here's the details on the software/hardware:
    MacBook Pro
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.7.5
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    iTunes 11.0.4 (4)
    iPhoto '11 9.4.3 (720.91)
    iMovie '11 9.0.9 (1795)
    Keynote '09 5.3 (1170)
    Pages '09 4.3 (1048)
    Numbers '09 2.3 (554)

I have the same problem on a new MacBook Pro. I have not been able to access the iTunes library from iPhoto since I got this computer. I looked in the Preferences file and deleted the com.apple.iApps.plist but there was no com.apple.iApps.lockfile so I just deleted the iAPPs.plist and rebooted the computer.  Still no iTunes available in iPhoto.
All my music is in iTunes and plays. After reading the above I brought up Pages and I was able to access music and insert a track into a document.
    Do you have any suggestions.

  • All I hear when I make calls is little bits of static (most of the time)

So this started happening about a month ago when I moved to NJ (though I upgraded from iOS 5.1.1 to 7 at the same time - so I don't know if that's connected to this issue).  I place a call and the timer starts going, but I can't hear anything except a little bit of intermittent static every now and then.  Maybe the static is when the person says hello - I don't know.  It's indiscernible as speech and is very soft.
Placing calls works sometimes, but I just tried about 4 or 5 times this morning to place calls to 2 different numbers (including Sprint's '*2' service number) and I let each call go for at least 20 seconds before giving up.  I never even hear the ring.  I've gotten so used to it not working, I stopped waiting for a minute before giving up.  Sometimes calling out works... and I suspect that there may be a pattern to it.  My current theory is that placing calls starts to work each morning AFTER I've received a call.  Receiving calls has always worked - never couldn't hear anyone when they've called me.
I have tried turning the phone off and back on - no luck.  I reprogrammed the phone via the help of a Sprint representative - no luck.  After reprogramming the phone, they had me call an 888 number, and that worked - I could hear it ring, but when I tried calling the guy I'd been trying to reach this morning on his land line - no luck.  It then worked when I tried calling my parents' landline (which is the number I'm calling when I usually experience this problem).  Then I received a call back from my parents about my hang-up, and then I tried the same guy again, and this time it worked.
What the heck is going on?  Is it my phone?  Is it the towers?  Is it Sprint?  What's causing all these calls where I can't hear anything?  I have not asked if the people I've called could hear me when the problem is occurring.
    Thanks,
    Rob

    I fixed it.
    Thanks

  • Using iWork 09 Pages I need the first six pages of a document to not be counted as page numbers. I need the seventh page to be numbered as page one. I already know to have a section break between pages 6 and 7 and to use inspector "start at." Not working

In the book I'm formatting, the first page is the title page, the second page is the copyright page, the third through fifth pages are the table of contents, the sixth page is blank, then the text (which I want to number as page one) is the introduction. I have section breaks between the title page, the copyright page, the table of contents, and the introduction. Using the Inspector, Layout, Section, and selecting "Start at" 7 doesn't do anything!

Is is a bit tricky, but it works. On your 6th page (the blank one) go to Insert > Section Break. This will give you a 7th page. Then go to Inspector (blue circle with a white letter i in it) and go to Layout Inspector (2nd tab). Once in thee, go to Section. Check "Start at" and enter the number 1. Then ensure all other toons I there are unchecked.
Then go to Insert, and select Auto Page Numbers. You will find that your 7th page is numbered 1 as you want, but the first six pages will be numbered 1 to 6, which you don't want. But you can then delete the page numbering in that 1st section, leaving your 2nd section, beginning at page 7, numbered as page 1. You'll need to play around a bit as I did, and I would suggest using a test document to play with so you can undo any unwanted actions etc, but with tweaking around, it's doable. This took me ages to sort, so if it works for you, please give me the points :-)

  • I can't get the page numbers in my table of contents to update when I update the book.

I'm using Framemaker 11 and I have two TOCs in my book: one in English and one in French. Each TOC links to different documents in the same book. The reference page for each TOC is set and correctly displays the heading 1 and 2 I've told it to display, but the numbers do not update when the content in my document files changes to a different page. I've checked the conditional text settings in my document files; they are correct. When I update the book, I choose to update Numbering, All Cross-References, All Text Insets, OLE Links, Generate Table of Contents, Lists, and Indexes. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

I just tested this out and saw the same result as Rick - a book with child books ignores all generated files within the child books. This applies to adding content from them (e.g. their titles) to actually including them in the output. This applies to all versions of FM since v.9!
However, there is a workaround for this. You need to use the hierarchical book structure in the parent book and create Folders for each book that you want to add. Then manually add the generated files (TOC, IX, List of..., etc.) and book to the respective folder. This is what it looks like for two child books in a parent book:
Note that the child book generated files (TOC, IOR) show as just regular files at this point in the parent book. To get the page numbering to be continuous throughout the parent book, you will need to make a couple of passes. First set folder, files and books to have the Numbering continue from the previous (if you want all sequential page numbers). This will set the page numbers correctly except for what they were in the respective book TOCs. You will need to use the starting page number of the child TOC files in each folder (it shows in the Book status bar when click on the TOC file in the master/parent book).
To set the individual book TOCs to be correct in the parent book, open the child book and set the TOC Numbering to start at the page stated in the parent book (status bar). Now update the child book to set the correct (parent book) page numbers in the child TOC. [This is a necessary manual step, as the page number assigned in the parent book is ignored when th child book is individually updated and FM uses 1 to start off the sequence in the child book.]  Repeat for each child book in the master/parent book.
The final step is to Update the parent book and create the PDF. You should now have all of the files included in the PDF and the child TOCs should show the correct page numbers of the master book.
This whole process of books within books seems a bit borked and one shouldn't have to be jumping through hoops to include child generated files. Please report this as a bug via: https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm
