A question from my text

In my text there's a self-test question that looks easy but I couldn't figure out., as follows. Note that every detail exactly appers in the text. The question asks what output is produced. The answer is "Positive." Why?
int number = 7;
boolean isPositive = (number>0);
if (number>0);
number = -100;
if (isPositive)
System.out.println("Positive.");
else
System.out.println("Not positive.");

In my text there's a self-test question that looks
easy but I couldn't figure out., as follows. Note
that every detail exactly appers in the text. The
question asks what output is produced. The answer is
"Positive." Why?
int number = 7;
boolean isPositive = (number>0);
if (number>0);
number = -100;
if (isPositive)
System.out.println("Positive.");
else
System.out.println("Not positive.");Why? Here's why,
int number = 7;1.) You declare a variable (A variable is a named placeholder for storing information during program execution) that can hold an int value and you assign literal 7 to it. "number" is our identifier here. (An identifier is a name given to a specific variable).
boolean isPositive = number > 0;2.) You test if identifier number is greater than to 0 (which is logically wrong because a positive number is greater than or equal to 0) and assigned the boolean value to a variable named "isPositive". Now what will be the value of isPositive? is 7 greater than or equal to 0? Of course true. (remember that after evaluating the expression 7 >= 0, the isPositive now holds a true value okay? And you are also wondering why 7 >= 0 is evaluated first before the assignment, thats because assignment operator in Java is right associative, remember?
PUC3A (Prefix, Unary, Creational, Conditional, Cast, Assignment) operator are all right associative meaning they are evaluated from right to left, okay? Review your Java Operator Precendence and Associativity). I remove the () operator because it isnt necessary because >= operator has a higher precendence than = operator. Okie!
if (number>0) ;3.) Now, a single selection stucture (A single selection structure is used to select or ignore an action) "if" tests if identifier number is greater than 0 (as I said logic error, this should be >=) which is evaluated to true because 7 is greater than or equal to 0, but it follows an empty statement ";" see? So nothing is executed. I think you just mistype and what you really want is to change the value of identifier number to -100 if that identifier number is positive, Am I right?
number = -100;4.) You change the value of identifer number to -100, from 7 to -100. Does this statement change the value of our identifier isPositive? Definitely NO!
if (isPositive) // #snif
        System.out.println("Positive.");5.) This statement tests isPositive and what is the value of identifier isPositive again? The value is true right? Then what happen is it prints "Positive".
else
         System.out.println("Not positive.");6.) This statement will only execute if expression (see #snif) evaluates to false.
By the way
if(expression)
        statement;
else
        statement;is double selection structure because it selects between two courses of action. Thats why. Okay? Am I clear? Am I right? ^_^ Thank you.

  • HOW TO WRITE AND READ FROM A TEXT FILE???

    How can I read from a text file and then display the contents in a JTextArea??????
    Also how can I write the contents of a JTextArea to a text file.
    Extra Question::::::: Is it possible to write records to a text file. If you have not idea what I am talking about then ignore it.
    Manny thanks,
    your help is much appreciated though you don't know it!

    Do 3 things.
    -- Look through the API at the java.io package.
    -- Search previous posts for "read write from text file"
    -- Search java.sun.com for information on the java.io package.
    That should clear just about everything up. If you have more specific problems, feel free to come back and post them.

  • Reading in integers from a text file

    Hi, I am going to go for the 'reading in from a text file' action as I haven't done this before. So I have been looking at all the examples and am trying the one out below :) My question is that though the structure seems pretty straightforward, what is the action of the 'token' and why doesn't java recognise it as it is used in many different examples that I have seen?
    public static int[] getIntegersFromFile(String fileName) throws IOException {
                   StringWriter writer = new StringWriter();
                   BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(fileName));
                   List<Integer> list = new ArrayList<Integer>();
                   for (String line = reader.readLine(); line != null; line = reader.readLine()) {
                   writer.write(line + " ");
                   StringTokenizer tokens = new StringTokenizer(writertoString());
                   while (tokens.hasMoreTokens()) {
                        String str = tokens.nextToken();
                        try {
                             list.add(new Integer(str));
                             } catch (NumberFormatException e) {
                                  System.out.println("Error '" + str + "' is not an integer.");
                   int[] array = new int[list.size()];
                        for( int i = 0; i < array.length; i++){
                        array[i] = list.get(i);
                   return array;
         }

    Hey, first of all, a piece of advice, try formatting your codes you make easier
    to understand for the people who help you. You can check out the
    formatting tips
    Now, A think that could help you a lot, is the next link, seek out the
    documentation for the StringTokenizer class
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/
    Here your code formated and later my interpretation of your question.
    public static int[] getIntegersFromFile(String fileName) throws IOException {
       StringWriter writer = new StringWriter();
       BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(fileName));
       List<Integer> list = new ArrayList<Integer>();
       for (String line = reader.readLine(); line != null; line = reader.readLine()) {
          writer.write(line + " ");
       StringTokenizer tokens = new StringTokenizer(writertoString());
       while (tokens.hasMoreTokens()) {
          String str = tokens.nextToken();
          try {
             list.add(new Integer(str));
          } catch (NumberFormatException e) {
             System.out.println("Error '" + str + "' is not an integer.");
       int[] array = new int[list.size()];
       for( int i = 0; i < array.length; i++){
          array = list.get(i);
       return array;
    }StringTokenizer separates the string contained by the space character, and
    each piece of the separated string is stored into the token.
    Further on, could you extend your question about "why doesn't Java
    recognize what?" please, because I don't know if you have a problem
    iterating or is just that it doesn't compile or what.
    Expecting your answer, to complete mine, cya around.

  • How to save input from a text file in to array

    I got this assignment, and almost have no clue, and my teacher doesn't even teaches us anything
    This is what i am suppose to do
    5. The program must store the following data about each student in this Talent Show:
    * The student's name (store as a String)
    * The student's average time score [only for the events they competed in] (store as a Double)
    Note: Some of the data comes directly from the text file, and some of the data must be calculated from the data that is read from the file.
    6. The program must search through all of the student's scores to find the student who has the minumum average time of all students.
    7. You must calculate how many events each student played. Zero values are not counted.
    8. You must then generate a report on the screen that prints out
    * the total number of students in the competition,
    * the winning student's ...
    o name
    o times
    o average time (rounded to one decimal places)

  • Filling an object ArrayList from a text file

    Hi all,
    I am developing a project (for university) which has a class named "SupplierAgent", which is required to keep database of custom objects of type "InventoryItem". Basically these consist of a String (for the name of the item), an int representing the quantity on hand, and an int representing the unit price (in cents). I wish to have this inventory loaded from a text file rather than a binary file - that way the user can add new items to the file before loading the agent.
    I have included the code below, which works provided the file is rigidly structured. The main problem is the user having to type the path to the file: I cannot guarantee the user will have the file in any folder, and so the user is required to type in the absolute path. Is there any way to make this less annoying? Or is there a better way of loading a preset inventory while allowing the user to edit that inventory at will?
    I have included the current code below. it's not exactly in accordance with coding standards, because we are using the JADE agent architecture (hence why the method is called "action") rather than something more informative.
    I should also mention that it uses a command line interface. The "io" class basically includes a scanner and the System.out.println method. Its "yesOrNo()" method is for convenience: it asks the user a question and allows them to select y or n.
    public void action() {
                boolean loadFromFile = io.yesOrNo("Would you like to load the inventory from a file?");
                if(loadFromFile) {
                    BufferedReader br = null;
                    boolean fileFound = false;
                    while(!fileFound) {
                        io.output("Please enter the absolute path to the file, including filename extension:  ");
                        inventoryFile = io.input();
                        try {
                            FileReader fr = new FileReader(inventoryFile);
                            br = new BufferedReader(fr);
                            fileFound = true;
                        catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
                            io.output("File not found.  ");
                    String fileLine = null;
                    int lineNumber = 1;
                    InventoryItem item = null;
                    try {
                        while((fileLine = br.readLine()) != null) {
                            switch((lineNumber % 4)) {
                            case 1: item = new InventoryItem();
                                    item.setName(fileLine); break;
                            case 2: item.setQuantity(Integer.parseInt(fileLine));
                            case 3: item.setPrice(Integer.parseInt(fileLine));
                            case 0: inventory.add(item);
                        io.output("Inventory loaded successfully\n");
                    catch(Exception e) {
                        io.output("Error at line " + lineNumber + " of inventory file\n");
                        io.output("Unable to fill inventory.  Please ensure file is structured correctly\n");
                        io.output("See readme for explanation of file structure requirements\n");

  • How to get information from a text editor in the SAP standard transactions

    Hi SAP gurus I have a requirement in which it is required to gte the information from a text editor(which is not a field) in mm02 (click on) goto Purchase Order Text  in this view there is a text editor there is some text  in te the text editor i have to get that information in a table can it be done if so please give example and steps
    Points will be given to useful information

    Ah yes, excellent question, and not really a clear cut answer. In my experience, the easiest way to find this information is to simply create the text using the standard transaction, in this case MM02.  Then go to transaction SE16, using table STXH, do a query on this table, entering your user name, and today's date as the creation date.  The results should show the text that you just created, now you can see the object, id, and the way the name is being used here.
    I also understand that in some cases, there is a button next to the editor in the screen which gives you some idea of these values, but this is not implemented everywhere, and I believe that I've only seen this in one place, can't remember where, but the first solution above will always work for you.

  • How to do import data from the text file into the mathscript window?

    Could anyone tell me how to do import data from text file into mathscript window for labview 8?
    MathScript Window openned, File, Load Data - it has options: custom pattern (*.mlv) or all files.
    Thanks

    Hi Milan,
    Prior to loading data in Mathscript Window , you have to save the data from the Mathscript window (the default extension of the file is .mlv but you can choose any extension). This means that you cannot load data from a text file  that was not created using the Mathscript window.
    Please let me know if you have any further questions regarding this issue.

    Hi,
    see my other answer here:
    SQL command editor doesn't take more than 1 insert command

    hi jos,
    we have been asked not to use a parser for this assignment. evil
    tutor i think! lolYour example seems to imply that all the <tag> ... </tag> pairs have
    to occur on a single line; if that is so, you can do some cheap
    programming like this:String getText(String line, String tag) {
       int start= line.indexOf("<"+tag+">");
       int end= line.indexOf("</"+tag+">", start);
       if (start < 0 || end < 0) return null; // no <tag> ... </tag> pair found
       // return the text in between the <tag> ... </tag> tags
       return line.substring(start+tag.length()+2, end);
    }kind regards,
    Jos

    How to load such values in columns of database using SQL Loader?
    Please guide. Try something like
    someDate    DATE 'DDMMYYYY'
    someNumber1      "TO_NUMBER ('s99999999.00')"
    someNumber2      "TO_NUMBER ('99999999.00s')"Good luck,

  • Reading text from a text file(what else!!!!!)

    okay to save time here i've managed to read the text from the text file and display in the console
    my question is - is there a way to read the text a character at a time, at present i read it as a string, the reason i need a character is that i have to check each character to check for brackets ({[ and [})
    public void loadFile() {
              JFileChooser fLoad = new JFileChooser();
    fLoad.setFileSelectionMode(JFileChooser.FILES_ONLY);
    int result = fLoad.showOpenDialog(this);
    File file = fLoad.getSelectedFile();
    if(file == null) return;//if no file selected return
              String text = new String();
    try //exception handler
    BufferedReader input;
         input = new BufferedReader(
         new InputStreamReader(
         new FileInputStream(file)));
    while((text = input.readLine()) != null)                                                   //print it out, line by line
                   char array[] = text.toCharArray();
                   checkFile(array);
                   System.out.println(text);//test case
    input.close();//close file
    as listed i have attempted to fill a char array with the characters from the string but when i try to access the array with
    public void checkFile(char array[]) {
         for(int i=0; i<array.length;i++) {
         if(array.equals("(")) System.out.println("(");//doesn't work
                   System.out.println(array[i]);//works
    the if loop gives me an error
    C:\Documents and Settings\korbitz\Desktop\bracket\Bracket.java:168: char cannot be dereferenced
    any help will be appreciated

    if(array.equals("(")) System.out.println("(");//doesn't workinstead try
    if(array.equals("(")) System.out.println("(");
    You could also try the String methods myString.indexOf() (but you'd have to do one for each char you're looking for)
    A better alternative might be using a StringTokenizer
    StringTokenizer stk = new StringTokenizer(myString, "({[]})");
    if(stk.countTokens()!=1)
    // then you must have a bracket/brace dividing your string
    }Good luck,

    Hi,
    The below code shows how to read from txt file and display in the perticular fields.
    Why have you used waveform?

    There are so many things wrong with this VI, I'm not even sure where to start.
    Hard-coding paths that point to your user folder on the block diagram. What if somebody else tries to run it? They'll get an error. What if somebody tries to run this on Windows 7? They'll get an error. What if somebody tries to run this on a Mac or Linux? They'll get an error.
    Not using Read From Spreadsheet File.
    Use of local variables to populate an array.
    Cannot insert values into an empty array.
    What if there's a line missing from the text file? Now your data will not line up. Your case structure does handle this.
    Also, how does this answer the poster's question?

    Here to help shed some additional light on this case, jdondr. I also own a Maxx. With your phone, if you access the Gallery, there should be a folder named: Messaging.  If you look at the upper left hand corner, you should see a drop down box. Is it currently set to Albums?
