A single fast connection blocks almost all other network activities

Hi!
If I have a single fast up/download (or enough smaller/slower ones), it is able blocks almost all other network activities:
Torrent without up/down limit => everything else is "timing out" (or something. P.e. load a single page in firefox or ping my router - doing nothing).
Pacman is fetching a package from a fast server => the same.
Pages in firefox don't load if I just stop the fast traffic - it keeps doing nothing until I hit [reload].
Tested a few other network applications (java stuff, wget, curl, whatever pacman uses), it all looks the same.
This hasn't been like this up until a while ago (1-2 weeks?)... during that time, I changed nothing in the whole network except for
1) the arch updates (normal mirrors, no testing)
2) added a debian machine to the network (problem persists if I shut it down though)
Now I don't know where to start searching. Any hints?
Thanks!

As I understand things you are saying one fast connection is blocking out all other connections right?
If so we need some more information.
1. Your basic setup, like are you using a cable modem and what router. wireless?
2. The result of speed tests on your connection both upload and download (e.g. testmy.net)
3. What is the "one" fast connection and how much bandwidth is it taking (bittorrent?)
One thing to look for is that certain routers cannot handle many connections.  A few of my old WRT54G routers with stock firmware could only handle 200 connections or so before crashing.  So now I use dd-wrt on a WRT54GL.
Some more info on what might be happening:
1. The torrent client is using all the connections so the router cannot handle more connections.
2. The torrent client is taking all the upload bandwidth so the behaviour you describe occurs.
3. The torrent client is taking up all the download bandwidth.
[less likely]
4. Some complex ISP shaping and/or bandwidth limiting?
5. Malfunctioning network hardware locally (i.e. router, NIC, etc.)
6. Wireless router encountering interference thus limiting bandwidth severely?
Some Possible solutions (assuming the common stuff is the case):
1. Get a Better router/firmware.
2. Configure the torrent client to limit connections/upload/download.
3. Setup complex limiting on the local box using iptables.
4. Ties in with #1.  Configure router to implement QoS and/or bandwidth limiting based on Application layer protocol/port/Ip address/mac etc. dfepending on situation.

  • Unable to connect with server, all other apps OK, have disabled firewall.

Wi-Fi issue?  Are you in a home or business environment? Have you tried connecting and re-connecting to your wi-fi network?

  • Deskjet 5850 - Windows 7 Dell laptop can't ping but all other networked machines can

So we have a 4-year-old Deskjet 5850 connected wirelessly to the home network. We've had a problem that it periodically disconnects from the wifi and won't reconnect until it's rebooted; however I've lived with this up to now (after much playing with settings, I might add).
Now my wife's new Dell laptop (insurance, old laptop, cup of tea, long story) has Windows 7, which doesn't have the HP full-feature software.  I figured the best thing to do was to try to add the printer manually, forcing the driver to 5600 series as per the HP support website; however I got absolutely nowhere.
A little digging showed me that the laptop simply can't see the printer - it won't even ping it. Every other machine on the network (there are 3 others if you count the networked tivo!) can ping the printer, the laptop can ping all the other machines, but it won't ping the printer.
I tried disabling windows firewall, it made no difference. I tried leaving the home group as recommended in various forums but again, no difference (can't see it making a difference anyway, since none of the other machines is in the group and it should still ping the printer anyway, no?).
There can't be any wifi b/g separation set up in the router because my laptop and TiVo are both running G and can ping the printer no problem.
I've given up scratching my head on this one and have reached the head/wall stage.
The printer is set up as static IP 10.0.0.10, DHCP range starts at 10.0.0.100 so no chance of any conflict. The laptop has picked up DHCP IP correctly (10.0.0.169, fwiw) with the right netmask.
I should maybe mention that I've a degree in computer science and 15 years IT industry experience; I know what I'm doing with this stuff, so it's nothing blindingly obvious... but this one has me completely stumped.
Oh, if anyone has a fix for the printer disappearing off the net, that would be cool too
    Help!

For what it's worth, it turned out to be (I think) a combination of router/printer settings.
The printer's idle timeout had ended up set to 0, unsure how (possibly when I first set it up I misunderstood the meaning and thought "well I don't ever want it to timeout"); now I'd already changed this back to the default last week when I was first trying to connect the Windows 7 machine but it made no difference; however I hadn't rebooted the router since.
The clue for me was that in the router setup (a Be-branded Thomson 565v7)  the printer came up as "inactive" in the list of devices. Rebooting the router after changing the idle timeout seems to have done the trick - the printer both appears on the net for the Windows 7 machine and stays connected to the wifi.
I still don't understand how the router can have got itself into that state where it will pass some traffic and not others. Perhaps the machines that could ping the printer were the ones that were connected to the net when the router first saw the printer and therefore had seen the arp update.
Maybe if I'd tried harder to force the entry in the arp table on the win7 machine I might be able to answer that; it came up and moaned that I wasn't allowed to do it, even though I was running in a "run as administrator" cmd window, and I gave up (since I figured the arp was getting out there if the other machines could see it).
Anyway, the answer was (at least in my case), check the idle timeout and reboot your router
    Thanks again for your post

  • Trouble connecting to internet via other networks

When away from home, my MacBook Air sometimes will not connect to the Internet, even though I am connected to the host's wireless network. In Network preferences, the status says, "AirPort is connected to [name of host network] and has the IP address [xxx.xxx.x.xxx]." However, Safari will timeout with a network not available message. So I am connected to a host router, but not the Internet. This only happens outside my house, never at home.
Before, during and after I connect to the outside router, I will get pop-up warnings (source unknown) that tell me my (specifically named) AirPort Extreme cannot be found. I don't know whether the OS, or some application, is responsible for this, nor why it isn't apparent to (whatever originates the warning) that I am connected to another wireless router/network. I don't know if this indicates a symptom or a cause, however.
This problem is intermittent, and is not confined to any particular outside network; it happens on networks I've never used before, and on networks I've used successfully in the past. I have perused the Console, but frankly I don't know what to look for. Using Network Diagnostics from Safari leads to a dead end. The only thing that ever helps me get connected, when this happens, is to use "Assist me" in Network preferences. What it does or how it does it is a mystery to me. This is why I'm here.
    My question:
Rather than ask anyone to guide me to specific solutions (given that I have not gathered enough specific information), I would like to know what things I should look for and take note of when this happens, either generally or specifically. This way, I will be able to offer more specific information if or when this happens again. Anything you can advise me to put on my checklist to help diagnose this in the future will be much appreciated. Since I cannot reproduce the problem at will, tuning my radar seems like the best approach for now. Thanks in advance.

If you want to analyze the problem, the first place I'd check is under the Advanced button of the Network panel of System Preferences.  Select the DNS tab and see if what you see for "DNS Servers".
On the other hand, it might help to reset the connection settings on your Mac using these steps one at a time until the problem is resolved, recognizing that, depending on your problem, not all of these steps will make sense:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) Try to select your Wi-Fi network from the AirPort menu.
    3) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    4) In the same panel as (3), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    5) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".
    6) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( _not_ <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
These steps may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try.  Before you try these, if you have any special network settings on your Mac for things like DSL credentials, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them.  If you got all the way to the last step, if things don't work any worse than before, you can trash the saved SystemConfiguration folder.

  • The airport only finds other networks than the home network I have used before.  Doesn' help to try to manually add/find this network, it simply doesn't come up.  All other networks in the neighborhood are found though. Doesn't help to reboot either

The airport only finds other networks.  Not the home network which I have used before.
It doesn't help to search for new networks, try to manually search or add the network.  Doesn't
help to turn off/on the airport or even the mac.  Doesn't help to reboot the home network - which is
found and connected on the iPhone and iPad. (and network speed is good enough for many devices).
The network just doesn't come up on the list of available networks.
No chance to update software, since got no internet.

I did some googling and found alot of topics from you on this issue, to me it simply seems like on of the connectors is broken or loose.

  • I have brought an Apple iphone 4 from Apple store Arndale house for use any network, but this phone is locked with vodafone. Please suggest, how to unlock this phone to use all other network in other country?

    Dear Team,
i had brought a APPLE IPHONE4 from APPLE STORE, MANCHESTER ARNDALE. new cannon street mall.
when i was visiting for purchasing this device the sales team told me that the phone is unlocked and can use all around the world with any other network when i'm trying to use it other network it showed that NO SERVICE(at network issue) and then i made a call 2 apple customer support so the executive told me that this device has been locked with VODAFONE UK network. this was the FAKE commitment of sales team also its a CHEATING i must say that.
i'm very much disapointed and dissatiesfied with the APPLE STORE sales team...
kindely look toward and give me solution.
    thanks,
    regard,

I had read that thanks but many happy owners of locked iPhones
claim to have bought from an Apple store they do not actually mean
    Apple Retail
Arndale Centre is one of the largest Malls in Europe and every vendor of iPhones is there
Apple retail in UK ONLY sell unlocked iPhones unless you opt for a contract at a reduced price
not something you can do accidently as in sim free in US
    But thanks for you guidance

  • Macbook air not detecting home wifi but detecting all other networks in vicinity. Other devices are able to connect to home network.

I have had this problem since yesterday. My macbook air is not detecting the home wifi network it used to be connected to. A manual addition of the network is also not working. I also tried using network utility which gives the details of all networks available and their details, but the home network does not feature there.
However, my iPhone is able to connect to the home wifi without a glitch. I am right now using a mobile data card to access internet, but need to get back to the home network.
I found various users posting the same problem online, but am yet to find a conclusive problem. Here are two threads on apple support which are similar to my case.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2445976?threadID=2445976
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/10695921?messageID=10695921&start=1#106959 21?messageID=10695921&start=1
    Please help!

It was not working for me either and I spent a day looking at things other people did when they had similar problems. Never could find a conclusive response and what has been suggested here was always almost the only thing mentioned. I wish you luck and hopefully someone can actually point out the one true thing that is doing this!
This is the exact sequence of events: I switched off the main supply to the house when I was going out, and when I came back this problem occurred. I was searching desperately online and just when I had given up, I decided to switch mains off and then back on. It picked up the wifi, and has been working since. This was a shocker and mostly a coincidence. Wont hurt to try.

No bad form to worry about, just the reduced attention to your problem that a solved designation causes.
If I remove my gmail account, I'll be able to get all the emails back when I create my new one - because it's imap?
    Yes, but check 2 things,
    1. That it is setup as Imap (POP is possible but is not the default) and 2 that you have not created any local folders that house mail from the Imap account, if you did then you must export them before removing the account.
What do you mean by verify both passwords? You mean imap and smtp?
I assume I should be using the application specific password in my mail settings?
    Thanks,
    Bob
Imap and SMTP should be the same, but check.

I have tried everything I can think of. I reset my phone, I reset my router. As far as I know nothing has changed but I think I did recently update my Iphone. Now what do I do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    It used to connect and work fine, now i get nothing.

Reboot the router. Just unplug it for a few seconds. No settings get lost.

  • 5C will no longer connect to my home network, but all other devices do.

We had a service interuption and lost the wifi network at home for a while. When the network came back my 5C will no longer connect to the network, even though all of the other devices will. It will connect to wifi on other networks. I reset the router first. On my phone I have updated to the latest IOS, shut the phone off, forgotten the network, reset the network settings and reset the phone settings. Still will not connect to the network. It acts like it is trying but never makes it. I do not recieve an error message of any sort. What is the next step?

    Good day Telbuoy,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iPhone 5s is not connecting to your home Wi-Fi network. You've done a good job of isolating this behavior to your iPhone and home Wi-Fi router.
There are a few more steps that I'd suggest trying next:
Make sure your iPhone is updated to the latest iOS version using the steps in Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
Make sure your router is using the settings in Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.
Update your Wi-Fi router with the latest firmware and make sure the router supports your Apple product. For more information, contact the manufacturer of your router. (from If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network)
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy
