A transparent overlay for a video?

I am going to be creating videos for multiple versions of the same math problems.  There will be 5 versions of each problem.  So the 5 slides would be identical, except for numbers changing from one to the next.  Can I create a video overlay that will be transparent (so you can see the slide behind), where I can highlight words and write things and use the same overlay to create videos for each of the versions?
I hope my question makes sense.

I have Adobe Captivate 7.  I have a screenshot below.
I have used Word mail merge to create problem statements and solutions.  My Excel data source has formulas so that I can generate any number of problems and their solutions by setting up formulas in the spreadsheet.  Below are two versions of the same problem.  Each solution is broken up into sections/parts. Each section/part will be a background slide (or what I want to overlay - I'll explain, below).
So, for the problem Subtracting Mixed Numbers, below, the first step is to find the Least Common Denominator for the fractions.  The second step is to rename the fractions with the LCD.  The third step is to see if the fraction being subtracted is larger than the fraction being subtracted from.  If it is, then we have to borrow from the whole number and create a larger fraction.
I plan to do a couple of things with these slides.  Suppose the problem on the left is the "primary" problem.  I would like to do separate videos for each slide/step in the primary problem.  I make videos where I highlight the text as it is read, and point to numbers, etc.  Because the problems have identical layouts, due to the mail merge, the video portion, highlighting/circling/pointing would be identical for each of the other versions of the problem.  All that would need to change would be the audio.
I don't want to confuse you, but what I would like to do is have the student watch my primary video (left-side) problem, step 1 (finding the LCD which is 20 in the first problem), and then the slide for the second (right hand side) problem would be the one they work in.  Their Step 1 would be finding the LCD for their version.  The LCD for theirs is 24.  I would have a text entry box for them to enter 24.  If they get it wrong, the video for their step two would play, where the highlighting/circling/pointing is displayed with a new audio for their numbers.
For the different versions of the problem, the student would try to work each step, after watching me work my step.  Their first exposure to their step is the comparable slide for their step, with a text entry box.  An incorrect answer plays the video and audio showing how to solve their step.  They can then try another version of the problem and try inputting the answer for that, - incorrect would pull the video for that one.
I haven't quite figured out what is best as to the number of tries the student should get, but using a single highlighting/circling/pointing video overlaying their slide should save the time of having to do that part over and over.  New audio would need to be made for each version, though.
Does what I have said make sense?  Thank you!

  • Rendering transparent background for website video

I have a comp for a website that I'm doing.
I have a transparent background and some fading in WHITE text with a light ray animated behind it.
I have followed instructions on how to render with the transparency intact (Quicktime, PNG, RGB+Alpha, Millions of Colors+).  When I render it out and watch it in Quicktime, the light ray isn't correct and there's no transparency.  Same thing with Final Cut Pro.
When I bring the footage back into AE, the transparency is there so I'm assuming that the transparency is there but QT & FC just don't play transparency files.
I need the transparency bc I want the text to reveal over a background picture I have in my webpage design.
Is there anyway to get this done right?  I need the file to NOT be 300+ megabytes and when I drag the clip into COMPRESSOR to make it smaller, nothing is showing on the preview screen.  I've been doing some research but haven't found anything to make it work correctly.
Can someone help me with this?
In the end, what I'm attempting to do is add the QT video into my iWeb page and have it play. I'm not a coder so I don't know how to make this happen any other way than making a QT movie and then adding it iWeb.
    thanks in advance.

The only video format that supports transparency in a web browser is a flash player. That really doesn't fully support transparency either. The QuickTime player or any other video player will never ever support transparency in a web browser. Your project design is flawed from the outset. Another words you cannot do what you are trying to do using QuickTime. You will have to redesign for flash. If you redesign with flash, then you will not have a mobile compatible application.
I don't have much of an explanation of what you are trying to accomplish with your project so I can't give you more pointers than that. Point us to a website that has the features you are trying to implement on your webpage and maybe we can give you some ideas but After Effects is not where you should be looking.

  • 2 questions : How do I know if a video in Flash is streaming? 2nd - how can I make an overlay for video?

    Two questions :
    1) I have created a QT.mov, imported it into Flash, but after
thinking about it, I want to be sure it is streaming for the web.
How can I be sure of that? If it is not, what code can I put to
    make sure it is loading?
    2) How can I make an overlay for the video that disappears as
soon as the user clicks on the play button?

    1. Without a flash ciommunication server for TRUE streaming
of the file, what you get is called Progressive streaming. This
means once the video begins to download it can start playing before
the file has completely downloaded to the user. There are good
descriptions (including pros and cons) of this here:
    http://www.mediacollege.com/video/streaming/overview.html
    2. If you have the file set to start automatically there will
be no need for the user to push the play button. You could just put
a graphic on top of the video component, and use actionscript to
make the graphic invisible when the play button is pushed.

  • Installing elements for 10.6.8 and overlaying logo on video?

    Hi,
Just downloaded the trial of Premiere Elements, but it won't work as I am on a 32bit mac about 6 years old - running 10.6.8.
Please can someone tell me where I can get the right trial version for my OS?
    Thanks so much!
Also - this is the ONLY thing I am trying to do here:
I need to make videos with a logo overlaid in them. Either mooving image with my log on top or a slideshow of still photos, also with my logo on top.
Can Premiere Elements do this? if so, how? or please could you give me a link to where I can find instructions that are easy to undertand for a video novie like me?? :-)
I have tried iMovie and all sorts of other free mac video editors. In all the versions, my .png file is being imported with either a solid white or solid black background - even though I saved as a PNG 24 with transparency - and saving in exactly the same way for web graphics, works GREAT... (with the correct transparency) I also tried using psd files and tiffs (transparent tiffs) and got the same problems.
In fact in iMovie my png file gets imported with the graphics bleeding WAY beyond how it looks in my image editor... never seen that before, its really weird - anyone know why this is happening and how to fix?
Please can someone help me - if I need the full version of Premiere then I will have to look for anoher solution but I don't mind buying Elements if it works how I want and is EASY to do what I need.
    Thanks a lot! Clare :-)

Hi thanks for all the replies everyone. I am amazed that something this simple can take so many people so much time to not solve it though.
The first thing I posted was as clear as possible, do you really not understand what I am asking here?!

Not that far up - there has only been a few replies. The download manager did NOT let me choose my OS, and when I tried to use what I spent nearly 4 hours downloading, it told me it would only work on 64 bit systems therefore I presumed mine must not be that.
The intel core due thing is what I copied from my 'about this mac' area.

  • How do you use a photo as a placeholder for a video in ibooks author?

I am having trouble in ibooks author, I am trying to use a still photo as the place holder for a video, so what I want to do is when you click on the picture, a video will start playing. If anyone knows how to do it, please let me know, thanks!

iBooks Author lets you use an image, such as a .PNG (even one with transparency) as a poster image for your video. When tapped, this image will open your video in full-screen mode.
To do this, first drag your video file onto the page in iBooks Author to create a video widget. Select the widget and, in the Inspector panel under the Widget options, choose the Interaction tab, and check "Full-screen only" (Note: Using a separate image as a placeholder will only work if this option is checked).
Next, simply find the photo file you'd like to use as your poster image—it can be any file, not necessarily a frame from your video—and drag it over the video widget on the page until you see the edges highlighted in blue, and release. That image is now the placeholder for the video, and when tapped it will launch your video in full-screen mode.

  • Case Recommendations For 30G Video Ipod

I will b e getting the above Ipod within a couple of weeks. Should I just get a v-sheild or just a case or both. Also, could you recommend a case. Thanks so much.

I really like the hard plastic, transparent case
SeeThru Hard Case for iPod Video 30GB, 3 Pack
    Manufacturer: Speck Products
    Mfg Part #: IV30-3PK-SEE
Available from CompUSA and a bunch of others. $30 for a three pack in three colors (clear, smoke grey, and red).
Easy on the pocket, can see video through screen, prevents scratches, etc. One trick, though. A standard 1/8" mini stereo plug won't fit through the case. Shave a little off your soft plastic mini-plugs with a craft knife and it works like a charm.

  • Best practice to put overlay images on video?

    Hello community!
I would like to know what's the best way to put overlay images on videos, like ads ( actually ads )
I'd like to animate them and all that stuff, the thing is I believe I know how to do it, but I'm not sure.
On the one side I image that i should create a plugin to manage them, and a MediaElement to put them inside.
Supposably this mediaElement ( Ads ) should run in Parallel with the video.
I'm still investigating on that but I would appreciate any help!
    Thanks!

Yes, you're on the right track.  See this sample app for some additional guidance:
    http://opensource.adobe.com/svn/opensource/osmf/trunk/apps/samples/framework/LayoutSample/
The sample demonstrates the layout of an overlay bug by placing a VideoElement and ImageElement in a ParallelElement.  To map this to the ad use case, you might have the ImageElement encapsulated within a plugin.

  • Transparency problem for images

I have created a table for the main body of my site. In this
main body table I would like to have images that stick out slightly
over the sides of the table into the border areas on each side.
These images I’ve made in photoshop all have pink as the
background color because the main table body has the same color
background. The problem is that the borders either side of the main
body table are white and those images are going to look funny
because of the pink background I have applied to them. I know gif
transparency is an option but the image quality is poor and the
shadow effect I applied in photoshop is lost when I convert them to
gif. Is there any way around this ?

  • Semi-Transparent Overlay's on Text, Tables, Pictures

Hi, I'm new to Keynote. I wanted to create a table in which certain portions of the table are more visible than others. How can I do this? I was thinking about some sort of semi-transparent overlay.
    Here's an example:
Also, how can I do this for text in Keynote such that my current text sentence is visually set apart from previous text on a slide.
    Here's an example:

The first issue can be handled by setting the colour of the text and borders to a colour that you have made semi-opaque. Select the cells you want to change, then in the Text Inspector, click on the text colour to bring up the Colours Palette. Choose the colour, and then at the bottom of the palette use the opacity slider to change the opacity of the text to what you want. You can now drag that colour from the area at the top of the palette to one of the "swatch" squares at the bottom, so you can easily re-use it. Now go to the Graphic Palette, click on the stroke colour to bring up the Colour Palette again, and just click on the newly created swatch to set the lines to the same colour.
For the effect with the bullet points, you can either do a similar thing with the colour, or you can try using a Build In using the Delivery methods of "By Highlighted Bullet".

  • Searching Mac for analogue video capturing

I want to purchase a mac (not necessarily a minimac) and connect an analogue video tool with it. This video tool has a RGB output and a S-VHS output. Unfortunately there is no basic mac setup, I can connect it with. All the current macs only support digital video input. Is there a solution to my problem? The mac I'm looking for should be able to:
    * display the analogue video signal in realtime on the mainscreen and! on a second connected screen
    * take a high quality screenshot from the current video stream and safe it on the harddisk
Professional video editing and cutting is not necessary, only the overlay and the screenshots are important for this mac.
    Thank you for your help.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
...display the analogue video signal in realtime on the mainscreen and! on a second connected screen
There are no current Mac models which include the hardware to import/display analog video built-in. You will have to purchase some kind of third party analog-to-DV converter. (You may be able to simply use a DV camcorder to do this.) There are several available and each may include different kinds of features (for example a TV tuner). The ability to display a video image on two different screens will depend on the type of Mac you get and the hardware & software you're using to display the video. iMovie (which comes free on a new Mac) will not allow you to do this directly. Higher-end DV editing programs like Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro will allow you to use an external monitor (TV) to display the video you're editing. However, they may not be the best for displaying video in real-time as it's being imported (for example, Final Cut Express does not produce audio while capturing video).
You might consider using a device like El Gato's EyeTV. You could have a G5 tower with a regular monitor/display and a DVI to video adapter plugged into the second DVI connector and then connected to a TV.
...take a high quality screenshot from the current video stream and safe it on the harddisk...
Of course, there isn't really any such thing as "high quality screenshot" of an analog video screen on a computer. If you use an analog to DV converter, NTSC DV is 720 x 480. I suppose you could consider a full resolution capture "high quality". This can be done with several different video editing applications including the software which may come with an analog to DV converter with a TV tuner. But, it's not like you're going to get a higher resolution screen capture than the technology uses. I guess we'd have to know a little bit more about what, exactly, it is you're trying to capture before we could make some more recommendations.

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • Considering dumping my iMac for a PC used for DSLR video editing on Premiere CS6. Help!

So I edit mostly 1080p DSLR footage taken from my canon T3i camera. I purchased a 2011 (the latest model) iMac a little over a year ago, upgraded the RAM to 12GB and it has worked reasonably well. I purchased the base model for $1200 which has a quad core i5 processor, 512mb of video ram, and a measly 500gb hard drive. The past couple of days I have come to the realization that I only use Adobe Programs for graphically intensive work (premiere, after effects, etc). I originally bought my iMac for final cut, but FCPX SUCKS and I switched to Premiere CS6 which works like a dream. Anyways, I'm a senior in high school and do lots of video editing (going to major in video production in college). I'm likely going to differ college for a year and continue my video production business (pretty informal) as well as video production internships at a couple companies (so don't suggest that I get a laptop for portability, not an issue). I just shot an entire wedding with 2 DSLR's and the footage takes up over 20% of my hard drive which is unacceptable. This is very troublesome for me and has been clogging up my computer considerably. I have realized it would make a lot of sense to sell my iMac and purchase a PC that's not only faster, but has much more space. I was ideally looking to sell my iMac for $1000, and from that get a better and faster PC setup for my video editing. $200 would be allocated for a 24" 1080p LED 5ms Asus monitor (from newegg) which would leave $800 remaining for the PC. Ideally it'd be nice to have a little cash left over. Some things that sound appealing to me are: an intel i7 quad core proccessor at least 3.0+ Ghz,  16 GB of ram (maybe 8 to start), 1 GB of video RAM (here is where I'm stuck, my Imac had a Radeon 512mb video card in it, but I've heard premiere runs especially well with nVidia CUDA cards? Don't really know too much about this stuff.) I have no idea what type of card to get, and if I would even see a performance upgrade from my iMac. For storage I'd like at least 2TB of space, should I get two seperate 1 TB drives? One for boot and software and another for video files? Anyways, I assume I can benefit from selling my 2011 i5 iMac to get a faster PC equivalent at a lower price since I mainly edit videos (which is pretty graphically intense) from an HD DSLR camera. I've noticed premiere rendering times on my mac are starting to get pretty slow these days. Ideally it'd be nice to buy a desktop (already assembled) maybe from HP for around $600 (not including the monitor). I'm not completely against building a PC from parts (since I know a friend who can do it for me) I just need help figuring out WHAT exactly it is that I need and would benefit from.
