A workflow for archiving and de-archiving HD clips

A few months ago I put out a query on the best workflow to use for archiving HD footage whilst maintaining the flexibility of importing to iMovie and doing some editing at a later date. I don't have a super fast mac (yet) so editing the HD in iMovie can be a bit of a pain. Thanks to Appleman1958 for some top tips. I thought I'd share my workflow with you.
Once I have some clips on the camcorder I want to archive the original footage without having to go through iMovie everytime (which decompresses the clip files to HUGE sizes!). But I also want to be able to quickly de-archive some footage and make a simple DVD or make a movie on the (upgraded!) computer.
1) I connect the camera to the mac via USB. I have turned off the iMovie Auto-open function. The camera appears as a mounted drive on the desktop.
2) I open Toast 9. I set it up to make a "Mac Only" Data disc. I open the camcorder drive and locate the AVCHD folder. I drag the AVCHD folder into the Toast 9 window.
3) I then tell Toast 9 to make a Disc Image as opposed to a real disc. I name it appropriately and save it to a hard drive. This is step one of the archiving. I now have a digital copy of the original camcorder clips in their original format (not Mb hungry .mov)
4) After a while, when I have a bunch of disc image files, from different sessions, I tranfer them all onto a real DVD Data Disc. This now gives me a hard copy of the original camcorder files which I can store securely away from thunderstorms and what not.
If I decide to make a simple DVD from any old footage I do the following:
1) I connect the camcorder (with no clips on it) to the mac.
2) I insert a DVD Data Disc with archived disc images on it, or I navigate to a disc image file on a hard drive.
3) I mount the selected disc image on the desktop using Toast 9 (gives you the option in a right click context menu in Finder). This allows me to see the AVCHD folder in the disc image.
4) I move the AVCHD folder onto the camcorder, replacing the one that was already there. If I was to open iMovie at this point it would read the old clips off the camcorder.
5) I disconnect the camcorder that now has the old clips on it. When I turn it on it says it needs to rebuild the image database (guess it prefers to make clips rather than have them thrust upon it!). I say OK and it thinks for a few seconds. Next thing - presto! The old archived video clips play like I just shot them.
6) I then hook up the camcorder to my Sony VRD-MC5 DirectDVD. I can then make a one-touch DVD of some or all of the clips for use in my BlueRay player.
At any time I can mount a disc image on the desktop and open iMovie. I can then import all/some of the clips from the mounted disc image (whcih is just an AVCHD folder) and go about making my movie.
But I'm usually happy with just being able to make a simple DVD for viewing with family/friends. Note that for all of this to work as well as it does I needed to buy Toast, a Blueray player and the Sony DirectDVD. But it was worth it as I can now easily archive all my footage safe in the knowledge that it is all readily transferable into iMovie or onto a playable DVD at any time.
To anyone else out there struggling to get to grips with their new HD AVCHD camcorder I hope this has been of some use. Again, thanks to Appleman for helping me out. There is no doubt an even easier process that I am unaware of but so far this is working out well for me. My original post is at: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7118597#7118597

Thanks for posting your experience.
If you move the entire contents of your camera instead of just the AVCHD folder, you should be able to mount your disk image and import directly from there, without having to plug in your camera and transfer it back there. I haven't tried this in Toast, but it should work. It works well in disk utility.
Also, just FYI since you have all the tools, I have found that if I create a playable BluRay DVD using a standard DVD using Toast, I can insert the DVD in my Mac, and it is recognized as a camera. I can then import the edited movie back into imovie.

  • Is there a workflow for approval and Reversal of Regular Journal

    Hi All,
Is there a workflow for approval and Reversal of Regular Journal .
can we use  the standard park document workflow for the same .. ???
    Thanks ,

For such activities you would probably better make use of ISR.

  • Final Cut Server is for video and photo archiving?

Too many products in the last few years. I used to use iPhoto to archive both photos and video and edit them. Now I have moved to the professional line but it gets more confusing.
Aperture2: archiving and cataloguing thousands of pictures with minor edits
Adobe CS4: major edits to my pictures
FCP6: video edit but with no archiving and/or metadata capability
Final Cut Server: for what? Can it archive/metadata all my video and all my Aperture files and work
seamlessly between all these four programs?
Please help. I am considering buying Final Cut Server. I am both a photographer as well as a videographer running many different cameras over many different kinds of shoots. And I am trying to simplify my work process.
    Thanks,
    Brian

We were in a similar situation as well.
We use Adobe products for photo and desktop stuff
    and FCP Suite for video.
We ingest images with Bridge and add keywords.
The raw files are backed up and the corrected images
are processed (Photoshop/Image Processor) and dropped
into a Final Cut Server watch folder.
This action automatically adds the files to FCS for
easy access as well as backs up the images to an
external FTP in our desktop publishing office across
town. Desktop has its own version of FCS that adds
the new files and makes them available for designers.
When we shoot video we shoot mainly with Sony EX3
camcorders with SxS media. Footage is downloaded
and tagged in XDCAM Transfer. The folder that is
labeled "Import" in the utility is also a watch
folder which added the files to FCS.
So in other words Final Cut Server has us organized
and working together much better than we were before.

  • Best workflow for DSLRs and Speedgrade / Premiere?

Can anyone suggest a workflow for DSLR footage using Premiere and Speedgrade? I would like to be able to roundtrip and do a light grade on clips and sequences before completed the offline edit. Is this possible? I know in the video tuts it seems to work for Red footage, but I couldn't get it to work for me with my 5d mark iii footage. It's all new to me having recently switched to Adobe from FCP and also to DSLR from camcorders. Thanks

Speedgrade isn't designed to go pre-edit, so right now there's no dynamic link with the other CS6 apps. It's intended to sit post-edit in a classical film studio workflow, with Sg ingesting only the final edited frames and exporting your production masters.
If you "send" a Premiere Pro sequence to Sg you will render out a single DPX image sequence (including effects and transitions, and without any references to edit markers or original filenames) and so importing that back into Pr would flatten your entire timeline to a single clip. Any changes to the Pr timeline and you'd have to do it all over again.
You can export an EDL from Pr and use that in Sg to read the native footage (provided it's compatible*), but  grading is not stored into the original files so it won't re-appear in your Pr timeline unless you manually re-import.
If you want to use Sg pre-edit, the options are:
Grade all your footage before ever touching Pr, export everything to lossless video or image sequences and work with those, forgetting about the original files completely (you'll need a bunch of disk space and hopefully a MOS shooting pattern, as your audio will be split out).
Grade a sample of every clip you're using, then save a Look for each one. Export the Looks as 3D LUT files (.cube) and use a plugin to apply them to your clips. Right now there's no official plugin for Premiere (Magic Bullet LUT Buddy isn't certified past CS5) but After Effects can apply both the .cube and the .look files via the "Apply Color LUT" effect. Note that some changes in Sg are not included in the Look, such as the choice of color space and tone curve, so what you see in Sg may not be what you get back in Pr.
I'm not downplaying the abilities of Sg, but it's a colorist's tool and doesn't sit very well in the CS6 unified concept of "one person can make a movie". It helps to think of it in terms of the union system in Hollywood - an editor never grades and a colorist never edits, so their tools look completely different, work completely different, and the electronic conversation only goes in one direction.
*Sg was designed with digital cinema in mind so it doesn't work with interlaced footage, plus it generally assumes you're feeding it log so be careful when picking defaults. It's one occasion where something like the Cinestyle fake-log profile for Canon DSLRs comes in handy.

  • Workflow for PR and PO release

    Dear Freinds
Can any one help me by giving a step by step details for the above mentioned workflow.
    Regards
    Deva

    Hi ,
for PO and PR release , you have to set up a release strategy.
For doing this , follow the path
    MM- Purchasing - PO/PR - release procedure for PO/PR
in here , you have to create charecteristics and classes.
charecteristics are the factors on which release is based , like order value, purchasing group, etc.Class is a collection of charecteristics. Then you have to define release procedure and check the release strategies.
The important  part is to map the current parameters your client is using on to the configuration.

  • Color managed workflow for web and camera raw

I recently calibrated my monitor and was wondering what is the preferred workflow for the web? I shoot with my camera in sRGB and my working space in Photoshop is sRGB aswell. The problem that has arised now is that the color managed colors in Photoshop are way different than the non-color managed in my web browser. Is this normal? And what I don't quite get is how a photo that has an embed sRGB profile looks the same in Firefox (that understand embed profiles) and Photoshop, but in Google Chrome (that does not recognize embed color profiles) shows the colors very differently, although the browser should understand the photo is in sRGB by default and show the same colors that are in Photoshop, right? So what happens here, because the colors are not the same? What information does Photoshop assign to the embed color profile that makes the colors so different?
Anyway, I assume the problem here seems to be my newly calibrated monitor profile. The only way I can get the same colors to my photo in Photoshop and to a photo in web is to use soft proofing set to my Monitor RGB AND save without a color profile. Is this the way to go? But here comes another problem. I shoot in RAW and use camera raw to edit my photos. Camera Raw doesn't allow soft proofing, so I'm stuck with these color managed colors that are so different from non-color managed colors I get in my browser that any color correction in Camera Raw is simply useless. Unless everyone was using color managed browsers and I could start to use fully color managed workflow, but that's not the case I suppose. So, what's the solution here?

First off, you need to be working in sRGB, or converting to sRGB when you save out files that are destined for the web. You can change the color space that Camera Raw (ACR) send your raw files to by clicking the blue text in the bottom center of the ACR window. This is probably that safest workflow for you until you get a handle on color management. If the color of your images is very important, you might consider embedding a color profile in them, which will help color managed browsers render your color properly.
If your display's color gamut is different than sRGB (many are), you'll find matching colors for non-color-managed browsers to be impossible. But consider the average display and take heart. The best you can do is correct to a standard and hope for the best.
Both the convert to sRGB and embed color profile options are in the save for web dialogue box.

  • InCopy/Indesign workflow for printed and folio mags?

We have a printed magazine that we also produce as folios for a DPS app. We produce the mag by using InCopy for text within the InDesign workflow. No problems there.
When finished (all edits completed) we produce the folio files but adding in all the links to twitter handles, URL's etc is proving tedious and timeconsuming for the editors and the designer. The editors (who use the print files and InCopy) produce a list in excel of the additions - they reference columns and paragraphs - which we don't use in the folio version. The designer then finds the spot after a lot of searching and then copies and pastes.  All very tedious and a backward step in workflow.
Is there a way to include the "links" in an InCopy file that doesn't appear on the print PDF's yet apply correctly in the folios?

    Use conditional text.
All interactive elements should be inline objects or simple hyperlinks that are tagged with a condition, then either showing or hidden depending on the article. Hide the interactive content when you create the PDF for print, and show the condition when adding or updating the article.
Anything you want to show/hide has to be part of a story — so text, inline objects, and anchored objects can all be used this way.
InCopy can see and apply conditional text, but cannot edit DPS-centric content such as an anchored MSO.
As always, using matching versions of ID/IC is important.

  • EScalation workflow for SC and PO

We have implemented SRM7 process controlled workflows. Would like to know how can we achieve escalation workflow for either shopping cart or PO's.
Scenario is like this : If Manager A has not taken any action, the workitem has to be escalated to his manager after 2 days. If manager B has not taken any action, then it has to be escalated to his manager C after 3 days.
Is there any standard way to achieve this.
    Please advice.
    Regards,
    Pavan.

    Hi,
The escalation to manager level is done by deadline monitoring, but escalation to manager of manager and so on can de done through custom program.. I have done the similar requirement in my customer.. below is the technical details..
    Selection Screen
Field name       Selection Text     Type      Size     Default Value     Obligatory ( Y / N )
    P_STATUS       Status                          J_STATUS          I1015                         Y
    P_TIMESTAMP Time Period(hours)     I                          48                           Y
Below is the development flow for this object.
    1.     Declare the internal table as it_status and workarea as lw_status for the structure JSTAT. Pass p_status value to lw_status workarea and append to lt_status.
    2.     Pass  lt_stauts value to function module u2018BBP_PD_SC_GETLISTu2019 to get the all awaiting for shopping cart into table parameter e_pdlist into lt_sc_no. lt_sc_no is an internal table of structure bbp_pds_pdlist.
    3.     Loop through lt_sc_no into lw_sc_no. lw_sc_no is a workarea of the internal table lt_sc_no.
    4.     lw_sc_no-object_id is holding the shopping cart number . Pass lw_sc_no-object_id value to function module u2018BBP_PD_SC_GETDETAILu2019 to get the CREATED_AT value. CREATED_AT value will be in importing parameter E_HEADER of the function module.
    5.      Declare lv_timestamp with type ad_tstamp.
    6.      Move CREATED_AT value to lv_timestamp.
    7.      Multiply 60 * 60 with p_timestamp into lv_second. lv_second is type of I.
    8.      Pass lv_second to the function module u2018ADDR_ADD_TO_TIMESTAMPu2019 and get the changing
parameter of the function module into lv_timestamp.
    9.     declare fields as lv_date type c(8),lv_time type c(6),lv_final type string.
    10.     move sy-datlo to lv_date.
    11.     move sy-timlo to lv_time.
    12.     concatenate lv_date lv_time into lv_final.
    13.     check lv_timestamp is less than lv_final.
    14.     If this is true then call method GET_CURRENT_PROCESS_LEVEL of the class /SAPSRM/CL_WF_PROCESS_MANAGER and pass the SC Header GUID to the method to get the current approver id.
    15.     declare ls_approver_id as structure with approver_id , object_id fields.
    16.     move approver id to an internal table lt_approver_id. lt_approver_id is structure of ls_approver_id.
    17.     sort lt_approver_id by approver_id.
    18.     loop through lt_approver_id .
    19.     use STATEMENT AT END OF approver_id.
    20.     call function module u2018BBP_READ_ATTRIBUTESu2019 to get the SLAPPROVER attribute value  by passing approver id.
    21.     call function module u2018BAPI_USER_GET_DETAILu2019 to get the Email id of the current approver and DOA / SLAPPROVER of approver.
    22.     call function module u2018SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_ATT_SEND_API1u2019 to send the notification Eamil with consolidate SCu2019s.
    23.     The content of email body to be decided.
    24.     write the success message with Shopping cart number.
you have to change this technical details to meet your requirement
I thought to have blog for this requirement, but could not make it..

  • Workflow for editing and organizing video with PSE7 and PRE7

I'm quite new to using PSE to organize my videos, and would appreciate suggestions on tutorials or guides creating a nice workflow to keep the growing number of clips manageable.
What I've done is to import my videos into a separate catalog, and I kind of hoped that I could make version sets like with still photos. I can't seem to find that option. Is it possible?
Alternatively, I'd like to just replace the original clip with an edited version, but again I haven't found an easy way to do it.
Any suggestions on how to start are welcome, also if they take a different approach from what I mention above.

I've created an overview of the Organizer and its functions for Muvipix.com. You can find it here:
    http://muvipix.com/products.php?subcat_id=7
Otherwise, there's unfortunately little information on it.
http://www.muvipix.com, a site set up by a number of experienced Premeiere Elements users with some support from Adobe, offers one of the most friendly, helpful forums on the web and includes a large number of complimentary products including tutorials, tips, DVD templates, stock footage, motion backgrounds and sound effects. And, for a small annual fee which we use to keep the site up and running, you can have unlimited downloads from our ever-growing library of high-end tutorials, tips and products.

  • Best workflow for progressive and interlaced video.

I'm making a video that will go to the web and may end up on television (SD PAL) Should I shoot progressive for the web or interlaced for broadcast and deinterlace later. Is it easier to de-interlace than RE-interlace - assuming the latter is possible.

Both are possible, and neither difficult. What matters more is the "look" that you want. If you shoot interlaced (60i) it will have a "Video Look." Progressive was designed to look like film, particularly 24p. 30P is kind of a middle ground between the two. Shoot some tests and see which appeals to you.

  • Are  XML-based archiving and XI archiving the same thing?

If not , what's the difference?   Thanks!

    Hai,
XML archiving is primarily used for XML archiving objects implemented by ABAP applications with XML interfaces, and archiving sets implemented by JAVA applications. There are currently two archiving sets available for this scenario for XI data: XI_SEC and XI_AF_MSG.
XI archiving is based on the Integration Engine, BPE, Adapter Engine, etc.,
XI_AF_MSG represents the layer of Adapter engine.

  • EDI Workflow for errors and TEDE5

Not sure this is the exact right place to ask this question but it concerns workflow.  I just need to know how can I start or stop workflow from happening for edi errors.  Either inbound or outbound.  I have discovered there has been code placed in the sap supplied function module(EDI_DATA_INCOMING) that call another FM to start workflow(IDOC_ERROR_WORKFLOW_START).  It passes an "Event Code".  for instance EDII.  This event has a task associated with it which creates the workflow item.  Does anyone know how to configure or maintain these event codes.  There are several tables associated with them that I have found one being TEDE5.  I think there should be a t-code somewhere or a configuration area that allows these to be activated or inactivated.  I base this on the fact that there is a column in the table for "inaktiv".  Also the code checks for the inaktiv value and exits if it is inactive.  Just need to know if anyone knows how to manage these tables concerning workflow.

I have found the answer myself.  There is a view over this table.  VEDI_TEDE5.  This can be maintained in SM30 and the changes transported.  The inacktiv column can be selected to inactivate any of the event codes.
