ABAP future
Hi all,
I am an ABAPer. I have ABAP experience of around 1 yr.I will be extreamly thankful if somebody will explain where ABAP is heading as SAP gradually shifting to Netweaver. All i mean to say is wheather ABAP will be obsolete down the line and in that case which componenet of Netweaver or Functional is best so that ABAP skills are utilised.Otherwise how ABAPer should groum himself for following years. Please explain in a bit detail.
Thanks.
Hi,
if I understand your question correctly... I will try to answer it with my personal example:
I am new to ABAP as well (1 year) and after some time I plan to migrate to SAP Business Warehouse (BW).
Here you might ask me two questions:
1.why?
2.when?
I try to answer:
1. because area of knowledge has to be not only deep but wide as well.
2. I plan to do this when I notice that my progress in ABAP is slowing down.
I believe that there is no man who knows everything of ABAP, but there are a lot of experts who know a lot and they are not making such a great progress as new comers do.
Regards,
Mindaugas

ABAP Future in next coming years
Hi,
I have 4 year experience in SAP ABAP/4. There are so many comments that ABAP have been obsolete in next few year's. This is true about it.
Then what will be the SAP ABAPer future.
If we can switch any other module, which one is best for ABAPer.
Note: - I have good knowledge of Functional also - SD / MM/ FICO / alongwith ABAP.
Plz help...
Edited by: @ABAP@ on Feb 16, 2010 7:28 PMI have read many questions on ABAP is dead or what?
They point to ominous signs: they tells that all the new SAP programs are written in Java (not true), and they are concerned that the NetWeaver CE is an exclusively Java-based environment (true). The NetWeaver Developer Studio is also almost exclusively Java-based (also true).
But ABAP is not as dead as some might think, there are still more than 238,000,000 lines of ABAP code in SAP. ABAP is still entrenched in SAP, and SAP is still entrenched in ABAP.
ABAP is still making its presence felt: some of the new NetWeaver PI functionality was written in ABAP. You might not see it when you work with PI, but the ABAP is there underneath, keeping things humming along.
Thomas Jung of SAP Labs, who writes an outstanding developeru2019s blog on SDN, telling - some of the underlying NetWeaver functions were written in ABAP, and of course there is the Web Dynpro for ABAP. Jung also told that the ABAP Workbench is indeed part of NetWeaver, and is being equipped with many of the Java side of NetWeaver is receiving.
ABAP is still the part of the SAP.
So I think thats it on ABAP, that will be there always. No implementation is possible without ABAP.
So the ABAP is dead or not doesn't leads to answer "Yes" or "No".
But for now, we can safely say that ABAP is not going anywhere. Itu2019s also becoming clear that whether youu2019re an SAP ABAP person or an SAP Java person, if you donu2019t make a commitment to understanding the latest generation of modeling tools (CE, Visual Composer, Aris for NetWeaver, etc.), and how they fit into the emerging Enterprise Architecture, youu2019re going to be left behind.

Query about ABAP future in SAP HANA
Hello Experts,
I have read many articles and SDN post about SAP HANA but does not get clear answer.
I am having 7 years of experience of SAP ABAP and wanted to learn ABAP in SAP HANA.
I learn that SAP HANA is having its own language also as SQL script in earlier release but would this be using also in current and future.
So would learning of SQL script give more advantage and how can i get started learning ABAP in SAP HANA.
Thanks
SHivDear Shivshanker,
for ABAP for SAP HANA see http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-29357.
In addition there are some nice blogs by Thomas Jung. You can use, for example,http://scn.sap.com/community/in-memory-business-data-management/blog/2012/04/11/test as entry.

Will 'Learning Portal iView' be an ABAP webdynpro application in future?
Hi everyone,
just wondering if this application will be written in webdynpro ABAP for any future releases? Right now it is a BSP application(HCM_Learning). If anyone has any links or any info on that....will be greatly appreciated...
Thanks....
AS....Anyone?
Thanks...

will nay body tell the future technology of abap ? i came to know right now calls are less in abap ? Hi Abapers answer to my question
Lets think about this logically for a second. There are literally millions of lines of ABAP code in SAP solutions. ERP which is written in ABAP is installed on most of the worlds largest companies and has been proven over the past 30 years or so. The runtime is stable, the lanuage is powerful. Do you honestly think that SAP will dump its investment in ABAP simply to change the language that its solutions are written in? I think not. There will always be a place for ABAP, because there will always be companies wanting to enhance the SAP standard and develop custom applications. Even with the introduction of NetWeaver( particularly the NetWeaver Portal ) there is still a place for ABAP. If you want to pull out some data from your ERP system you would need to either develop your application using WEb Dynpro for ABAP, or expose this data via a web service or RFC enabled function module so that you can consume it using Web Dynpro for Java.
If you are an ABAP developer and want to keep your skills up to date, I would suggest watching SDN closely and shopping for some books on SAP Press( www.sap-press.com ) There are some very good ABAP books there which will help you keep you ABAP skills up to date.

Future for JNET UI elements in ABAP Webdynpro?
Hi,
I recently had the opportunity to do an interesting project that included producing a Gantt chart in an ABAP web dynpro application. I used the standard Gantt UI element, which is a JNET control.
I had to learn a lot about using JNET and specifically the Gantt with webdynpro. I found some documentation but what I found is not very up to date, and I learned a few things the hard way. I am interested in possibly sharing what I learned here in a blog, but I am wondering if there is much interest? And anyway, will the JNET elements continue to be part of webdynpro or will they be replaced? For example, would Flash Islands be preferred over the JNET controls?
Does anyone know what the future might be for these JNET UI elements?
Thanks,
Margaret>And anyway, will the JNET elements continue to be part of webdynpro or will they be replaced? For example, would Flash Islands be preferred over the JNET controls?
This is the SAP internal rules about JNET: JNET superseeds Islands. If something can be done in JNET, it must be done in JNET instead of Islands. Here is an example. An internal team built a org chart viewer in Flex as a Flash Island. However all Islands must be approved by the SAP UI Governance Council. The Council determined that the same thing could have been acomplished with JNET and therfore the Flex version was never allowed to ship to customers. Hopefully that example shows that we take JNET pretty seriously inside of SAP. -
Javascript future in Webdynpro (JAVA and ABAP)
Hi WebDyn Pro's,
I see many sophisticated capabilities enabled inside Webdynpro for JAVA from use of Javascript. Further, in many cases, Javascript provides the only solution for the requirements!
From this forum, I think I hear that Javascript capabilities may be disallowed in future WebDynpro releases by SAP.
I have 3 questions related to this:
1. Why would SAP want to disallow usage of Javascript inside WebDynpro applications? What is the harm?
2. Does SAP think that customers should be able to provide these same capabilities without use of Javascript?
3. Will this same Javascript limitation exist in WebDynpro for ABAP?
Thanks,
Kevin"Many sophesticated capabilities enabled inside Webdynpro for JAVA from use of Javascript." - that is true
1. It is to have a standard for development inside, and outside SAP. Otherwise developers will use ... who knows what they will develop... and there have been quality problems in projects that SAP has to deliver - SAP has 30,000 employees, any of whome can develop in their free time. With the current framework, all these issues have been taken into consideration.
2. SAP and the Webdynpro development team in Walldorf will continue to enhance the webdynpro framework in the forseeable future. There is an alternative if you want to use Javascript. Please use Java Dyn Pages for unlimited java script coding. This can be seen in Portal Development Manual. http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/fd/01f34026d70b06e10000000a155106/content.htm
3. Yes it will apply in ABAP. WebDynpro is the common framework that is used for both ABAP and Java. It Java/ABAP independent "so" to say. But it works better with Java right now than ABAP.

My puzzle in ABAP Development's future
As we know, after the issue of Netweaver platform,Java became a good development solution.
Compared with Java, what position is ABAP placed on? Will ABAP be eliminatd some day?
Java & ABAP ,which may have a better future?
Expect your views.Hi Alex,
As far as features are concerned JAVA is far ahead than ABAP, but on the other side ABAP can not fully comparable with JAVA as it is specific to SAP platform only. Now you can see that along with JAVA, ABAP stack is also been added to SAP web developement platform. ABAP objects are getting more preference to make it helpful in web appication scenarios.
Also ABAP can not be dropped out as it is the core and legacy of SAP modules which however may be made more flexible with JAVA for efficiant web accessiblity, somehow will depends on ABAP stack only to access SAP backend. e.g. JAVA based RFCs calling ABAP FMs to get data from SAP backend since SAP doesn't recoomemend direct adapters bypassing ABAP functionality.
For more see this

Hi
With the introduction of the Java stack in the latest releases and the enhancements made, can anyone tell me if Java will replace ABAP or not? Is there a possibility?
If not, how the future will be like, with respect to ABAP and Java?
Thanks
Arunhi guru,
we were used on 4.6B,C and enterprise portal 4.7E and kernel 610,620,630,640 we are used ABAP stak.from Netweaver 2004SR1 onwards we are using ICM ie Java stak GUI is 700.present days Java stack is better than ABAP.because in future NW is very valuble than other so JAVA is better than ABAP and also In NW JAVA connectivity is must.
i hope it is healpfull to you.

Newbie asking on future of the ABAP Language.
Firstly, I am a newbie and would appreciate your kind patience.
Thank you.
I would like to kindly ask your expert oppinion on the future of the ABAP programming Language.
I read that the ABAP language will be phased out with the JAVA language ?
Is this for real ?
Do you mean that to tell me that all the hard years spent mastering ABAP will all be worthless in the coming few years ?
Any feedback would be well appreciated.
I hope I have not attracted any flames by my newbie question.
Thank you so much for your time.
AndyHi Andy,
It is not true, nobody is saying or in anyway indicating that Java will replace ABAP. Java is being introduced in SAP Netweaver platform as an additional language. Java has some great strenghts, so does ABAP. This is a typical programmer worry, why can't we accept the fact many languages can co-exist (and they are, if you look at the industry as a whole VB, VC++, C#, PHP, PERL etc). Today with SOA we are moving toward a service oriented world, where all that will matter is what service you are providing (not the platform or least the language used to develop it).
As an individual you should not concern yourself too much with programming language, move yourself up in value chain . Think about business solutions, not languages. If I look back at my short career of 6 years as SAP professional, I probably spent not more than 1 year learning the language itself. But rest of the knowledge I gained working with ABAP applies to any language.
Read some trends -
1. Latest version of mySAP ERP the most significant application in SAP portfolio is enhanced with ABAP not Java.
2. Currently the most popular application mySAP CRM, mostly developed using ABAP.
3. APO, BW are all on ABAP.
4. Collectively 99% of SAP Application's business logic is on ABAP.
Even if SAP wants to replace ABAP with Java they will go bankrupt if they try to do it and it will be a disaster because application's worth comes from it's maturity and maturity comes from usage over a long period.
So my dear friend Andy please sit back and relax. Build upon what you already have rather than throwing it ways.
Cheers,
Sanjeev -
ABAP HR- How to retrieve employees in past and future date
I have a requirement in which i have to retrieve employees as mentioned below:
User provides value for KEY DATE on selection screen ( I am using PNPCE selection screen).
Now, i have to retrieve employees between date range (KEY DATE- 30 days ) and ( KEY DATE + 30 days) .
example : user provides 31.10.2009 as KEY DATE on selection screen . Therefore, i have to process all employees within date range 01.10.2009 and 30.11.2009.
I am using PNPCE logical database, Can anyone tell me how to achieve this by using GET PERAS event.
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
AleriaPN-BEGDA and PN-ENDDA will initially be the same date, if this is a custom program then before you do the GET PERAS statement you can make PN-ENDDA = PN-BEGDA + 30.

Serious Performance Problems in ABAP Reports
Hi All,
We are developing ABAP reports for SAP IS-U/CCS Modules and facing Performance issues.Whole scenario is given below. Please suggest some solution.
1. Total No. Of Business Partners = 1500000
2. Reports Selection Criteria are of two types:
a) GSBER(Business Area) - Selection for atleast 200000 Business Partners
b) Cokey(Division) - Selection for around 1000 to 50000 Business Partners
3. For implementing our reports logic we have to access several tables all of which are very large. They are :
Table Name No. of records (Appx)
DBERCHV 20000000
DBERCHZ1 20000000
DBERDLB 20000000
DFKKKO 20000000
DFKKOP 20000000
EANLH 4000000
ERCH 10000000
ERCHC 10000000
ETTIFN 30000000
EVER 1500000
FKKVKP 1500000
TECOKT 500
TGSBT 12
4. Due to large no. of records we are facing problems at two levels:
a) OpenSQL Statement is taking too much time for data selection
b) Since large no. of records are selected Corresponding loops and data processing also takes much time
5. We have tried almost all ABAP Performance optimization techniques such as using Index, SQL optimization techniques,Read Table Optimization, Loop Statement Optimization etc. but there is not much improvement.
6. For example one of our Reports "R15" takes around 1500 seconds for 1000 Business Partners.
Its Code is attached below:
<b>a) ZISU_SCHL_LTR15_BAPI - Program which schedules actual R15 report in background</b>

Poll: Development in ABAP Objects / Webdynpro vs. classical Dynpro
Hey there ABAP developers,
I just want to ask if you can give me one or two minutes of your attention for two poll questions.
At the moment I´m writing my master thesis about the development of a monitoring tool in ABAP. One of my bigger chapters is about the decision, which programming paradigm should be used for new development projects in SAP. And another important one is about WebDynpro vs. classical Dynpros.
Because of the fact, that I can´t create any polls in here, I just started this discussion and hope for many replies .
It would be very nice if some of you could give me an answer to the following questions (only 2 ), so that I can maybe use the result of this poll in my master thesis, if there are enough responses.
1. What percentage of new development projects are you developing in ABAP Objects? (Not to be considered small reports that just runs for only one time)
A. 0 %
B. less than 25%
C. 25% - 49%
D. 50% - 75%
E. more than 75%
2. Which GUI technology do you prefer?
A. Classical Dynpro
B. WebDynpro
C. Business Server Pages (BSP)
D. others (please mention)
I want to thank you in advance for answering the questions,
Best regards,
ChristophHi,
Present SAP Implementation projects are very rare, maximum projects are support and up gradations only .
If they want Implement the SAP newly , defiantly they should creating ABAP Objects.
Why Because ABAP Objects are Object Oriented Concepts, so, for future reference and re usability..etc .
Now Come to the First Quetion.
if it is implementation project ABAP Objects are 25% - 49%.
if it is Support project ABAP Objects are 25%
Now Come to the Second Quetion.
Depend upon Reqmnt, but Most of the Applications are Webdynpro . i.e 70%.
Remaining 30% All ( BSP and GUI ....Etc..)
This is my opinion.

2004s BI Portal (BI-Java) and BI-ABAP: doublestack vs. separated stack
Hi specialists,
We plan to migrate our NW2004 System (no Portal in use) to NW7.0.
For the NW7.0 Portal Architecture we are not sure what to choose:
- BI-ABAP and BI Portal (BI-Java) on the same instance (doublestack)
- BI-ABAP and BI Portal (BI-Java) on seperate instances (separated stack architecture)
Medium term we assume, that the portal is used for Web-Reporting and integrated planning. The development of applications (Java, Visual Composer) will be the exception.
But if our reporting requirements changes and the number of own applications is increasing?
Which is the best possibility to be future-proof?
- Is it possible to separate the doublestack architecture later?
- Is it possible to "transport" Portal stuff/applications from a doublestack system to a separated stack system?
- If the number of Portal-applications is increasing, is it an opportunity to set up an additional BI-Portal which is connected to the doublestack BI system?
Thanks for your help.
Regards
Karin.Hi
Too many questions .But its interesting.Ok lets take one by one.
You can have either of the options depending on the amount of data and your hardware.
I would suggest if you have the hardware go for seperate machines for each kind of installation.I mean have a BI system((dual Stack) + Portal or you can have portal on a seperate machine also. Then you can have another portal (single stack). And using the FPN(Federated Portal Network) concept you can actually implement ur scenrio.
Note :BI-Java cannot be installed seperately you need a portal for it.
Yes FPN can be used to transport the data from one portal to another. To the last questioin i have already answered ,its better to go for a seperate BI system.
Any other doubts feel free to ask:

Hello All,
Good Morning,
We have received an Incident where in the Sales Order during the ATP Check we do user is getting the future schedule line date in future as enclosed in the screen shot below. User has created the Sales Order on 12052014 for 7 line items. For the Line Item 7 the Stock is available in the system on same day but still after ATP Check the date is shown in future.
I wan to replicate the scenario in Quality to find the exact bug to fix the Issue but not able to replicate for same customer and material i am getting the current date as confirmed delivery date. please guide me if you can share some inputs so that i can go in right direct and fix the issue.
Please respond it is critical Issue.
Thanks,
Farhan.Hello All Experts,
Many Thanks for all the Inputs you have given.
Finally we have replicated the Issue in Quality 2 Days Back and Indeed it was great Achievement.
Finally We have given to Abaper to debug it find the root cause.
Let me summarise the actual Issue.
Issue : Sales Order Schedule Line showing future date for the Materials which are having Product Allocation even though the Stock is available and Allocation Qty also available in the PA Master Data we maintained..
We created one Sales Order for Line Item A and B. Line Item A is having Product Allocation. When we created Sales Order for both Line Item A and B we got Schedule Line Date as 13.06.2014. Then we Schedule the Re-Scheduling Job in V_V2 and check the effect. For Line Item A the Schedule Line Date got changed to 01.07.2014 and Line Item B it was same as before.
Would like to know is there any config setting at Schedule Line Level we have missed just want to cross check if there is any or something in Product Allocation Configuration.
Please refer screen shots below for more details of Sales Order before and after effect in Re-Scheduling.
Please provide your inputs on this.
Thanks,
Farhan.
