Aborting Install

Leopard won't install on my MacBook Pro. I would like to go back to Tiger...if it still exists. But how do I abort the Install disc? If I click "Quit Mac OS X Installer," I get three choices...
1. Restart
2. Startup Disk
3. Don't Quit
The first choice would presumably restart my computer with the Install disk, leading to another failed attempt at installing Leopard. If I click "Startup Disk," the choices are Max OS X, 10.5.1. on Mac . . . Install DIV," which means I'm still dependent on the Install disk.
I don't understand what a "Network Startup" is.
Does this mean my Tiger OS no longer exists? Is there a way to eject my Install disk using my keyboard, which would hopefully default me to Tiger?
Thanks.

From the sound of it, you do not have a Tiger backup. Your best bet is to abort the install and immediately backup the internal drive in order to recover as much of Tiger as you can.
If you use the internal HD, you will be overwriting data.
Whatever reason that Leopard did not install is also part of the problem - did you use DU to check the disk and file permissions? That might account for the failed install.
The default install is to overwrite Tiger, which is most likely what you did. If you chose an Archive&Install, you have a good chance of recovering much of what you had in Tiger.

When installing Maverick on my 17" Macbook pro I got the message that my HD was damaged and couldn't be repaired. (not good news!!) I now can't restart without returning  to the Maverick setup and therefore returning to the same message. How do I abort the Maverick installation so that I can try to return to the previous OS so that I can try to recover/repair the HD

I have the same problem with my 2008 MacBook. Repair disk from disk utility says it was successful but the installer thinks it's groundhog day after a reboot. I also tried fsck -fy after booting in to a command mode and it came back clean but again the installer gives the same error message. It seems like a bit is stuck somewhere indicating my HD is bad when it isn't.
I had the latest version of Mountain Lion and have applied every upgrade up to then without issue.
Anyone find a solution yet without having to erase the entire disk and staring over?

  • Aborted install process while doing a 10.4.6 combo update

In another forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2193395#2193395) I'm helping someone who has problems with mail.
Cutting a long story short, he finally had to re-installed Mail from the orginal OSX DVD (intel Mini) and I need him to update now from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6 just for Mail.
He downloaded the combo update for his particular Mini and the process aborts at 9% installation repeatedly. Suggestions for a workaround will be highly appreciated.

    Hi Sijmons.
I was following that thread and I saw a couple of problems with the procedure followed there.
For one thing, a system update shouldn't be installed blindly. It'd be better to tell the user to read something like this beforehand:
    Installing software updates
Another problem is that the user mentioned that his/her "disks are 10.4.6" (yet his/her profile until that post said 10.4.5). Installing any update with the same version number as the original install disks is a mistake, combo or not:
Don't install older versions of Mac OS than what comes with your computer
    What's a "computer-specific Mac OS X release"?
Thus, after the update failure, the only safe thing to do would be to reinstall the system software using the original installation disks, as he/she did. If his/her install disks are indeed 10.4.6, nothing else can fix an "update" to the same version number. Fortunately, he/she had not been using the computer for too long, and this wasn't a big deal.

  • Dreamweaver CS3 installer aborts install

    Hi,
I have made 3 attempts at instlaling DW CS3, but each time
the installer quits and gives me the message that only the shared
components were installed. My computer meets the requirements for
DW CS3. There are two seemingly strange things about the install
    (1) it takes close to 30 minutes before I get the error message and
    (2) at this time, the progress bar shows about 95% complete, but
then jumps back to about 80% complete, stops and gives me the
mesage about only the shared components being installed.
My questions are: How can I get the trial version installed?
and second, why does the installer take 30 minutes to install just
the shared components? and, third, how can I just install DW
without the shared compoents as I do not need them and why take up
my harddrive space with components that I do not need?
    Thanks,

    Hello,
Your understanding is right, this is because your platform is not supported.
When you install SM on Solaris, you need SPARC64 architecture.
Please review the following system requirements.
Cisco Service Control Management Suite Subscriber Manager User Guide, Release 3.7.x
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/cable/serv_exch/serv_control/broadband_app/rel37x/smug/Installation_and_Upgrading.html
    CPU
•SUN SPARC, 64-bit, minimum 500 MHz (for Solaris)
•Intel processor, 32-bit or 64-bit, minimum 1 GHz (for Linux Red Hat)
The TimesTen DB installer checks this and generate the following errors
if the platform is not supported as you saw.
You appear to be trying to install on an unsupported OS.

  • Can't install Snow Leopard on MBP

Hi Community! Struggling with installing SL on my old MBP. I have family license and have installed SL on my iMac, no problem. I am now trying to install on my MBP. Initially the install disk loaded fine and but I didn't have enough memory. I did some housekeeping and tried again and all seemed to go well. I left the MBP installing but came back to find the disk spat out but it hadn't installed. I tried again but found that the aborted install had used up quite a bit of memory- more housekeeping! Tried again but the disk wouldn't load at all, after some spinning, it ejects. I have used Disk Utility to repair permissions, again no go.
Thinking there may be some corruption (don't actually know what I'm talking about), I thought I would do an archive and install of Leopard to give a clean sheet. This worked OK and I deleted previous systems to give required space. Tried SL install again, no go. It would not boot up off the SL install disk (restart whilst pressing C) the disk just spits out again (I restarted whilst it was spinning). I verified the install disk on my iMac, came out OK. I have repaired permissions from Leopard install disk Not sure what to do next. I have back ups on external drive, up to date. All precious stuff has been copied away.
Just as an aside, the MBP never worked with Time Machine, it "couldn't mount the disk image", this seemed odd (was hoping SL would sort that out...) but what do I know. Any suggestions gratefully received. Cheers!

First, note that memory means RAM. Storage is what you apparently were using up during your failed installs.
Apple issued many bad Sno disks; you may have one of them. Apple will exchange the disk for your. Note that sometimes they are bad only in the sense that they won't run properly on only some machines, but not on others.
Given your circumstances, and without exchanging the Disk, if you have access to a properly equipped second Mac (or PC in one case) that can read the install DVD, then you still have these install possibilities:
    1. Use [firewire target disk mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661].
    2. Use the [remote install method|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/21219.html].
    3. Clone the installer DVD to an external drive; attach it to your machine; and install using the clone.
    4. Borrow someone else's upgrade disk; it might work on your machine (no EULA problem since you have the right to install even on a borrowed disk under the circumstances).

  • Panther to leopard install

Have taken a G5 twin out of mothballs and tried to install leopard over panther - error message says no 10.4 or later detected and aborts install - so unable to make it to archive install option.
    Any suggestions please?
    Thank you

Leopard 10.5.x is supported in early G5 PowerPC computers.
If you have a retail full installer and not an upgrade disc which
may require a previous near-version of OS X to get there; and
do not have a machine-specific version of OS X that was made
to be used in only one series/model of computer, 10.5 can do it.
See: MacTracker for some handy details on each system.
http://mactracker.ca - this is a free downloadable database.
You may have to get another hard disk drive and ready that for
an all new installation of Leopard; and be sure there is enough
chip RAM installed in the computer to support Leopard well.
If there are two drive bays available, the new system should be
in a place of its own since the older apps and parts won't work
with the newer OS X; or some of them may be sketchy or odd.
Better to cut loose with the older stuff and if possible, you could
have that older system & its apps on a different drive; if you have
the original OS X installer discs and can maintain 10.3 correctly.
And if you do try the two OSX idea, note that some documents
will not like to be made in one version of an application then be
forced to adapt to the older version, since they don't do it well.
Plus, some applications may need to be reinstalled if they still
are Leopard capable, with password or serial number if they
are third party; these also don't like drag/drop moves.
With Panther 10.3.x, have you seen what the automatic
Software Updates selection offers to load, when you run
it? You could still get by for awhile with Panther 10.3.9 &
use a new Camino browser, without much pain. Be sure
you run 'repair disk permissions' in Disk Utility between
any/all system or software installations or updates.
{You may wish to start a new thread of your own so it
    will be seen as such, and you will see all new replies.}
Good luck in any event, & happy computing!

Quicktime failed to initialize (error -2093)
Quicktime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes.
When i try and re-install it i get this message:

    What can i do?

    hiya!
okay, let's first uninstall the existing itunes and quicktime installation (it may have been compromised by the aborted install). use the complete uninstall instructions on this document:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
... and if you run into difficulties on the uninstall, use the Cleanup Utility:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
then let's try the install again. if you run into the 1607 again, try the general advice on the first document i linked you to, and the Scenario One 1607-specific advice. (you're not displaying typical symptoms of a Scenario two.)

  • How long does the LV2009 full development suite usually take to install?

I have a Lenovo laptop with a Intel Centrino Duo T2400 1.83GHz CPU w/ 1GB of RAM and 15GB of free hard drive space available and it took about 5 hours to only get to part 15 of 44. Needless to say I aborted the install. When I checked my Hard Drive free space after the aborted install part 15 of 44 took up 13GB of my freee space. Now I am left with only a partial install and only 2GB of free space left on my hard drive. Based on past experience I know that Labview is not easy to remove from a system once installed.
Anyone have any idea why the install is taking so long for me or what I can do to fix my only partial install??

I installed LabVIEW 2009 on two computer's (I did skip several toolkits though) and I believe it took about an hour, two at the most. This was even doing it via a network install using distributions built by the NI License Manager.

The easiest way to create a response file is by starting the wizard, filing in the blanks on all pages and save the result before the wizard asks you to install. Just stop here.
