About Dense & Spare

Hi,
I am new to Hyperion Planning. Please anyone help me to explain the below things?
1) How Dense & Spares are storing in Cube(I have referred the ESSBASE guide, but difficult for me to understand the concept in depth)
My understanding:
        Spare - Index
        Dense - Data Blocks
What are the main difference between Index & Data blocks? Please explain...
While writing the calculation scripts, how to handle this?
Is there any book or document explain detail in about trouble shooting the calculation script with examples.  In C & C++ language, there is lot of trouble shooting book for understanding the syntax and  functions, is there any things is available for ESSBASE.
Thanks in advance

Hello,
the dense / sparse subject and its impact on calculation performance is too wide to answer in a forum. There are training courses and many documents on the internet that deal with this subject. There are also books for sale which cover this subject.
On both you can use a search engine for the internet.
Regards,
Philip Hulsebosch.

  • A few questions about the FCE interface

I'm new at FCE, but I've done video editing for a few years in Windows (Vegas Movie Studio mostly, it was pretty good but limited in the number of video and audio tracks). I've finally made the jump to Mac and I'm excited getting started. The ability to do keyframes and motion is outstanding and I can't wait to play with LiveType and Soundtrack.
There's a few things I'm not sure I understand about the FCE interface. I'm working on my first project and it's going to me mostly made up of short (4-10 second) video clips and still photos (with pan and zoom and some motion) and background music. I've done several of these in the past in other software, this project is my learning one for FCE.
However, I can't understand why some things happen they way they do. If I drag a clip or still from the bin to somewhere in the middle of my existing sequence where there are no items on the video track, it 'parts the seas', moving all video on all tracks to the right and cuts my audio track wide open leaving a huge gap to make room for the clip or still even if it has no audio. The same thing happens in reverse if I'm deleting a still or clip, it chops it out and scoots everything over. I think I want to manage my own gaps rather than FCE trying to manage it for me. Does this have something to do with ripple editing - something that I must not have learned in my Windows video editing experience?
I've ordered a few tutorial books based on recommendations in this forum, they're on their way. I didn't expect to be immediately proficient, but it seems I'm not understanding something fundamental about the interface.
There's other questions too, like when I move a video clip from one track to another (up or down, not left or right), why does it move the audio portion of that clip to another audio track? Sometimes it stomps on something I already had on that track. Can't I unlink those somehow?
When I bring two clips or stills together and attempt to overlap them (which I think should mean I'm doing some type of transition), it seems to just truncate one or the other. I suppose I just need to get used to that?
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
    iMac 20" intel   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

You need to get comfortable with targeting your tracks and, as mentioned, locking off tracks you don't want to affect.
You say you want to add a clip/still to the "middle" of a sequence ... I take it there are clips to either side of this spot that you don't want to affect. Then I would set In and Out (I and O) points in the timeline to define the space you want the clip to occupy. If you don't want audio to carry over, then lock off whatever audio tracks you have edited. Then do an Overwrite by either dragging the clip to the far right of the screen to get the Overwrite pop up or by using the F10 key.
The Delete key to the right of your keyboard (sometimes under the help key) does a ripple delete. The Delete key under the number keys (sometimes a backspace key) removes a highlighted portion of video without rippling the timeline.
If you lay in a new clip with audio and don't want to affect an existing track, target a separate set .. so if you have a clip on V1 with its audio on A1/A2 and you want to overwrite the video but add new audio, target V1 and A3/A4.
As to overlapping clips .. if you want to use transitions, overwrite your first clip. Overwrite the second right up against it .. don't try to overlap. Now select your transition and drop it down between the two clips. NOTE: FCE needs handles ... like about a spare 15 frames of info on both clips
I strongly reccomend Tom Wolsky's book on FCE. It has tutorials and is a great way to start. I've never used Vegas but FCE is a very deep program ... it takes time, practise and patience (and you online manual is a great resource too)

So to do an automatic goods issue in ECC, we need to enable a BAPI for batch determination.
Now we are contemplating of doing the goods issue in ECC manually.

  • Help on how to fix macbook pro 13inch 2010 (cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad)?

help on how to fix macbook pro 13inch 2010
Hi, I need some peoples help on fixing my laptop. I have a macbook pro 13 inch 2010 model, and it refuses to boot into either osx or windows. Every time I prevoiusly treid to boot into mac osx I got this error "panic (cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad)". there is an image below. and when I had treid to boot into windows (bootcamp) I got this error "A disk read error occured Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". I have treid to restart the computer and gotten both these errors agian. The strange things is this deosn't always happen, sometimes I don't get any errors, and it just has the apple logo whith the spinning loading thing happening below (I left this for an hour and it still kept spinning, and never loaded). Other times it just show white whith no errors but never loads, sometime it lets me alt to select which os to boot into (nether work), but other times it just freezes and shows a mouse cursor on the white background. it's not consistent.
Most recently it has a flashing folder on a white background. I treid inserting my osx disc and went into disc utility but it doesn't detect my hardrive. It may be a faulty hardrive or sata cable but I dont know (I have links below). I was recently (well for the first time), defragmenting my windows partition, it hit temparatures of 80-85C, and stayed at that for several hours throughout the defragmentation, would this have damaged it?
I have scoured the internet and found many people whith very similar problems to me but none whith the same, and A lot of people saying that if you get the error you should just use a time machine backup, the thing is I don't have a time machine backup. The internal hardrive I am currently using on my laptop is a seagate 640gb 5400rpm (it's not an apple harddrive). every thing else it standard, standard ram and no overclocking, I was running 10.6.8 snow leopard, and windows xp profesional 32bit (split 320gb each, whith about 10gb spare on each parttion).
It would be greatly appreiciated If any one could shed some light on what I should do. I need the laptop working whithin the week (for my tafe work), but If I have to reinstall the OS's and programs it could take a long0I have a lot of programs and that could take a month. not to mention The fact that the hardrive might be completly fine and it's just a faulty sata connection. but then would I still be getting an error if thats all thats wrong?. and if it is just the error is there anyway I can fix it whitout doing a fresh install, there a error reading document blow but I cannot make heads or tails of it. I also have almost no money to afford getting it fixed.
also one last thing, I stupitidely inserted my mac osx disc 95% of the way into my macs slot loading drive when it was powered down (off). when I turned it on it sucked it in fine, but would that have caused any damage to the disc or laptop (I cannot eject the disc to check)
I have images of many of the things I described below. So any suggestions.
I have also posted this on several other websiets if that helps)

The problem may be that your macbook is'nt set to 'mirror image' if you go into settings, onto 'displays' there should be an option within, once youre connected, to 'mirror image' if you check this box, then the problem should be sorted, if not then maybe a dodgy cable or adapter.

  • External drive filling up with TM

I set up TM a few days ago and have been very happy with it until tonight when I realised that my external disk is filling up very quickly. Let me explain...
I have a 320GB Lacie disk with about 300GB actually available to use. After my first TM backup I was left with about 100GB spare - plenty I thought. However, after checking tonight I see I only have 60GB spare and yet I've hardly touched the computer and certainly not created any large files, at this rate the drive will be full in another week or so.
I'm guessing that in order for TM to go back in hourly increments it's saving duplicates of various files and this is what is filling up the drive. In the meantime I've turned TM off to only do manual backups a lot less regularly, but this is sort of defeating the purpose.
I have a folder on my external HD for every hourly backup TM has done, is it safe delete all but the most recent backup folder and start afresh?

OK, the Windows partition is now excluded. I've erased the disk and am going to start again. I've attempted to alter the TM .plist script as outlined here to alter the hourly back ups to daily...
'If you think Time Machine backs up too often (or not often enough) for your liking, navigate into /System » Library » LaunchDaemons. There you'll find a file named com.apple.backupd-auto.plist. Open it in your favorite text editor, and look for this section:
    <key>StartInterval</key>
    <integer>3600</integer>
Change the 3600 number to some other time interval in seconds, and you'll have changed Time Machine's backup interval.'
But I don't have permissions to alter and re-save the file even after tweaking permissions in the Get Info window. I think I'll leave TM to do it's hourly and then weekly archive an reassess the situation after that.

  • Photo iCloud optimisation not working.

Hi, here's the scenario. I had 270 ish photos viewable on my ipad while using the optimise with iCloud storage feature and the storage on my iPad was being optimised. I had roughly about 9GB spare . A few days ago I deleted all my iCloud photos and videos and reuploaded them again (wanted to manually remove duplicate photos). Now when I view my iPad on iTunes the spare storage space is about 3GB. In the settings I had optimised between iCloud and iPad checked and I've disabled and enabled this feature a few times incase that was the problem, unfortunately though the storage no longer seems to be optimised and now there's much less space on my iPad. If anyone has any ideas to fix the optimisation that would be great as it's always nice to have space to stockpile movies for a long journey, thanks.

Toggling the setting won't help, optimisation takes place when the items are first added or when you start to run out of space on your device. Are you also aware that if you open a photo once it's been optimised it will download the full resolution version which will stay that way until you start to run out of space.

  • Has my iphoto got too full?

    Hi everyone. Mac newbie here!
Trying to buy iphoto book of 80 pages (111mb). 2 things happen when I try. Sending book fails repeatedly just before completion. Very noisy fan (on new 'refurbished' macbook) when iphoto is open.
My Iphoto has 18,500 files in it. (mainly photos) Should I remove the older files to permanent alternative storage? And if so how do I do it? I am not very techie.

Hi Thanks for your speedy response! Relieved to know I can still take a few more pics before I have to worry about removing the old ones, thanks for that.
In About my Mac it says in Hardware the memory is 2 GB. Serial ATA is 232GB. I have about 100GB spare.
Checked the Activity Monitor and iphoto CPU was really high compared to other running programs such as Mail so I shut the whole thing down and tried again to send the book with a much lower CPU. It got as far as a window saying 'transferred 111mb of 111mb' but stuck there for several minutes before a window saying something like 'error transferring files, check your connection and retry'. Fan behaving normally so I guess that was an improvement but still cant send the book.
We are on a satellite for broadband as we are too far from a phone exchange to get regular broadband, but usually if the signal drops you get a message saying it has dropped.

  • What is the max HDD for my model iMac?

    Hi
I have a 2006 (last of the white plastic gen) iMac 24" 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo. Came with 1GB RAM, which I upgraded to the maximum possible of 3GB RAM.
It also came with a 250GB HDD which I would like to upgrade. I know Apple won't do this and I need to go to a reseller/partner, but I am getting conflicting messages about what is possible.
One says I can go to 2TB but another tells me that the maximum drive size I can put in is 750GB. Apart for the physical size of the drive, I can't see why there would be a limit to the size of drive I can install. Don't they all have the same interface, power consumption and heat output?
I would have thought that a 2TB drive from 2011 would be smaller than a 250GB drive from 2005/6.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Barbara
    I have two externals already:
    1. Lacie Rugged which I am using for Time Machine
    2. Lacie 4Big which houses my iTunes library
I think that I will move my iPhoto library to the Lacie 4Big which has about 200GB spare freeing up 175GB on my internal. If successful, I shouldn't need to replace the new internal. I was always a bit worried about moving stuff from the internal, which seems quite reliable. I have had 2 Maxtor drives fail on me in the past and lost much of my iTunes library. So when it comes to seven years and 23k+ of family photos I am very cautious.
The Lacie is built in RAID 5 so I hope I can fix it even in the event of a drive failure.
    Thanks

  • Installing internal storage device

    Hello all,
Some time over the next few days I will be collecting and installing a 160GB Ultra ATA (internal) drive for my aging Quicksilver (specs below). The old HD is down to about 7GB spare. It is intended to configure the existing and new drives as master/slave.
I’ve found the KB documents relating to installation etc and have no queries in that respect. Additionally, a search of this forum turned up a number of helpful articles, however, one otherwise unanswered aspect upon which I am looking for further information is the possible uses as to which the new drive arrangement can be put.
At this stage I’m considering keeping the boot volume on the original HD and using the new drive simply for storage, i.e. not installing an OS on it.
    Questions:
    1. What are the pros and cons in making the new drive bootable, bearing in mind that I have a Tiger disc, a MacBook Pro, and a bootable clone on a LaCie FW drive if ever the need for external booting arises?
    2. Is there any point in installing (or cloning) the boot volume/all the old stuff onto the new drive and wiping the old one, using that for storage?
    3. Would it be practical to house the existing applications iTunes/iPhoto on the old drive and move their respective libraries onto the new drive? If so, how is that most easily achieved?
And if anyone has other suggestions as to making the most out of the drive arrangement, please feel welcome to add them.
    Cheers,
    Dennis

    Hi-
1- Simply stated, allows for another boot volume should the need for it ever arise. Having a bootable clone already, it may not be necessary, if you are comfortable with your current backup scheme. Some (including myself) like to keep multiple boot volumes. I maintain three of each OS (4 different OS's).
Another pro; new drives are often much better performers than older drives, and having the system on the new drive could help system performance.
Con would be loss of space on the hard drive due to OS files. Some may say multiple boot volumes are confusing, yet another negative....
2-Only if the old drive provides adequate space for intended use. Again, if the old drive is relatively antiquated, cloning to the new drive, and using it for boot volume could increase performance.
3- Very practical, and helpful with regards to maintaining necessary free space on the boot volume for proper system performance.
It is as easy as moving (not copy) the iTunes library to the non boot drive, and then, setting the iTunes preferences for library location to the new drive. See this article for specifics. This article provides additional insight.
As with iTunes, iPhoto libraries can also be kept on a separate volume. This User Tip provides instruction. For additional insight, this article is helpful.
I keep my libraries on separate volumes, and try to maintain only the OS and applications on the boot volume. For backup, this requires two backup volumes, but I do feel that it provides for the best system performance, and helps keep drives from filling too fast.

  • Reduce Calc Time

    Afternoon everyone,
We load data into our cube monthly, and when running the calc on the database it can take between 2/3 days to complete. I appreciate that calc time can be determined by a wide variety of factors (number of dense/spare dims/members etc) - but looking at things from a system resource view:
    The server has 8 CPU's.
With total memory = 4194303 (according to server information within Application Manager)
When calcing, approx 1500000 of memory is used.
The start of the calc script defines the following parameters: 'SET CALCPARALLEL 4; SET UPDATECALC OFF;'
Would increasing the 'SET CALCPARALLEL' parameter from 4 to 6 be a viable approach to trying to reduce calc time (especially given the amount of available resource on the server)??
The server wont be used for anything else during the calc.

    CL wrote:
Are you running 64 bit or 32 bit Essbase?
32 bit maxes out at 4 CPUs for parallel calc; 64 bit can go to 8.
You might want to look at the number of task dimensions set for parallel calculations.
    See: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/html_esb_techref/calc/set_calctaskdims.htm
And your calculator cache is going to impact parallel calcs as well.
All of this can go up in smoke if you have calculations that require Essbase to calculate in serial, such as cross dimensionals.
There are lots of other possibilities re performance.
    1) Could the SAN/local drives be faster?
    2) Do you need to calc the whole database (I have no idea what your db is, only that you mention a monthly calc -- is it for just one month?)
    3) Partitioning the db by month<--This is probably a really good place to look although nothing is free.
    4) Going to ASO
    There are others as well.
I appreciate that thie above four thoughts are beyond your question, they're just food for thought.
    Regards,
Cameron LackpourASO should be an option. It is much much faster rollup than BSO.

  • DVD SP started crashing

When burning a DVD, after the muxing, DVD SP 3.0.2 has been repeatedly crashing. I have not had this problem before. It didn't help to fix my drives so they have about 20 spare gb each. I've considered reinstalling the software, but I have the same problem when I open up my backup of DVD SP, which is on a backup partition.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

After quite a bit more trial and error (including use of DiskWarrior which didn't help in this particular problem), I was able to work around the problem.
The crashing of DVD SP happened right at the end of the muxing. It seemed to be due to a bit of video I encoded of a black title, which I used repeatedly as a spacer between the four sections of the video track. I replaced these short sections of the timeline with new black titles (which had a dark object at the edge so they were not perfectly black). Then the crashing stopped, and I was able to finish the project to disc.

  • Java 1.5 on Mac G5, Leopard 10.5.8

Just installed Britannica Ultimate Reference Suite 2010 DVD (encyclopedia), but it won't start apparently due a Java issue.
I have the latest MacOS which is able to run on PowerPC machines (Leopard 10.5.8)
I have the latest Apple software upgrade installed "Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5" (1.0)
The error message I get is
    "Cannot Launch Java application
Uncaught exception in main method: java.lang.AbstractMethodError: org.apache.xerces.dom.DeferredElementImpl.getTextContent()Ljava/lang/String;"
    followed by Quit box.
There is some reference to needing Java 1.5, but I can't find that anywhere and I suspect it may not be available for PowerPC G5? - in which case I guess I have to wait till I can afford a new Intel Mac
This is all in spite of the Mac and Universal logos appearing on the box.
Any clues or work-arounds would be appreciated.
+(I have also sent a message to Britannica tech support but no response yet.)+

    Thanks Carolyn,
    No response from Britannica yet.
Took your hint about disk space. My startup disk is a 150GB and before installation there was about 9GB spare; after about 3GB. It full-installed OK. I have some external drive space so I shifted some files and now there is 15.7GB spare. However the fault still persists.
On reading the Britannica MacOS requirements in detail, it says:
    MacOS 10.4.x or 10.5.x w/ Java 1.5 / Mac 10.6.x +(10.5.8, unknown Java)+
CPU Type and Speed: PowerPC G5 or Intel Core processor +(PowerPC G5)+
Hard Drive Space: 1.96GB (4.5GB for full installation) +(9GB before)+
    Memory 512MB (1GB recommended) +(I have 3GB)+
    Graphics: Any Graphics card (yes)
    Audio: Any sound card (yes)
    Internet: recommended (yes)
On reading the installation instructions in detail:
DVD in drive, double click etc.
"This program requires Java 1.5 or later installed to work properly. You can download the correct version here: http://www.java.com.en/download/manual.jsp"
    - Java Downloads for All Operating Systems
However for Mac, it just links you back to Apple's support page and tells you to use 'Software Update" which I had done anyway!
I haven't managed to discover what version of Java I have so there's no progress!

  • This backup is too large for the backup volume - ridiculous backup size

I have had big problems with Time Machine today. I have been successfully using it for 2 months now. I have about 30Gb spare on my iMac hard drive (out of 233Gb) and my Time Machine uses 195Gb out of 466Gb available.
However, today I have lost all my Time Machine history except for one backup made this morning, and I am now getting an error message saying:
    "Time Machine Error
This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 161061280.0 GB but only 270.4 GB are available.
To select a larger volume, or make backup smaller by excluding files, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine"
Clearly the required backup volume is wrong - that's 161,000.0TB!!!
The same message has come up 3 times now.
Can anyone help/advise on what to do next?

    Thanks Peggy,
I re-indexed Spotlight and ran Time Machine again, but got exactly the same error message and the same massive storage required.
I've opened Console as you suggested and these are a set of the messages from one back-up attempt yesterday (Console doesn' show anything earlier than 17.32 yesterday - but the problem started earlier than that I believe):

  • Maps 3.01 and low memory

I had to reset my N97 to factory standards and I uninstalled the latest version of maps .I think it is 3.03. Now I am trying to reinstall it, but it tells me I don't have enough memory. I have 14.3mb free in phone memory. is there a way to uninstall the 3.01 version? I have tried and failed. I don't know what else to delete.
    Thanks, kim
    Solved!

If you've done a reset I would have expected about 45meg spare on C ! You should be able to remove maps from Installed applications in the Application manager, would also recommend you remove any other app installed on C before loading the latest maps, which should be 3.04 !!
Before doing this try soft reset dial*#7370# followed by 12345, phone will reset nad you should have over 40 meg on C (just backup contacts and calender first NOTHING ELSE !!)
    Good Luck
If I have helped at all, a click on the White Star is always appreciated :
