About developing portal server

Hi
I am setting up portal service for my university. I am using Sun ONE Portal Server 6.0. Any body who has done such a task before and willing to share me experience is grately welcomed.
Especially I need help in developing user-defined container channel and inserting customised content in it.
Thanks,

I strongly reccomend NOT using 6.0. The latest version is 6.3. There are lot of bug fixes and enhancements between 6.0 and 6.3.
Also, here's a link to a Portal server forum.
http://swforum.sun.com/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=80
Hopefully, you'll get your questions answered there.
Good Luck,

  • About developing Portal applucation...

    Hello sirs,
I am a beginner in Portal development. I am now working with "<b>Sneak Preview SAP NetWeaver 2004 Slim Edition</b>" Can i create a simple portal application using this version? or should i have to download any other version of  netweaver?
How can we develop Portal application in Netweaver developer Studio available with Sneak Preview? Can you please forward any links of the tutorials about configuring a sample application in netweaver developer studio?
What is Portal Content Studio is it an IDE like netweaver?
    Kindly help
    regards,
    Sudheesh

    Hi Sudheesh,
    > Can i create a simple portal application
    > using this version?
    Yes.
    > What is Portal Content Studio
    > is it an IDE like netweaver?
NetWeaver is NOT an IDE. NetWeaver is the name of the whole actual SAP platform. NWDS is the Java IDE (NetWeaver Developer Studio).
The portal content studio is the main place within the portal to create Roles, Worksets, Pages, iView etc. See http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/df/bedcb2076511d7b84500047582c9f7/frameset.htm
Within NWDS, you have wizards to create a Portal Application (File - New - Project - Portal Application).
    Hope it helps

  • Confusion about development vs server (client) runtimes

I built some reports using Crystal XI for a client at their offices.
They asked that I write a program to help automate the running of those reports. They don't have visual studio, so I developed the program on my laptop. I have visual studio 2008. I also recently installed the trial version of crystal 2008.
The reports are not embedded in the app. The app is simply there to run reports that exist on the server where the same report must be generated multiple times using different parameters.
The code in the app which references the report looks like so:
    CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument report = new CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument();
    report.Load(Properties.Settings.Default.ReportPath + Properties.Settings.Default.CTIReportName);
My project of course has a reference to the crystal assemblies, which I assume were installed with the trial version of crystal 2008.
Trying to run the application on their box results in the failure to load crystaldecisions.windows.forms, etc, which I suppose is because their assemblies are not the same version as mine.
Is there any way to get this to work, or does my development machine have to have the same version of crystal installed as their production machine? I'm thinking the best way might be for me to install visual studio on their box just to re-add the referenecs and compile the app, but having to do this seems silly.

I discovered that the downloadable Crystal XI R2 demo has the same assemblies as Crystal XI R1 used by my client, so this solved my issue.

  • How to compare two portal server settings

    Hi,
How to compare two portal server configuration settings? For example I want to compare sandbox with development portal server their entire configuration set up and settings details comparision. Is there any option/solution for this.

There is no standard or OOTB solution for comparing the configuration of 2 portal .. atleast to my knowledge. If you can specify which configuration you want to focus .. may be I can provide some tips n tricks.

  • New To WL Portal Server - Please Help!!

    Hi-
I practially started reading about WL Portal server this morning and I
do not even have an installation accesssible to me. But, I need to
figure out a quick thing and I am pretty sure that it is staraight
forward, but due to my ignorance with WL Portal server & portlets, I
am posting for some getting help and direction..
I have 2 portlets (PortletA and PortletB) on a page. Portlet A has
links (news.html, aboutus.html etc). Once the user clicks on one of
the links on PortletA, the contents of the links should be displayed
    in PortletB. (Similar to frames)...
Can some one please point me in the right direction, how to do it? I
    will keep looking.
Thanks for your time and help!
    Prasad

Your problem lies with the code. You have tried to use the System.setSecurityManager in the applet. Applet unlike standalone application run inside an environment such as a browser, therefore it does not allow to create the security manager. If u do not use System.setSecurityManager(new RMISecurityManager()) u will get the RMI classloader disabled error at the client side. So the solution to this is add the setSecurityManager to the server program

  • Where can I find a portal server for JAVA development?

    Hi, everyone:
I am looking a portal server which can be used under Windows envorinment and related development environment (toolkit or SDK).
I have done some search through IBM and SUN's web site and I can not find any portal servers that running on Windows plarform for download and related Windows development (toolkit or SDK).
Where can I find some trial versions of portal servers running under Windows and related Windows development (toolkit or SDK)? I want to use JAVA to development portal, so Microsoft does not provide any useful information.
I just want to use basic functions of portal servers so I think other portal servers other than IBM and SUN's can also be used, maybe an open source one can be used. But I do not know what are they and where can I get them. :-)
So, anyone can help me to introduce a portal server that can meet my needs. Or provide me information where to download IBM or SUN's portal server running under Windows and related Windows development (toolkit or SDK).
    Best regards,
    George

I just want to use portal server and deploy some
applications written in JAVA. Have I made myself
    understood?
    Still not clear.
Do you want a server application that deploys software. For example you create a game. Someone logs into your "portal server" and downloads the game from that?
Or do you just want to know how to package a java app that you have already written, and then put it on a CD so someone can install that on their computer?

  • Message from the LCCS Team about the Developer Portal

    Hi LCCS Developers,
We wanted to give you a heads up that the charts (the ones you can find in the LCCS Developer Portal) will be taking a few weeks off (end of the year break type of thing).
This will allow us to work out some kinks (related to performance, on our side, in delivering those charts to you) before bringing them back early next year (February timeframe).
Here is what you will see in their place starting December 9th at 5PM PT:
We thank you for your understanding.

  • What are the major logic steps of WL Portal Server process a portal request

    Hi,
I comes from IBM and we provided a product to monitor most types of J2EE App Server about transactions and performance.
we will monitor WebLogic Portal Server in next release.
So would you please tell me:
How Weblogic Portal handles a page request from browser, what are the major logic steps that a page requests are fulfilled, which areas in Weblogic Portal are most likely to cause response time problem. For example, We monitor WebSphere Portal Server as the following major steps:
Portal Page loading, Model building, Page rendering, portlet action, etc....
we look forward to get your developer helps since we cann't find related documents over your website.
    Thank you very much

WebLogic Portal, if Desktop enabled, it will render from Desktop->Portal->Books->Pages-->Portlets. You can get these information from WebLogic E-Docs.

  • Process.conf file not found after installing Sun One Portal Server 6.0

This extract is from the Sun One Portal Server development guide for logging error or logs in log file. This says that to generate the log, entry should be done to enable logging in process.conf file. I could not find any such file after installing Sun One Portal Server 6.0.
    Any help will be appreciated...
Reporting Errors to the Robot Log File
When problems occur, robot application functions should return an appropriate response status code (such as REQ_ABORTED), and they should also log an error inthe error log file.
To use the error-logging functionality, you must include the file log.h in thesdk/robot/include/libcs directory. After you have ensured that log.h exists in the correct place, you can use the cslog_error macro to report errors. The prototype is in the following format:
cslog_error(int n, int loglevel, char* errorMessage)
The first parameter is not currently used (may be used in the future) You can pass
    this as any integer.
The second parameter is the log level. When the log level is less than or equal to the log level setting in the file process.conf, the error message is written in the robot.log.

Since removing the log settings from magnus.conf failed to fix the problem, the log settings are probably not the source of the problem.
Did anything else - e.g. ColdFusion configuration changes - occur at about the same time you changed the log settings?

  • How to add properties to Channels in Portal Server 7

    hi,
When in the Portal Server Console in the Manage Containers and Channels section I can easily edit the properties for the configured items. Now I want to add a property to, let's say, the SearchProvider or the preconfigured Search of the DeveloperSample portal. How would I go about that? PS6 had a nice big "New" button on the property pages to add properties, how can I do the same with PS7?
What I want to do is add a property to the Search that I can then access from within the jsp files, but that can easily be set and changed from the server console.
    any hints are appreciated ;)
    thanks!

The "New" button was removed from the UI for the console in PS 7 to avoid confusion caused by adding properties to channels that are then not referenced by the code for the channel. The only way that a named property can be used is if the property is referenced by the code for the Provider, e.g., in the Java code or in the JSP. When the code is modified to start referencing a new property, the intent is that the developer also modify the <Provider> definition in the display profile to also list a default value for that property. Then the property will show up in the property edit page for channels created from that Provider.
Editing of the Provider definition requires actually editing the display profile XML.
    HTH.

  • Anyone Decipher the "portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_1_288_200__0_43" string

We have the need to use strictly servlets in our development. The only problem in our environment plumtree does not see or transform code written to the Java getWriter().
So we have to figure out how to set our own gateway. We almost have it figured out any help will be appreciated.
    <form METHOD="get" ACTION="http://dk-gms4s11:8080/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_1_288_200__0_43/http%3A%2F%2Flocalhost%3A9080%2Ftest%2FsetPrefs" name="form288">
This is what we are creating manually inside the servlet. Here is our breakdown of the string starting at PTARGS_0
    _1 = is either the PT-User-ID or PT-Content-Mode, _288 = PT-Gadget-ID, _200 = PT-Community-ID, _0 = NOT KNOWN, _43 = PT-Class-ID.
The rest of the information is easily found and can be formulated. Ok lets see what others have to say, how about PT Developer support.???????????????????????????????????

Have you considered using EDK to build your link?
Here is example, albeit in .NET.
    IPortletContext ptContext = PortletContextFactory.CreatePortletContext(Request, Response);IPortletRequest ptRequest = ptContext.GetRequest();string url = ptContext.GetRemotePortalSession().GetPortletManager().GetPortletInstance(ptRequest.GetPortletID()).CreateGatewayLink(ptRequest.GetCommunityID(),"appdir/somepage.aspx");...

  • Multiple portal server instances

    Hello,
I have one solaris box with JES 2005Q4 installed. I need to set up portal application development environment for multiple developers. I'm thinking about having multiple portal server instances. Is this configuration possible? Should I create multiple directory server and access manager instances as well or is it possible use one with multiple configuration instances?

Installing multiple instances of portal is only possible if you are installing in a Solaris 10 Whole-Root Zone. Create a new zone for each developer and then install all of the necessary JES components in each zone. This includes Directory, Access Manager, Application Server, and Portal.
