About maintenance windows and client restart settings
Scenario:
I have an application which is configured so that ConfigMgr Client will force a restart after the installation. This application is going to be deployed to a collection of computers which are also members of another collection that has maintenance window
of 3 hours configured. The default client settings for all the computers have been configured so that users are notified about possible restart for 1440 minutes (24h).
When the deployment is made:
If there are logged on users (on the desktop or locked screen), will the software just install in the 3 hour maintenance window and notify the user about the reboot for 24h after the installation?
If there are not logged on users will it install and reboot the computer?
How this kind of thing should be configured so that the computers will reboot in the maintenance window if they automatically do not with these settings (if or if not there are logged on users on the computers) ?
So I tested this:
User logged on during the MW -> Software installation starts at the maintenance window but asks for the reboot from the user so no go here
User not logged on during the MW -> Software installs and reboots straight away
Solution I'm thinking:
Client Settings Collection that includes all the Maintenance Window Collections and I shall deploy different Client settings (where the reboot time is less than the actual MW) to that collection. This could be also handled with "Install only when user is
not logged on" for the application's deployment type but then again I don't think you can do that kind of setting for software updates or do you?

Maintenance Windows and Installation Deadline
I know this has been discussed many times in the past, but I wanted to clarify in my mind what I think happens.
I have a maintenance window on a collection that is daily between 3:30am and 5:30am. I create a deployment for software updates with an available time at 2:00am. I specify the installation deadline in the deployment for 3:00am.
In the Deadline behavior (user experience) I do not have either option checked (Software updates installation and System restart). So, my MW will not be ignored.
With these settings, the needed updates will be downloaded, but not installed until the start of the maintenance window at 3:30am. (in essence, the deadline should be "before" the MW if I want them to install at the next MW).
Thanks!I did:

Firefox does not open more than one window. I can open plenty of tabs, but not more than one window. Upon closing firefox and trying to restart the browser will not open and needs to be closed through windows task manager. Upon trying to re-open Firefox I receive the 'oops this is embarassing , firefox cannot re-open your tabs" message. When I click on "new session" the bookmarks do not load. It is becoming very frustrating as I am a student and often do lots of research on the web while using lots of open windows.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.

Question about the "Windows and Arch Dual Boot" wiki
I've been reading this wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Win … _Dual_Boot to get a better understanding of what I need to do to install Arch along side of my XP installation and there's one point that I don't understand. Here it is
It is important to note that there is a 1024 cylinder limit with some older BIOSs. This means that the BIOS cannot access things beyond the 1024th cylinder (about 8.5GB), so the /boot partition should be in the first 8.5GB (space before Windows partition).
How does one go about getting the /boot partition created during the installation of Arch to install in the first 8.5g? I have installed Arch in Virtualbox twice so far just so that I'm familiar with the procedure and I can't see anything in the installation where I can do this.
There's one other item that is not clear to me as I've seen conflicting information on it. If I do create a seperate "/boot" partition for Arch, do I need to make it "bootable"during the installation? At this point I don't think that I do.
My understanding of installing to be able to dual boot is that I only need to install Grub to "Sda" and of course edit the grub menu to add the information needed for XP. Is this enough?
Thanks for any help.Yes, you install grub to sda (master boot record), and add the entry for Windows. In the step where you partition the harddrive, you can choose where to create it. Actually it may not be that much of a problem anymore, my boot is on the third partition, after ~15 GB. You can forget about the bootable flag when using grub, it does not care.

New to Apple, questions about using Windows, and other things
Hello all,
Today is my first day as an Apple owner. It's funny because I'm also a MCSE, MCSA, and MCP.
I purchased a 24" iMac, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, and 1TB Hard Drive.
I want to use Windows on my Mac so that I don't have to keep switching over to my PC. My main reason for using Windows is so that I can continue to enjoy my PC Games... mostly racing and D&D games.
So my question is... how does Windows run on bootcamp? Can I still use all of my USB controllers (like my steering wheels, joysticks, etc?)
I really havent even turned on my iMac... been too amazed at just looking at it for the first day (and also rearranging my home office).
I really just want to know from those of you who have PCs AND Macs, if you still find yourself having to go back to your PC because of incompatibilities or performance issues on the iMac?Using BootCamp, your Windows experience is no different than if running it on a similarly configured PC. If you went with a VM running under Mac OS X (like VMWare or Parallels), there are a number of differences. However, using BootCamp you have a Mac-branded PC.
I'd point out that people have been dual-booting operating systems in this fashion for decades. Windows has no obvious in-built support for doing so, but other operating systems (like Linux, FreeBSD, etc.) have always very clearly and explicitly supported dual-booting (on Macs and regular PCs) from the get go. -

Maintenance Windows Set to Use UTC Time Actually Using Local Time on Client
Hey All -
When patching servers last month, we ran into an issue on a couple of collections. This month, it's occurring on all of them so far.
The Issue
We have about 40 collections for various server groups. Each has a single maintenance window set for roughly a 4 hour window using UTC time.
When advertising a task sequence (or something else) to run only inside of the window, it fails. Examining the execmgr.log shows the error: "CExecutionRequest::The program may never run because of Service Window restrictions."
If I open SCCM Client Center, connect to one of the systems, and view Service Windows, I see that they are set, but were set using the hours I set but as if I did not choose UTC when I did. We are in CST which is a 5-06 hour difference therefore it
fails to deploy.
Only Fix So Far
The only fix found so far is to delete the maintenance window and re-create it using the exact same settings. After this is done and policy refreshes, Client Center shows the windows correctly.
The problem with the above fix is that at some point, they seemingly are being corrupted again as some which were fixed last month seem to must be re-created again this month.

Commit changes at deadline or during a maintenance window (requires restarts)?
What happens in an application deployment if I uncheck "Commit changes at deadline or during a maintenance window (requires restarts)"? If I have an application deployed to a collection with a maintenance window with a scheduled to be available
now with an installation deadline of one week, what would happed? What about if the application was deployed to a collection that did not have a maintenance window and there were no maintenance windows defined in any other collection the member clients
were in?This is for Embdedded devices, like ThinClients.
That means write filter commits either at deadline or during a maintenance window.
Your application still installs as you schedule it, available now and install week from now. If you have maintenance window and selected to not install or reboot outside of maintenance window, then everything happens within maintenance window. If you don't
check that box for write filter, then your app or setting you have just pushed does not get saved when device is rebooted.
Same scenario with no maintenance windows. If you don't have maintenance window then your app downloads and installs as you schedule the dates. Write filter would not commit these changes and everything would go away after reboot. -
Maintenance Windows - When a client belongs to more than one collection
Hi,
I am a little confused with maintenance windows as I have never had to use them before. I have client that belongs to Collection A with no maintenance window, and Collection B with a maintenance window. I typically push out apps during
the day (after they have been tested) so I never use maintenance windows. I am deploying an application to Collection A (no MW), but it shows in the status that it is waiting for a maintenance window. I assumes it's in this state due to me creating Collection
B with a maintenance window because I need to push something out this weekend and can only perform this from 10pm to 2am. If you are deploying an app to a collection, shouldn't look at the maintenance window for THAT collection, instead of
looking at all the NW for collections a client is added to? Is there anyway around this?
Thanks!Maintenance Windows are applied to and enforced by the client agent itself. The client enforces the MWs on any and all activity it performs regardless of collection targeting. In fact, clients don't know anything about collections at all.

SCCM fails to deploy Patches to client with in the maintenance windows.
Hi,
I am new to Patchng through SCCM just 7 months of experience.
I deploy the patches regular month basis as microsoft release the patches every month. till now the patch deployment was happening smoothly, but from last month i am facing issue like the SCCM failed to push the patches with in the provided maintenance window.
even if the maintenance window over client will not get install.
i have checked the enforcement status report for the same collection which i deployed, the status is always downloading updtaes.
We have collection called Workstation and servers, both the collections compliance is less like 20% or lesser than that.
Arround 800 Workstations deployed and given deadline 10 days. with suppressed reboot.
Arround 70 Servers deployed with with automatic reboot via Maintenance window.
deadline to install is 1 hour ahead of maintenance window.
It would be great if any one suggest the solution to make software update deployment through SCCM with in the maintenance window.Vista is not a supported OS for Acrobat XI Pro.

Maintenance Windows - Scheduled Reboot Sleep/Hibernate
Given an appropriately scheduled maintenance window and a properly configured set of client settings (computer restart), what is the expected behavior for a client computer that enters standby/hibernate during the countdown and doesn't resume until after
it has ended?
I have been running a few tests in my environment and I'm finding that clients resuming from standby/hibernate are being forced to reboot immediately. Sometimes before I am able to hit ctrl+alt+delete and login.
Is this expected?Is this expected?
I think this is expected. More details from Rebootcoordinator.log would be helpful.

CM12 SP1 CU1 - CM12 R2 - Maintenance Windows
Hi guys, I'm getting slowly ready to upgrade production to R2 and I just want to double check that I understand this right since I missed to observe this during my lab tests.
I currently have a lot of MWs set in 2012 SP1. All of them are now set with past dates.
If I was to upgrade today, they will convert to All Deployments maintenance windows, is that correct?
As a result of that, systems that are pending reboot because of software update installation
(software updates are allowed to install but not reboot outside of MW as per deployment settings) will not reboot.
Also, I found this in documentation but it is not clear to me.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712696.aspx#BKMK_MaintenanceWindow
It talks about software updates installation when general and software update maintenance windows are configured.
What about reboots?
If I have general and software updates maintenance windows configured: General for 24 hours and Software Updates for 4 hours on the same date what happens to:
a) Software Updates deployment with settings to install outside MW but reboot within MW?
I guess that it will install on the deadline I've scheduled outside of Software Updates MW but will reboot when Software Updates MW starts, is that correct?
Plan for a Software Updates Maintenance Window
Starting in System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager, you can add a maintenance window dedicated for software updates installation. This lets you configure a general maintenance window and a
different maintenance window for software updates. When a general maintenance window and software updates maintenance window are both configured, clients install software updates only during the software updates maintenance window. For more information about
maintenance windows, see How to Use Maintenance Windows in Configuration Manager.Your current maintenance windows will convert to all deployment maintenance windows. You must configure your software update ones separately. Your systems will not reboot until the maintenance window opens up, that is if you did not configure
reboots outside of maintenance windows.
Your software updates will install at any time because you allowed it outside of maintenance windows. Your software updates that are pending reboots will stay pending until the maintenance window opens and allows the reboot.
It looks like you are spot on.

Report on next effective maintenance window
Hi all
I'm having a problem with this custom function/report posted on TechNet while back for ConfigMgr 2007
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/7870.sccm-2007-create-report-of-upcoming-maintenance-windows-by-client.aspx
I've made the needed changes according to this blog post:
https://sccmfaq.wordpress.com/2013/08/22/sccm-2012-show-next-effective-maintenance-window/
..but when using maintenance windows that occurs for example 1st tuesday of every 1 months, the function returns the date week ahead. For example now (on 26th of Feb) next maintenance window should be on Tuesday March 3rd, but instead the report is showing
Tuesday March 10th.
Any help on modifying the function would be appreciated, I saw that there comments on the original post about the recurrence type 4 (monthly by weekday as noted here https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc143300.aspx) not working correctly in the function.
Ideal solution for me would be that the clients report their next maintenance windows through hardware inventory, but I don't think that's possible.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!Hi,
I recommend you post this question in SQL forum as modifying the function is very complicated.

Windows Update Group Policy Settings?
I browsed through SCCM 2012 documentation for an answer of what to set in a GPO when wanting to use SCCM 2012 SP1 to handle updates.
At the moment I have:
WSUS/Reporting pointing to wsus server and its appropriate ports
Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation: Enabled
All signed updates from intranet Microsoft Updates: Enabled
Configure Automatic Updates: Enabled
Configure automatic Updating - 4 Auto download and schedule the install
Scheduled install day: Every Friday
Scheduled install time: 21:00
Enabling Windows Update Power Management to auto wakeup the system to install Enabled
No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations: Enabled
Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installation: Disabled
I didn't see any hint, perhaps it is there and I missed it, on what might be the prescribed settings for a GPO.
What is happening is Windows 8ish is drawing a band across the screen and reporting that your computer needs to reboot; and then reboots. From what I could tell in the WindowsUpdate.log file is that round the time it was observed rebooting smsexec
requested a reboot. But oddly I also saw in the Windows Update log was a reboot was scheduled to expire on the 26th, two days after the observed behavior and I also saw that other reboot requests either expired or had been scheduled.
What I have recently done to various Windows Update deployments was to remove the check boxes for Deadline behavior to prevent Software Updates and System restarts outside the Maintenance Window and also checked Device restart behavior
Suppress system restart on the following devices Servers and Workstations.
At the moment I would like to figure out what the GPO settings should be and also how to determine what had requested reboot and when and if the reboot actually happened.
Thanks! This blog series by Jason should help you with that (it's still applicable):
