About n1000v with port channel
there is a n1000v connected to multiple upstream switches in the customer's production environment.
the following is from the Cisco Nexus 1000V Interface Configuration Guide, Release4.2(1)SV2(2.1).
You use vPC-HM mode to create a port channel when the switch is connected to multiple upstream switches
that are not clustered.
my question is,
can I use LACP with multiple upstream switches that are not clustered?
can I use LACP with multiple upstream switches that are stacked?
if I stack multiple upstream switches, does it mean clustered?
thanks.
Hi,
See some of the guidelines:
Guidelines and Limitations
Port channeling has the following guidelines and restrictions:
•All ports in the port channel must be in the same Cisco Nexus 1000V module; you cannot configure port channels across Cisco Nexus 1000V modules.
•Port channels can be formed with multiple upstream links only when they satisfy the compatibility requirements and under the following conditions:
–The uplinks from the host are going to the same upstream switch.
–The uplinks from the host going to multiple upstream switches are configured with vPC-HM.
•You can configure multiple port channels on a device.
•After you configure a port channel, the configuration that you apply to the port channel interface affects the port channel member ports. The configuration that you apply to the member ports affects only the member port where you apply the configuration.
•You must remove the port security information from a port before you can add that port to a port channel. Similarly, you cannot apply the port security configuration to a port that is a member of a channel group.
•You can configure ports that belong to a port channel group as PVLAN ports.
•Any configuration changes that you apply to the port channel is applied to every member interface of that port channel.
•Channel member ports cannot be a source or destination SPAN port.
That said LACP should work on switches that are not clustered and meet the conditions above.
A stack is treated as one unit which means that would be like you have just one big chassis.
Stacking does not the same as clustering it works different. so if you stack them that would be a stack not a cluster

Hope this helps.

Possible to use inline mode with Port Channel
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has used inline mode with Port Channel configuration placing WAE device between router and switch. Any tips or gotcahs to be concerned about. We currently have inline mode running at this location but site would want redudancy built in through port channel.
kind regards,
NigelHi Nigel,
This is not supported :

Win2003 ServerIssues with Port Channel?
Hello all. I have had 2 different Windows 2003 Servers with Teamed 1000MB NICs have trouble when connecting to a port channel on a 4507. The server is not pingable while connected to the port channel. Once I remove the 2 interfaces from the port channel, communication is back up. I do see that when looking at the mac-address table for one of the interfaces in the port channel it shows both the virtual MAC of the teamed NICs and the physical mac of the NIC. This seems to be an issue but does not happen with any of our Windows 2000 Servers. They only show the virtual MAC when looking at the table.
Any information on this issue is appreciated. It may be more of a Windows problem than Cisco but I will check both.Hello,
which NICs do you have (brand) ? Not sure if this helps, but what if you configure port security on both ports of the 4507, allowing only the virtual MAC address ?

Stacking 3750s and Port Channel
We're replacing legacy switches with 3750s in the coming months, and I have a question about stacking and port channel.
The 3750s will be Layer 2 switches, and each will be uplinked via Gigabit fiber to a pair of 6500s acting as Layer 3 distribution switches.
One thing I'm not sure about is if it will be possible to built Port Channel links for 2, 3, or 4 GB across different switches, or if I can only put Port Channels on the same switch. My understanding is with stacking it appears as one big switch and I can built Port Channels however I want, but am not 100% if this design will work. You can certainly configure EtherChannels across different 3750s in the same stack, thus avoiding your single point of failure by having the aggregate ports all in one switch.
However in the scenario the port channel has to be configured explicitly to ON, PaGP is not supported across stack members.
3750 stack switches appear as a single logical switch with a single management address. From which you can configure all physical ports. It is important to remember that you configure your switch priorities accordingly in order to govern which switch is your master, and also set a secondary.

Allan.

Port-channel Problem between Fabric Interconnect and N7K vPC
Dear all,
I have a problem with Port-channel Uplink between Fabric Interconnect with N7K using vPC
This is my network topology for UCS Deployment
In N7K I has configured vPC for red link and green link, at Fabric Interconnect A I has configured Port-Channel with member is Port 1 and Port 2, uplink is red link. At Fabric Interconnect B, I has configured Port-Channel with member is Port 1 and Port 2, uplink is green link.
The show interface port-channel on N7K is good, every port-channel is up and have all member. But At Fabric Interconnnect, when I see on UCS Manager, the status of Port-Channel on Fabic A and Fabric B is fault with Additional Info: No operational member. Although all link is link up and I has status of Port-Channel is enable on UCS Manager. When I see the Properties of Port 1, Port 2 on Port-channel, I see the membership status is : individual. This mean port-channel is not up and no membership in this configuration. I want to using port-channel for load balance and plus more bandwidth for uplink to 20Gig. I don't understand why ?
Please help me resolve this problem, I has send the capture screen of UCS Manager when I show status of Port-channel and Port-member in port-channel in attach items.
Anyone can help me to resolve this, thanks you very much. Please reference attach items for more detail about fault.
Thanks,
Trung.Thanks Matthew very much,
I has resolved this problem. The reason of problem is miss match protocol of port-channel between N7K and Fabric Interconnect. The Fabric Interconnect always use LACP protocol, but N7K using Port-channel mode on, that why the port-channel failed. I has configured LACP for port-channel in N7K, it has resolved the problems.
Thanks,
Trung. -
2960x port channel bandwidth command workaround
Folks:
I am looking for a work around - Currently I have a four member 2960x switch stack - I have Ten 1/0/1 and Ten 3/0/1 in a port-channel; however, when I try to set the 'bandwidth' on PO1 interface to 20000000 I receive an error, which corresponds being out of range, due to the links being 10Gbps.
Is there a work around so my PO1 interface reflects the correct bandwidth?
Switch I am using and version of software
Switch Ports Model SW Version SW Image
* 1 52 WS-C2960X-48TD-L 15.0(2)EX5 C2960X-UNIVERSALK9-M
Thank you
JJThe tx-/rxload is probably the least of your problems. Assuming we're talking about a L2 port-channel the interface BW is base for spanning tree cost calculation. With a BW 10000000 kbit/s STP would consider the port-channel equal to a single 10GE link and could possibly decide to block your port-channel for a less favorable link.
That being said, the port-channel is supposed to have the correct BW corresponding to the number of bundled links without any need for manual user configuration.
I suppose it is either a software bug or there is an interface not bundled correctly.
Post the result of 'show etherc sum' here to check.

Hi All,
I have a MDS9509 with port channels going to my Cisco blade switches on my HP Proliant blade enclosure.
I have NO ports left on my MDS9509, but DO have some remaining on the blade enclosure.
The question is, can i port channel from the blade enclosure to another edge switch (MDS9148)?
Is that a supported configuration/Best Practice and what are the ramifications if I do that?
So I'm going from Core, to edge and then to edge switch with port channel.
Thanks,
MattHi Matthew,
Sorry for the misunderstanding, your to-be diagram cleared up a lot for me :-)
First off, yes, it will work. There's no reason it shouldn't and if you have the external ports free on your 9124e, you can hook up a new switch.
It's far from a conventional design, because blade switches are supposed to go in the Edge. It's not a best practice.
What I would recommend is that you move some of the storage from your edge to the 9148, and treat it as a collapsed core, sharing an edge switch (the blade switch). You can then ISL the 9148 and the 9509 together into a somewhat sensible topology.
So for one fabric this would be
(disk)---9148 --- 9509 -- (disks) (some moved to the left to free up space for ISLs)
9124e
Or you can contact your sales team and look to swap some Linecards with higher port density ones.
Lastly I would like to note that, however you link up the switches, most combinations available to you will 'work'. So as a temp solution you can go ahead with the (core - blade - edge) scenario. Just know that you'll be introducing bottlenecks and potential weak points into your network. -
Hi,
I am converting 2 6500 chassis to VSS, currently they are configured as primary & backup. Downstream switch have 4 uplinks, 2 to each chassis with port channels. After I convert to VSS I will have all 4 ports connecting to downstream switch in a port channel, can I keep 2 separate port channels on downstream switch or will it cause issues ?
thanks
hasratHi Hazrat,
I agree with Reza. By the way what is at your mind in keeping 2 seperate port-channels to one device?(please note after VSS logically it is one switch). One of the Port-channel will not be used at all since spanning tree will block it. So as Reza said bundle them in all one.
Thanks,

Hello,
Once in production, when adding cables in a Fabric PortChannel between an IOM and a FI, ¿is it needed to re-ack the chassis? (so that, we'll have downtime of the whole chassis). Or rather, as it is a Port-Channel the cables are detected automatically, so that it is not needed to re-ack, and so there's no downtime at all...which one is the correct statement?
Thanks,Hello,
Let us consider following scenario on adding or removing links to existing deployment.
Initial deployment
UCSM 2.0, FI 62XX ,2208 IOM and 2 physical links with port channel configuration ( 2 link discovery policy )
Change
1) If additional links are added and if they need to be utilized and part of port channel, we need to re-ack the chassis.
2) If a link goes down, traffic is distributed across other links in port channel and does not require re-ack. Parameters like bandwidth, VIF ports that are calculated based on initial configuration remains the same.
3) If we physically remove the additional links between IOM / FI, re-acknowledment would create port-channel with original two links.Failure to re-ack will create over subscription ( bandwidth, available VIF ports ) of the network links.Re-ack is not mandatory but it creates appropriate configuration that matches required design criteria.
Caution
Adding or removing links from a fabric port channel is disruptive and may affect the available amount of VIF namespace.

We have two Cisco ASA 55XX Firewalls and both are in HA (Active/Standy). Two ports from each Firewall is connecting two ports of Nexus 5K Switch and running port channel between Firewall & Nexus Switch and port-channel is UP. And Switches having back to back connection with allowed all VLAN trunk port.

FW02 ----------------- SW02 (Two ports with Port channel)
I have VLAN 10 with IP Subnet 10.10.10.0/28
SW01 : 10.10.10.2
SW02 : 10.10.10.3
HSRP IP : 10.10.10.1
FWs : 10.10.10.4 & 10.10.10.5
Firewall Default Gateway : 10.10.10.1
Problem : I am not able Ping Firewall IPs from Nexus Switches. When I checked ARP table in Nexus Switch; I have observed that Firealls two IPs having same MAC address; when I checked that MAC address in the Firewall; that MAC address is Port channel interface MAC address.
This is issue (two IPs learing same MAC address) from ASA.
How to fix this issue ?
Thanks
VenkatHi,
What version of IOS are you running on the ASAs?
see table-12-3 in this link:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/asa/asa84/configuration/guide/asa_84_cli_config/interface_start.html
Also, since the 4500x are in VSS mode, you need to bundle one link from each switch and use LACP.

How to configure a port channel with VLAN trunking (and make it work..)
We're trying to configure a port channel group with trunked ports to connect a NetApp HA pair. We want to create two data LIFs and connect them to the switch stack. We are trying to create 2 data lifs, one for cifs and one for nfs that are on different vlans.
We want the same ports to be able to allow multiple vlans to communicate. (trunked)
These data lifs should be able to fail over to different nodes in the HA pair and still be able to communicate on the network.
What this means is that we have to connect 4 ports each for each node in the NetApp HA Pair to the switches and create a port channel of some type that allows for trunked vlans. When we configure the ports, the configuration is as follows (below):
We are only able to configure an IP on one of the vlans.
When we configure an IP from another vlan for the data lif, it does not respond to a ping.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong on the Cisco switch?

Write all digitall ports (Channels) with decimal value
Hi,
it is possible to write all digital port with a decimal value for a device with 96 channels in the same time?
I have a USB 6509 device and I want to write each bit whit value 1 in loop (for the first port I write 0,1,2,4,8,16, 32, 64 and 128) with line "Dev3/port0/line0:7", but if I want to write all the ports in the same time how to set the line and the "DAQmx write.vi"?
Thank you.
Solved!
Go to Solution.
Attachments:
Untitled 1.vi 13 KBYou can setup reading and writing in 8-bit ports with the 6509. So you could just write 128 to "Dev3/port0". If you want to write to all 12 ports, I recommend making a task that is multiple channels on the 6509 module, each channel in the task being a port. You can then use the Multiple Channel, Single Sample to write your values. Your values will need to be in an array of U8.
There are only two ways to tell somebody thanks: Kudos and Marked Solutions

Peer-Switch with vPC and non-vPC Vlan Port-Channels
Hi,
in a design guide i have noticed that it is best practice to split vPC and non-vPC vlans on different inter-switch port-channels. Now, if i want to use the Peer-Switch function, but the port-channel interface of the non-vPC-vlan channel moves into blocking state. The option spanning-tree pseudo-information has no influence. Is peer-switch possible in my kind of topology?
Greeting,
StephanI believe absolutly possible. specifically coz peer-switch and spt pseudo-info are specific and local to cisco fabric services running as part of vpc technology. Personally me has lab with vpc-domain compounded of 2 N5Ks. They are peer-switches with spt-pseudoinfo and they have MST running on non VPC links independantly from vpc.
