Ac voltage measurements with ni 9219

Hello
i am trying to measure an ac voltage through lab view using NI 9219 module.for test purpose  i have connected an Ac voltage source HI to pin #4 and Lo to Pin # 5. by setting up the DAQ assistant i plotted the output value of a 5 Vp-p sine wave.
i am expecting a sine wave but i can only get a straight line of few milli volts in the output graph(lab View).i am not sure if the NI9219 internally converts it to dc Voltage or  i have some problems with the connection diagram.if NI 9219 has internal ADC converting the input to DC how can i de activate it so i can get an AC waveform
Please comment.
Thanks,
Ali

Well you have to sample a pure sine wave at a rate of at least twice its frequency otherwise you will not have enough resolution to properly reconstruct the original analog signal.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyquist%E2%80%93Shannon_sampling_theorem  More complex signals require even higher sampling rates (and fancy filters) to avoid aliasing issues.
The 9219 is a rather specialized module designed for strain gauges, thermocouples and other low-frequency application.  Have you read its spec sheet and manuals???  http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/208789

  • PC-Card (Voltage?) problem with T42P, T61P and X61

    Hi!
I´ve got a problem with my LaCie - card, but the card is okay so it´s a problem with my thinkpads.
The card runs ok with my T61P: an external powered FireFire storage is recognized by the thinkpad. On my T42P and my X61 the card is recognized as an texas instruments IEEE 1394 bus host controller BUT: neither the self-powered firewire storage is recognized nor an audio interface (motu ultra-lite km3, selfbowered or bus-powered).
My question: is there a voltage problem on some thinkpads? Any idea what I can do? Another firewire-card? I do have to run the audio-interface bus-powered with a thinkpad, is this impossible???
    Hope you can help me!
    With best regards,
    Thomas
    EDIT:
    - The audio interface only runs on T61P, but not bus-powered. It only works with power supply - but the port seems to be to slow: "The device is on a bus that cannot support this transfer rate" is mentioned by motu software
So I´m quite disappointed, if I get it right:
    - PCI-Cardbus does not provide enough voltage to work with a good audio interface
    - PCI-Cardbus is too slow to work with a good audio interface
    Any suggestions?
    Mmmhhhh.....

  • How to measure voltage changes using a NI-9219 with strain gauges and use the data in labview

I am updating an old LabView/Data Acquisition system that uses strain gauges to measure two forces (normal and axial) as well as two moments (Pitch and Roll). I am having trouble reading the voltage changes over my strain gauges using my NI-9219 as well as filtering the data with both a lowpass and smoothing filter. The program attached has the project and should have all the sub-vi's used in the program. This program was written on LabView version 8.5 and is being updated to a 2013 version of LabView. Also, the hardware previously used was a combination of a NI SCB-68 and NI USB-6251. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Coffeyfj,
Did you ever had this set up working? The first thing that I would do as I mentioned in the previous comment would be to use one of the LabVIEW examples. I recommended to you using the (strain - Continuous Input.vi). If you can read any voltage changes with the example vi, then we will know the problem we are having is in your code. If you cannot read any voltage changes using the example I mentioned, we can start trouble shooting the hardware connections. Are you connecting the excitation voltage? If yes, Are you making the right connections. Please refer to page 19 of the following document (half and full bridge modes)

  • Error in reading voltage using DAQmx with PXI-6259

    Hi,
We are trying to acquire analogue voltage from 5 channels using PXI-6259. We trigger the data sampling with clk 0 (i.e. using PFI 12).
    The problem we had is:
1)When we tried to get voltage from 5 channels, we get 2 data at the same after twice the period. For example, If we set the
sampling rate to be of period 1 second, we get 1 signal at 2 second and around (2+t), where t is a random time less than the execution period of the loop.
Then the next cycles would be 4 second and (4+t).
    2) This timing problem did not occur if we only acquire voltage from 2 or less channels.
    3) We tried to run exactly the same program with NI USB-6210 and everything worked just fine.
    4) We replaced the DAQmx read with DAQ assistant and still encountered the same problem.
Attached is the a simple program that showed the error. Is this possibly a bug in PXI or DAQmx?

    Good afternoon Nitin,
Thanks for contacting National Instruments with your issue, we'll try our best to resolve it for you as quickly and efficiently as possible.
    As the error message stated:
"Analog input virtual channels cannot be created out of order with respect to their physical channel numbers for the type of analog device you are using. For example, a virtual channel using physical channel ai0 must be created before a virtual channel with physical channel ai1."
If you need to randomly switch which channels you want to either control IEPE excitation or coupling on, a better approach rather than having all of these channels in one task as you've done in your attached VI, is to parse your program down to multiple tasks that can run simultaneously.
I have attached a screenshot of this approach, which hopefully is not a compromise to your application.
Best of luck with your project.

  • Read and save voltage measurement

    Dear NI Technical Support personnel,
I am using LabVIEW Signal Express 2.5 to measure the voltage with time using USB-6211 . If I want to record the voltage using a sample rate of 1000 Hz. for a certain time e.g. 2 hours. Shall I start with Record or Run if I want to save the data? If I start with Run then I Stop would the data then be saved if I click on Record?
    Thank you

    Hi,
With LabView SignalExpress, you can record data by either pressing Run, then pressing Record or by simply pressing Record only. In both cases, it should ask you to confirm which channel you want to acquire data from before the recording process begins. Data won't be recorded if you were to press Run, wait two hours and then press Record, as no data will have been recorded in the interim period.
I hope this is of help to you,
    Dan

  • Slow AC voltage measurement readings with hp34401a

    Hi,
I am currently using the hp34401a to record an input and output signal voltage (this is then converted programmatically to frequency response). This measurement however I consider to take exceptionally long for what it is (approx 3 seconds per measurement). I am using Configure measurement.vi (set to AC voltage on auto range) and Read(single point).vi. If anyone can give me some ideas how to speed up these readings that would be appreciated.
I have had a look at a similar test done with Labview 6.2.1, where the testing is much faster. The same instrument is being used but with Traditional NI-DAQ.
    Thanks

I have tried all the possible/ suggested ways I can think of to improve the reading. There seems to be little that can be done in AC. Even applying the fast filter did nothing to improve the time. I tried to do DC voltage measurement, then take a multipt read and use the Basic rms.vi to obtain an AC value but this is very inaccurate. It seems that this DMM is very limited in its speed for this type of measurment.
I took a look in the spec. Forget the DC way if you have frequencies higher 80Hz....however if you have sampled waveforms do a tone detection (FFT based) or better a SAM (sinus approximation via min MSE) to get the best out of your data ( For FRF with sinus excitation). With RMS measurements you will measure hum and noise too, however you didn't tell us the uncertainty goal nor your DUT.
I don't use this instrument but from the spec and my experience with HPs(agilent) you should be able to get 10 reading/s in AC mode BUT still have to wait for the settling of the AC filter after switching (I assume you use the front and rear input)
I would encourage you to write a small state machine for the task and post it here.

  • I-V measurement with E3631 and KE6485

    Hi,
I use an Agilent E3631a triple output power supply and Keithley 6485 picoammeter to obtain I-V curves. I use a for loop for this purpose. But I found a couple of problems with the measurement.
    1. Voltage in E3631a keeps falling back 2% at each point. For example, even though I set it to 2.000V,it outputs 2.000 v first, then falls to 1.980 V. I don't know whether or not it is because of the for-loop.
    2. Although I didn't set any delay time in voltage output, the sweep is not as fast as I expected. I am wondering whether or not there is a rate limiting step in VISA sessions.
This is my first labview program, so I want to post it here for critism and suggestions. Thank you. I use Labview 6.

    Hi Code:
I briefly looked at your code and it looks pretty good. It is hard to tell exactly what is going on without having the instruments though. I cannot tell why you would be getting the problems you are seeing but my suggestion would be to strip the code down and try one instrument at a time to see if you still get the same results.

  • Unable to read 5th channel using cDAQ 9178 with NI 9219 modules

    Dear LabView user,
I've made a VI for reading the measurements of a couple of LVDT sensors, a load cell and a couple of strain gauges. When I connect 4 of these sensors to my cDAQ 9178 with using 1 slot of NI 9219, then there is no problem for my VI. But if I use 2 modules, and connect the 2 LVDT sensors and the load cell to the first module, and the 2 strain gauges to the 2nd module, then my program only will show the readings of the first module and the readings of only 1 strain gauge on the 2nd module. I've found that there occurs an error for the 5th channel in the 'zero' state. It says my buffer size is too small... How can I solve this problem? I can't work with finite samples because it is a continious measurement.
I also have the cDAQ 9171 USB module, if I only connect 4 sensors to this module, the sample rate is high (100 Samples/sec), when I use the same configuration, but connect this with the cDAQ 9178, the sample rate is much lower however I use the same NI 9219 module to fill the slots. Is there some kind of setting I need to make when switching over to the cDAQ 9178?
    I've attached my VI.
    With kind regards,
    Pete

    Dear RavensFan,
    Thank you for your answer.
"Have you tried swapping the modules between the slots and see if you still have the same problem or if it moves?"  When I use the cDAQ 9178, I always use the first 2 slots next to the power suply and the usb connection, you mean that I should try for example the 4th and the 5th slot or other slots? I will try this on Monday, and I will let you know.
About the states machines inside a state: How is it possible then to use several buttons, like start and stop measurement and the 'home' button inside the state "measurement"? Should I make another simple state machine inside this state?
What about that 5th channel that I'm unable to read? The problem happens in my "zero" state: to acquire my "zero elements", the loop does the job for the 5 channels for the first 8 samples, after that, it doesn't want to sample the 5 channels anymore, it only does for 4 channels... It's something about the buffer size, but I don't know how to fix that.
    With kind regards,
    Peter

  • DAQ Input Signal kept rising and stop at Max Voltage when run with nothing attached

I just installed PCI 6229 card and a BNC 2110 (Labview 8.6v). When I started the DAQ Input, the signal kept rising and stop at max Voltage  (10V) when run with nothing attached (instead of fluctuating at around 0). Just wondering what's wrong with it and how to solve it. Terminal configuration was "Differential"
I just created an input DAQ with a scope and while loop to look at it. Please let me know if I do anything wrong
    Thanks

    Go to Solution.

I just re-read your original post.  Why do you have the terminal setting to differential?  This sounds like a single ended setup to me.  Change the terminal setting to RSE.  With a differential setting. you need to connect one source to AI1 and another source to AI9.  The difference between the two will be reported.  With RSE, only AI1 will matter and the voltage with respect to ground will be reported.  Make sure you have your AO ground tied to your AI ground.

Thanks for the input so far guys.

    For vdimm...
RacerX says top leg of mosfet (number 1 in the pic) = 2.27v
Maesus says north pin of coil (number 2 in the pic) = 5.01v
Even EDO Ram only needed 3.3v so I guess number is the correct measuring point since I've set 2.2v in the BIOS.
As for the vcore, I'll have to figure out a way to get the mobo to stand upright on the floor so I can access the back of the board with both hands
You need to measure the coil under the PCI slot(tough with video card) but it measures the same as the mosfet I mentioned. Still don't understand the vcore measurement but whats important is where to measure this so call vMCH or PCI xpress voltage. To be honest it does nothing in terms of OCing compared to other boards with this option. Any ideas?

  • How to measure current and voltage and rpm with daq device

i am measuring current and voltage and am wondering should i use shunt resistors or current sensors hall effect sensors. i have a pci 6221 and a scc-68 breakout box. what specifications or size should the shunt resistor/current sensor be or should i use another device to measure the currrent and voltage. do i need any other safety device between the resistors, current sensors and the scc-68 breakout box when measuring the current and voltage. will the daq card pci 6221 pick up a signal from the resistor. what terminals should the wires from the resistors and current sensors be connected to in the scc-68. i am using a proximity switch to measure rpm of a motor. should the proximity switch be 2 or 3wire connection. should it have an analog or digital connection and is a power supply required to power the proximity switch and should it have an npn or pnp connection

i was going to use a 20amp 50mv, or a 20amp 100mv current shunt and connect wires directly into the AI input terminals of the scc-68 from the current shunt would these be suitable. would current shunts such as these be suitable to use http://uk.farnell.com/elc/sh10020/shunt-sh10020-20a-100mv-1-class/dp/1319576 or http://uk.farnell.com/datel/3020-01098-0/shunt-50mv-20a/dp/1339338
is it ok to use either a current shunt or should a hall effect sensor be used  such as this http://ie.farnell.com/honeywell-s-c/csla2cd/sensor-hall-effect/dp/1082269 . which of them would be more accurate or are both of them fairly accurate.
when i am measuring voltage can i connect two resistors between the positive and negative of the wires going to the battery and connect two wires from either side of the resistor directly into the analog inputs of the scc-68 and measure the 12-15 volts directly would the pci6221 and scc-68 be able to measure the voltage drop across the resistor.
i wanted to measure rpm also does it matter whether the proximity switch has 2 or 3 wires and should it have an analog or digital/frequency output for cponnecting to the scc-68

  • Frequency/Period measurement with USB-6218

I have been trying to get a USB-6218 to measure either frequency or period and have been running in to issues. I have attempted to connected to each counter gate (PFI1 or PFI2) and have not had any luck. I am attempting to meausre lower-frequency signals (1Hz-1KHz) so the Low-Frequency, 1 counter approach seems to be the one I need. The end goal is to get it working in Labwindows. I have made attempts using both sample LabWindows programs as well as MAX. In each of them, it appears that the frequency measurement is actually coming back with the pulse width of both the low and high portions of the signal. For instance, if I am trying to meausre the period of a 100 Hz signal, with a 75% duty cycle, it will toggle between 0.0075 and 0.0025 seconds for the period. If I increase the frequency of the signal to 10 KHz, it measures the frequency well. Is there something I am missing? Based on the manual, I should be able to meausre lower frequency signals using this method. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Can you upload a screenshot of your Task in MAX is setup? Is this happening at all lower frequencies or just at 100 Hz? Lets make sure we can get this working in MAX before adding LabWindows/CVI on top of it.
Sometimes this can happen if the rise/fall time of the signal is not within the specifications of the device. This KnowledgeBase article shows the acceptable rise/fall times.

  • Simultaneous temperature and voltage measurement

We have a NI-4351 to measure both the temperature and a voltage across a resistor. We have utilized two successive flat sequence structure frames, each containing an AI-Single Scan SubVI, to first scan the voltage off the thermocouple, and the second to scan the voltage off the resistor. Our voltage readings across the resistor are roughly 3V.
When we run our VI without scanning the resistor voltage, our temperature readings are correct. However, once we connect the voltage supply to a channel on the terminal board, we notice two things:
    1) A constant error of 2500
    2) The voltage readings across the thermocouples shoot up three magnitudes of error to approximately 0.08 volts
Would we need to separate the two scans into two separate buffers? If so, how would we do this?
    Much Appreciated!!

    Coolest,
At first glance, this particular issue may be related to the fact that the 4351 can only be configured for one gain setting across all of its channels. I recommend that you connect both signals and run a program which only performs one measurement at a time, reconfiguring the board between each measurement. If you still have the problem, disconnect both signals and then measure each one at a time. Make sure that you are configuring the channels to be ground referenced. If you've tried all of this and are still experiencing the same problem, there might be some cross-talk occurring between the channels -- potentially due to a grounding issue.
I hope that this is helpful to you.

I want to use my PCI 6624 for measuring of frequency signals from a gear flow meter. The problem is that when I start running the VI there is no pulses from the flow meter and the VI stops to run and I get a Timeout error message. I.e is it possible to measure 0 Hz with the 6624 input used for frequency measurement?
With hardware from IOtech and Daisylab I don`t have this kind of problem.
                                        /Thanks in advance

    Having similar problem,
Did you manage to resolve the issue?
I have attached the the solution given by NI for error code 200474, if its any use. The problem I have just found with this Vi is that if one channel has no signal it forces the other channel to grind to a halt. This problem has existed for me on the cards being used in this project PXI-6289 and PXI-6236, also other DAQ cards used in a different project earlier in the year.
It seems to be a serious flaw in the application of the NI DAQ cards to general purpose data logging where counter signals might not be connected by the end user or they are very low frequency and the whole system hangs.
