Accepting userinput in stored procedure

Hi
I'm writing a stored procedure which will prompt the user to enter his username as
saying 'Please enter your User ID' . I've written the procedure as
create or replace
PROCEDURE Proc_AddUser AS
ACCEPT username CHAR PROMPT 'PLEASE ENTER YOUR FIRST NAME: ' ;
BEGIN
username := '&username';
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(username);
END Proc_AddUser;
It gives the following error during compilation
Error(3,17): PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "CHAR" when expecting one of the following: := . ( @ % ; not null range default character
I also tried something like this
create or replace
PROCEDURE Proc_AddUser AS
username varchar2(20);
BEGIN
username := '&username';
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(username);
END Proc_AddUser;
But when I run it it says something like this in the running log
Connecting to the database RigManagementDatabase.
&username
Process exited.
Disconnecting from the database RigManagementDatabase.

Stored procedures, by definition reside in the DB server. And they know nothing about screen, keyboard or mouse, that are commonly used to enter data and that are managed by client applications - one of them being SQL*Plus which does have some rudimentary facilities for client imput (meaning in comparison with forms-driven applications built using some development environment).
Stored procs can communicate at runtime through files - using utl_file package, alerts - using dbms_alert package and pipes - using dbms_pipe package. Maybe you wish to read some documentation on these Oracle supplied packages. That means that some process (at OS level) will write to a file, or will be connected to the DB and signal an alert or write to a pipe, and the stored proc running will handle the data from that source.

    Hello,
    Yes you can invoke Web Services from the database, it is often called "Database Web Service call out" and it is documented in the Web Services Developer Guide

  • APEX - accepting OUT variable values from PL/SQL Stored Procedure

    I have created a page (Form) which is accepting values text fields.
    In the Page Processing section under Processing, I am passing the values to a PL/SQL Stored Procedure, which acts like an API. The procedure contains code to validate the entered data and finally insert the data into the base tables. The procedure also contains OUT variables in the parameter that would return status of processing and any error messages.
    Now, my question is, how can I make the page accept these OUT variables from the procedure. What I wish to do is, to capture these messages/processing status from the procedure in the page. For example, if there is a error in the data and the procedure is sending this message in the OUT variable, I need this to be displayed on the page as an error message.
    Is this possible in APEX?

    Hi VC,
    I just tried putting the string directly instead of the variable. Its still not giving me the expected results.
    HOWEVER, I think the reason was because of the EXCEPTION block in my code. I have an EXCEPTION block to handle exceptions. I commented the WHEN OTHERS section and now the error message is coming on the page.
    So what I have done now is as follows: At the point at which the error is expected, I am raising a handled exception. And within the exception handling, I am giving RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR.
    WHEN ex_main_error*
    THEN*
    p_status := 2;*
    p_msg := 'ERROR Stage: '||lc_err_stage||' ERROR Message: '||lc_err_msg;*
    RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR (-20001, p_msg);*
    This is working now! Which is very good news. Thanks once again for your help!

  • Help on writing pl/sql stored procedure to accept input in xml format

    Hi All,
    I need to write a pl.sql stored procedure which would be getting the input as an xml.
    The requirement is that xml data recieved in below fashion needs to be inserted to 3 different tables.
    The tags under the root node directly needs to be inserted into Table1
    The tags under the first element of the root node needs to be inserted into Table2
    Can anybody help me on how to write a stored procedure which could take up the below xml as input and insert the data received into 3 different tables.
    Any sample code.pointers to achieve this could be of great help.
    The structure of the xml would be as follows:
    <AssemblyProduct>
    <AssemblyHeader>
    <Name></Name>
    <AssemblyId></AssemblyId>
    <ListOfHCSIFFs><HCSIFFHeader><Id></Id> </HCSIFFHeader> </ListOfHCSIFFs>
    <ListOfHCSIFFs><HCSIFFHeader><Id></Id> </HCSIFFHeader> </ListOfHCSIFFs>
    <ListOfHCSIFFs><HCSIFFHeader><Id></Id> </HCSIFFHeader> </ListOfHCSIFFs>
    </AssemblyHeader>
    <AssemblyHeader>
    <Name></Name>
    <AssemblyId></AssemblyId>
    </AssemblyHeader>
    <AssemblyHeader></AssemblyHeader>
    <ApplicationId></ApplicationId>
    <ApplicationName></ApplicationName>
    <ApplicationValidFrom></ApplicationValidFrom>
    <ApplicationValidTo></ApplicationValidTo>
    </AssemblyProduct>

    Well you could write your procedure to accept a parameter of XMLTYPE datatype and then use that value in a query inside the procedure to break the data up as required using something like XMLTABLE e.g.
    -- Nested repeating groups example:
    WITH t as (select XMLTYPE('

  • How to create a stored procedure that accepts an array of args from Java?

    I am to be creating a stored procedure that accepts an array of arguments from Java. How to create this? thanks
    Sam

    Not a PL/SQL question really, but a Java one. The client call is done via ThinJDBC/OCI to PL/SQL, This call must be valid and match the parameters and data types of the PL/SQL procedure.
    E.g. Let's say I define the following array (collection) structure in Oracle:
    SQL> create or replace type TStrings as table of varchar2(4000);
    Then I use this as dynamic array input for a PL/SQL proc:
    create or replace procedure foo( string_array IN TStrings )...
    The client making the call to PL/SQL needs to ensure that it passes a proper TStrings array structure.. The Oracle Call Interface (OCI) supports this on the client side - allowing the client to construct an OCI variable that can be passed as a TStrings data type to SQL. Unsure just what JDBC supports in this regard.
    An alternative method, and a bit of a dirty hack, is to construct the array dynamically - but as this does not use bind variables, it is not a great idea.
    E.g. the client does the call as follows: begin
      foo( TStrings( 'Tom', 'Dick', 'Harry' ) );
    end;Where the TStrings constructor is created by the client by stringing together variables to create a dynamic SQL statement. A bind var call would look like this instead (and scale much better on the Oracle server side):begin
      foo( :MYSTRINGS );
    end;I'm pretty sure these concepts are covered in the Oracle Java Developer manuals...

    my stored procedure accepts input of type text
    i use text type becouse nvarchar is not enough to
    place data.
    and i want to send data that is greater than the
    length of varcharUnder setString in the API:
    "The driver converts this to an SQL VARCHAR or LONGVARCHAR value (depending on the argument's size relative to the driver's limits on VARCHAR values) when it sends it to the database."
    I am not sure what you should use then? Maybe setCharacterStream?

  • Oracle Stored Procedure Not Accepting Comma delimited values in database

    I have a stored procedure which does the following, declares variables and assigns values retrieved from a parameter temp_table database to each variable, then it reads column headings from a master table. Using the variables assigned to each parameter from the temp_table as a filter, the rows from the MASTER TABLE are finally output by the procedure. The stored procedure works fine when dealing with single value string values passed from the parameter temp_table.
    The problem comes in when multiple values are selected and stored in the database parameter field as a comma separated string, eg. A045, A012
    So, the strored procedure has been modified to use a function to split the string into separate values: 'A045' and 'A012'. So that: A045, A012 from the database will be returned to the stored procedure variable as *('A045', 'A012')* . When testing the stored procedure using the static values *('A045', 'A012')* , data is returned.
    eg. EMPLOYEE_MASTER.CODE IN ('*A045*', '*A012*') will return results
    However, when *('A045', 'A012')* is dynamically concatenated from the function and assigned to variable:
    paramCode := split_str(paramCode) with paramCode eventually being passed: *('A045', 'A012')*
    to become:
    EMPLOYEE_MASTER.CODE IN (paramCode)
    then NO DATA is returned.
    I am stuck and don't know what the problem is. If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to help. I have included the Actual Stored Procedure below for a better understanding.

    ORA-06512: at line 13This is not an Oracle error - this is the mail server saying "+hey, I don't like that e-mail address you are supplying, I'm not accepting it!+".
    If you look at RFC821 (Request For Comments memo 821 describes the SMTP specifications), you'll see that the sender and recipient needs to be supplied in the format +<[email protected]>+, e.g. +<[email protected]>+.
    I have found that not all SMTP servers are equal in this regard. Some may insist on the brackets around the address, some may not.
    You need to confirm the format of the addresses you use in the "+MAIL FROM+" and "+RCPT TO+" commands.. and ensure that these formats are accepted by your SMTP server - and if not, change your code to use an acceptable format.
    The easiest way to do this is using telnet - and interacting directly and manually with the server. SMTP is a clear text protocol and easy to use manually. Try it. It is the best way to test SMTP interaction and validate the approach and SMTP commands and arguments used by your code.

  • Datetime parameter from stored procedure

    <p>I have a report written in CR10 which uses a stored procedure as the datasource. The stored procedure has 3 input parameters, two of which are datetime data types. When the crystal report is run, it prompts the user for the 3 parameters & runs just fine except...</p><p>For the date parameters, it prompts the user to enter a time as well. In previous versions of Crystal, parameters that were datetime data types in the stored procedure were just prompted for the date when the calling crystal report was run.</p><p>I attempted to edit the parameters in the report, but the "Value Type" is grayed out (I assume since the parameter is associated with the stored procedure, rather than being a user defined parameter within the report).  These date parameters are used in a BETWEEN statement in the stored proc, so if the user just enters a date but accepts the default time, the returned data gets flakey due to the addition of the time value passed by the parameter.</p><p> I tried setting a default value for the time, but I have to enter a date along with the time, which the report then uses as the default. The user then has to uncheck the "Pick from defaults" checkbox in order to enter their own date. This is really unwieldly for the end user, especially when they were previously able to just enter a date and not have to be concerned with a time at all.</p><p>Does anyone have suggestions on working around this issue? </p><p>Thanks in advance...</p>

    <p>You mention that you are using CRW version 10 for this.  What&#39;s the data source you are reporting against (you mention a stored procedure - but are you running against Oracle, SQL Server, DB2?).  Are you connecting natively or using ODBC? <br /></p>

  • Return records from Stored Procedure to Callable Statement

    Hi All,
    I am createing a web application to display a students score card.
    I have written a stored procedure in oracle that accepts the student roll number as input and returns a set of records as output containing the students scoring back to the JSP page where it has to be put into a table format.
    how do i register the output type of "records" from the stored function in oracle in the "registerOutParameter" method of the "callable" statement in the JSP page.
    if not by this way is there any method using which a "stored function/procedure" returning "record(s)" to the jsp page called using "callable" statement be retrieved to be used in the page. let me know any method other that writing a query for the database in the JSP page itself.

    I have a question for you:
    If the stored procedure is doing nothing more than generating a set of results why are you even using one?
    You could create a view or write a simple query like you mentioned.
    If you're intent on going the stored procedure route, then I have a suggestion. Part of the JDBC 2.0 spec allows you to basically return an object from a CallableStatement. Its a little involved but can be done. An article that I ran across a while back really helped me to figure out how to do this. There URL to it is as follows:
    http://www.fawcette.com/archives/premier/mgznarch/javapro/2000/03mar00/bs0003/bs0003.asp
    Pay close attention to the last section of the article: Persistence of Structured Types.
    Here's some important snippets of code:
    String UDT_NAME = "SCHEMA_NAME.PRODUCT_TYPE_OBJ";
    cstmt.setLong(1, value1);
    cstmt.setLong(2, value2);
    cstmt.setLong(3, value3);
    // By updating the type map in the connection object
    // the Driver will be able to convert the array being returned
    // into an array of LikeProductsInfo[] objects.
    java.util.Map map = cstmt.getConnection().getTypeMap();
    map.put(UDT_NAME, ProductTypeObject.class);
    super.cstmt.registerOutParameter(4, java.sql.Types.STRUCT, UDT_NAME);
    * This is the class that is being mapped to the oracle object.
    * There are two methods in the SQLData interface.
    public class ProductTypeObject implements java.sql.SQLData, java.io.Serializable
        * Implementation of method declared in the SQLData interface.  This method
        * is called by the JDBC driver when mapping the UDT, SCHEMA_NAME.Product_Type_Obj,
        * to this class.
        * The object being returned contains a slew of objects defined as tables,
        * these are retrieved as java.sql.Array objects.
         public void readSQL(SQLInput stream, String typeName) throws SQLException
            String[] value1 = (String[])stream.readArray().getArray();
            String[] value2 = (String[])stream.readArray().getArray();
         public void writeSQL(SQLOutput stream) throws SQLException
    }You'll also need to create Oracles Object. The specification for mine follows:
    TYPE Detail_Type IS TABLE OF VARCHAR2(1024);
    TYPE Product_Type_Obj AS OBJECT (
      value1  Detail_Type,
      value2 Detail_Type,
      value3 Detail_Type,
      value4 Detail_Type,
      value5 Detail_Type,
      value6 Detail_Type,
      value7 Detail_Type,
      value8 Detail_Type);Hope this helps,
    Zac

  • Calling stored procedure from a stored procedure

    I have a stored procedure that accepts a customer prefix like "abc" and returns a customer document number like "abc-0021". (Thanks V Garcia)
    This sp works when I call it from SQL Plus Worksheet.
    But I need to call it from another stored procedure and store it in a local variable so that I can insert it into a table with the rest of the information.
    This is what I have tried so far:
    CREATE OR REPLACE  PROCEDURE "SCHEMANAME"."SP_XXTESTXX" ( seq_name in
        varchar2)
    AS
          id_out varchar(10);
    BEGIN
       execute SP_GET_NEXT_DOC_NUMBER(seq_name,:id_out);
       print id_out;
    END;but this will not compile. I get this error:
    Line # = 8 Column # = 12 Error Text = PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "SP_GET_NEXT_DOC_NUMBER" when expecting one of the following:     := . ( @ % ; immediate The symbol ":=" was substituted for "SP_GET_NEXT_DOC_NUMBER" to continue.
    Line # = 8 Column # = 41 Error Text = PLS-00049: bad bind variable 'ID_OUT'
    Line # = 10 Column # = 10 Error Text = PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "ID_OUT" when expecting one of the following:     := . ( @ % ; The symbol ":=" was substituted for "ID_OUT" to continue.

    I think I got it.
    CREATE OR REPLACE  PROCEDURE "SCHEMANAME"."SP_XXTESTXX" ( seq_name in
        varchar2)
    AS
      id_out varchar(10);
    BEGIN
      SP_GET_NEXT_DOC_NUMBER(seq_name,id_out);
      dbms_output.put_line(id_out);
    END;This works like I wanted it to do.

  • Read data from a Stored Procedure in Android

    I have a Stored Procedure say CustOrdersDetail. I have created a MBO for it in the workspace and deployed it on SAP Mobile Server. I am unable to read data from the stored procedure in code of the Android Application. If I pass a default load argument, then I am able to read data using findAll method. How to get the data from the stored procedure by passing it an argument in the Android Code ?

    Currently I am trying to call the stored procedure and retrieve the results. The stored procedure accepts 'orderId' as an argument and fetches the Product and Order Details.

  • Passing of BOOLEAN parameters to PL/SQL stored procedures

    Hi ,
    How i can pass BOOLEAN parameter to store Procedure or do i need to pass it as Integer?
    waiting for quick reply
    Thanks in advance ,
    Pramod

    Disclaimer: I work for the company that makes the product mentioned below.
    Procedures that take boolean parameters can be called using JDBC without having to modify them or write additional 'wrapper' procedures. The secret is to write an anonymous block that accepts a numeric parameter and sets a boolean PL/SQL variable with it before calling the procedure.
    [url http://www.orindasoft.com/]OrindaBuild is a utilty made by my employer that does this along with a bunch of other stuff. If you open
    [url http://www.orindasoft.com/public/Java2HTML/com/orindasoft/demo/generated/plsql/simpleExamplesDirectFlightAvailable.java.html]this URL and scroll to the bottom you'll see an example of this technique in use for a BOOLEAN OUT parameter. The relevent code is:
    public String getProcCallStatement()
    236    {
    237    return("DECLARE \n"
    238          +"/* Generated By OrindaBuild 4.0.1919 */ \n"
    239          +"/* Which can be obtained at www.orindasoft.com */ \n"
    240          +"p_fromcity VARCHAR2(32767) := ?; \n"
    241          +"p_tocity VARCHAR2(32767) := ?; \n"
    242          +"p_direct BOOLEAN := null; \n"
    243          +"p_direct_SN SIGNTYPE := null; \n"
    244          +"BEGIN  \n"
    245          +"SIMPLE_EXAMPLES.DIRECT_FLIGHT_AVAILABLE(p_fromcity,p_tocity,p_direct); \n"
    246          +"  \n"
    247          +"IF p_direct IS NULL THEN  \n"
    248          +"  p_direct_SN := 0;  \n"
    249          +"ELSIF p_direct = FALSE THEN  \n"
    250          +"  p_direct_SN := -1;  \n"
    251          +"ELSIF p_direct = TRUE THEN  \n"
    252          +"  p_direct_SN := 1;  \n"
    253          +"END IF;  \n"
    254          +"? := p_direct_SN; \n"
    255          +"END; ");
    256    }     'p_direct' is a boolean variable we use to capture the result of the stored procedure.
    'p_direct_SN' is a variable of SIGNTYPE, a numeric datatype that can have the values -1, 0, or 1. This makes it ideal for representing booleans. The IF statement afte the procedure call sets p_direct_SN based on the value of p_direct. The magic code is in line 254:
    ? := p_direct_sn;
    If you bind '?' as a numeric out parameter you get -1, 0 or 1 back when you run call the stored procedure.
    This technique allows you to call PL/SQL procedures that have boolean parameters without having to write additional PL/SQL code. The only drawback is that you have to work with -1,0 and 1 on the Java side.

    - asker

    I ignore your statements fully. I have a joke here.
    There is one fools' gang in a city and they want to prove that they are not fools. One of them says " If we can find the most intelligent man in the city, then we can no more be called fools." Then on one fine morning, one of the fools sets out on a search. He goes to a taxi-driver and asks him to take him to the most intelligent man in the city. Taking advantage, the taxi fellow roams around the entire city for the whole day and end of the day brings him to the same spot where he met him in the morning.
    Taxi driver says, "Sir! I've not seen anyone who is more intelligent than me in this whole city. To prove this, I ask you a question and you answer me. If you can't answer me, then I'm the most intelligent in the city." Even the fool agrees on this and the Taxi driver continues saying, "We are four in our house. My mother, my wife, my son and who is the fourth one?". The fool couldn't answer that and the taxi driver says "The fourth one is me". the fool accepts his ignorance and sets off from the place to their fools-community gathering.
    In the gathering, this folls explains other fools about his achievement and says that the taxi-driver is the most intelligent in the city. When other persons insist on how he had come that conclusion, he asks the same question to his community as says, "We are four in our house. My mother, my wife, my son and who is the fourth one?". The other fools fail to answer and ask for the answer excitedly. This fools replies, "The taxi driver".
    In the same way as the fool, if I give direct answer to the question, the OP doesn't know the logic behind the answer and then just blindly remembers the answer rather than learning. That is the reason I insisted on doing some search before giving a solution.
    Have a nice day ahead.
    And yeah! Neither the number of posts not you can judge my skills. Rest of the community knows.
    Cheers
