Access 2010 Combo Box Failure on Database Close

Problem: create a combo box with recordsource on table or query; Initially combo box "works" ; i.e when you begin to type values the combo box looks up the first matching value based on the recordsource.
HOWEVER: Once you close the database and reopen this functionality is completely LOST...the values are still in the recordsource, if you click the dropdown all the values are displayed; however when typing in values the combo box no longer gets the first
or any matching record.
Thus the combox is all but useless unless there are very/very few records.
Solutions I have tried:
1. Creating a compleley new datbase (blank) ; a blank form with only a combobox.
2. Importing my forms into a new blank database
3. changing the recordsource settings from queries to tables to sql.
4. running a /decomple on the database
Absolutely nothing I have done works and I have spend hours doing this.
I literally have no idea what is going on here.
Help ...this is a critical issue.
jawsurgeon

Hi Jawsurgeon,
According to the description, the AutoExpand feature provied by comboBox didn't work after you close the database.
Please first check the AutoExpand property is true. And here is a sample database, you can download it from link below:
ComboBoxAutoExpand
Also please check whether the KB below is helpful:
The AutoExpand property may not work when ANSI-92 syntax is enabled and the Combo Box RowSource does not use DISTINCT values
If it still didn't work, I suggest that you repair the Access to see whether the issue was fxied.

    Hi Mahendra,
In case of selecting a default value in a combo, it has 2 parameters to be passed.  Its as below.
    objCombo.Select(0, SAPbouiCOM.BoSearchKey.psk_Index)
Replace this with proper value (1st parameter).  It will work.
I find that you have already used that line.  So you can remove your last line.

  • Hide a data column in combo box?

I want to load a combo box from a database with two values per row (add.Item ?) but I only want one value to be see by the end-user.
    Example:
    Hidden | Shown
    12320  |  Green
    19210  |  Red
    72622  |  Yellow
The user will see the colors but not the numeric values. The numeric values are actually the auto_id for each color in the database. I want to use the auto_id when I save the user's choice to another table instead of the color name.
Right now as soon as the use selects a color I hit the database for the auto_id number - that can't be good.
    Thanks,

    Hello,
You would set the data source for the ComboBox that has your data then set DisplayMember to the field to show in the ComboBox along with ValueMember set to the hidden field. Now say in a button click event use ComboBox1.SelectedValue to get the hidden field,
cast as an integer if that is the data type of the hidden field.
Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help, this will help others who are looking for solutions to the same or similar problem.

  • Access 2010 - How to display data from a table into a text box upon combo box selection?

    Hi
I have a a table with 5 columns: month, year, USD, SGD, BAHT.
I created a form with a combo box for selection of the month and year, and I would like to set adjacent text boxes to show USD, SGD, BAHT information. How can i go about doing that?
From the Q&A here, most of them uses the function similar to this "=[Combo0].[Column](1)" to show the data in the text box, but this would require the combo box to list a whole bunch of details if i were to add in more currency values to the
table. Is it possible to not show this information in the combo box, but still populate data in the textboxes base on a selection on only the "month" and "year" in the combo box.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to show only the month/year in the combo box, we can choose the date, and it will display the value of USD/SGD/BAHT based on the month/year.
If it is, I recommend you try the steps:
Create a form based on your data source table>Add the combo box>combo box wizard>Find a record on my form based on the value I selected my combo box>Add mouth and year to selected fields

  • Trying to filter an entire database using a combo box or text box

    Hi,
I am looking to create a combo box with rows vice columns, then I would like to create a macro or some for form of filter that gives me the option to search within each or all of the selections.
I have created a search function (using a textbox and the button features) that allows me to search for anything in my database using applyfilter. The problem that I ran into with this was that when I hit the might work, but only the first line worked.
So I tried to use a combination box to create a filter of the fields that I want to view for the particular search I need, but I want to select row headers vice columns of information. For example if I have five fields of: Last Name, First Name, SSN, Document
    number and Unique ID.
I want a combination box to show the following field header when I click the drop down option.
    (Last Name
    First Name
    SSN
    Documentation Number
    Unique ID)
Then I would to apply a macro filter feature for files within theses individual fields. I am just getting started in VBA and using Macros, so any help would be awesome!!
If I am too far off target please direct me back, I tend to over think things.
    Thanks in Advance

Dirk Goldgar, I tried to you use the suggested method you gave me. Part of the problem I was having was that I wanted to view the field list, which I now know is very possible thanks to you, but only wanted it to show as one single list of fields.
So took the information you gave me and went on to create a list box instead. I later found out why this was not working either.
In what way was it not working?  You can do the same thing with a list box as I described for a combo box.
I have relationships of tables attached.
I don't understand what you mean by that last statement, or how it's relevant to the discussion.  Do you mean you have multiple different tables that you might want to filter?  So you would need to either (a) first need to select a table from a
list of tables in your database, and only then select a field in that table, or else (b) have a table listing all the data elements you might want to search, with the table and field name of each, and base a list box on that -- then the code to search would
know what table to select from, as well as what field to filter on.
So this info that you provided was very helpful. I will continue to go through the link you provided.
So I can quickly sum up what I need:
    1. A dropdown box that allows me to search any Field List
    2. A textbox that allows me to type in the searchable information for that particular field.
    3. Or some way to build a filter function for the whole list, with a textbox to search the key words.
This is all still a bit unclear to me, because I don't know whether you want to search a particular table, or any of many possible tables in the database.

  • Load Combo Box from MS Access

Me and a co-worker are trying to learn the Designer for a proof of concept (yes, that means newbies). We are currently struggling with loading a dropdown combo box from a table in an MS Access database. We have the connection set up and the field assigned to the control. It populates with the first record from the table, but clicking on the dropdown button does nothing. Is it only populating with one record? Is there a property on the control that is not allowing the list to expand?
I saw another thread in this forum on this topic and the last entry in the thread included the phrase "I GAVE UP" - not very encouraging. This functionality is a must-have and seems pretty basic.
    Any advice?

I have been trying this using a Data Drop-down List and I cannot get it work. I have a data connection set up and instead of selecting Table from the choice I used an SQL query to select only one column in the table. There are three lines in the script some of which are confusing to me.<br /><br />var sDataConnectionName = "DataConnection"; //I got this one. it was easy<br />var sColHiddenValue = "<value>";<br />var sColDisplayText = "<value>";<br /><br />The last two I'm really not sure what to put there. I tried putting the name of the table column in place of each of "<value>". but it doesn't work.<br /><br />What else do I need to do to get it to work?

  • Populating Database values into a combo box in STRUTS Framework

    Hi Guys,
I am currently working on a STRUTS Framework project and I can't get much resources related to the problems that I'm facing.
Currently I need to populate a JSP file's Combo box with database values. What I don't know here is the syntax used to in STRUTS framework to populate the Combo box with database values. Anyone with experience related to this topic, please kindly help me out.

Struts doesn't define anything about the datab layer. You're free to implement how you will.
Struts instead guides you into following an MVC pattern.
You populate a combo box with values from a bean.
So you need to set up a bean for this page to talk to.
That bean can be populated from the database - but at that point you're in java/jdbc code - and away from the struts layer.
    My suggestions
1 - Define a bean to represent the information from the database.
2 - write a method that queries the database, and copies the data into a List of those beans. This will be your Data access layer.
3 - in your action, call that method, and then set the list of beans as a request attribute. Or maybe as a property on a form.
4 - use that list of beans to populate your dropdown box.

  • Converting a pre-Access 2000 database w/ user-level security to Access 2010

    Hi -
An old database was passed down to me and I'm tasked with converting it so that we can use it with Access 2010. Sounds simple. However, I'm blocked in every attempt that I make to convert, export, and, in some cases, modify the database, due to not
having the "appropriate permissions". We (my manager and I) do not know the original owner, and we do not have the original workgroup file. I've had our IT guy check to make sure I am the system admin on my machine in hopes of that making a
difference - I was even able to create new workgroups and add and remove users to and from those groups but when I tried to convert (or save) the database, write some vba code behind the database, create and save new forms, or even update certain tables,
I'm told to contact my system administrator or original owner of the object about giving me the "appropriate permissions" to do either of those things. I'm out of ideas here. I've even had a team of people contribute ideas as to how I can get around
this. I cannot even convert this old database (which is in .mdb format, fyi) to an MDE. Is there any way that the user-level protection can be removed from this database? I'm hoping for an alternative other than to start over from scratch.

    Hi,
As you said that the .accdb format does not support replication or user-level security, we need to use the MDB format in Access 2010. Please try to follow the steps to remove the user-level protection:
1.Start Microsoft Access, and log on as a member of the Admins group.
This can be the administrator account that you created when you secured the database, or it can be any member of the Admins group. Be sure that you’re using your own security-enhanced workgroup information file when starting Access.
    2.Open the database.
3.On the Tools menu, point to Security, and then click User And Group Permissions.
4.In the User And Group Permissions dialog box, assign full permissions to the Users group for the database and all the objects in the database.
Because all users are automatically part of the Users group, this step has the effect of concealing security again.
5.Click the Users tab, click Admin in the Name box, and then click Clear Password.
Clearing the password for the Admin user disables the Logon dialog box that is displayed when you start Access. All users are automatically logged on as the Admin user the next time they start Access. This step disables the Logon dialog box for all databases
that are using the same workgroup information file.
    6.Restart Access.
7.Create a new database, and then import all objects from the security-enhanced database.
You can accomplish this easily by using the Import command (File menu, Get External Data submenu).

  • Access 2010 table has too many fields for web database - how to split into two web-compatible tables?

    Hello,
I'm in the process of converting an Access 2010 database into a web database and I'm having some trouble. I have a table which has 236 fields, which is more than the 220 field limit for web-compatible tables. I have tried to split this table into two tables
with a one-to-one relationship, but web tables can only use lookups as relationships. I've tried to connect the tables with a lookup and then synthesize a one-to-one relationship by using data macros but I'm not having much luck.
I realize that 236 fields is a lot, but it must be set up this way because each field represents a tasks and is a yes/no box to verify that the task has been completed - and the records are different employees for whom which the tasks need to be completed.
Could someone please help me figure out a way to make this table web compatible?
    Thank you,
    Ryan

  • Unable to read data in Excel 2010/2013 from encrypted Access 2010/2013 database

A customer has an Access database (.accdb), which was encrypted/given a database password in Access 2013. It should be possible to read that data from Excel 2010/2013, but when clicking on Data-->From Access
and the correct path is put in and the correct database password has been entered, Excel just keeps prompting for the database password. This happens with both Excel 2010 and 2013.
The database password supplied is correct as evidenced by opening the database in Access 2013 using the same database password.
A colleague in a separate company has found that a separate .accdb file he has recently encrypted also has the same problem as above, yet a .accdb file encrypted ages ago
    is readable from Excel.
How do I get Excel 2010/2013 to read the data from the encrypted .accdb file, please?

Since Access 2010 the encryption algorithm has changed:

Follow the next steps to apply an encryption method that will allow you to (programmatically) connect to the database:
    1. Decrypt the database
    2. Change the encryption method:
        - In Access Options select 'Client Settings'
        - Scroll down to section 'Advanced'
        - 'Encryption Method': select option 'Use legacy encryption (..'
        - Click 'OK'
    3. Encrypt the database
