Accessibility Alt Text problem

I have an acronym in the PDF and want to create alternate text for it. I believe I understand the procedure to do so. I'm using the Read Out Loud feature in Acrobat Pro 9 to test it. The reader reads the alternate text first , but then it also reads the acronym itself. It's like an echo, except that the alt text reading is correct, and the second reading of the acronym is incorrect pronounciation.
Instructions in the help menu and on the web are very scimpy. I sure hope that someone can help with this.

Jay,
Here's an overview —
(1) Screen capture of an acronym in the text flow.
(2) Screen capture depicting use of Alternate Text.
(3) Screen capture depicting use of Expansion Text.
(4) Screen capture of PDF export to accessible text.
And, on to a synopsis of "breaking out" the pesky acronym.
"Break'n out" the acronym.
Open the Tags panel. Locate the container ('box') for the text string containing the acronym.
Now, New Tags must be made. In my example the string is content tagged by <Body> (which role maps to <P>).
The <Span> is a grouping element.
I added two <Span> tags. One is placed above and one below the original <Span> tag.
Next, selecting the Container 'holding' the text string I used the menu to Delete Tag.
On the PDF page the Select Tool is used to select the text string "Some text that, " (note that the space is included).
With focus back on the Tags panel and the first of the 3 <Span> tags selected "Create Tag from Selection" (on the Options menu). A Container with the selected text is now under this first <Span> tag. Repeat for the text string "BTW, " (again, include the space). Move focus to the Tags panel and select the 2nd <Span> tag then "Create Tag from Selection". Do this all again for the remaining text.
Now there are 3 in-line 'steps' under the <Body> tag which 'breaks out' the acronym.
With this the text string that is the acronym can be given Expansion Text.
Select the Container having the acronym. From the Options menu select Properties.
In the Properties dialog select the Content tab.  Spell out the acronym in the Expansion Text field then tab out of the field to "set" the entry. Close the Properties dialog. Save As.
Okay, one acronym down! Now, we do it again, and again, and ....
Be well...

  • Tags, alt text, and PDF accessibility

    I'm thoroughly confused. I just finished the layout for a 176-page book in ID and I'm trying to tag the book for PDF accessibility. I read that it's better to tag in ID before you export to PDF. My problem is, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do or how to do it, and everything I'm reading is confusing me even more. I'm getting nowhere.
    I'm not expecting a full course on this, but can someone please answer a few questions to give me a kick start (I may even ask the wrong questions). 1.) How do you add alt text to graphics in ID, or Acrobat?  2.) How do you add a tag in ID. I mean, I can add a tag but I don't know where or why I'm adding it.  3.) How do you manually tag a file in Acrobat 9 Pro or edit the auto tagging once it's done?
    I'm using the most recent versions of ID and Acrobat Pro, and the most recent version of Mac OSX.
    Thank you.

    I too have been trying to figure this out and have followed the steps
    to add alt text to InDesign before exportign to PDF. I just can't see the alt text in either PDF  or in a browser displaying thee PDF fiel - I  know the tagged text is there because when I open
    the "touch up Reading order" dialog in the
    accesibility tab of Acrobat - the image displays with the appropriate  Alt text. I' checked the accessibility otpion in the browser as well [expand all alt text for images] but I still don't see the alt text when I mouse over teh image - what am I missign here?

  • Acrobat X Pro:  Accessibility Report says No Alt Text for image but there is

    I have added the alternate text for images on my pdf but the accessibility report is still giving me errors stating that there is no alternate text.  Does anyone have any idea why?  I have checked and the alt text is there.  I don't understand this.
    Thank you.

    I assume when you click on the error it is taking you to the location where the error is.  Not seeing the document it is hard to tell... do you have a multi-page document and when you click on the error does it take you to the location where that problem is?
    There are several things that could cause this problem.  The Figure or other tag that contains the alt text must have content. It cannot be an empty tag.
    It also cannot have another Tag inside of it containing the content.  There must be some actual content directly within the Tag with the alt text, not nested inside another Tag, if that makes any sense.
    Or, there may be another Figure Tag that has no content. That, too, will generate an error.
    If neither of those suggestions work, if you post the file I can probably find the problem.

  • Problem with Alt Text output from thumbnail image of Lightbox widget

    I’m having a problem with the Lightbox widget not producing alternative text based on the image properties.  I’ve set ALT text for the image properties on both the larger Ligtbox image as well as the thumbnail.  But the HTML output from Muse does not include the ALT text on the thumbnail version of the image.  Here’s an example:
        <div class="popup_anchor">
           <div class="Thumb popup_element clearfix" id="u4409"><!-- group -->
            <a class="anchor_item grpelem" id="untitled"></a>
            <div class="grpelem" id="u4433"><!-- image -->
             <img id="u4433_img" src="/images/n0060292x292.jpg" alt="" width="292" height="292" />
    This may be a problem that came in a previous release of Muse.  I have a few older examples where ALT text is produced, but it’s no longer updated if I update the Image Properties.

    I'm seeing the same problem. Looks like a bug to me. Any ideas as to how we can get this on Adobe's bug fix list?

  • Alt text accessibility

    Greetings,
    Enjoying Edge Animate quite a bit, but am looking to make it more accessible.
    1. How does one add alt text to images in Edge Animate?
    2. Assuming that images can be given alt text, how does one set up the animation so one can 'tab key' (or give focus) to a given image/button?
    The end goal is to allow the Windows8 screen reader, Narrator, the ability to read the alt text when an img/button is tabbed to.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Elaine,
    Thank you so much for your quick reply and for pointing out the Accessibility section. I also found the Alt: input under the Image property, though I had to change my image from 'div' to 'img' in order to enable the Alt: input, makes sense.
    Despite these features, I'm still not having the success I hope to have while using either Win7 or Win8 Narrator/screen reader.
    In the following animation, I have given the top 4 images both titles and alt text, but neither version of Win Narrator can find/read the text.
    I should be able to hit the tab key, tab to one of the images, and have Narrator read the alt text/title, but this is not happening.

  • ALT text not appearing in PDF for EPS files

    Hi,
    I have a created a document in InDesign CS5.5 which has images and text. the document should be accessibility complaint.
    The document has images which are in PSD, tiff, eps and PNG files. I have applied the Alt text for each images.
    After I export the document as PDF, when I mouse over the images, the Alt text is appearing for all the image formats except EPS file format. But Acrobat reads the Alt text for the image.
    I am wondering why the Acrobat is not showing the ALT text for EPS file formats when i mouse over the image.
    Is anyone facing the same problem? should I do anything in the settings?
    please help.
    Regards

    The EPS image is not created in photoshop. the image is created in Illustrator.
    Also, what do you mean by Single image? can you please explain a bit more about that?

  • How to stop IE from displaying alt text as tool tip when mouse over image.

    I have random images being [B]echo[/B] by a PHP script on a page.
    [CODE]<img src="<?php echo $randomImage; ?>" alt="This is alt text" />[/CODE]
    The problem is every time you scroll over the image, IE spits out the alt text.
    I understand the alt text are meant for accessibility.
    So how can I stop this IE behavior with out compromising accessibilty?
    Thanks everyone.

  • A Few SEO Questions: Alt="" text and file/folder names.

    I've been reading about the Dark Art of SEO and frankly, a lot of it is more confusing than I anticipated.  Anyway, I'll summarise a bit here.I have read that:
    File/folder names are better with meaningful words and hyphenated words.  so DCM000123.jpg in a folder called galimg would be better as: /gallery-images/painting-title-here.jpg
    Alt="" text can add to the content of your pages.
    My thinking underneath this relates to a gallery site I built with around 200 individual paintings in it.  So the site has a lot of content but not a lot of text.  I wonder if I should start trawling through all of this to change the file names and folders and add alt="" text more meaningfully to help with SEO?
    So if my thinking is OK, here are the questions.
    How would you put the alt="" text on individual images?  I imagine that it should just be a straight-forward, what-you-see description?  But there are a few other options.  Suppose I have an image that the artist has titled, "Cattle on a Hill" and it's an oil on canvas.  I could make that into,
    alt="Oil on Canvas: Cattle on a Hill" or
    alt="Cattle on a Hill" or
    alt="A group of cows grazing in pasture under moonlight." or
    Suppose I have 20 images in a portrait gallery:
    alt="Portrait.  Oil on canvas: Joe Bloggs" or
    alt="Portrait.  Joe Bloggs" or
    alt="Man with grey hair wearing a blue shirt sitting on a bench" or
    alt="Portrait painting.  Oil on canvas. Joe Bloggs: Man with gray hair wearing a blue shirt sitting on a bench"
    The second part of the question also includes the problem that if I have 20 images in a single gallery page and I put "Portrait painting" in each alt="" text is that going to look like key word stuffing?
    Now on to the file name thing.  Should the file names be portrait-painting-01 and so on or should they be Cattle-on-hill or what?
    Final question: am I making too much of all this?
    Thanks
    Martin

    First of all, stay away from spaces in file names AT ALL COST.
    The examples you cited would look like:
    alt="Oil%20on%20Canvas:%20Cattle%20on%20a%20Hill" or
    alt="Cattle%20on%20a%20Hill" or
    alt="A%20group%20of%20cows%20grazing%20in%20pasture%20under%20moonlight."
    to an SE crawler.
    If you really want effective picutres, use Photoshop or Fireworks to embed metadata and THEN add them to your site.
    Alt tags means the text that would appear if the image didn't for some reason. It also helps with accessibility for visually impaired viewers who use plug-ins to allow their browser to "speak" the images to them when the page loads.
    <img src="img/example-1.jpg" width="128" height="160" alt="example-1.jpg" />
    Above is an example of how to add alt text. Dreamweaver actually loads the alt tag automatically unless you've turned it off somehow.
    Either put the info in the Alt box in the properties panel, or in code view, add it between the quotes.
    To the second part of your question, Alt tags are meant for SEO with the images only (Like when you search for images of a certain name or containing certain tags)
    and really have little effect on the page SEO itself. For that type of optimization you want Keywords, and Descriptors in the <head> portion of the
    individual page:
    <meta name="google-site-verification" content="Optimizer code would go here" />
    <meta name="Description" content="Page name, site name, business name, location, phone number, etc. goes here"/>
    <meta name="Keywords" content="Restaurant, Sports bar, Catering, Hotel, Gallery, Car Dealer, Exterminator or whatever describes the site and page as well as content of the pages"/>
    <meta name="author" content="your name here"/>
    <meta name="robots" content="index, follow"/> (This tells search engine crawlers to index this page and each one you add it to,  and follow them site wide)
    <meta name="revisit-after" content="7 days"/> (This tells the crawler when to revisit for updates after it has indexed the site)
    To your last question. No, you're not making too big a deal out of it, if you're talking about exposure for a business. If it's a personal gallery of your favorite vacation pictures? You just might be.

  • Adding Alt Text to Images

    Hi
    I would like to add Alt text to a number of images on my site.
    I have been sucessful in achieving this by selecting either the image on the page or in the asset panel, right clicking and then going to Edit Image Properties.
    However I have a number of pages which contain Image compositions  initially created in Ilustrator then saved as flat jpeg or png images inserted using Fill into a Blank Composition Wigit. The images all have triggers on top.
    All of this works well
    However , I seem unable in any way, to by right clicking on the images either on the page in Design mode or by highlighting the file in the Asset panel  to bring up the Edit Image Properties dialogue box for the images (as part of the wigit composition).
    I get a dialogue box by right clicking but one that contains Paste /Select Same /Arrange /Lock etc
    Is it not possible to Add Alt Text to such combined images in a wigit  , Should anyAlt Text be added earlier in the Design , Fill or construction stage
    Any pionters or help would be very welcome
    Thank You

    Hi
    I didn't get any replies to my post, but think I may have been able to resolve my own question.
    I had been using the Fill with Image option to accurately place the images in the Wigit. This process as I mentioned does not seem to allow one to access the Edit Image Properties dialoge properties window by right clicking the image.
    However when I deleted the image as a Fill and use the Place feature to insert the combined image with  the same X-Y co-ordinates (and did a liltte bit of work to get the Wigit triggers to the front) right clicking now seems to allow access the Edit Image Properties
    Success - I think !
    Thanks

  • Image title tooltip (not alt text) doesn't work

    There are half a dozen or so existing help requests mentioning alt text or discussing problems with the Google Toolbar add-on, but this is not my issue, so I am opening a separate help ticket.
    If you are here about "alt" text, first read any of the posts explaining that "alt" text isn't supposed to appear, it's just a quirk of IE that it sometimes does, FF4 is correct and does what the standards ask and what other browsers do. You want "title" text. The best explanation seems to be:

    Neither was I. I *did* get them in safe mode, but I did a lot of resetting and mucking about without any luck. In the end, after doing a text diff between safe mode and not, of the Troubleshooting information (in the Help menu), I found that the issue might be Direct2D-related, and changed the flag "gfx.direct2d.disabled" to true in about:config. I now have tooltips back but a less efficient FF4.

  • Alt text for photos not appearing

    Hi,
    I tagged a large document in InDesign (because Acrobat Pro's feature is too unpredictable).
    I assigned alt text to all the photos, but when I hover my cursor over them while viewing the
    exported PDF, only some are showing up.
    It turns out that large photos that I have on chapter divider pages are the only ones
    not showing their alt text, even though they are set up in InDesign structure view the
    same way as all other photos.
    Can anyone think of a reason why this is happening? The only thing I can think of
    that's different about them is that they originally are from a master page. But because
    each photo is unique, they've already been disconnected from the original master page.
    Thanks,
    Jane

    I just figured out that those photos had been set to a blending mode of Multiply
    because an earlier iteration of the design used transparency. But to the eye, they
    look like normal photos, so I didn't realize they were set to Multiply.
    This solved the problem but it's not heartening news. What if my graphic legitimately
    did have a blending mode set? What would my workaround be if I needed to set Alt Text
    for those images?

  • How to define alt text for an anchored frame in FrameMaker 11?

    What is the procedure in FrameMaker 11 to include alt text for anchored frames? We need to produce tagged PDF output that is accessibility compliant; this output must include alt text for each image in the document that a screen reader can read out.
    In previous FrameMaker versions, it was possible to define alt text as follows:
    Select the frame and choose Graphics > Object Properties.
    Click Object Attributes.
    In the Text Attributes section, add your alt text and actual text, and then click Set.
    The FrameMaker online help still describes this same procedure, at http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WSd817046a44e105e21e63e3d11ab7f7960b-7f0f.htm l. However, I see that in FrameMaker 11, what you get on choosing Graphics > Object Properties has completely changed from previous versions, and I cannot see Object Attributes.
    Where is the alt text defined for an object in FrameMaker 11?

    In the Anchored Frame panel, click on the Object Attributes button.

  • Adding alt text to composition widget images?

    How do I add alt text and image titles for Composition>Blank widgets images? When I control-click the image, the context menu does not include these options.

    I'm not sure how to describe the problem I'm having, so here's a screen shot of my composition widget with images placed (it's a bit sloppy, but I'm running out of patience for fine-tuning until I get this situation figured out).
    After file>placing a thumbnail image in a trigger, I file>placed the corresponding image in its target area. I then clicked on the second trigger, placed the thumbnail. But the second trigger didn't click through to the second target panel, which would have been a grey panel. So I thought I maybe I should just go ahead and place the second target image anyway, but it just sits there on top.  I did this for three images. The first target image placed is on the bottom, then the second, and the third placed target image is on top. So I can't figure out how to click from one target panel to the next to place each image, getting it to correspond with its proper trigger. Does this make any sense yet?
    You can see how they look like they are separate and layered, and when sizing, or moved in any way, they are become ungrouped, rather than as a group such as when I used the fill option. Last, when I click on the trigger thumbnail images, the triggers just aren't activating the target panels at all. I'm at a complete loss on this. I think I've tried everthing, but obviously I'm missing something. Thanks again.

  • Accessible pdf alt text read twice by on-screen reader

    We are working on a math text book. We are currently creating an accessible pdf in addition to a text book for people who are visually impaired. We have ordered our text such that the on-screen reader reads the pages in the correct order and have tagged sections appropriately. However, some paragraphs contain several symbols that the on-screen reader cannot comprehend and for those we have made figures and inserted alt text that literally explains the equations. The problem is that the on-screen reader will first read the alt text but then will proceed to read the text itself that we are trying to replace. Thus many paragraphs are read twice. Please advise.

    Hi,
    Alternate Descriptions:
    PDF documents may be enhanced by providing alternate descriptions for images, formulas, or other items that do not translate naturally into text.
    But, you have content that does translate naturally into text. So, you get the alternate text entry and the content that is naturally renderable.
    Consider use Replacement Text (Actual Text) or, when appropriate for abbreviations/acronyms, Expansion Text.
    However, if the characters are naturally renderable, there is no need for any of these.
    Do apply the PDF element for "formula" to the equation content.
    Only use alternate text descriptions for image/graphic objects present in the PDF.
    Avoid having other tagged content being associated with a child tag of a tag that has alternate or actual applied.
