Accessing Class Methods

I am working on a little project and am at a sticking point.
What I want to do is access a method that resides in the class that contains the "main" method. I want to access the method from another class. So, I do not want to instantiate another of that class because that opens another "copy" of the program. I just want to access a method in that class.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks for any assistance.
Mike

how do I add an actionListener to a component that is declared static
inside the static method....cannot use "this" keyword?What do you mean declared static inside a static method? To the best of my knowledge, the only modifier (if that's the correct term) you can apply to variable declarations within methods (static or not) is final.
Anyway, taking a guess at what you want:
public class Main {
    private static final Component x = ;
    public static final main(final String[] args) {
        x.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
            public void actionPerformed(final ActionEvent e) {
                magicMethod();
    private static void magicMethod() {
}While you can't call an instance method from a static method (without having an instance) you can do the reverse. In this case, I'm not even doing the reverse, I'm calling a static method from an anonymous class instance declared within a static method.

    I have this class linked to a movieclip. I am attemping to

    var _easingSpeed:Number = 0.1;
    var dx:Number = targetX - this.x;

    What am I missing here?

    quote:
    Please help me understand why. I have the easeToLoc setup to

    The syntax of ActionScript dictates that you refer to the
    callback function in the way that I pointed out. The only argument
    that is passed to that listener function is an event object. This
    is what it expects, nothing more. Take a look at the
    docs
    for more info, specifically the categories under Programming
    ActionScript 3.0 -> Handling Events.
    Looking at navPanelClose() and navPanelOpen(), the values
    you're trying to pass seem more like constants to me, not
    variables. So why not declare them as constants within this class
    and refer to them as such within easeToLoc()? If you truly want to
    use variables, perhaps creating a separate utility class to handle
    this logic will work better.
    When trying to access a method within one class from another
    ...let's say you want to access myMethod() within class MyAClass
    from class MyBClass. You could:
    1. Declare myMethod() as static and then refer to it from
    anywhere after importing MyAClass. So you can call
    MyAClass.myMethod() without having to instantiate MyAClass. This is
    what you're trying to do here, I think.
    2. Have class MyBClass extend MyAClass where myMethod() is
    public or protected and MyBClass is in the same package as MyAClass
    when it's declared as protected. For this to work you'd have to
    instantiate MyBClass.

  • How to access a method of a class which just known class name as String

    Hi,
    Now I have several class and I want to access the method of these class. But what I have is a String which contain the complete name of the class.
    For example, I have two class name class1and class2, there are method getValue in each class. Now I have a String containing one class name of these two class. I want to access the method and get the return value.
    How could I do?
    With Class.forName().newInstance I can get a Object. but it doesn't help to access and execute the method I want .
    Could anybody help me?
    Thanks

    Or, if Class1 and Class2 have a common parent class or interface (and they should if you're handling them the same way in the same codepath)...Class c = Class.forName("ClassName");
    Object o = c.newInstance(); // assumes there's a public no-arg constructor
    ParentClassOrInterface pcoi = (ParentClassOrInterface)o;
    Something result = pcoi.someMethod(); Or, if you're on 5.0, I think generics let you do it this way: Class<ParentClassOrInterface> c = Class.forName("ClassName");
    // or maybe
    Class<C extends ParentClassOrInterface> c = Class.forName("ClassName");
    ParentClassOrInterface pcoi = c.newInstance();
    Something result = pcoi.someMethod();

  • Access DataControls methods in a java class

    Hi All,
    Jdeveloper Version 11.1.5
    I have created DataControls for SessionFacade web service.
    Inside the datacontrol there is a method getAllDepartments() which have a Return type which includes DaertmentId,DepartmentName,....
    I want to know how can i access this method inside a Java Class and create a list of only departmentId.

    You would need to add the method in the data control as a method action in your pageDef.
    After that, you could access the method as mentioned above.
    Thanks,

  • How to Access Protected Method of a Class

    Hi,
         I need to access a Protected method (ADOPT_LAYOUT) of class CL_REIS_VIEW_DEFAULT.
    If i try to call that method by using class Instance it is giving error as no access to protected class. Is there any other way to access it..

    Hi,
        You can create a sub-class of this class CL_REIS_VIEW_DEFAULT, add a new method which is in public section and call the method ADOPT_LAYOUT of the super-class in the new method. Now you can create an instance of the sub-class and call the new sub-class method.

  • Static methods in data access classes

    Are we getting any advantage by keeping functions of DAOs (to be accessed by Session Beans) static ?

    I prefer to have a class of static methods that
    require a Connection to do their work. Usually, there
    is a SessionBean that 'wraps' this DAO. The method
    signatures for the SSB are the same, minus the need
    for a Connection, which the SSB gets before delegating
    to the Static Class.Uggh, passing around a connection. I've had to refactor a bunch of code that used this pattern. We had classes in our system that took a class in their constructor simply because one of their methods created an object that needed the connection. Bad news--maintenance nightmare--highly inflexible.
    What we've done is create ConnectionFactory singletons that are used throughtout the application in order to get connections to the database. All connection factory implementations implement the same interface so they can be plugged in from other components at runtime.
    In my opinion, classes that use connections should manage them themselves to ensure proper cleanup and consistent state. By using a factory implementation, we simply provide the DAO classes the means by which they can retrieve connections to the database and even the name of the database that needs to be used that is pluggable. The DAO classes do their own connection management.
    For similar reasons, I eschew the static method concept. By using class methods, you make it difficult to plug in a new implementation at runtime. I much prefer the singleton pattern with an instance that implements a common interface instead of a class full of static methods.
    I recently needed to dynamically plug in new connection factory implementation so that we could use JNDI and DataSources within the context of the application server (pooled connections) but use direct connections via the Driver manager for unit testing (so the application server didn't need to be running). Because of the way this was coded, I simply changed the original factory to be an abstract factory and changed the getInstance() method to return a different implementation based on the environment (unit test vs live). This was painless and didn't require changing a single line of client code.
    If I had to do this using the previous code that I refactored, I would have had to change about 200 jsp pages and dozens of classes that were making calls to the static method of the previous factory or hacked in something ugly and hard to maintain.
    YMMV

    Several comments :
    1- is there any reason to have blank chars inserted after the path ? Seems that you already have a problem there. If possible, try to solve the problem at the source
    2- the end of line char is usually CR (Carriage Return, aka ASCII char 13 = $0D = Control-D). But LF (Line Feed = 10 = $0A = control-A) is also used (platform dependent). In LV, you can use the "Concatenate strings" function to add/insert control chars (found in the String Control Palette). However, this will not solve your problem of unwanted added blank chars at the end of your string.
    3- you can use the Trim white space.vi (in the "Additionnal string functions" sub-palette) to remove ALL the spaces in your string
    4- you can build your own "end space remover" function. :
    reverse the string, wire to a "Match pattern" function, use " +" (space + "+") to search for any number of spaces, reverse again the "after substring".
    5- there is no point 5 :-)
    You may find interesting description of ASCII chars here

    Can somebody tell me that how can i access private method of an inner class using reflection.
    There is a scenario like
    class A
    class B
    private fun() {
    now i want to use method fun() of an inner class inside third class i.e "class c".
    Can i use reflection in someway to access this private method fun() in class c.

    I suppose for unit tests, there could be cases when you need to access private methods that you don't want your real code to access.
    Reflection with inner classes can be tricky. I tried getting the constructor, but it kept failing until I saw that even though the default constructor is a no-arg, for inner classes that aren't static, apparently the constructor for the inner class itself takes an instance of the outer class as a param.
    So here's what it looks like:
            //list of inner classes, if any
            Class[] classlist = A.class.getDeclaredClasses();
            A outer = new A();
            try {
                for (int i =0; i < classlist.length; i++){
                    if (! classlist.getSimpleName().equals("B")){
    //skip other classes
    continue;
    //this is what I mention above.
    Constructor constr = classlist[i].getDeclaredConstructor(A.class);
    constr.setAccessible(true);
    Object inner = constr.newInstance(outer);
    Method meth = classlist[i].getDeclaredMethod("testMethod");
    meth.setAccessible(true);
    //the actual method call
    meth.invoke(inner);
    } catch (Exception e) {
    throw new RuntimeException(e);
    Good luck, and if you find yourself relying on this too much, it might mean a code redesign.

  • Access arrayobject from class method

    Hi,
    Can anyone tell me how to access the variables in an object array from a static method of the same class?
    In another class i create a object array
    MyClass[][] myObjectArray = new MyClass[3][3]
    In MyClass there is a declaration:
    public int myInt = 1
    and a class method:
    public static myMethod(){
    int intVar = "this is where i would like to read the value of myInt for each object, something like myObjectArray[0][0].myInt + myObjectArray[1][2].myInt, but it does not work"
    I guess something with "this" or "super", but dont know how.
    Thanks,
    /Thomas

    It should obviously be impossible to access any Instance
    in a class-method.
    You could pass it as an parameter though:
    public static void myMethod(MyClass[][] myCl)

  • Access global data of report in global class methods?

    Hi all,
    I have defined one global class in SE24 and i am using methods of this class in report program.
    Can i access global data of my report program in class methods directly without declaring it as IMPORT
    parameter?
    Thanks,
    Apita

    Hi,
    Well, now you did confuse me: first you asked about using global data of a report program in global class (created in SE24), and the answer is: no, you can't directly access the global data of another program in a method of global class (yes, you should pass them via importing parameters), and you shouldn't even consider using indirect means of doing so via special form of ASSIGN statement reserved for internal use by SAP. The ASSIGN will not work if someone reuses the global class elsewhere in the system without loading your report. Don't ever program such atrocious dependencies in global class...
    And now you ask about the use "in method implementation in report program"..? Just to be sure - you can't program the implementation of a global class method in a report program.
    You can program a local class inheriting from a global class and redefine/re-implement methods of such global super-class in a report program. Global data of report program, including the selection screen, would be directly accessible to such local class. It would still not be a good idea to use this access:
    Conversely, within an encapsulated unit, that is, within a class, you should avoid accessing more global data directly. Within methods, you should generally modify attributes of the class only. Write access to global data outside the class is not recommended. Accessing data in this way should only be done using specially marked methods, if at all. The use of methods of a class should not evoke any side effects outside the class itself.
    cheers

  • Please Help!!! Problems access other classes methods

    I am having a problem accessing another classes methods varibles. I have tried a number of ways but with no success. Here is my problem:
    I have the main(), from there it's calls the class GetVar(), GetVar stores info in Class HousingForVar(), and finially, I have a class TryinToTalkToHousing() that I use to access HousingForVar()'s methods. I know I can use the keyword new but if I do that then it erases over the data I put in. Please can anyone help, this has been driving me nutz all day. Thank you in advance.

    I don't use 1.5, so you'll have to convert it back, but see if you can follow the flow of this

  • Php5 static class method access syntax error

    Dreamweaver is complaining about this syntax
    $class = 'ClassName';
    $class::method(); // static method
    Is there a way to omit these error warnings?

    Thanks for pointing out the reference to the change in PHP syntax.
    To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to turn off the syntax checking. You can turn off code hints, but that doesn't have any effect on the syntax checker.
    I suggest that you file a bug report to Adobe using the form at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform. Include the reference to the syntax change with your report.

  • In webdynpro ,Passing field symbols as values to class methods

    Hi
    Please tell me the ways of accessing database in webdynpro abap(not directly). I am calling Class method for accessing database. As currently I am directly accessing database in my webdynpro application. I have created a class and method for the same.
    In my method I want to use select statement which will return table with values to webdynpro application. So for select statement(Calling Method) I need to use my field symbol values as where in clause .
    Could anyone please help with example code?
    Thanks,

    data: in_line type ref to data.
    CREATE DATA in_line LIKE LINE OF <dyn_tab>.
      ASSIGN in_line->* TO <dyn_wa>.
    You can create a data reference and assign it to a field symbol and change the values. direclty passing field symbols is not possible.
