Accessing Shared Resources of another computer

Hi,
Im migrating a program in visual basic to java. I need help on a class or functions that views shared resources on another computer just like as windows command "net view".
Someone told me to use Runtime.getRuntime().exec("net view PC"); But I need it also to run in linux and I don't want it to be OS dependent. Is there any existing API for this?
Thanks,
valcaro

Again you can not use a 'shared' resource if you do not have access from the other box.
It doesn't matter what you do in java - it just will not work.
In the same way you can't talk to another computer if there is no link (network) between them.
So do you have that access in the first place?
Windows file sharing is possible from linux. The easiest way to do it is to set it up on the box as an admin. And there are a number of complications with that and I seriously doubt that it is viable to do that via a java app.
If you just want to communicate then do so. And file access is easily done with FTP.
I suppose that you could, yourself, replicate the interface that windows uses for file sharing. It would take a lot of work with an a minimum a very good understanding of how windows does it and which would require you to learn with packet sniffing (since I seriously doubt this is documented.) You could tear apart one of the linux solutions that implement it as well. But regardless a lot of work.

    hi,
i already tried using Process, Runtime........ using "net view command" and parsing its OutputStream for results. Its fine and working in windows. Using that makes my program dependent to Windows...
The program detects what OS the JVM is running on. I could make an if-else statement and add another set of command for linux(samba scripts). But doing this make things complicated.
Is there any other way to this, like a Standard way. Like using sockets and ports and using only java native API?
    thanks,

    Thanks

Opening the web browser, you can specify the hostname and the port configured to listen the incoming call.
    For example:
    https://hostname:port_number/em
    or
    https://ip_address:port_number/em
you can get information about the information that you need from the "emctl"
    emctl status dbconsole

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click Details then type facebook in the search field then remove all facebook related items.
Now empty the Safari cache. Press Command + Option + E on your keyboard.
Quit and relaunch Safari. Try accessing your Facebook page.
If that didn't help, click History from the Safari menu bar then click Clear History.

To access a DVD or CD on another computer:
Make sure both computers are on the same network (wired or wireless), and the DVD or CD Sharing software is installed on the computer with the optical drive.
Make sure the computer with the optical drive is set up to share the disc.
On a computer with Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sharing, and then select the “DVD or CD Sharing” checkbox. Select “Ask me before allowing others to use my DVD drive” if you want to be notified when a computer tries to access the drive.
On a computer with Windows XP or Vista: Open the DVD or CD Sharing control panel and select “Enable Remote DVD or CD.” Select “Ask me before allowing others to use my DVD drive” if you want to be notified when a computer tries to access the drive.
Insert the disc into the optical drive.
On the computer without the optical drive, select Remote Disc under Devices in a Finder window sidebar. If you see the “Ask to use” button, click it.

If you are using two Macs you can try to do this via Target Disk Mode. Info here:

  • How to access Time Machine from Another Computer?

My daughter's iBook went down and is in the shop for repair and we want to access her Time Machine back up from another computer. Does anyone know if there is any way to do that?

Time Machine won't do it as far as I can tell.
However, you can access the backups through Finder.
Warning - you *do not* want to do anything but copy out files - no deletes, moves, renames, no nuttin... Doing so will screw up the backups for any future Time Machine use!
If the backups are on an external disk, then just navigate to the folder Backups.backupdb/yourMachineName there you will find each backup by date/time with the contents of the system at that time.
If the backups are to a Time Capsule you need to mount the backups - the sparsebundle file - first then examine the folder Backups.backupdb/yourMachineName.
Time Machine does have a 'Browse Other Time Machine Disks' option, but as far a I can exercise it it only looks at other disks with backups for the same machine.
Again _only copy_ out files. Normally one should only use Time Machine, but here you can't - so be cautious.

  • Can't access my mac from another computer

Ok, i have been able to access my G5 mac using Tiger from my G4 PB using tiger in the past.
I installed Leporad (family pack) on both machines. Now i can't access the G5 from the PB. the settings use to be correct. I kind of gave up, but i just would never get the log in or see the G5.
Today, i finally had the oppurtunity to try using the Back to My Mac feature. My G5 was on at home and i had a wireless connection at work and needed a file on my G5. so i went to the shared section in the side bar and it wasn't there to access.
When i got home i tried again. This time i could see the G5 in the side bar, but could not tell if it was through the internet or if i was seeing it through my wireless network.
when i tried to access using the back to my mac by clicking on the shared volume in the side bar, i could not access it, it finally gave me an error message saying that the server may not be available.
the weird thing is, if i choose to share screen, i could access the G5. I would get a log in window and log in no problem.
the setting in my shared preference seem to be the same for both computers.
any idea where to start on figuring this out.

Do you have a .Mac account? And are both Macs setup to use the .Mac account? Without a .Mac account, the Back-to-My-Mac feature is not going to work, as you need .Mac to act as the middle man in establishing the connection.
In addition, does your work have a corporate firewall? If it does, they most likely block the networking ports that BTMM uses.
When i got home i tried again. This time i could see the G5 in the side bar, but could not tell if it was through the internet or if i was seeing it through my wireless network.
Very likely this is local LAN via Bonjour.
when i tried to access using the back to my mac by clicking on the shared volume in the side bar, i could not access it, it finally gave me an error message saying that the server may not be available.
Do you have your Firewall enabled? Security System Preferences
Did you enable Screen Sharing (I'm guessing you did, but I figure it is worth asking) Sharing System Preferences
NOTE: I do not have a .Mac account, and my use of Screen Sharing has been just one or 2 experiments, but I figured I could at least ask some questions that might uncover something useful.

  • Accessing hard drive on another computer on home network

I have an external hard drive connected to my iMac that I want to access from my Macbook over my home network. Through Finder,I choose the iMac and all I can see is the shared folder on the iMac - no internal hard drive or the external hard drive comes up. Thanks

I am surprised the iMac has no password....
Try this: On the iMac, open System Preferences / Accounts. The accounts are listed on the right. Click on the lock, bottom left. You will be prompted for the password. Can you continue with the password space left blank?

  • I downloaded a song onto my computer which has now broken, how do I access that song on another computer

I downloaded a song via itunes on my computer and now the hard drive has gone.  How do I find that song on my daughters computer.  We use the same account but her itunes has different songs on than mine.  I have the receipt to show I purchased so can I download it without purchasing it again.  It's not a song she wants but just need to get it onto a disk for our Nativity tomorrow.

Is it hidden by Parental Controls? iTunes>Preferences>Parental Controls
Next try using the search feature to try to find it since the Purchased section is saying it is on your computer.

  • Newbie: help with accessing itunes account on another computer.

I've got itunes installed fully working on my computer.
Yesterday, I realised I could install itunes on my laptop and it automatically synced in with all my music and podcasts - great!
However, when I attempted to use itunes on my laptop today, none of the music or podcasts appeared?
I do not understand why it did this automatically yesterday and now today, there is nothing showing.
Once I logged onto my laptop yesterday, everything just showed automatically. I've made sure I've logged into itunes today etc but nothing.
PLEASE can someone help. Many thanks.

Your media is only where you put it.
If  you want it on a second computer, put it there.
Installing iTunes does not cause content to magically appear.

    First the stupid questions...
Are you sure the variables have been deployed on the other computer?
Are you sure you have the right IP Address?
Could your IT department be blocking you?
Could Windows firewall be blocking you?

  • Unable to access local resources or RDP over VPN Connection

    Dear Tech People.

I am VPN'd into (192.168.1.252).  When I am connected, the IP address that I am assigned, is 192.168.1.150.  When I run ipconfig /all, I can see the "RAS < Dial In> Interface for VPN, and it is setup with an ip address of 192.168.1.151
